This is a great opportunity to take Kentucky youth wrestling to the next level. I encourage everyone to strongly consider participating.

I was under the impression that this was at John Hardin? Also, are those weight classes right? I saw where they started at 45 and went up to 230 pounds.

John Hardin had a scheduling conflict. These are the weight classes for USA national duals, so they are the ones we will be using since that is the tourney the team will attend.

Campbell County has the lead in registrations at this time.

or the short link above.

If a kid signs up, but is a pound over, can he bump up to the next class and compete for that spot?

Yes but please make every attempt to register them in the correct class. Everything will run much smoother if we don't have a lot of last minute changes.

Weigh in with singlet on or underwear ?

Great question.  Weigh in will be in singlet at Heartland and this will be put out to the team once this tourney is over.  For this tournament since we did not clearly state I will allow either since Kentucky usually runs on underwear.

The difference for most sumblimated singlets is a 1 to 2 ounce difference so should not drastically effect.

Hope to see a great turnout this weekend at Taylor Co. Saw some very competitive weights this weekend and would imagine even more at this tournament.

Team KY is a great experience for the kids and parents and coaches to learn and improve and have a lot of fun.

Other than age, are there any other restrictions? Are middle school state placers eligible for Youth Team KY so long as they meet age eligibility, or will they be steered towards Middle School Team KY?

The only restrictions are age and grades 1-6.

As for MS vs Elementary that is your choice. Being a little biased and wanting to see the MS team compete as well as possible, I want the best kids available on that team, especially in Danville, IL. When both teams go to iowa going down to the youth team is an option if you have earned that spot this weekend.

Numbers are still low.  When will the determination be made to go forward or cancel?  I just cant justify driving 3 hours one way staying in a hotel for my boys to wrestle one other kid.

From what I hear, there are a lot of kids/teams planning to register that haven't yet. If you plan to attend, please register your kids. There is no reason to hold off until the last minute. That's what causes so many tournaments to get canceled. We want to see as many kids show up as possible in order to get this team off the ground.

If a kid makes the team, are there practices that are centralized, is the entry fee just for the one tournament?

There will be a couple practices. Centralized is a relative term.

The fee includes registration fee and team gear.

FYI, you do not have to pay when you pre-register. You will pay on site on Saturday. So don't let that prevent you from signing up. Also don't sit back and wait for so many kids to show up on the list before registering as well. That's how events die; everyone waiting for others to sign up.

If a kid weighs 80.4 or even 81 can he still try out for the 80 spot or will that bump him up to 85?

They will have to bump up. We need to know they can make weight in mid April, so it's important to make for the trials.

According to the email that went out to the coaches, there's one more day to register. Come on Kentucky! Let's give these kids an experience they'll remember for a lifetime.

How many have signed uo

Up

24 signed up so far.  I hope more take interest, if not I know myself and 3 others that will back out. not worth the drive or money to wrestle once, or to get down there and be told not enough participation so its not going to happen...

It's time to get registered. There is no reason to hold off. At least enter your kids. If you find there is too much competition at that weight class, just change classes. Track doesn't lock you in once you register.

Imo the location of this event has killed it before it had a chance to get off the ground. If this was in a central location we would see more parents involved. It should have either been in Lexington or Louisville. It doesn't have to be held in a gym. The only thing needed is a practice room with two mats down.

Central is a relative term, the geographical center of the state is actually located on the campus of Campbellsville University, so you can't really get more central than that. However, I understand your point in regards to population.

Well I would say most probably the kids that have signed up are pretty good is there kids signed up in each weight class if so can't we make a team out of that

There is only one weight class (160) with no one registered, but many weights have just 1 registered.

I know Jaydon could go 90 or 85 then if Tristan don't make MS team he could go 80 then we have Grandstaff twins and spencer and Cole and Tanner, Ian , Connor, Carter just a few off the top of my head. We gave plenty of talent in the state we could put a team together

You are only mentioning Northern KY talent. There are lots of other kids around the state. Let's wait a little longer and see what other kids register. When we wrestle out of state in track tournaments, we typically see the vast majority of registrations come through on the last day because people are waiting to see where others go before they register.

At this point, no Louisville kids or Hardin County kids have registered, and only a couple of those NKY kids have registered. You don't have to pay until the day of the tournament, and you can login and change weight classes. No reason to wait!

trust me I know that there is plenty of talent other places that's why I said that that was only the kids off the top of my head that's who I know. I also said there is plenty of talent in the state to put a team together. I wasn't trying to leave the other kids out I just don't know their names off hand except for my friends boys at trinity. I know they are good wrestlers.

How do you see who has signed uo

A couple things. First, the main purposes of this event are:

1) essentially have a wrestle off to determine the lineup

2) raise some money for team ky and help keep the cost down for the team

3) this will also be an opportunity to get many of the kids that will be competing as a team together

Second, I am amazed that there aren't more coaches and parents who would like to take advantage of competing against many of the kids registered.

