What effect will snow have on state tournament? If we get what we are supposed to , many teams won't practice all week.
SNOW!!!

Can't believe people are not talking about this?
I know, we probably won't be in school all week. 12" of snow and state of emergency is not good for state tournament
JCPS kids are not allowed to practice, so they will be at a big disadvantage (Yes they do suspend coaches for having practices) with brutal cold travel to Lexington will be hard. and I bet the horse barn will be cold. Sounds like what happens to state duals every other year.
I guess I'm going to try and keep my son cardio up . I guess we could wrestle in the snow. Lol
Not sure what the rest of the state got. Up here in Nky we got about 4 inches. Snow has stopped. So probably no school tomorrow but should be back to school on Wed.
10 inches in Lex and Eastern KY is getting pounded
Looks like you guys got popped pretty good!
Has not stopped snowing at all in NKY florence is getting hammered ??
No snow in Newport/Dayton area in about 1-2 hours.
Most region 8 schools will have 12-15 inches by 3:00am. We very cold temps to follow the rest of the week. I see Sheldon Clark being out of school for the remainder of the week.
I would say alot of areas of Ky. will not be allowed bus travel Thurs. night after school. Has a State Tourney ever been delayed a week? This could play out to be a very unfair tournament for alot of Ky. wrestlers. Weight cuts, no practice, possible no participation.
Let's think positive and hope this clears up tonight and the road crews get things cleared out by Thursday anyway. I'm not sure what the KHSAA protocol is, but I've heard in the past that the show will go on with those who make it.
It's 9:00 pm and the snow is basically done falling. The only way we could run into problems is if the extreme cold makes it difficult to continue the clearing of the roads. I think we will be good to go come Friday. Let's get it on!
I hope this weather does not keep anyone from making it to the horse park. Hoping everything works out and all the kids that busted their butts get to wrestle this weekend
Bring them in early...I am sure Lexington area schools or Carr Academy and Scott County as well will get them mat time..I would suggest calling coaches and planning NOW....
What's the Lexington area looking like today?
main roads are pretty decent considering the snow we got. But side roads are a mess. What's the Lexington area looking like today?
Is it legal for teams to train together at a centralized location?

I would not say train together, but with their own team at a site I would say is probably ok. I'm checking with my a.d. and going to see if he will allow us to have other teams come in on Thursday so they could get mat time in.Is it legal for teams to train together at a centralized location?
Guessing that answer will be no. That sounds like a scrimmage.
By this time in season most skills are at the top. Main thing is to keep them conditioned and weight down .
I know western hills use to open there mats up when we were in Frankfort and I believe a lexington school has in the past. I'll see what he says. I'm willing to be there even if my teams not thereGuessing that answer will be no. That sounds like a scrimmage.

I would assume if no coaches were there then yes it would be legal unless the coach told everyone and made it required.
I know it is early but are there any updates concerning whether or not the state tourney will go on as scheduled?
2015 Wrestling Weather Update
As of February 17, 9:00 a.m. (ET) - The State Wrestling Tournament, to be held in Lexington this weekend, is still on schedule as of this time. Please continue to check khsaa.org for ongoing updates.
This is straight from the KHSAA website.
A lot of schools used to head down a day early and practice with their team only at a local school before heading over to check weight at the venue. Using a schools facilities is not a scrimmage.
Half the state will not have school this week at all and will have no facility to practice. Add two pound weight allowance. No kid should have his season or career end bc a once in 25 yr snow storm kept him from cutting weight. I would support rescheduling if I knew it could be done easily but that is probably not happening no matter what.
Say there are schools snowed out all week. Can the KHSAA give a weight allowance for the state tournament?
I don't agree lack of scholl should equal weight allowance. There are plenty of things kids can do at home to keep the weight down (burpees, jump rope etc.). People in prison manage to get ripped without equipment afterall.
I'm going to work mine in his own personal gym, its called snow shovel.
I'm going to work mine in his own personal gym, its called snow shovel.
Excellent point! Effective too.
Johnson County has already called school off for the entire week.
Ohio county cancelled all week as well.
I was just told if the school district does not allow the kids to practice on days they are off due to weather (has to be school policy) then everyone will be allowed 1 pound (every wrestler in the state). This is how I understood the person.

