If they only wanted to roll up one mat it would've been nice if they had chosen one of the middle ones. It was nice to see the St. Catherine College mats there knowing they are starting a program there next year is welcome sight in KY. Any thoughts on why Brock didn't end the match when it looked as if he could've easily scored two towards the end, almost looked as if he waved it off then tried to pin the kid even though he would've already had the tech fall. Not having the beach balls and tp wasn't really that big of a deal, I would trade beach balls for a finals mat any day. Think everyone did a good job spreading the word and keeping it under control. Seemed like more people stayed longer this year. Consistency is a big issue on the calls being made, I thought the new rule was that if either wrestler has a supporting body part within the circle such as feet then they are considered inbounds. Being only one mat with no worries of flowing over into an adjoining mat and other kids, I felt there were several instances where two should've ben awarded but was not. If refs are worried about kids going off the mats then we should bring additional rolls to put along the edges since the mats were no where near each other but kids were still called out of bounds when they shouldn't have been. Any other observations? Comments? Just seemed kind of quiet on here considering we just had a pretty awesome tourney the other day. Congrats to all, and I personally would like to see Carr stay in KY and see if he can be the next five timer.

Big match for Carr big win over trae who is a great kid and wrestler good luck to him at the next level ,
Big win for Mathews over Smith to hit the finals smith having wins over courtney and Frankrone who had wins over Mathews , a nice opportunity for him and for the fans to see the most wide range of matches from a tough group at 182 ,
Congrats to Mattingly a two time runner up to a now HS undefeated three x devilishly handsome state Champ Camel , Brock Fausz ATM all repeat as expected Trae hits a bump in what is the long road of wrestling it happens now and again .
I looked at it this way with Brock, who absolutely chose not to get that takedown, even waved it off. He wanted to go out with style. That last takedown would've been off of the Danville kid tripping and wasn't an exciting takedown. I also think Brock did want the tech fall since it's considered the ultimate victory in certain circles. Wouldn't surprise me if he joked about getting a tech fall in the finals with his teammates earlier.
Good post. It's nice to hear of positive thoughts from you Tarzan. I saw you for the first time this weekend and heard some of your conversations. I now know that you are a very proud dad concerning your talented children as we all are if our own. I can't say that I didn't have preconceived notions about you in the past but with positive comments like this one you will gain more followers and well wishes for your children. Keep it up. ATM looked great. Congratulations.
My observation for the finals is for the facility to invest in a mat light for the finals. It would create a great feeling for the finals. I would think a facility that host such prestigious horse shows would already have lighting in place. Looked like a great tournament!
Not really sure how to reply , I can't say thanks since you obviously thought of and cast me in a stereotypical negative light , and I won't be mad since you somewhat complimented me lol !! I will say its nit nice to eavesdrop :)Of course I'm a proud dad , I like almost all the kids/ wrestlers I have ever met and try to help whomever I can an want my own kids todo the best they can and that means being the best ,
As for ATM hard for him to be his best he goes extra miles an has few who can push him to improve but it's all good . I'm sure if some bad call cost him everyone would have a lot more Bs to talk bad about me over but it won't happen as for this weekend I was very pleased with him and his team some fell short others stepped up and surprised I think it all evened out happy an sad to see some go I will miss watching kids like Turner Sinclair Fausz and Maggard from our team and kids like Brock and trae Courtney and Boston and smith and the rest and kida like Mattingly who may not have pushed ATM to his limit
But at least made him work for it a bit. .
Was in an awesome mood yesterday but with two kids in big tournaments in different parts of the country it's a bit stressful ,Stephen loses his first match at regionals possibly knocking him out of making nat , comes back gets a tech 3 pins and a win against the kid he lost to earlier , and is headed to nationals as true fresh with a little
More drama to boot think he represented well , big day for us , and to all the people who talked smack about me/ us lol CC first 3x champ and undefeated HS wrestler and his brother who is headed to nat on the #2 ranked NAIA team in the. Nation say . What have you done this week hahahaha
ATM copy's his brothers jr record of 4 pins and a tech with an 8 sec pin , although stephs was faster last yr he had 4 he didn't get but ATM had an 8 , a 9 , an 18 , a 33 and a tech half way through the match and a td he should have gotten called out , not complaining but well never mind stalling is stalling just because your wrestling a monster doesn't mean you can't call it but it's all good .
Ole Tarzan caught the thieves red handed lol little ten yr old thieves that's horrible and moms lying for em cops should gav threw em all in the pokey moms kids and all lol

That's the first thing my wife noticed as we were watching the finals on line....she immediately saw ATM was wearing just the plain purple singlet.
could you imagine if St X would have lost the state tournament by 28 points or less
Never been a big Union fan. My heart broke though for Trae last night. He didn't look himself in the finals match. Felt he wrestled not to lose. I hope it don't keep him down long. He has a very bright future. Just a horrible way to go out. Not taking anything away from Carr. He wrestled a perfect match.
Kudos to Tucker Hurst. Great kid, hard worker and tremendous heart. Really enjoyed watching him battle to win it all.
I predicted Mason Smith making the podium. Told people all year he would do better than 6th was my prediction. Great job. Keep working hard.
Aj Bindner. Keep your head up. It was just one of those tournys. Not your day. Definately could have won it on any given day. Get back to work. You'll see your day in the sun.

I like the plain jane purple singlets! Austin is a great kid. It has been a pleasure watching him the past 3 years.

