HEADS UP

Topic ID: 12640 | 71 Posts

I've heard through the grapevine that they will be charging for parking this year at the horse park.  Just a heads up.

They are I can confirm this.  Not sure what final amount that was agreed upon but it will be anywhere from $6-$10.

Is it the KHSAA that is charging for parking or the Horse Park?  I would think if you have rented their facility that the parking comes with the rental.

coaches and teams too or just spectators?  We don't use bus service we drive down in cars......

Seems like another way to hurt the sport all while making money.  Doesn't matter who is charging, KHSAA would be the profiteer from it.  They either are charging themselves or they got a deal on the rental fee and in return allowed the Horse Park to charge.  Benefits them either way.  This stinks for the people who have to pay entry, travel, lodging, etc.... now throw on another fee.

I took this from the KHSAA website.

Looks like they will be clearing the arena on Saturday before the medal rounds this year.

http://khsaa.org/wrestling/teamstateinstructions.pdf

GENERAL PUBLIC/FANS/NON PARTICIPANTS 

Tickets will be priced at $15 for all day on Friday, and $15 for Session one on Saturday. $10 for the Medal Rounds. 

An all-tournament pass will be available at the gate for $25, and will be sold through Saturday morning. 

All individuals entering the arena will need to be ticketed or admitted via the pass gate. 

The gates will open for the general public at 8:30 a.m. on Friday & 8:00 a.m. on Saturday 

Please inform your parents and non-competing squad members about this timetable. We are unable to secure the building and provide adequately enough for the safety of these individuals until the staff becomes available when the gates open.

Maybe the KHSAA can use the extra money from parking to buy new podiums for the medalist, since they allowed our old ones to be thrown away due to "not having anywhere to store them."

lol it never ends.

Gotta love the good ol  KHASS,  they always do what's right

That is pretty bad to change after these last few years .To charge anything more than a couple bucks to park means someone is banking ,I will say even though some crooks would still be scamming I would pay 5 or 10 bucks to see some kids get a decent medal and a Bracket for winning a state Title .Ky USA wrestling did however go the extra mile to honor it's champs and AAs.

It's going to look really special seeing the top 8 placers standing shoulder to shoulder on the floor getting their quarter sized medals. The KHSAA always doing the classy thing.

If that's the case then someone or everyone should find out and do something about it now even if it's putting the podium together themselves ,Then get rid of whoever is running the show .

Is it confirmed that they threw away our podium

Not confirmed, but at our seed meeting I heard that new ones are N process of being made

Maybe we could use the middle school podium that coach Roth and I built. Not sure who has it now.

I was told by a Coach that was told by Mike Barren directly that the podiums were thrown away. I haven't heard about new ones being built, but I hope that is true.

I hear there will be a new podium but they're gonna charge the kids $2.50 each to step up on it.

Also 50 cents for every time you spit in a trash can

Secret location only known by 3.

Sad and pathetic. KHSAA what an embarrassment.

The parking charge is two-fold. They make extra money on every vehicle that enters plus discourage people from leaving to get better less expensive food because if you leave you will have to pay parking again to re-enter. Win-win for the horse park and the KHSAA.

this will probably secretly make some parents hope their kids don't make state.  all about the almighty dollar, truly sad!!

Just wait till they see the way the time table is set up for finals. It looks like all medal rounds will be wrestled at the same time.

Which is, IMO, idiotic. I can understand a regular-season tourney doing this when it gets late in the night or whatever, but this is the state tournament.

I believe that all conso placement rounds will be wrestled for say  106, then the finals for 106 under lights.  Then all 113 conso matches with the 113 final next under lights.   same with all other weight classes

Enthusiast is correct from coaches I've talked to on the khsaa advisory commitee.

On the website it says Medal Round and Championship Awards Session and there are 56 matches scheduled starting at 6 pm.  Is it as stated above, or running all medal matches together at each weight?  Short version...no finals mat by itself?

It just keeps getting worse and worse

3 mats. Run 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 at same time, then final on middle mat. Repeat for each weight

I feel like this setup will take even longer. And it doesn't allow guys wrestling for medals to watch their teammates in the finals (if you're warming up).

The cynic in me feels this is just another KHSAA money grab while also attempting to get a step closer to taking away the finals mat.  Throw in no re entry parking and they've established an event that dissuades any non family fans to attend.