KHSAA rules state its illegal, Its not like back in the old days when Jtown Waggener and Central would practice together or when Eastern and Fern Creek would practice together in the 90's.
After the nasty ice storm of 2001 I think and they didnt miss a beat at the state tourney, this will be easy

These are kids. you ever been to the Mtns of ky? There are kids that won't be able to access a road for 5 days. If you're really worried about a kid weighing in 2 lbs heavier affecting who wins state title then I don't know what to say. The wrestler who has the best technique, muscle fitness and cardio will still do what he has to do this weekend to win. I think it's reasonable and fair to make exceptions when areas of state get nearly two feet of snow and the whole state is covered.
I know you can't "together". But if I'm allowed, I'm willing to open my mats up to other teams to practice. Not with my team or others, just on there own at my facility.KHSAA rules state its illegal, Its not like back in the old days when Jtown Waggener and Central would practice together or when Eastern and Fern Creek would practice together in the 90's.
Woke up to another 3-4 inches in central KY and the low tomorrow is -18 but yeah ya know prisoners stay fit in prison so no need to consider a weight allowance.
As of 6 am still on as schedule with a 1 lb allowance from khsaa website
1 lb makes sense. I don't think I've ever seen a 2 lb allowance. I think KHSAA should at least meet to discuss the possibility of a 1 week postponement, but I think that is unlikely to happen. What are the rules for athletics if say there is no school Friday? I know where I am if the event is on a school day and the school is closed then the team is not allowed to participate. That would be a shame. Off the top of my head I'm sure there would be a lot of wrestlers missing from many regions, including all of 8, and most likely everything south of I64 in 7.
Very unfair to Ky. Wrestling to not reschedule. Many wrestlers that qualified will not be in attendance. I'm sure most counties will not release buses at all. Many programs don't have the parent involvement to get these kids to state. Conditions outside are going to be horrible, but what do you think the average temperature on the arena floor will be. I'm know it would be difficult to reschedule but it can happen. We don't let these kids go to practice or school for their safety but we hold a State Tournament in the same conditions.
At this point I just don't think it can happen. The arena is booked for the following weekend as well. It would have to be scheduled during the week. It's probably too late to get another arena, and I would bet anything there has never been a contingency plan so we will get what we get.
Totally agree No-Ox. At this rate lexington will not have school this week. How can we expect johnson county and pike county to get to horse park if even those close by can barely manage. And I don't expect many districts to allow for bus usage or a single practice in their wrestling room all week. Factor in the artic temps and this is a once in a lifetime type weather event for much of the state. Reschedule the tourney.

Totally agree, but how can that happen? The lack of communication coming from KHSAA is frankly astounding to me. I would like to see KHSAA participation rules. It's nice there has been a 1lb allowance communicated but how much of a problem would the weight be by now anyway. I know many people are worried about the weight but particpants missing because of weight won't come close to the particpants missing because of the snow. At this point I'd prefer to wait a week and use a high school with a secondary gym or something to get 6 mats. At least that way there won't be an asterisk next to the record books for kids that place.
I'm sure Hardin Co won't get buses. Something as simple as getting funds from the school to pay for expenses can't happen because SCHOOL'S OUT because of conditions. I know of a very nice arena in Union County that would work. Delay 2 weeks. Think of the wrestlers for once!!!
IF that was a possibility, would there be any place for anyone to stay? Union County is not exactly easy to get to.
I know for a fact that they will not be able to get the venue and will be out the money for this weekend. KHSAA paid for the arena for this weekend in advance and I would bet ALTECH is not willing to refund any money. Lets hope there is no more snow and they can get roads cleared.
We all have to come together and email and voice our reason to khsaa about why having the tournament this weekend would be a terrible mistake and it has to be rescheduled!
You're right big10grapple but like others have said the possibility of KHSAA budging on this is pretty slim. Really feel bad for those teams who won't be able to make it to lexington.
The KHSAA has been out of office all week due to snow. No school on Friday , but come to the Horse Park. Really???

Perhaps you should have a clue about what your talking about before posting.
I have been on the phone 3 times this morning with KHSAA working on all possibility of having the event, changing dates, moving the youth state tournament date so that HS can have it Sunday, any and all options. What information do you want when there is really none to give at this time.
Leave the logistical work to those that actually have a clue on how to do it.
I guess 14 inches of snow wasn't enough. Eastern Kentucky is getting another 2-4 inches today. With dangerous temps tomorrow this really puts region 8 in a tough spot.
Gee I don't know...how about the exact thing you just said...the KHSAA is looking into all possibilities along with a decision making time frame. Not everyone lives in Lexington, has readily available transportation, a place to stay...or maybe some people will need to move reservations so they are not charged an extra night's stay etc. My comment would never had been made if something, anything, had been put out there...even if it's relatively uninformative statement you just made. How hard would that have been? Can you imagine if this was a basketball discussion board and it was the high school sweet 16 in jeopardy? I'm sure in one of your three phone conversations this morning it has already been discussed a decision making time frame. I have a lot of logistics as well as project management experience since you seem keen to attack my 'resume'. The main error of this type of situation is lack of communication. Even if you haven't been able to make changes yet, I would be very surprised if you haven't discused a time frame for when those decisions for changes would need to be made in order to be successful. It wouldn't hurt at all to put something out there along the lines of the KHSAA is examining the situation, final decisions to be made will be announced by 5pm Thursday or something. Please channel all input/concerns via email to (set up an email address specific to this event). That isn't a lot to ask. I'm sure all involved are under a lot of stress and are fielding more input that can be organized and useful. That being said, a simple communication probably would have prevented a lot of that in the first place.
If the KHSAA does not/cannot change dates, I bet it would not be because Alltech would not refund the money. In my dealings with them, Alltech has been a great corporate citizen.
Anyway, would the contract be with Alltech or the horse park?