Frankrone wrestled part-time varsity last year for X and was allowed to transfer to Trinity with out sitting out a year and score 29 points for Trinity while St X didn't score in that weight class. Never understood why he didn't have to sit
Tarzan, Your son was a beast, watched the finals , he probably would have made HWY look that easy, Parrot might go 3 periods but not win
I like parrot and from region 2 but I dont think a hs wrestler in this state could go all 3 rounds with atm

Not this year, anyway. The kid's just too damn good.
Trinity and X doesn't have attendance boundaries, you can live next door to X and go to Trinity, They are private schools so change of address doesn't apply
Its just easier to pin the big boys, probably a 10-12 point difference between ATM and Parrott
True. I forgot about the enrollment boundaries.

....in the first period.
Not going to bash a state champ but Austin has majored and pinned kids that Parrot could not last a match with this yr anyone at Franklin or Fairfield or Pickerington has seen it . He pinned a kid in under 35 seconds at Gmva that Parrot would not last a match with , Mattingly actually lasted the match last yr and avoided a pin while getting teched in a per and a half this yr .
Of course he's welcome to try and ATM can make 195 . Regardless congrats to him he's an athletic and talented wrestler and state champ .
Bluegrass games open mats whatever whoever it's always the same deal .
Enrollment to Trinity & St X has nothing to do with KHSAA rules. But, playing sports their rules apply to X & Trinity just like they apply to every school in Kentucky! Their are exceptions to the rules when you transfer and Trinity & St. X ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM KHSAA RULES!

Im sure Campbells FB coach would like to keep ATM up at 215 or even HWY as long as he still that quick
Cheers for Mr. Sells, 160 wt. class, of Christian County from this east ky fan, Down 13-11 to Lampe with about 15 seconds to go got illegally slammed on his head. I've seen many wrestlers in the past who would of taken an injury default win and some miracle would occur and they would be ready to go in the next round. Again, Cheers to Mr. Sells for deciding it on the mat.
He moved.....just like any other kid can do at any other public school in the state. No private school privileges. Very plain and simple. He movedFrankrone wrestled part-time varsity last year for X and was allowed to transfer to Trinity with out sitting out a year and score 29 points for Trinity while St X didn't score in that weight class. Under KHSAA rules Tyler should have been ineligible, I have lost many years and a def regional team championship because of these rules even when they first declared eligible and change their mind a week later because a state rep that also has ties to KHSAA enforcement said "Anyone that leaves a private school should have to sit out a year no matter what" then the KHSAA schedules an appeals hearing 3 days after regionals. Sorry If still have a few sour grapes over that one. Sad thing is that the kid did something stupid and was asked to leave. No offense Mr. Frankrone, your son is very talented, just tired of the ways the KHSAA plays with their rules. It would have been ironic if they lost by 28 points though
Yeah, especially Christian County because I remember a kid that laid down in the state semis from Christian a few years ago after he was losing a match and got to go to the finals
There is no playing the rules Ed. Moving is in the KHSAA rules to be an exception. Didn't Blackwell move a few years ago from Northern Ky to Union!

And the kid was a 160 lber
It's the offensive wrestler's responsibility to safely return his opponent to the mat. Otherwise wrestling would be part-MMA. We don't want that as it would cease to be a high school sport.
If an illegal slam happens and a kid fakes or his coach makes him fake an injury, I agree, that's bull. However, if the defensive wrestler is rendered less capable than he was before the slam, it's the offensive wrestler's fault and he should be held accountable.
I've always hated the rule. It puts the "blame" on the wrestler who was just dumped on his head. I've always felt that if the rule is for the safety of the wrestlers make it an automatic DQ. I've seen a few matches where a kid has been injured but continues the match and gets hurt worse AND loses the match he probably should have won.
He actually changed attendance zones, X and Trinity have no attendance zones, you can live in Indiana and go to those schools. Im sure you have neighbors that go to X. You found a way or your kid to change schools and be eligible, you did what any good parent would do that is best for your son. My beef is that the KHSAA changes their minds every year on enforcement of these rules and actually Blackwell left University Heights and arrived at Union the same year Jaycee Carr left Johnson Central and showed up. If I actually wrote the rules, I would give everyone 1 transfer after that I would add rules a little stronger than what we have now.
No question the rule is for safety , sad part is that their are coaches that have less morals. They should expand injury time on dangerous moves (moves that involve a DQ to 5 mins) A kid that just gets his breath knocked out might not be ready in 2 mins but would be in 5. I have just seen this bad scene happen to too many good kids. I know if you are going a err, err on the side of safety, but how do you explain to a kid the worked hard, hits a clean move and the kid turns or wiggles weird, or his hand slaps the mat, rolls around like he is dying and when the 2 mins are over he celebrates like he won the lottery. If a kid wins by injury DQ, shouldn't we be really careful and he not wrestle the rest of the day?

bigedcoach Said:Yeah, especially Christian County because I remember a kid that laid down in the state semis from Christian a few years ago after he was losing a match and got to go to the finals"
Name the Kid!!!! I've been involved with Christian County wrestling for 14 years it never happened. The only time anything even close to that happening was in the early 2000's. It was in the 152 quarters, the Waggoner kid dropped our kid on his head, knocking him out. He was taken to the hospital, treated and released. He wanted to continue wrestling the next day, but we made him forfeit out to 6th place. Who are you to disparage the name of a program you obviously know nothing about?
Mr. Frankone: Blackwell moved from University Heights Academy after 8th grade to Union County.