It is absolutely embarrassing how the KHSAA runs the KY state tournament.  I get it that its not football or basketball, but can the KHSAA do anything else to show that they absolutely hate the sport of wrestling?  They threw away podiums.  They de-valued the excitement of making it to the finals.  They hold the entire event on a dirt floor barn.  All while continually figuring out how to make more and more money year over year.

I'm embarrassed to bring friends that aren't familiar with the sport to the state finals at the horse park because of these reasons.  I brought a friend from Ohio down 3 years ago.  He had been to Ohio's state finals a few times.  His exact wording upon first entry to the horse park for the finals - "you're kidding, right?".

The KHSAA has to do better.  Point, Period, End Of Story.

Cute story ,of course most people from Ohio like to snub their nose at anything Kentucky ,

IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE TRYING TO CUT OUT THE TRANSITION TIME FROM THE END OF PLACINGS TO THE BEGINNING OF FINALS MATCHES

It will certainly diminish some of the glory of making it to finals everyone enjoys the build up and watching all the finals in a row .not a good idea at all ,I would be surprised if there is not a podium at state .Ohio does a lot of things differently they have 3 classes only 16 man Brackets ,Parents of state finalists on the floor to watch their kids who are wrestling on a raised platform .

And they win brackets .

It's not about being like other states it's about being better and catering to the fans and wrestlers , ky fans loved the pre finals celebration that got axed Ohio fans thought it was silly I liked it because the kids fans and wrestlers liked it .There are differences ky fans want it to be fun and top notch as they should .get some real medals real brackets real podiums and if the fans want separate finals that's how it should be , if they charge for parking it is what it is welcome to 2016 .

Has anyone else put the math to how long the final round will last?  Tell me where I'm wrong:

3rd thru 8th matches....10 minutes

Championship match....10 minutes

Awards ceremony.....5 minutes

Total 25 minutes per weight class X 14 weight classes = 350 minutes.....divided by 60 = 5.8 hours.

Finals end about midnight!!!

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!!

HOW CAN THEY TAKE THE EXCITEMENT OF FINALS AWAY FROM THESE BOYS!  THEY BUST THEIR BUTT ALL YEAR FOR THIS!

lol your math seems legit...and you know there's gonna be some OT matches going longer than 10 minutes. midinight finish is not out of the question. feel sorry for those upperweights waiting over 5 hours from when "finals" start and their match.

I think it will be shorter then that, but still I was figuring around 4.5 hours. Crazy. But I think the problem is, if we complain st this point, they will likely do them all at once.

It will change up a lot I thought it was neat watching the finals matches and the commentary afterwards that will be impossible if they keep it as is. It was like watching a major event or in all seriousness some pro wrestling only real i liked the commentators and their tidbits of info on certain kids coaches and they did a great job the entrance music was cool as well

stooges.jpg

Something else that may not be well publicized.  Friday and part of Saturday will be wrestled on 8 mats.  4 mats for simi-finals and beyond.

I assume this will also eliminate the pre-finals face-offs ?

Yeah if you're aren't wrestling the finals as one event consecutively there is no point in a face-off I guess.

All the finalists can have a face off

Parking will be $5 per day

Parking along I  75 is free Horseback shuttles will be first come first serve .

I agree with you here.  I don't think that Ohio is the mecca and KY should strive to be like them, rather that KY should do better.  I too think its ridiculous that they hand out small medals and don't even bother about brackets.

KY is a poorly ran tournament that capitalizes on making money for the KHSAA.  Each year it changes and there is a new twist or way to cut the experience for the wrestlers/fans and line the pockets of those who stand to profit.

Really makes me miss the days of the dungeon.  What an atmosphere to wrestle in...

I don't mind the horse park as far as size and location it's great but if everyone has issues it will be moved sooner or later .

And we've been saying this exact statement for how long now?

I know what a lot of people have been saying ,I meant I think the Horse park is fine except the dirt issue and $ but regardless where it is if the khsaa wants to gold dig they can .Horse park is roomy and modern and says KY to me and while it's not about being like all the other states .I wouldn't line to see it in some cramped school gym setting where if your a college coach your watching a ky state prospect in what looks like exactly what the rest of the country tries to stereotype KY as .

Have fun ,keep it classy though .

I agree KHSAA needs to do things differently. Being a product of Indiana which tournaments are at same locations each year(sectionals, regionals, semi-state, state), we need to secure a permanent home for finals. Also I believe a 32 man bracket is nuts, needs to be a 16 man. Change the format leading to state. Have your districts with 4 advancing, then 4 regional sites where 4 advance, you can add something before districts like Indiana, a 4 tier process. Seeded brackets, first round Friday night, you have to win Friday to continue Saturday, you place 8 remaining wrestlers. If you want do wrestle backs that's fine, In Indiana only the losers in semi's wrestle for 3rd. Finals Saturday evening at 6pm. Done by 9

Info on why we cant secure Rupp or Yum center.....not "they wont do it".