Alltech owns naming rights to the Arena. The Kentucky Horse Park is the power in this situation.
I already have kids that are saying they might not be able to attend because of parent decisions. Very good kids. If KHSAA loses money so what. I have been a business owner for 30 years, I've lost money on several occasions. Reschedule!!!!
How about we cut the decision-makers some slack, folks? Anyone who's ever been involved in any type of large-scale logistics planning has got to realize this is a nightmare of epic proportions. Rather than put out updates which could change, (I would guess) they're doing everything possible to get things right before they broadly communicate anything...sounds like a wise choice to me. They've already posted a couple of updates on the KHSAA website and I imagine they'll keep doing that whenever they make any other decisions. Maybe we should all try to sit tight & think positive.
Re: the hotels, try giving them a call to ask about their cancellation/re-schedule policy. I was pleasantly surprised when I called mine...you may be, too!
I'd hate it, but imo they would cancel it before they would reschedule. Just a bad situation. Hoping for the best, but don't have alot of faith in the khsaa at this point
I agree. i think there are so many things in play, and it's such an ever evolving situation, that any update at this point would be pointless as it will likely change. My thought is they have to do everything possible to hold it this weekend at the horse park, and that will likely mean no real decision until tomorrow. I don't think the KHSAA just doesn't care about wrestling. It's just that this event is so large, and difficult to reschedule. Comparing wrestling to how they would manage if it were another sport isn't fair. Wrestling events are just a different beast and logistically so much more difficult to run. We have to get over the "redheaded step child syndrome" we tend to have. This isn't the KHSAA's fault...it's just an incredible case of bad luck. How about we cut the decision-makers some slack, folks? Re: the hotels, try giving them a call to ask about their cancellation/re-schedule policy. I was pleasantly surprised when I called mine...you may be, too!
I know it is about the kids and getting to wrestle, but there is a lot of other things to consider.
I know my nephews team has had hotels booked for 6 months and we have a large number of rooms. The hotel is consistently booked for events and for the next three weeks will not have the number of rooms available that they need as a team and the rate goes up b/c of # of rooms from 100 a night to 135 a night.
Two of the coaches work outside of the school system and have to schedule their vacation day last year in order to be able to help me coach on Friday. If the event is rescheduled the chance they will be able to attend on another Friday is very slim. Not to mention the parents of my wrestlers not sure the number, but I know several of them have called with concerns of rescheduling and not being able to take off work.
I know each school's administration and situation is different, but the above gives you an idea of some of the things rescheduling can cause.
Now all this being said if the KHSAA would let people know if it is on or cancelled before Thursday night it would give people more time to cancel or reschedule hotel reservations apply for time off work (if they can let their employer know they can work this Friday in exchange for another, then maybe they can attend at the later date). Also, it would allow those athletes who are struggling to make weight with no practice to relax the next two days and not stress over the weight cutting.
At this point, for the team I cheer for it would be more stressful to reschedule (I know this is not the situation for every team)!
Wouldn't some type of decision have to come today considering most teams are traveling up tomorrow
Let me point something out: in 1996 or 1997 (if I remember right), there was a MASSIVE ice storm that hit what was then Region 1 (present regions 1 and 2 combined)...and the KHSAA told the teams "if you can make it, wrestle because we can't reschedule state"...EVERY ONE OF THOSE TEAMS found a way to get there, and even though the tournament took close to 18 hours to run (8 man brackets but teh power kept going out), they got it in. While based on the pictures on twitter I've seen it may be better for those teams who have a pre-dominantly rural populationt to reschedule, I don't see it happening.
I have a buddy who is one of the top refs in this state (not saying much I realize to many of you, but I also know many coaches ask for him when he's at their tournaments), and he has scraped his driveway and moved his car to an area where he can get out easier so he can get to Lexington. I know many of the refs who officiate will not be able to get off work next weekend if we reschedule. And there are only a HANDFUL of gyms that I can think of that could even hold 5 much less 6 mats. While many here won't be happy with my next statement, it's what will more than likely happen, and honestly what needs to happen: WRESTLE. It sucks for kids who can't be there because of teh weather, but when is life ever fair?!