Ed,
If you have a problem with the KHSAA take it up with the KHSAA.No need to involve someone you don't know because your mad at Association.
You don't have any idea as to what your talking about concerning Tyler.
CC FB coach loves ATM lean and mean , was very happy when wrestling approached and he started dripping from just over 230 .
Frankone is a beast looks like a college wrestler already .
Steve Hollin illegal slammed a kid a couple Yrs back at state got DQed sent back to sixth and the kid won state ,
ATM wrestled him his fresh yr amidst a lot of stares smack talk and whispers of this kid will hurt you , he did throw a vicious elbow he got called for and ATM returned with a couple healthy but legal crossfaces that he did not , a good match good times , saw a couple healthy crossfaces at pickerington this yr too that got a lot of boos from the Ohio fans even some scribble g from coach B who missed the vicious headbutt to ATM s nose that we fans saw refs once again chose to say turnabout is fair play , sucks when calls are bad but I do notice some refs and I know it to be true try to make up for a possible bad call if they get the chance , no one is perfect and at least a ref or two can admitt it and try to even stuff up at times .
It would Stink to get Dqued for slamming a guy you were handling and then watch them win state .
I agree hats of to a kid for wrestling I stead of stealing a win from a slam .
- The matches were great as always. Loved watching Brock win his 5th, the Carr upset of Blackwell, ATM was incredible, not to mention the great matches in the earlier rounds.
- Why wasn't there more made of Brock being the first 5-timer, ATM winning his 3rd straight, Boston being #1 in the nation, All of the wrestlers who are going to be moving on to the next level? Isn't this the place we should be celebrating those who are the pride of our sport?
- The refereeing was inconsistent, One ref cautions for starting hand down -3-point stance another completely ignores it. Some call stalling right away, others wouldn't call it if their life depended on it.
- The finals introduction was terrible. What happened to the run in and music?
- Finally, ANYPLACE BUT THE HORSEPARK!!!!!!! It's dirty, has no scoreboard. overpriced food, multiple people- wrestlers, coaches, and fans with Sinus and breathing problems because of breathing in that dust and dirt. Before we left some of my FFA students asked where we were wrestling the state championships. When I said the Horsepark. the reaction was Why? it's an arena meant for horse competition not human beings. Anybody know the answer?
Yeah kids teams and all the bells and whistles should be celebrated , Brock at 5 is awesome , union although I wanted us to beat them and scoring WAS not done timely or correctly winning was big for wrestling the state and them it's actually good it goes around most kida on CC have rings Brock trae and those guys got some as well and on that note to answer a ? From a few weeks back
Yes CC us a DYNASTY champs in twelve dual champs and runners up in 13 and runners up in 14 , most teams would die for that record over a three yr span and it is the best in the state over the past three and there's more coming.
Carr seemed like a great kid and wrestler , I met trae a couple times liked him a lot felt bad for him same as for Courtney they feel like my friends a smile and a conversation a mutual love of the sport hate to see them lose but it's all a part of life everyone will lose only champs come
Back and learn from it .thought Turner got shafted a bit on some calls hated seeing him lose as well he could have won it all on anothe day .
Every single person in the room should have cbeered for Brock in the end , he is special one of a kind , same for Boston such mat awareness without having visual he automatically knows where his opponent is at all times reaches anywhere and does his moves remarkable Bricks balance and flow is the same , Austin's power that everyone notices and speed are Dominant few of his other attributes are even seen no one has reversed him or finished a td on him at state or in state !! He improved a bit this yr physically and seemed to not lose any if the skills he acquired as a youth wrestler in the great rooms and camps he attended and CC has practices and a room equal to the best in our area including Cincy ,
I'm sure he wants to represent as Brock Boston , Stephen Cooper and everyone else has , he has a shot to set himself apart and I hope to keep him on track .
very proud of Sinclair for training with us the last few months Grazziani Austin and Sinclair worked hard I the gym training having fun an drilling a few hrs a night after practice very honored to hang out with them and like I said Sinclair did schock and I like Raynel
but we were shooting for him lol
Congrats NICK on your runner up at HVY ,
We are going to have some fun till next season ATM and Grazziani are gym rats it will not be comfortable wrestling them ,
And to the announcers on ihigh at state great job but you left out Austin's whole fresh record ! He wasn't 109 at state 139 -0 all good ,
Good luck at Iowa st Boston ,looking forward to seeing u soon
Naplesme I was kinda thinking that about Trae after I posted that. I couldn't remember.

Richard, My observation was the irony of X losing 29 team points because a kid transferred for what ever reason. I definitely don't have problems with the Frankrones and the KHSAA has heard plenty from me. I even wrote a graduate essay about athletic policy and used information from the KHSAA that is found online. If the kid went from one school to another to improve his life then the parent did the right thing, but lie a have always said the KHSAA is a weird animal. I just can't see how he got declared eligible but for him Im glad it happened
Mr. Frankone:
No problem, not disparaging, just informing.
boy would any wrestler love to have the genetics of the Carr's
Naplesme- I do know the Christian Co program and my brother was the coach of Waggener for that match and I was sitting front row because I knew the Murray's, so knowledge if what happened was right there, and I have seen Christian Co for 25 years in wrestling both as a wrestler and coach so.
I appreciate it. If I'm wrong, I wanna be corrected.

It is in the bylaws of the khsaa that when a student moves, it's the one exception to the rule to stay eligible and to not have to sit out a year in sports.
We moved in June of last year.

106- Hurst has some serious heart. He was fun to watch. Tough as nails.
113- Sheffer is so smooth with his wrestling, love to see him scramble and mix it up.
120- Boston is amazing to watch. Great move to move transitions and basically just makes kids quit.
126- Carr is a darn good wrestler. I enjoyed watching such great young talent. Biggest upset of the tournament.
132- Ervin is great to watch. First 5x state champ in KY. Amazing.
138- Fausz is a stud. He's a beast on top and is very technical.
145- Whalen, similar to Hurst is tough as crap. Always ready to rumble.
152- Lampe is such a hard worker. Like seeing him grind it out.
160- Lampe is just a huge 160lber I think. He is tall and strong. Dude is a warrior. Head taped up and everything.
Didn't get to see much of the 170 match but heard it was a good one.
182- Frankrone is a stud. So explosive and strong.
195- Parrot is athletic. Big dude and still technical and fast.
220- Meyers is huge. Definitely hit the weights hard in this past off season. Wrestles like a lightweight with the great takedowns.
Hwt- Johnson is tough. Good big man on his feet. And on top.

