State Dual Champs and State Tournament Champs?

Topic ID: 10463 | 40 Posts

GOO or anyone else that can help with this question (information is hard to find).  How many times have the state duals champs won the State tournament in the same season?

I know the last two state duals champs (union in 12 and Campbell/Union in 13) were not sate tournament champs.  If my memory serves me well last year St. X the eventual state champs were beat by Simon Kenton, who finished 7th in the actual state tournament.

If my memory serves me right... Larue county has won state duals several times in the past, but does not have a single state title...again not trying to bash any programs just trying to prove a point.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some answers

82 views and no comments guess my point was made very clear...state duals is a good measure for the teams who are in the hunt for the state title, but they are not very good at telling us who will win it all!  I hope everyone stays healthy or gets healthy over the next couple weeks.

Good luck to everyone...let the post season begin!

Nice

I am still recovering from a long day of running both tournaments. Give me a few hours and I can answer that question.

Thanks Coach

I really would like to see how it plays out, so we as a wrestling community can get a better grasp of our debates!

I'd like to think Trinity could have accomplished the feat in 2009 and 2010, but both years were cancelled due to bad weather. We won in 2008 and were 2nd in 2011. Too bad we'll never know.

1991 - Campbell County

1993 - Woodford County

1995 - Sheldon Clark

1996 - Woodford County

1997 - Woodford County

1998 - St. Xavier

2002 - Woodford County

2003 - South Oldham

2004 - Campbell County

2005 - Woodford County

Maybe we will add Union or St. X this year, but chances and statistics say otherwise.

In my opinion…if Union wrestles like they did yesterday, we will be adding them to this list.

Where could one go to look up the state duals prior history/ results?

Sheldon Clark did it in 1994 not sure if we won duals in 95 or not.

I'm not at all surprised that it frequently is two different teams that come out on top. Such different beasts, duals vs tournaments. Larue has always been the master of strategy. Also team comraderie and momentum impact duals greatly. Obviously some teams are able to deal with adversity and runs better than others. It also doesn't hurt to have a kid like Boston or Brock or Sean or Austin in the lineup to be the ultimate stopper whenever a team wins a few in a row.

Yes they did. They beat the crap out of us (Simon Kenton) in the finals of State Duals.

It's a long way from Being history and I know one team in particular that will place a lot higher at the state tournament than they did at the state duals ,

Woodford will be the wildcard if all their best can do their best they could have four champs and other placers ,

CC could have four Champs as in 12 if their best do their best I think Turner just moved into the drivers seat at 170 . Love his momentum .

Did Domonic Lampe wrestle 170 just for the tourney ? Ray is a very strong 160 and they may keep him there and Lampe in the 170's wow didn't see that one coming. I figured one of the big 5 or 6 would drop to 170 from the 182's could still happen. I don't know those were just the results listed on track....

The first state duals were in 1990, Woodford won state duals CC won state tourney.   I believe CC won both in 91.

If St X stays with Ray at 160 Dominic at 170 that could give them 15-20 more points in the state tournament.   Ray is a threat to place top 6 at 160 and Lampe would still be the favorite at 170.   But I don't think they will.   It is fun to play with the numbers.    For any of top 170s it is to late to drop enough weight with the decent plan to get to 160 if Lampe moved to 170.   I do understand  coaches decide what weight class their wrestlers go not the kids.  I will say it again coaches make the call not the kids.

Yeah state duals is the last weekend to certify for a weightclass

Technically one could qualify for a weight class up until the region window opens, which is next Monday the 10th.  If I am wrong, this is the way it should be, the state duals should have no bearing (considering it is a non KHSAA sanctioned event) on the deadline for someone to certify for weight it should be the last day one could compete in a regular season tourney which is this Saturday (no wrastlin on Sunday in KY) the 8th.

Could coaches have certified some of their wrestlers at an out-of-state tournament to keep their intentions a secret?

Bible day???

What is "BIble Day"?

Could coaches have certified some of their wrestlers at an out-of-state tournament to keep their intentions a secret?

yes a team can have a wrestler make wt. at an out of state tourney.  However they still need to follow a decent plan.  If they weigh in too heavy at state duals they will not be able to make the wt. at regionals.

I was missing some years in my records but was able to get them. I have updated the list above.