This is exactly what I meant by the lack of communication. It is an incredible case of bad luck, however a little bit of communication would go a long way, even if nothing is decided yet. It would be nice to know when they plan on having a final decision for example. I am not even saying so for myself personally as it is a very short distance for us to travel and we don't even require accomodations, bussing, etc. That is all I meant by my previous post. Also, I wasn't comparing it to the sweet 16 as an example on how to manage the event. I brought that up because the apparent decision maker that jumped at me for my post was so offended, they should be happy it isn't the sweet 16 because the hate mail would be flooding this site. By and large I think the wrestling community has been very patient with this situation and previous situations (for example last years change to the championship format). I was actually trying to defend the KHSAA in that there probably isn't much they can do at this point. The negative comment was about the probably lack of contingency plan, which feel free to attack me if I was wrong...I would deserve it! If there wasn't one, then learn from this situation and plan one in the future. Again that isn't a lot to ask, even if I don't know what I'm talking about logistically.
One last nail in the proverbial coffin.... BASKETBALL DISTRICTS START MONDAY!!!
All of us know we are second rate compared to basketball. I bring this up because a lot of the larger gyms will be scheduled for Basketball districts. I looked at the ALLTECH events page and they ave things scheduled for the next 3 weekends, so state would not be there if they rescheduled.
Just speaking of region 1 roads are clearing nicely
even though temps low sun is working wonders.
I'm sure it is different in the eastern part.
Oh the irony! If there is no state tournament this year, then there is no 4 time undefeated high school state champ at 220...

I don't know about that storm, but there was a bad ice storm in Lexington in 2003 or 2004 time frame. My street in Lexington was out of power the entire week. It happened Valentine's Day weekend. It was a very bad storm and power was certainly an issue. That really can't be compared to this situation however. Salt can melt ice. A foot or more of snow has to be cleared before salt can even be put down. Fayette County can clear the main roads, but even the neighborhoods in Fayette County are going to take through the weekend to clear. I would hate to live on a court right now because I would bet it only got worse once the plows came through not better (plowed in for example but I digress). Many of the counties involved have ZERO equipment for this type of event. I really don't think you can make the same comparison. Rescheduling would be ideal for the wrestlers but it would be extremely difficult logistically. The first problem is venue, which is why I said a high school because anything else would likely not be available. The venue would also have to be easy to get to (think near an interstate), in an area large enough to accomodate travelers hotel, restaurant, etc. Worst case maybe you split the weights and use more than one high school (upper weights at one site/lower at another). There is NO perfect solution, but I would prefer a solution that had the potential to involve more wrestlers rather than fewer.
JC1 is on the right track!
WRESTLE...... The kids will get there, regardless of all this complaining and hypotheticals. A weight allowance is ridiculous, you're fortunate to get another pound. There is already a so-called "growth allowance." Two pounds for doing nothing. WRESTLE !!!!!
Totally agree on the weight. If you're that far off weight after one week I would wonder how you tested into your weight in the first place. As I understand it, you would get an extra pound for Friday anyway. I don't know if that means you then get another pound Saturday, but it would seem you would...so there's your two pounds.
Fayette County just called off school and all activities for Thurs and Fri. This is going to get interesting.
After hearing about fayette county, the tournament has to be rescheduled or something. Point blank. Kids have worked their butts of all year for this opportunity only for Mother Nature to take it away. It would be a shame if this is not rescheduled
I am thinking if the tournament is going to go forward the KHSAA needs to communicate with every district asking for an exception to the no school no activity rule. That to me is the biggest issue. If Jefferson bullitt Oldham and surrounding schools don't have school they can't participate. That's where I see a huge communication issue with KHSAA. Wrestling is going to happen so let's see what we can do to get these boys to the tournament
hahaha at all the tough guys. I'm concerned about the safety and welfare of high school kids and their families. Stop pounding your chests.
Oh the irony! If there is no state tournament this year, then there is no 4 time undefeated high school state champ at 220...
I know that is a comment towards his dad but that kid (Austin) works his butt off everyday with sometimes extra practices and lifting and that comment may be deserving to his dad but not Austin.