Really, I was coaching mat side, so you still got it wrong. You're questioning mine and my coaching staffs integrity. If you're going to do so, know what you're talking about. Our kid moved into the semi's, not to the finals. Peace from Ryle got the forfeit to the finals because as I said before we would not let our wrestler continue to wrestle. Know what you speak of, before questioning the integrity of someone you know nothing about.
For the second time at state I saw a kid go to shake a coaches hand and the coach ran off and did not shake his hand a but different than the JC coaches not shaking sams hand but still tacky. A Scott coach runs off to coach another match and leaves a kid hanging , IF a wrestler is expected and should shake hands after a match a coach should as well and if they are the only coach get an assistant to show the respect you lack .

Isn't Scott the school with one coach?
Like I said if your the only coach get an assistant ,or a wrestler , its rude unsportsmanlike and just an excuse to get away with being an @$$ .
Your son did an amazing job. Making it to the finals is a tough task. I have a feeling he will be back. Thanks for all your support.
Wasn't there a state champ a few years back from Ballard that transferred in the off season to Trinity or X (can't remember which one it was) that was deemed intelligible and had to forfeit his senior year of eligibility? Not questioning Tyler eligibility at all. Just curious what makes one transfer ok and another one not ok.
why not a union fan? A small school from a rural county, it is really impressive what they do as a team. Only 5 stop lights in the whole county, these large schools who have numbers should dominate a team like that yet year after year union is in the running.Never been a big Union fan. My heart broke though for Trae last night. He didn't look himself in the finals match. Felt he wrestled not to lose. I hope it don't keep him down long. He has a very bright future. Tyler's a beast won a beast class , amazing match with Courtney and a great finals along with a great yr , he's a class act as is his family .
Nuff said .
I agree union is very good and I have never been there , but the tiny country bumpkin story don't pan out with me or anyone else they are a top team who compete everywhere with a great staff and fan base , get of the we are just a little ole country school kick . There are nationaly ranked teams from little ole towns ever heard of st Paris graham !!
And despite my sons school I am a big union fan . Congrats to them their team and coaches .
Like I said if your the only coach get an assistant ,or a wrestler , its rude unsportsmanlike and just an excuse to get away with being an @$$ .
I feel that Coach Graven was not in any way being an a$$. He simply didn't want to hold up another match for any longer than necessary. The match he ran away from, was my younger son's match. My son said the other wrestler was saying he was going to get sick and so not knowing how long it would take for him to get up, he had to make a decision, he did check on the wrestler who was down and then ran to the other mat to coach the other waiting wrestler. The wrestling program at Scott is not loaded with coaches. There is not a team or staff of coaches. There is one head coach who works really hard with the guys and one asst who works part time and was not able to be present. I know there is a lot of rude, unsportsmanslike conduct, but that was not the intention of Coach Graven.
U
Well when you see an upset kid walk to a coaches corner and see the opposing coach running off its rude and a bit embarrassing for a kid , for such a decent school with so many parent fans they cannit get a coach or assistant or wrestler or parent to help out and at least shake hands , hard to believe ,either way nit the way its done !!
Appreciate you very much Tarzan.

Yeah its hard because I'm still mad about trinity beating us at duals but I'm getting over it
Congrats
Nice talking to Mr Bryant as well his son was a monster still think he and Austin would have had an epic Monster match , glad they both got titles last yr .
Iwin I believe Troy Wismer who place 3rd or 4th at state his jr year left trinity and was declared ineligible the next year. that's been a while though, like 2003 or 2004
Iwin I believe Troy Wismer who place 3rd or 4th at state his jr year left trinity and was declared ineligible the next year. that's been a while though, like 2003 or 2004
Wismer placed 4th for THS(2003) and then transferred to Oldham Co. for his senior year. He did not change his residence and was declared ineligible.