I appreciate the efforts of everyone to organize, host, and put this together. Sounds like Taylor County folks have really stepped up. For that, I say thank you.

However, many kids play baseball, lacrosse or other springtime sports. Getting down there for the tournament is an all day affair. That may be why more Louisville kids aren't signing up.

Within 1 hour of Louisville and NKy are where 90% of Ky wrestlers live. Perhaps having the trials there in the future will attract more to enter.

Mad props to all those stepping up to represent the bluegrass.

whine, whine.  If you want to have the tournament where 90% of kentucky's best wrestlers are, just have it in union county.

other than that, campbellsville is central.  the issue is the lack of interest in youth team KY

I don't know about 90% of the best kids being in Union county. I'm quite sure there will be a handful of kids in Campbellsville this weekend ready and willing to prove that statement incorrect. :)

As for other sports, that is fine. Those kids won't be traveling with us anyway.

As for the location, you can't please everyone. I guarantee someone would whine no matter what burg or ville we held it in. The middle school national team requires travel on two weekends for "practice". We are essentially asking the same for this weekend but offering competition.

90% give me a break

I hope this happens

I really thought there would be more kids signed up for this by now.  So many kids compete in middle school but are young enough for this team and didn't place at Middle school State so I figured that would be a no-brainer.  I'm trying to help spread the word and tell more parents but I don't think our youth team gave out any information so I can only get the word out as best as I can.  My boy is in the 7th grade but meets the age so he is out of luck for this team but I'll keep trying to let parents know about this weekend and I will keep fingers crossed it gets more kids registered!

if it doesn't happen but I hope it does cause it would a great tournament I would still hope we could somehow put a team together.

It seems silly to me that the location of the trials tournament would be a barrier when it's to compete in Iowa.  On 2nd thought, maybe we could ask the Heartland Tournament directors to move the tournament to KY because it's closer for us.  JK

The team will come together either way. It would be best if it were determined in an open format (ie this event) so we don't have to hear about the northern ky mafia running and selecting everything. Glad to see some kids willing to travel and be part of a great thing (blue from Johnson and Briley Mohon from purchase area).

Speaking of purchase area, I didn't hear any of those guys complaining about traveling over 5 hrs to get to Lexington.

Is it possible with the low numbers to change it to just one session?  This would save some families some money if we held weigh-ins at 10:30 and just wrestled in the afternoon.  With 2 full mats we could still get through this very fast.

Chris - thanks for the feedback. We will definitely look at this possibility.

Purchase area people where some of the nicest people. I had 3 or 4 conversations with some of them. Just saying

Thanks!! I appreciate the sarcasm--I guess it's actually not sarcasm.

I'm just saying maybe the population centers are a better choice. The goal is to get the best team. I agree those who are committed will show whether it's in Ashland or Paducah. Why does this state have to be so spread out!

I'd think getting two or three per weight class would be good. I bet many wait to the last minute.

I'm trying as hard as I can to get the word out with our middle school and youth team. Maybe making it a one session event would help?

Meanwhile BGW is thinking about having two teams due to overwhelming interest.

95 will be a fun weight class to watch. As of right now you have 3 middle school SQ and a 4th boy that won his middle school district but couldn't make it out of the region.

I am looking to sign up Jack at 85, but as others have mentioned, there are other spring obligations where I am worried about conflicts. I know I can get him to Campbellsville this Saturday and to Iowa in April, but the practices may be tough. Have we any idea on when and where practices might be, and if they are required?

Ok, based on some discussion we have decided to consolidate the sessions and push back weigh ins to allow more time for travel in the morning. The revised schedule for the single session will be:

Weigh-ins: 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Wrestling: will start as soon as brackets are finalized, shortly after weigh-ins

Shortly after wrestling is complete we will have a short team meeting to share information on the team and schedule.

Great Call! Can you explain the process we are using for brackets with 6 or less wrestlers? Will it be a round robin to create the fairest oppertunity. Also on the 8 man brackets, will that be a blind draw? I don't want my son having to wrestle Spencer Moore 1st round unless it was the stars aligning! Creating a finals match right out of the gate!! :) this post obviously is directed at Ranger!

Ha ha. That thinking goes both ways.

Yes we will run round robins for the small groups and let the computer draw the larger brackets.

What time does registration close ?

What time does registration close ?

They should leave it open.  What can it hurt?  Let people walk up if it helps with numbers.

Great way of working things out for the best outcome to make the event possible.  Chris, you had a good idea I guess that happens every now and then (jk).  Gameface and Ranger123 those boys of yours would be a spotlight worthy match for sure!

Does the wrestler have to have a team coach present?  Currently my son is the only one from his team going.  I don't think we are going to have any of our coaches go.

A team coach does not have to be present.

thanks.  See you saturday

Anyone still wanting to register, send me info and we can get them in.  Union contacted me today and I think are going to add some wrestlers.  Will be a good event.

Come at 10:00 am to weigh in and we will roll early.