1999 Woodford County lost in finals of state duals by a couple points (terrible officiating, the story has been told on this site before) and was without Josh Whitaker in the lineup.  Won state tournament by almost 50 points few weeks later with a healthy Whitaker.

That was a top 10 all time team in KY.

I think Union county will be added to the list soon

Well now the new numbers seem to show a 50/50 shot at winning both!  I know some State Duals have been cancelled due to snow, so it really might be half the time the Dual winner also wins State.  Good luck hope everyone is ready!

yes, but it has been 8 years since the last time this feat has been accomplished.

Seems that Union has both the aces and the depth for both, but anything can happen.  We have all seen teams surprise people.

Yes union looks to have it All finally.gonna look a whole lot different next year there with Brock and Blackwell gone , as for the tournament vs the duals it ain't over till its over union should sweep small school and maybe the whole shebang but the big school will have some twists Woodford looks to be the schocker this yr , Maybe it's Their yr .

I like how union and x wrestled , I think all the champs should play king of the Mat at the end of each state tournament to determine who is #1 1 champ for most wins and a champ for who goes undefeated .:)

No forfeits

Woodford just doesn't have the upper weights to pull off a shocker. Wyatt is a stud but they are real thin up top.  Need all their little guys to pin or major just to stay top 5, imo.

I think Henry Clay could sneak into top 5....and Lafayette top 8.  That's a good showing for 2 schools who a few years ago folks were saying had been passed up by Tates Creek.

Looking at all of the teams I feel like it will come down to Union and Saint X. The rest of the teams have no hammers.

I disagree. Campbell and woodford both have at least 2 hammers, but Woodfords upper weights might have to make major upsets.

You might want to look closer.  I think you could consider Boston, Fausz, and myers hammers.  Just a thought

Courtney and the lightweight kid 106 from Woodford are tough Boston and Austin are ranked pretty high nationally - higher than Brock and trae in some rankings ,

I think people are jumping the gun counting out CC for a crappy dual showing but we will see

I guess we'll have to wait and see where Brock and Fauz end up after regionals

I'm just saying after CC placed 7th in the duals I don't believe that they are any threat to X or Union, but stranger upsets have happened.

I would say:

Campbell has 9 possible placers (2 champs), Woodford has 6 possible placers (1 champ), Union has 8-10 possible placers (2 champs)

CC

106-Wells (top 4)

113-Krebs (ltop 6)

126-Spahr (did not wrestle at duals?...top 8)

132-Maggard (top 6)

138-Fausz (champ)

170-Turner (possible finalist)

182-Matthews (top 4..possible finalist)

220-Myers (champ)

285-Sinclair (top 6)

Where they are weak they are WEAK, that was very apparent at duals.  This line-up might be all that qualifies from the hammer that is region 6!

WC

106-Hurst (possible finalist)

113-Fallon (top 8)

120-Boston (Champ)

126-Carr (possible finalist)

145-Andrioni (top 4)

182-Courtney (top 4)

No one else really impressed, but solid and from a slightly weaker region so could get some points from other guys!

UC

106-S. Ervin (top 5)

113-Sheffer (possible finalist)

120-Dezember (possible finalist)

126-Blackwell (champ)

132-B. Ervin (champ)

138-Oxford (top 8)

145-Gahaffer (top 4)

285-Brown (did not wrestle at duals?...top 4)

Was impressed with their 182lb guy at state duals 3-2 with Smith from moore also with 170 not being as deep this year their Smith could place.  Same thing as woodford they come from a relatively weak region and could get some points from their other guys!

St. X

did not get to watch them this year and they bounced guys all over the place at the duals!

I think the state tournament is anyones to win and lose!!

St X  106 top8

113 binder top 4

120 beats top 8

126 miles close to top 8

132 haddad top 8(has potential to shock everyone except Brock of course)

145 smart close to top 8

152 champ 5 pins

160 champ 4 pins

hwt top 8

3 or 4 favorable draws they could be in the mix. X has a chance to qualify 14

Union should get at least 13

Fern Creek coming from region 3 could get all 14 in.   Most are right around top 10 or so in their classes.

Trinity has 9 potential placers 8 of them have at least a shot getting in the top 4.

Even after all that Union is still my pick to win it all.   If Union gets some favorable draws they could put up some serious points.

Tarzan someone else already did CC.   Spar could make a big dif.

It would be nice if was still in doubt when the big boys wrestle.