Not questioning Tyler eligibility at all. Just curious what makes one transfer ok and another one not ok.
Jordan Lewis was a State champ for Ballard in 2003,3rd in 2004,then transferred to THS in 2005.
Ballard had lost their coach due to illness and from what I understand they were not going to have a team in 2004-5. Jordan began the year training with the THS team and sometime around late October
(If I remember correctly)Ballard hired a new coach and subsequently Jordan was ruled ineligible after multiple appeals. It doesn't always work out for the kids.
Thanks for clarifying Coach Brown. I remembered that the circumstance was a difficult one, but could not remember the details. Jordan seemed like a good kid too. It's ashame it didn't workout for him.
You know if you move from one side of Middletown to Westport Road and your still in Eastern's District , you can't transfer to Ballard. Frankrone never left Trinity's attendance zone because they don't have one. If all you have to do is just change addresses to change private schools that's crazy , advantage privates. This school year 3 athletes changed private schools x to trinity and trinity to x and were declared eligible even though they played varsity but 80 % of athletes that left a private school to a public school had to sit a year even with change of address because no where you move you can still attend private school. Problem is ever since a certain state lawmaker that was a catholic alumni wit the initials TS spoke and said what ever the KHSAA does we can just change the laws or disband the KHSAA . the privates have had the advantage , notice we didn't get the split
I am going go off Naplesme-
1. I am not going to be too critical over officiating and I did say this to one of the Shaw's. The biggest problem we have right now is not consistency across the board. This is not a state tournament issue this is in general. I have NO PROBLEM with officials, I did a couple middle school duals and I know I missed a couple calls. I held myself accountable for it, but we need more mentorship of younger officials by veterans. I come from TN where the older officials will give tips to younger officials. I rarely see this happening at tournaments. If I am wrong I will eat crow on it.
2. Congrats to Union Co. for winning the state championship. It has been an amazing time to see Brock win his 5th title. Congrats to him and his family. ATM, Carr, Boston, Fauez, Frankrone were fun to watch. Congrats to Dixie Heights 285. That kid had a TOUGH road to the finals. Congrats!
3. Horse palace needs to go. Before I slam the venue, I do like the spacing and how they opened up the stairway near the warmup area. But something needs to change. If Horse palace is where state will be held then we need to have a tarp go over the floor after they put the divited floor covering down. Why is bringing a cooler in for WRESTLERS such a huge issue?? If the team brings in the cooler for a team such a problem??? I know a couple coaches and I had issues with this because some parents could not send their kid with 100 dollars to eat over priced food.
4. The finals change. I thought at first this was a very dumb idea, but after a while I really liked the idea. As much as KHSAA created such a fire storm I really like the one mat near the medal stand. I liked it. I wish we could do the spot light again like the dungeon and still keep the 1 strip of lights on.
5. Medal rounds. This was a GREAT idea by KHSAA. The down time with the KYWCA awards is a great idea. I know KHSAA is slammed so much, but they did get this right.
6. Track wrestling/WIFI connection. I am a fan of using track wrestling for state for the team score and brackets updating quickly. I think Horse palace might want to think about using the WIFI connection for everyone. Not everyone has an iPhone or Android phone to look up brackets. My iPad was connected to my phone, but I know some other coaches I spoke with did not have the same as I did.
Congratulations to EVERYONE this season. A GREAT state tournament.
My observation from state is very neutral i no longer have a son wrestling but i love the sport. The intro to the finals very sad, this is wrestling not chess these boys look forward to the hype of running in and the music. the mat being moved out of the center had nothing to do with the youth tournament they used all new mats. There was also a spot light used for the youth it's not a traditional spot light but they could have used it. The dirt in that arena was horrible i have attended all three years and this by far was the worst. I think the overall feel of the tournament was a bit disappointing a lot of the enthusiasm was taken away. I understand no one wants to get hurt i also don't think that a few bad apples should spoil it for EVERONE else. The last observation is the sad excuse medals that were given out. It started with regionals when the wrestlers were given a plastic Baggie with the medal in it. I don't think the medals need to be some big huge medallion but you have boys that have worked their tails off all season and give them a medal the size of a half dollar. I love the sport of wrestling and i really hope that the khsaa listens to the parents and coaches and not do what they want to do just because they can.
Let me clear this up. All this crying about private schools having kids bounce back and forth because of no zones or boundaries is crazy. Tyler was in public schools before high school. I was approached by 3 different coaches from public high schools in Jefferson county letting me know that they wanted Tyler and it didn't matter where we lived! Nobody from St. X OR TRINITY approached me Tyler's 8th grade year to inquire about where he'll go to high school. I contacted them! So tell that fairy tale public school myth somewhere else! Because it happens in public schools! Period!

With that big scoreboard, it would be nice if the score could be kept on the big screen. The finals match was obscured for many people in our section due to the score clock being in the way.
I really miss the celebration that took place prior to the finals. You can have both safety and celebration.
The medals absolutely are ridiculous. With the ridiculous prices, can't the state buy a decent medal for the kids? I know the KHSAA surely has more money than the Middle School organization, but there medals are second to none.
The tickets are $25 and a t-shirt is $20. After food and drinks, costs are easily $60-$80 per person to go to the State. Families cannot afford to go watch, and accordingly, the attendance at the event is not very good. I know the attendance was about 4,500, but most of that was wrestlers. There needs to be a way for ticket prices to cost $10 a day.
The reason the medals are so small is because of Title IX. Everything has to be the same for every sports I that's why the small medals. Could it be possible to get businesses to sponsor the awards that way we could blow up the size if the medals?
The Title IX excuse is BS, All that means is the KHSAA is cheap to all champions regardless of gender.
Wow!!!
What a great tournament from top to bottom. We had great matches starting from the first round all the way through the finals.
The skill level has never been higher from the bottom up!
I'm left with the impression that besides the technical aspect improving the scrambling abilities across the board are just phenomenal.
It's incredible to see the 220's scrambling and moving like lighter weights... well except for ATM's opponents.... Just kidding.
Congrats to all the coaches and wrestlers, great job this year!!!!!
I don't get why the refs and doctors are SOO strict about skin for the last tournament of the year and the biggest. Ruined a lot of careers... Andreoni got DQed and had a legit chance to win it beating Whalen. Jude is a senior and had a doctors note and still got thrown out and also had a chance to place. And Forrest Vaughn from bourbon is also a senior and had a chance to place... Numerous other kids as well, vomit remember all
Heard about Andrioni , that is terrible should not happen to any wrestler , that's BS

Would you rather have your high school wrestling career "ruined" or have herpes the rest of your life?
Would you rather have your high school wrestling career "ruined" or have a limb removed/surgery because you contracted MRSA?
There is a reason that there is an onsite Dr. at the state tournament and should be at each event throughout the year. For all anyone knows these "Dr's Notes" in some instances (not all) are forged.
If it's herpes then yeah obviously but a little mark that you have a note for... That's bull