Every one will have at least 2 matches as it stands now.

Thanks to everyone who came out and wrestled today. We had a great event and saw some strong wrestling! I'm glad to see KY taking another step forward!

I second that. Really cool event and well organized! Would have liked to seen more participants, but other than that it was a good start to what hopefully becomes a major event for KY youth wrestling.

Thanks to Sara Frazier, Jory Whorton, Jason Moore and everyone else that had a hand in hosting this event. As mentioned, a little out of the way for us NKY folks, but we enjoyed the scenic country drive down!

Too many people to thank; I'm sure I will miss someone.

Much thanks to the folks at Taylor County for stepping up and hosting a great event today. Coach Elam, Coach Wright, and Sarah Frazier. Great job being flexible and making it all happen.

Thanks Coach Whorton officiating and technical help along with Coach Brown on trackwrestling.

Big thanks to all of the kids and parents who supported this event. Having big programs like Ryle and Union there and bringing their kids was big.

Numbers were not huge but I saw some great wrestling today. Miracle v. Deckard was a great match worth the price of admission.

I am excited to see these kids compete in Iowa. Not sure how many duals we will win but I guarantee we will have a lot of fun.

This sounds like an outstanding event, is there any way to know who makes the team and where they are from?  I would be interested to see who made it, as I have come to know many of the kids my son has wrestled over the years.

Its on track wrestling.  They are making 2 teams I'm sure there will be some changes all you have to do is look at the brackets.  The top 2 at each weight.

Great Job with using Track wrestling today! Jory, Jason and the whole staff of Taylor County did a great job running a fun and smooth tournament. Sure would like to see more support from our youth teams that have opinions of which direction to take this sport, show up to these events. I know we have a lot of talent that was not there today. We could build more than 2 solid teams to represent our Kentucky in Iowa and Tennessee. I know the boys that earned spots on these teams are excited about their oppertunity.

We have found a new job for gameface. The next tourney he might have stripes on. LOL

It's not too early to think about next year....

Any ideas on how to get better participation for this event next year?

Any opportunities for kid's that didn't make the team to work out/participate in any of the practices/clinics?

I hear you gameface. We have some tough kids on both teams and a bunch of talented kids around the state who didn't participate.

So team 1 is going to Heartland Duals in Iowa & team 2 is going to AAU Nationals Duals in Kingsport TN,

Is that corrrct ?

Both teams are going to Heartland. This greatly simplifies logistics and reduces cost (no aau cards). Plus it is much better for team building to get all these kids together in one spot. The middle school team will be there as well.

Cool!! Jack has friends on both teams & was upset when I told him the teams could b going to different venues!!

Is there any support in putting a team together for the Kingsport tournament. I think I read were it was 5th grade and under. Is that correct?

I think it is 5th and under. It also adds some odd weights considering the grades, like really big kids.

Is there a list compiled of the 2 wrestlers from each weight class?

I think it is 5th and under. It also adds some odd weights considering the grades, like really big kids.

I'd imagine with the extra weights it would be hard to get enough participation to make a 3rd team for Kingsport. But that's just a couple hours away for me so it is very enticing...lol.

I like the idea of taking both the Elementary and Miiddle school teams to the same venue. I think our 1st year having all these wrestlers together will build momentum towards next years Team Kentucky!!!

Both teams will be in great hands for the 1st annual Elementary Team Kentucky with outstanding coaches leading the way.

Coach Miracle taking team A.  There is a tremendous amount of wrestling knowledge from youth through collegiate wrestling.  His national and international experience will be great for all wrestlers to improve and gain expertise.

Coach Thomas will be leading team B.  He is part of one of the largest youth teams in Kentucky (Raider Wrestling) and has been involved in wrestling and coaching for many years.  He has traveled with his son and other wrestlers to many National Events and will be a great asset and leader to the wrestlers on his team.

Matt Lee will be involved in both teams as his son is on team A and his battle buddy is coaching team B, so he will also be a tremendous asset to each of these young wrestlers.

With these guys and the KSWA there will be great training opportunities lined up that would not have existed for these wrestlers without this step forward.  So it is awesome for those that took advantage.

I wish all wrestlers and coaches the best of luck and the experience will make all involved better wrestlers, coaches, and supportive parents when the next season rolls around.

Good luck Team KYUSA!

Battle Buddy !! That is good stuff & I think the name will Stick!!!

:-) :-)

We have found a new job for gameface. The next tourney he might have stripes on. LOL[/quote I felt more like John McCarthy officiating a Main Event in the octagon! and that match was a challenge match from a lighter weight class!!! Great job by the young wrestler who won, keeping his composure!

Battle Buddy !! That is good stuff & I think the name will Stick!!!

I LIKE IT!! Matt and I are like the Hitmen for the "NKYMAFIA"

There wasnt very many challenges was there? There was some very good matchs. My first time watching Miracle wrestle.  Very impressed with bothe of  the girls that wrestled. The challenging matchs was interesting.