That might be difficult to do with nobody there to answer the phone or email though.
Quit bi****** everyone will find a way to get there. The kids are ready to wrestle and already thinking about state this weekend. The show is a go. See everyone at the horsepark!!
Come hell or high-water my kid will be there. Even if it takes me awhile to get there, it will happen. I am very surprised about the 1lb allowance, but I am not telling my son. We have found ways to get work in this week. I just can wrap my head around the amount of work it would take to reschedule this event. With 32 man brackets for all weight classes we would need to use 3-4 gyms to make it happen.
KHSAA just officially announced the tournament was postponed until March 10 - 11. I actually applaud the KHSAA for making the move and give them kudos for the gutsy call. Can't say the same thing for the youth state tournament which refused to move from Sunday. In the end though I think this is the best solution.
http://khsaa.org/021815-state-wrestling-tournament-postponed/
Good job KHSAA.
I don't think I could blame the youth tournament. Another several weeks of practice has a big impact on teams. I know some of the clubs have to pay for practice space at the schools.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 18, 2015
In the interest of the safety and welfare of our competitors, coaches, workers and officials, and to ensure that participation experience for the student-athletes is optimal, the KHSAA has postponed the State Wrestling Championships, originally scheduled for February 19-21, until March 9-11.
“KHSAA State events are large-scale undertakings, and with the expansion of the State Tournament several years ago, we are very limited in options for holding the event,” said Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We absolutely have to be able to put down at least eight mats to get the tournament completed in two days, and that in and of itself limits our options. We are thankful our hosting partners at the Alltech Arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park were able to work out new dates. We tried to work cooperatively with another event that is scheduled for Sunday and rearrange schedules, but that group was unwilling to move, leaving us very few options.”
KHSAA Assistant Commissioner Michael Barren, who oversees the sport of Wrestling, added, “we have been able in very short order to rebook the large block of rooms we use at the official headquarters, and reschedule vendors and secure the arena on the first available three-day period for that facility. It was critical in working with the Commissioner that we make this decision as early as possible in the interest of the safety and welfare of our competitors, coaches, workers and officials. We will allow a one pound growth allowance for each of the weight classes in an additional effort to accommodate this postponement.”
Tackett stated that a great many options were reviewed before finalizing this move. “These championships are years in the making and scheduling, and it isn’t easy to simply move any of them. I know that Mike (Barren) and his tournament staff will work with the folks at Alltech Arena to get things moved in on March 9, and utilize the regular schedule for March 10 and 11, as we work to get this event completed and allow the students their well-earned opportunity to compete. I am sure from the micro-view of the many constituents, there will be second guessing and other alternatives suggested, but my job, and that of our office, is to weigh all of the factors and make the best decision we can for the entire state. The one pound growth allowance would have been a problem in the past, but with the emphasis on safe weight management, the wrestlers are required to be at or near their normal weight and should be able to maintain without issues. It will be difficult for our office to manage this event nearly simultaneously with the start of our girls’ basketball tournament, but we have successfully managed overlapping events before and will call on our legions of volunteers and workers to ensure that both events are first class for the students and all involved.”

Moving to a Tuesday Wednesday is poor judgement on KHSAA part. Cut the contract with the POS arena and get a different facility. IMO they should have kept it this weekend. Champions find a way to get things done. The champions and kids that will be on the podium i can guarentee would get to lexington on time for weigh ins if it were this weekend.
Total Bull. Kids are trying to keep their weight down. Crock of S****

Not if the school district says no.
So what if a school district says no because they will be missing school 2 more days after this week of no school. Dont be soft. Champions would find a way
^ lol the show is not a go

If the school district says they can't compete, they can't compete it has nothing to do with being a champion. If you took the time to research things instead of speaking from a place of ignorance it might make sense to you.
Crazy

Alright bud, could you please provide the documentation so that we could all learn something today?
All the hard asses sayin JUST WRESTLE GIT R DONE are so incredibly tone deaf to the realities of the complications this epic storm created. It's a smart move to postpone.
Imagine there are some kids in the hills of east Ky very happy to see the state considered their situations and didnt just ignore their condition like politicians and decision makers often do.
Now I have one question....will teams be able to compete these next two weeks? Maybe schedule a dual tourney with some nearby teams? Or is the season over until March 10?
And fyi, the coaches association reached out to khsaa abd we got no response. We had no imput as an association on this decision
This just sucks in general. I get it having to postpone, but I'm sick because maybe this was a missed opportunity to get out of that awful arena.....for good! Also, speaks volumes about KHSAA that they ignored input from the coaches association yet again!
Just read the press release again. Pitiful excuses "We tried to work cooperatively with another event that is scheduled for Sunday and rearrange schedules, but that group was unwilling to move, leaving us with very few options." Or "It will be difficult for our office to manage this event nearly simultaneously with the start of our girls' basketball tournament, but we have successfully managed overlapping events before and will call on our legions of volunteers and workers to ensure that both events are first class for the students and all involved."
I would hope the KYWCA would have some insight on this as I am sure most of the first quote was fabricated. Do 4 games of a sweet sixteen(sixteen pre determined teams) in Bowling Green really have more prestige than a 32 man/14 bracket/88 team tournament going on in Lexington? What a D!@K!!
I agree with safety, well being of individuals, but don't make BS excuses or blame someone else. And last I checked the wrestlers, coaches, officials, and table workers were the necessary parts of the tournament not Julian Tackett!
epic storm....give me a break.

If there's a contract in place (I'm guessing there is) then switching venues is most likely not an option as long as the arena is willing to offer an alternate date.
I agree it sucks in general...it's a no-win situation for everyone.
epic storm....give me a break.
LOL first paragrpah on the most well-respected weather blog in the state:
We are in the middle of one of the worst weeks of winter weather on record for the bluegrass state of Kentucky. Additional snows today are adding to a near record snowpack for many. Blowing and drifting snow is a problem, and now we have record shattering cold moving in.
you go outside much bud?