Okay, while most of you are opting for a more diplomatic expression of opinions concerning referees, the venue, the KHSAA, and so on, I am going to be genuine even if it's crass.
The referees in Kentucky are mediocre at best. Period. We have had this discussion for eons, and to this day, the only thing that is consistent about the officiating at the state tournament is that the referees are inevitably out of position for VERY IMPORTANT calls. I mean, look at the final seconds of the second period in the Carr/Blackwell final. 6-4 Carr on the scoreboard and Trae catches David on his back with four or five seconds left for the easiest two-count in the history of wrestling, yet zero points were awarded. The score should have been 6-6 to start the third, and if anyone disagrees then you weren't watching the match. That is just one example of the monumental mistakes these referees make. We should expect the same level of excellence from the officials as we do from our wrestlers. I'm on board for having refs from Ohio or Indiana brought in for state. I'm done humoring excuses for Kentucky referees.
I like the Alltech Arena in some regards, but it's not accomplishing what we want. I miss the dungeon in Frankfort. Yes, Alltech holds more people, but it isn't selling out and the acoustics are bad. There is a big difference as a wrestler in hearing crickets chirping because no one is there, and feeling the thunderous roar of a sold out crowd in your feet as you step on the mat. I had the opportunity to watch a live stream of the Indiana state finals while our finals were underway. Indiana gets it! They absolutely do it right. Each wrestler is spotlighted and recognized for his accomplishments for his season and career(i.e being a 5 time state champion, being nationally ranked, being a national champ or an Ironman finalist-yeah nicely done Kentucky, good job recognizing the greatest core of talent this state has ever witnessed on the mat... JOKE), the Indiana Pacers arena is standing room only with huge roars and chants from the seats, loud booming music, and so on. It's a spectacle boarding on theatrical, but those kids, no, those young men deserve all of that attention. We need a better stage for the state tournament.
And now for the KHSAA. I won't comment on whether or not these people have any experience with wrestling because, well, I don't know any of them. But I will say that if any of them do have experience with wrestling, then shame on them for attempting to overhaul a tournament schedule that has been working for years. And if they don't know a thing about our sport, then they shouldn't impose their misguided judgement on a system that has been seamlessly executed since the Stone Age. And if the KHSAA is considering adjustments, then they should consult individuals who understand our sport and could give useful feedback before they just start wrecking our weekend.
I love Kentucky wrestling and am proud to see how far we've come, but these competitors deserve better, the fans deserve better and until we make a concerted effort to enhance the product offered to those two groups, we will be a class below Indiana and Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The edges of the arena should have been covered so the dirt could not be seen , hate seeing the refs get bashed because most I have met I like and all are not bad , smiley don't know his name but he alwaya laughing an smiling duiring the matches and its disrespectf if you cant take it seriously then get ,and you cabt call a pin or a two count to begin with glad you didn't ref my kids match hate to see an 8 sec pin go to the third he has to go , kick rocks , don't let the door hit ya , and I know a lot of this talk is over the same
Refs , as I said I like a bunch of them and most are good at what they do , not bashing a guy having fun doing his job but it goes beyond that , you k ow people are tucked about calls and u freking laugh and smile at them when this is a part of their lives work , not cool - and I understand refs backing each other as well , you would have to for the most part
I OBSERVED , AUSTIN TYLER MYERS "ATM" BECOME HIS SCHOOLS FIRST EVER THREE TIME STATE CHAMP
My observations:
What the heck happened to wrestling in Oldham County? South seems to have fallen completely off the map. North may be going through a lull because they've got some competitors coming up and OC was supposed to have fielded their best chance in years qualifying all 14. Has a team ever entered a full team and not finished in the top 10?
Christian County has some talent. Nice to see some schools other than Union out of Region 1. Will HopTown ever make it back?
I sat close to the Cooper fans and let me say that although they may be kicked around NKY, they are proud supporters of Region 6.
Watch out for Trinity, Fern Creek, and Ryle next year.
Parrots last three matches were 5-3 ,5-3 ,5-1 , Austin had better scores in his last three state finals matches at 220 . Congrats to a great state champ in Parott and an impressive undefeated season , he beat our reg 195 lb champ by 2 , he would not make it to the third period with Austin even with a massive dose of Gamma rays , I doubt he would make it out of the first .Trinity and X doesn't have attendance boundaries, you can live next door to X and go to Trinity, They are private schools so change of address doesn't apply
Its just easier to pin the big boys, probably a 10-12 point difference between ATM and Parrott
Easier to pin the big boys - maybe ,easier to do it off the whistle over and over when they know it's comIng - not so easy at all
Hey Miller has been wrestling the last month with a torn meniscus.. Nobody new that but he could not bend his knee past 90 degrees... He also had a nice 5 point throw against Parrot which smiley called out! Parrot is very good at stalling as well. Not giving excuses, he lost, but one heck of a tourney for him considering the circumstances. He will have surgery in next week or so and will hopefully have a quick recovery for nationals. I really do believe the outcome would have been different if he was able to have his quick shot and full move ability during the tourney
Yes Austin told me Miller hit a nice throw he thought was Good that was called out .I did see the finals match Parrot is quick and athletic as well as a sound wrestler , no knock on him at all
But he wouldn't last a match Trevor had wins over Miller early and didn't last a minute and Mueller had wins over him and it was pretty much the same , Mueller had a bad tournament he did well
Every where I saw him except state he just had a couple bad matches .
Congrats to Meiman he proved his style could get it done at 170 . Good chance we see him and Mathews battling it out next yr .
bigedcoach Said:Yeah, especially Christian County because I remember a kid that laid down in the state semis from Christian a few years ago after he was losing a match and got to go to the finals"
This is 100% correct! I know because I was the head official for that Quarter final match. This match scared me more than any other, because I thought the kid had broke his neck. The Waggoner kid who was undefeated, didn't mean to drop him on his head, but it was illegal and the correct call. The Christian county kid did not wrestle another match at that tournament. I've never been booed more in my life... lol
One thing I observed was Region Ones representative not attending State nor the awards ceremony at State. Not sure how one can have input for a region on an event or sport when the wrestling committee meets if you don’t bother to attend the Region or State events.
there is a wrestling committee of wrestling coaches that meets and advises Mr TAckett and Mr BArren
I belive the waggoner wrestler was mike murray.. he was a tank for 152 lbs
The Region 1 rep is not a wrestling coach. He was at the Region 1 Tournament. I spoke with him for a few minutes, but it was embarrassing for our region to not have someone to represent us at the state tournament, especially with the number of Region 1 placers and a Region 1 team- Union winning the whole thing. If you are going to represent your region then do so at all events, but especially at the most important one. js

