Kentuckywrestling.com HS Rankings 2014/2015 - FEBRUARY 13

Topic ID: 11663 | 46 Posts

Happy Valentines Day!  I'm guessing many of us will spend it with our dates in a gym somewhere.  Sorry for the delay, but Dutch and I got busy at work then I fell asleep last night.

The process for next week will be: 1) post updated rankings with region results reflected (Monday) and 2) post state preview with predicted results (Wednesday).

Good luck to everyone!  Hope the weather cooperates and we can all enjoy these exciting weekends.

WR Rankings 2014_15 FEB13.pdf

Thanks.

FYI, Tate Smith of Trinity (listed at No. 4 in 220) isn't listed as competing in regionals

Same for St. X's 195 who is listed fourth

Thank you. But didn't Louie Regaldo lose to Lonnie Ussleman???

Really? So many of the brackets didn't get released early so I quit looking at them.

Thanks.

And didn't Usleaman lose to like 50 other kids? You can't look at the result of one match.

Yes he beat Louie at capital city classic.

This is also true

He had a injury at state duals against Meade Co. Not sure what's up.

Also forgot to mention team scores. I have a dead heat at the top with Trinity and Union (alpha order for now). A small gap back to FC and CC then the pack.

Without Tate Smith I have to say Union is the major favorite at this point.

Yes. A lot of them were posted late.

Ya but that and Vega are Louie's only instate losses. It's his worst loss for sure but like Ranger said you look at the greater body of work

I thought every point scored at 220 was going to CC since he is the only one in that weight class. There are other injuries to point scorers that will have an impact on the team race. You just never know and that's what makes our sport the greatest.

Wow quite a drop for Brady Emerson. Hope the kid can pick himself back up and have a good regional/state tournament.

I think 138 is by far the deepest weight in the state. Probably by a factor of 2 over any other weight. With that Emerson has not been consistent since dropping down. It will take a high level effort every match at this weight to make the podium at state.

Here I tought 138 would be one of the weaker weight classes before the season started.

Me too, on the 138!

Hey ranger new to the site. I know its a tuff job to rank kids because matches dont get posted and kids move weight classes so thanks for getting rankings out for us. One thing at 152lb hawes from eastern has beat hoffman from fern creek 3 times at 160. He has three loses on the year one to a indiana placer at 170 also little from north hardin at 160 and barton beat him 11-5 @ the dragon. Once again not dragging you doin i know its extremely tuff to rank. I am extremly close to the man that used to do all of the rankings and he has repeatedly told me how tuff it is to rank kids so thank you for stepping up and getting it done.

Many thanks ranger.   Tate Smith is out.  Season ending injury.   Tate had to be one of the most improved wrestlers from last year to this.

I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on the individual rankings. That said, Henry Clay won their dual sectional, beating both Johnson Central and Lafayette.

As an aside, Landon Young won by pin at Region 7 tourney tonight in 9 seconds. Wow.

Henry clay has been hurting my brain all year. I saw them early in the season and they looked very tough and I keep expecting them to be higher in the rankings but the numbers just don't work out. That said if any team outperforms their ranking I would expect it to be Henry Clay.

I must have missed that. I wasn't sure where to fit Hoffman in with the drop and didn't see those carryover matches.

Agreed. Im sticking with Trent Johnson to take it all. 138 is crazily wide open though. Nobody clearly gonna win it all; nobody clearly not going to place either. Wouldnt be surprised to see some first round upsets at state.

As far as team rankings go after St X won region 4 today by a margin of 49 points it shows the importance of the wrestle backs associated with the overall team score. After looking at the number of qualifiers from the list of top ten schools with Union sending 13 out of 14 weight classes I think they now become the clear favorite. A perfect example of this team element is River City who won their first team title last season without a single state champion. Of the top ten teams that Ranger has listed here are the number of qualifiers per team. 1.Trinity 10 2.Union 13 3.Fern Creek 11 4.CC 10 5.St.X 13 6.Ryle 8 7.Woodford 10 8.Oldham 11 9.Lafayette 9 10.Male 7 Looking forward to a great weekend of wrestling.

Coach Matney at Sheldon Clark won his first state title in 93 without any state champions. But he did have 5 runner ups.

Coach Matney at Sheldon Clark won his first state title in 93 without any state champions. But he did have 5 runner ups.

I think North Oldham also won the title without any champs

I don't think North Oldham has won a state title

Didn't Bruce Stepp win 215?

No Bruce didnt win a state the first year Matney won his first state title. 93 May not be the year but I think it is. Sheldon Clark had 5 to finish runner up that year. Bruce won state the following 3 years

95 is the year im talking about. The 2nd year Matney won state at SCHS. In 93 Bruce did win state.

Trinity accomplished it in 1989 without a state champion. In 1990 Trinity had 3 state champs and was second to Campbell who had only 1.

Boone County won the schools only State Championship in any sport in 79 with no champs

Cole from CC isn't at 126 anymore, he's at 132 and if he was at 126 he shouldn't be over Dyess because he lost to him multiple times. Dyess also beat Ruttman at Regions.

Ruttman has four wins over Daniel this season and at this point rankings don't mean anything anymore

Agreed.  Ranking don't mean anything anymore.

Actually, they mean EXACTLY the same as they did a week ago or a month ago or in the fall.

Time for some humble pie.

Ruttman has four wins over Daniel this season and at this point rankings don't mean anything anymore

Actually, the wins Ruttman had over Dyess don't mean anything. Dyess won when it counted.

Boone County won the schools only State Championship in any sport in 79 with no champs

Boone County won a State title in football sometime in the 80's when Shaun Alexander was their rumming back

Agreed. Im sticking with Trent Johnson to take it all. 138 is crazily wide open though. Nobody clearly gonna win it all; nobody clearly not going to place either. Wouldnt be surprised to see some first round upsets at state.

Vasquez/Johnson round 3 in the semifinal.  Vasquez takes the rubber match.  The final will be against Spahr so long as Spahr gets past round 2.  Crazy deep group though.

Boone County won a State title in football sometime in the 80's when Shaun Alexander was their rumming back

Shaun was there in the late 90's I believe he graduated 96 or 97, I know I played against them when he was there.

They had lost in title game 4 times. 87,88,92,94

I kinda disagree with Trent Johnson taking 138 all the way, now don't get me wrong Trent Johnson is an amazing wrestler for his age and will have his time for titles but this may not be the year. Trent Johnson will have to take out Blake gamble, who is also an amazing wrestler for his age, and Vasquez who was the runner-up last year.

I like Johnson over Vasquez. I've seen him wrestle 3 times and has beaten highly ranked kids. He's solid technically doesn't appear that he could ever rattle.

Gamble has been wrestling well. I look for him to turn a few heads this weekend. Johnson County as a whole has been doing well on the mats lately. I think JC will suprise a few folks at state.

Most definitely, but do you believe gamble can beat Johnson or can Johnson beat gamble

I like Johnson over Vasquez. I've seen him wrestle 3 times and has beaten highly ranked kids. He's solid technically doesn't appear that he could ever rattle.

I believe Gamble can beat Johnson but Johnson would for sure be the favorite in the match. Geordon Blanton is one that I believe

Is ready to take a huge step forward at state this year also.

Either way it will be exciting to watch. But even with the draw I stand by Trent as my pick for 138

honestly i look for alot of upsets at state this year, i agree with the whole rankings don't mean anything. how are they gonna work about with all the snow thats been coming down?