There really is no good solution here, and I guess all the kids are in the same boat but.....
It does stink if you had a kid that was peaking at the right time, now has to cool his jets and wait. (Talk about a momentum killer.)
Would love to see us get a dual, or at least a dual practice with some live wrestling, but nothing can simulate live matches. Then you have to worry about possible injuries, etc. On the other front, if someone is banged up. they have time to heal now.
Injuries could also happen at practice anyway, but well, you know what i'm saying. Just stinks all the way around.

02/18/15 – State Wrestling Tournament Postponed
February 18, 2015 2014-2015 News Releases
The problem I have is that everyone is looking out for their high school wrestler. Yes the event has been moved, but how fair is that to those that have been watching their weight, going to a gym, finding a place to work on some moves. Was this event moved because of the safety of our kids, I think not. As the youth tournament is still going on as scheduled. No one seems to be worried about them. It appears that this was a political decision and not a safety decision.

So then why do you think it was moved?? What political benefit would the KHSAA get out of moving the tournament?? As I said in another thread, the youth tournament is a day later, and a whole other, much bigger, logistical nightmare than the high school tournament. Something had to be done. A good percentage of the state is going to be off school all week, with little to no organized practice. Weight, even with a 1lb allowance was going to be a potential problem. Moving the event back allows the athletes to get back into peak form and manage their weight much easier. I think what we would have seen this weekend had the event gone on as scheduled, would have been several wrestlers missing weight, and not everybody in top form. That's not fair to the wrestlers or to spectators. If the KHSAA wanted to kill wrestling or didn't care about it, then I think they would have moved forward as scheduled.

The political part is that some regions were complaining that there kids would not be able to wrestle. Since this is a winter sport things like this happen. It does not matter if kids are off school. There are still places to workout. How come the coaches did not get permission to use the facilities (exceptions can be made). If a wrestler knows that they have to be at a certain weight why would they need an allowance. The weight allowance is abused anyway, but that is a different discussion. Why would a wrestler know that the State Tournament was coming up need to get back in to peak form. They should stay in peak form (other places to workout and exercise. Again these are all excuses. If we would have seen wrestlers miss weight, then that would have been their own fault. As high school wrestler they should know what needs to be done to make weight no matter what the weather is. If they don't make weight they don't wrestle, this should not be any different than any other tournament. This is fair to wrestlers and spectators as it would be the wrestlers responsibility, just like any other tournament. Making weight and the weather is the nature of the sport. Quit making excuses to accommodate the few.
There are several pro's and con's for each decision of going forward or postponing. I can see if they went forward many of the athletes
would be absent, you would have a watered down tournament and have no clear champions. postponing for 3 weeks is also ridiculus.
If you are going to hold the tournament on a tuesday or a wednesday anyway, why not next week? or the first available time the arena is not in use? 3 weeks is just such a long time for many to hold weight

So just to be clear, you have no issues with kids being snow bound and unable to travel?? And no issues with kids who couldn't practice? I know even here in Kenton County, all activities were prohibited (yes even basketball, where some senior nights were cancelled). I'd guess most kids don't have access to mats if they can't get into the school. In this case, I don't think they were going out the way to accommodate the few. I think a very high percentage of schools and participants are affected. Every program in Northern Ky has been affected, and we didn't have it nearly as bad as many other portions of the state. I just don't see how "politics" plays a role in this. And I just don't see how anything is gained or how the tournament would be so much better by holding it this weekend despite all of the negative circumstances.
From what I understand representatives from Union County have reached out to the KHSAA office and offered the John Arnold Arena for next weekend. Doubt they will change what they have already set though.

Nothing like a 7 hour trip (on a bus) and no place to stay to hold the Ky state tourney.
Talk about having no one in attendance, even fewer would travel to the far reaches of the state.
Goldberg...give it a rest dude...sick of reading your crap...the best decision was made !
Bout sick of hearing the weight allowance bull. If you are a varsity wrestler an have made it to the state tourney and can't find a way to maintain your weight for 5 days then maybe you shouldn't have cut down so far in the first place. Just sayin
Really! Tuesday and a Wednesday? Going to be hard for a lot of Parents, friends and fans to attend to support these kids who have worked their butts off. Most school systems do not let their schools off for the Tournament. And Colleges definitely do not, so there goes our past participants and siblings attendance. As to "Champions will get there if they really want to", that is not fair. Coaches are employees of School Boards and have to follow guidelines. Also most of Kentucky is rural and the cold temperatures have complicated matters. Side roads are not a priority for road crews and like most people in this state, I do not own a 4-wheel drive. Even if the road has been cleared there is also a wind advisory so some roads are getting blowing snow. The sun melts snow on side of road, once the sun retreats, can cause black ice to form. Safety, yes, is a major issue to even get out of driveways and hills. Situation stinks though but am glad they get to wrestle but sticking it on a mid week time-frame not cool.
Youth tournament is not school related.
I know the media never blows things out of proportion....bud. lol
Mid week defiantly sucks!! Think of the parents and fans that travel every weekend to watch there child countless miles driven an hours spent in a gym. Some of those will now not be able to attend the grand finale that everyone has been waiting on. I know a good quick solution was prob a nightmare to come up with but during the week just blows especially if you live 3-4 hrs away
Well that stinks! Oh well who needs fans anyway.
GOO question you may be able to answer
Has there ever been a wrestling state title won in MARCH?
I just drove to work today, one hour away. Took me an hour and a half during the morning commute. Came back home. No issues. It snows and the world's coming to an end.