I agree that if you look at the whole county, Oldham County wrestling may not seem as strong as in the past. However, Oldham County High School was the State Duals runner up this year. That's pretty good, right? Seems like they are more of a dual team than tournment team at this time. I think at State they only qualified 12 (not all 14), and then Emerson was injured and couldn't continue, so he could have scored more points for the team. So, that may be why they didn't end in the top 10. Also, I've heard the team was really young. Only 2 seniors will graduate. Next year, I think the team will have two seniors and a whole bunch of very talented and now more experienced juniors/sophomores. I wouldn't count them out just yet.
Also, Oldham County has pretty good feeder programs run by experienced coaches at the elementary and middle school levels. If anything, I think it's just a building year for all the teams. But, only time will tell if they reach their potentials.
Oldham also won region. Beat Woodford by 36 points. I think they just didn't have a state tournament, it happens. They we will tough for years to come.
By far the biggest let down of the tournement to me was the lack of celebration. I mean this is the state finals we are talking about, lets crank the music make the intro of each wrestler in the finals more exciting and intense bring out the spotlight. That's the least they can do for these young men that have worked their whole life to get to this point and the wore out back hurting empty wallet parents sitting in the crowd deserve a little excitement too!!
I don't know I loved the match music !!
ctown714...I posted this in another thread, but I think it goes to exactly what you are saying...
On Saturday, wrestle all the way back, completing the Consolation Finals, and then take a break before the Championship Finals. (It doesn't have to be too long, but let's recognize these kids for their accomplishments and make it special!)
During the break, elevate the Championship Mat, like the NCAAs, on risers under a center spotlight in the middle of the arena. Before the finals, turn off the lights, other than the center mat spotlight, and allow the place-winners, in uniform, to walk around the arena floor and then line up around the Championship Mat, but not on the elevated mat. (Third placers would be led out, then Fourth placers, etc.) Then, have the finalists walk out in two single file lines and line up on the raised mat for a face-off under the lights. We could then have the someone sing My Old Kentucky Home and then the National Anthem. When the wrestlers are introduced, put their pictures (Or live images) on the large team score screen as the announcer reads off their accomplishments for the year/career. (With some time limitations, of course.) Then the boys walk across, shake hands, and the lighter weights could leave to warm up. Put the actual, live, matches on the big screen as well... Award medals between championship matches and keep the thing moving.
Horse park is for horses not wrestlers. Being that far off the mat takes the crowd out of it. Not rolling up all but one Mat was senseless. Not celebrating or having the finalist run out was disappointing. Referees where inconsistent. If it's stalling in the first period than it's stalling in the 3rd. I've never seen 2 locking hands points get awarded on the first violation and let the kids wrestle a minute after the first initial locking hands call before the ref blew the whistle. Food and drinks broke me, got to work a little overtime this week
Should've let all the old timers on the floor with Coach Ploesser to take some pics. We would've carried him off the floor. Shot out to Jerod Trice, Livingston Merritt, hank Pinner, and all the other alumni that showed up. Especially to coach Harris for calling all us to make sure we showed up
Should have took a pic of all the champs and everyone should have took a pic with Brock ,
I will miss seeing him a couple times a yr , still think he's better than Valencia , Big Blackwell fan as well , no doubt I will miss Turner from CC a great two sport athlete toughest kid in the tournament - double miniscus surgery mid season and still has a nice state run , and Fausz is irreplaceable in a couple yrs young Wells may be there .
I sat for 2 days wondering what the Campbell Co. coach had stuck to his tie.....just saw on the photos it was weights and bout numbers...love it!!! Very disappointed with the atmosphere, my 4 year old even asked when the party would start. The finals mat should be in the center or at least move the score cubes and put the score on the big screen...we did the bob and weave during most of the finals matches. So very proud of all the Kentucky wrestlers, they were asked not to party and didn't.....even though they deserved too. If you don't live, breath, & eat this sport you don't understand the time these boys put into it....I'm beginning to think the decision makers have no grasp on the sport at all.
I don't think they do and I do not think most of the press do either minus Claywell ,
WE NEED BRACKETS!!!!
WE NEED BRACKETS!!!
Anyone who can't afford the food prices I know a great way to get that money.
Print some brackets out and stand outside the entrance and sell them. Heck just bring 25 brackets sell them $2 a peice. You probablly make a $40-$45 profit. That pays for your entry into the tourney and a couple of hot dogs.
Maybe it could be a fund raiser for a team or two.
At the very least allow for some wi-fi access. It's kind of difficult to figure out who is wrestling when you don't have a bracket in front of you. They didn't even give the coaches one at the beginning of the tournament.
What is going on here? Why no Brackets????????
Heck I know a few people who would probably have paid 5-10 dollars for a bracket. Especially on the second day.
They didn't even have updated brackets posted anywhere in the building.
they were on track wrestling which I think is betterWE NEED BRACKETS!!!!

But if you don't have wifi, it is hard to keep up with track wrestling. I contacted the horsepark regarding guest wifi, I was told it would be $50 per day for access......no thanks
lol the wifi was a joke. and trying to access track using 4G was slow as molasses. PRINT BRACKETS AND SELL THEM. UPDATED ONES ON DAY TWO. So easy.
they were on track wrestling which I think is better
Yes but is you have a dumb phone like myself then you can't access trackwrestling.
I tried to use my wifes phone, but then it is to small for my old eyes to read and keep up with.
If you are only trying to keep up with one wrestler then it may be ok. But try to keep up with numberous wrestlers on numerous teams its close to imposible unless you have them printed in front of you.
Why do you think it is better? What advantages are there to it being on track wresting with no hard copy of brackets available?
How about this...
We could find sponsors for a magazine-type program to be sold at the door. Inside, near the front, include an image of the preceding year's State Dual and State Tournament Championship teams with a brief write-up on each.
On the individual bracket pages, include a picture of the previous years champion, from the podium, along with astricks beside the names of the returning state place winners who are in the bracket for that year. On that same page, provide a legend showing who did what in previous years. ("*" for the first returner, "**" for the second, etc.) Scatter the sponsor advertisements throughout and in the back offer a list of the previous team champions and individual champions for the last ten years.
So spectators can keep their brackets updated, post large (12x18) brackets per weight class on poster board at four different locations throughout the arena and have workers update them periodically each round. That way we can have our own brackets and keep them updated.
That is what use to be in the tournament program.
I liked the pictures of the last years state champions.

Let's get it going again...people love to keep them as souvenirs... My parents still have them from decades ago!
They didn't have these printed our for sale?

Could it be possible to get businesses to sponsor awards for weight classes? Like Toyota presents the awards for the 285 weight class.

I have a program from every year since 1982
For real I saw that on the khsaa website and didn't see them at the tournament ??? Only those overpriced t shirt booths that I had to take a loan out for lol - that program is cool , I must have missed them at the tournament .They didn't have these printed our for sale?

I didn't see any, but I could have missed them. Now, the only thing to do is post those larger brackets around the arena so the spectators can keep their brackets updated.
Track wrestling and a I phone has eliminated that need and I bet you would get them taken away if you tried to sell them
Definitely not eliminated. My service in the building was useless. Maybe it is sprint, but I heard a lot of the same.
Still don't see how it has eliminated the need.
How hard is it to post those brackets on the wall and update them at least once during friday. At the beginning of Saturday and before the finals?
You can't tell me that they were not making money off the brackets.
They may ask you to stop selling them however once the word was out you could just sit in your seat and people would find you. I know I heard at least 100 times people looking for brackets.
Technology is moving faster than people can keep up. Not everyone and my guess not even most people have/had access to trackwrestling at the tournament.
Next year anyone who wants to sell a bracket tell me I will buy one from you, I'll even buy a second one on Saturday if you update it.
I know some like to use the internet, but others like to have an actual bracket in hand...it's really not that hard to produce them. And wireless reception can always be an issue.
If we're concerned the printed brackets will be taken away, can't the KHSAA print and sell the brackets with money-making as the bait? And I saw plenty of orange colored shirts on middle schoolers who could be used to keep those brackets updated. Some could be bout sheet runners, but let others be bracket updaters.
How about letting some ms or youth kids sell them as a fundraiser.
I think the arena has both positive and negative aspects. I like the space and the arena itself is nice but its dirty. I don't understand why they don't sell brackets nor did I understand why they wouldn't let teams warm up on the mats before the tournament started.
The wrestling in KY is getting better but the reffing needs to improve in order to keep up with the scrambles and better technique. The refs are very inconsistent on stalling and takedown calls and it has an impact on close matches.
I saw some great wrestling and very exciting matches in each round including many overtime and 1 point matches.
The finals were disappointing in my eyes. Too many of the finals were not close matches and dominated by one wrestler. The close matches were exciting but didn't demonstrate great technique or skills, just two evenly matched wrestlers going at it. Overall great weekend of wrestling. Congrats to all that stood on the podium.
The finals are like that a lot because of the random draw. The best two may have had each other in the quarters!
I would definitely sell/update brackets for the high school tournament as a fund raiser for our club. How does one go about getting permission to do such a thing??
The finals are like that a lot because of the random draw. The best two may have had each other in the quarters!
lets take an honest look at this quote.
in 8 cases the 3rd place finisher lost to the state champion at the state tourney. 113,132,138,145,160,182,195and HWT
at 113 Schaffer defeated Vega 11-1 and won in the finals 13-3 Same margin of victory
at 132 Erivn defeated Heidorf by a TF and in the finals also won by a TF
at HWT Johnson defeated Lawson by pin in ;43 and in finals won by pin in :56
in these cases the finals were the same as defeating the 3rd place finisher.
at 138 Fausz defeated Barton 19-7 and won in the finals 17-6
at 145 Whalen defeated Hahafer 8-4 and won in the finals 3-1
in these cases the finals were closer than defeating the 3rd place fiisher
in only 3 cases did the champion defeat the runner up by a greater margin than the 3rd place finisher.
160 Lampe had a barn burner with Rusch and won in overtime 4-2 while defeating Cornett in the finals 10-4
182 Frankrone had a close one with Courtney while defeating Mathews 12-1
195 Parrott defated Stevens 5-3 and defeated Morrow 5-1 (not much of a difference)
My conclution is that the random draw did not make much of a difference this year only in maybe 2 wt. classes 160 and 182
I would also add that 182 was one of the tightest wt classes to call therefore maybe only one class would have been changed if not randomly drawn.
At 182 if it would have been seeded smith had wins over Frankrone and Courtney and Frankrone and Courtney over Mathews who beat Smith , sometimes it's not scores but matchups .
smith would not have been seeded because he was not a regional winner.
If you seed a tournament properly it doesn't matter if your a reg winner or not !!!