Again, mid week while not the best option, was the only option. The horsepark is booked for the next several weekends. And almost every sport holds tournament games during the day (including wrestling as the tourney always starts on Friday)....basketball, volleyball etc. This option is much better than no tourney at all.
Well that stinks! Oh well who needs fans anyway.
GOO question you may be able to answer

I believe Ohio's state tourney is in March
Was there ANY solution that would have made all parties happy? No. I'm sure the kids from the eastern half of the state are thankful of this decision because of the amount of snow received, coupled by the limited resources available to clear the roads would've spelled doom for them if they continued with the tournament this weekend. Good for them. So Johnny has to maintain his weight for a little while longer. Big deal. These kids that earned their way to the big show deserve just as much of the opportunity to participate as the others who live in more urban areas. 3 weeks is a lot of time, I'll grant that. Having it during the week does suck. But when you give everyone the same chance, we all need to pull together and make it work. Everyone is in the same boat with no scheduled competitions, limited practicing and maintaining weight. At least everyone now has a chance to compete. Isn't that what really matters? Just pray we don't have another similar weather situation on our hands then. If so, all hell is gonna break loose.
Well that stinks! Oh well who needs fans anyway.

Has there ever been a wrestling state title won in MARCH?
Wow now that was a good question. I never researched this until today.
My findings. I found the dates of every state tourney except 64,65,73,84,and 86. (Was not born in 64-65) (I was only in the 1st grade in 73 and didn't know anything about wrestling yet) (84,85 I could probably find if I search my records hard enough)
The earliest state tourney I found was in 1980 on Feb 8th and 9th
The latest was in 2004 was held on Feb 26th, 27th, and 28th. (Since this is a leap year even if the tourney lasted past midnight it still finished in Feb.)
The one interesting thing I found was that in 1967 it looks like it was a 3 day tourney. (Can any of the even older farts than me confirm this)
So we are making history this year, every single state champ and placer as well as the team champ will be forever in the history books of KY wrestling! I like this idea.
Thanks GOO
History books? Are you kidding me. KHSAA has almost no history of Ky wrestling. It has become a personal challenge of mine to try and get this resolved.
Thanks so much for your efforts
Well I've run into a road block. I have everything that I aquired (I've been in KY wrestling since 1982) and everything KHSAA has (Complete brackets back to 71, partial back to 65) and its not but about 70% complete. That may be a passing grade in most schools but its only a "D" or low "C" grade. Not good enough.
The only options I have left are.
1. Getting some records from teams that have been around in the 60's (I have tried with little success)
2. Getting newspaper results. (This is my last resort, its a painstaking process).
GOO , who posted all the old brackets on the KHSAA web site.
I gave Thacket all the brackets I had 71 and up the rest came from Dennis Walls I believe.
Coomes used to have a ton of records from Jefferson County until someone took the file cabinet
Ken Bachman had done quite a bit of work on past state tournaments.
Also, Jerry Schindler, who used to coach at Trinity has put past years together.
I just drove to work today, one hour away. Took me an hour and a half during the morning commute. Came back home. No issues. It snows and the world's coming to an end.
Good for you. Not everyone is able to do that just yet, so consider yourself among the lucky. Do you not realize that all areas of the state are free and clear of the snow just yet?
I know the media never blows things out of proportion....bud. lol
What media has done this?
The main roads are clear. It's the back roads in rural areas covered with snow that adds to the risk. Some schools won't let buses out to travel to ALLTECH in this wintry weather and more ice and snow are projected. heaven forbid, we have a horrible accident going to and from the venue. Better safe than sorry.

The KHSAA is also worried that if something does happen, and heaven forbid it does/did, that it too could be held liable. That's not something they want, I'd guess.
I was looking on the KHSAA site and noticed that 1998 is the last year listed with results. Is there somewhere else to look for pre-98 results/brackets?
Just noticed ATM has a very big week in march with the state tournament 9 an 10 or 10 an 11 dapper dan the 15th and border wars the 17th if I read everything right
Moving the tournament is the right decision. No weather conditions will keep kids from competing and the state tournament should take precedent over any school or extracurricular activity. I would expect all legitimate contenders for a place on the stand to be there.
That being said, I will be very interested to see who is officiating on a Tuesday and Wednesday in March. I don't think anyone would disagree that for every great official we have there are at least 3 poor if not absolutely terrible officials. I hope it doesn't happen but I'll bet that there are a few blown calls that decide important matches. Officials are human too and on occasion the moment can be too much to handle.
Low-single-05,
I invite you to come out and be an absolutely terrible official and blow a few calls. From my own experience, things look a lot different 3-5 feet from the action than it looks from the coaches corner or much less, from the stands.
I was wondering about officials as well. I personally know two officials who were going to officiate the State Tourney, but can no longer do so because of not being allowed to miss work (for 2 days). I see low-single-05 point. Where will we get refs (decent refs) to officiate the tournament, and if they cannot get enough what then?
Officials have already been selected. They are listed in the program. I only know of 1 that cannot be there.
Goldberg...give it a rest dude...sick of reading your crap...the best decision was made !
The best decision was made for certain regions, but not for all. beside if you don't like reading crap then stop.
Officiating for 3-5 feet away? Outside of the occasional locking hands, finger grab, and obviously pinning situations there is no reason for an official to be anywhere close to the competitors. If you want to see excellent examples of officiating please find the time to tune into the BIG 10 Network when the are covering wrestling. Notice the lack of an official in the picture until there is a top and bottom situation.
Admittadely, officiating a sport as dynamic as ours is very difficult. I would argue that having significant wrestling experience is imperative in order to anticipate positions and directions of movement as well as likely scenarios for rules infractions. In addition they have long days and are on their feet and bellies for most of those days. What they do is important to our sport because without them we wouldn't be wrestling at all.
1) There are without question bad wrestling officials
2) We should never assume that bad officials intend to impact matches
3) Rescheduling the state tournament for 2 weekdays may have an impact on officiating
4) Following is a link to the BTN wrestling schedule so that thegreatgatsby can see good officiating
http://btn.com/2014/11/24/btn-announces-2014-15-wrestling-coverage/
there was only one official not able to adjust their schedule to work the postponed tournament. This would have been his first time working State and I don't think they are going to replace him.

If the officiating is as bad as the crew that was there for the youth Sunday, some of these matches could see some crazy things. There was some good officiating for sure, no question, and I do not question how hard it is or can be, however I saw calls that were absolutely horrible, and it made me question if they had any experience at all, let alone what match they were watching......

Wow "Coach". That's an awful broad brush you're painting with.
I hope you're not teaching your kids to blame the refs when they lose. If you are, Sounds like you're part of the problem.
I won't say I "blame" refs , but I do tell my kids to don't put it in the officials hands. I.e. don't stall, wrestle clean, wrestle in the center, and don't keep a match close if you can help it. If you do those things, most of the matches take care of themselves and ref will not have a baring on the outcome.Wow "Coach". That's an awful broad brush you're painting with.
I hope you're not teaching your kids to blame the refs when they lose. If you are, Sounds like you're part of the problem.
There are times I'll say the ref cost us the match, but most times I tell them that you can't put yourself in the situation to let that happen

I hope you're not teaching your kids to blame the refs when they lose. If you are, Sounds like you're part of the problem.
Please do not assume, I am not blaming the refs for any outcome what so ever. It was just a simple observation while watching. I saw quite a few calls that were extremely confusing. And I by far do not have my kids blame it on the refs. Like I said, I know the refs have a hard enough time as it is being in that position having to make calls as they come. I much like Coachteater praise to not leave it in the officials hands, and to leave it on the mat.
Don't lose sight of the fact that I did state there were many good things I saw for officiating. I will clear it up and be more precise, most of the matches I did watch had no issues. There were a few things/calls I saw that created that moment, how did he call that, and why? Even with justification I would have scratched my head. There was no blaming for losses on my part, I had no dogs in the fight. Just a mere observer.
The statement to me, was merely saying that if a similar situation was to arrise for the high school boys, there could be some crazy outcomes due to crazy calls. Maybe horrible wasn't the politically correct verbiage to use, nor saying the "crew" beause there was good officiating. There were just some bad calls. They did not affect the outcome from what I could tell, just flat out bad calls. Given that in a high school match, maybe it could determine the outcome which is what we don't want to happen, like I teach the kids, don't leave the match in the ref's hands.
You mean to tell me that some POS ref made a few calls that left you wondering what he was thinking while working an entire 16 man bracket or two without taking a break? I bet he has it out for your team too. That sorry sack should be taken out back and drug behind some of those horses.
Obviously you are going to the extreme here considering I said none of the sort, sorry if I offended your stripes. I am done with this convo.
Counting down to Mar. 10th
i heard a coach say to a young ref in the hospitality room "There's the cheatin' ref!" and proceed to harangue him for 5 minutes. That ref is a first year ref but he wrestled for 10 years so he knows what he is seeing as much as anybody could. I really doubt the ref had any agenda to cheat anybody. Another reason it is hard to keep refs.