$5 a day to park. They are running every placement at the same time. Khsaa say that it's all about the kids. With every terrible decision it is only hurting the kids. Khsaa is all about the money. Every year it's something new that is ruining the experience for the kids and the fans!

So I will cost me 80 bucks for my wife and son to watch the tournament with me? Wow!

Every placement is not at same time as to my understanding. It kind of sounded that way and reads that way, but for the advisory committee members it will be 3-8, then 1-2.

So I have some questions for the advisory committee members.

1. What are the meetings with these "people" like every year?  Contentious, or tell you what you want to hear and then go out do whatever they want?

2.Why is it every year before state we get on this forum and find out crap that they've pulled?

3. What are the long term goals for wrestling from their perspective?  Venue discussions, tourney logistics, increasing the number of programs?

4. What, if any, leverage/input does the KHSCA or advisory committee have?

5. When is contract up with horse park?

6. Have their been any preliminary discussions WITH THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE regarding future venues?

I'm just tired of nothing positive ever happening with regard to the state tourney every year, for the last 6 years.  Frankfort finals party was discouraged/minimized the last year in Frankfort.  Horse park finals party first year was at least an attempt at recreating the Frankfort atmosphere.  Next year it was squashed and beach balls slashed by knives in a "douchie" manner. Last year it was the finals mat decision that was saved at the 11th hour.  Now this year it's the schedule, lack of a true finals, cost, parking, and again the crap venue.

Can we as a wrestling community do anything about any of the above and not leave it all on the shoulders of a few coaches left to bang their heads against the walls?

After attending OH and IN state tourneys I'm left very exasperated.  Sorry for the rant, just tired of being sick and tired.

Just seems as if they're trying to kill wrestling here. They should be ashamed of themselves for the terrible event they're putting together.. this is HORRIBLE for our state wrestling.. maybe before next year we petition for certain changes? Who knows

I don't think they are even going to do a face off.

It has always been a yearly event for me and my family to attend the finals.  Get down to Lexington/Frankfort, have a late lunch.  Then head over to watch the finals.  Spend 2.5 hours there and head on home.

Finals will now be a minimum of 5 hours!  You make the finals and you are the show after the placement matches.  Way to take away the spotlight.

Fireman-

its my understanding that no other venue even placed a bid in for the state tournament and the farm and tractor expo is at freedom hall. I also believe the contract is for 4 more years.

The parking fee is not going to Khsaa it is the horse park charging for it.

parade of champions starts at 915

I hate to suggest this but what about the fans boycotting the tournament?  The wrestlers and coaches would be there to compete but everyone else stay home, mom and dad too.  They know people will come anyway because there is no other choice so they do whatever they want.  Since the only thing they seem to care about is money maybe you have to hit them where it hurts.  This won't be a popular idea, in addition to the complications of organizing it, but maybe it would get real results.

I don't recall paying the Horse Park a parking fee during the KHSAA State Cross Country Meet last November which is held in the front yard of the AllTech Arena.

Parking fee must be a New Years resolution.

I would be curious to know what the average total per person, per KHSAA State Tournament event cost. The cost for parking and individual tickets for football, basketball, underwater basket weaving, etc. Seems like it would cost $35 for 1 single individual to buy 1 all session ticket and park for 2 days for the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament.

And no, they didn't charge anything for parking at state XC -- though parking this year was a nightmare because of all the work they had going on during the summer and fall. The grass lots where I parked were nothing but a quagmire.

With Elementary State changing Venues I guess they thought milking the HS fans more  will make up the deficit for this dust filled unhealthy atmosphere.  Great to know who the advisory members are, but how Much  does the KHSAA value  the Advisory Members input?  I know I am going to get slammed,  but there is not a single female on this board, nor a  delegate representing the fans. What is best for the kids , yeah right.

Also there was not a Conflict of dates with the Farm Machinery Show this year or next.

KHSAA needs to attend the spring coaches meeting to get this crap ironed out

I can tell you, to attend the baseball state tourney, I paid over $100 last year.  3 games, concessions, and parking over the 3 days.  And I didn't attend the finals game.  Really, $25 for a 2 day pass, + $10 for parking doesn't seem too bad.  Really, it's pretty much in line with what you'd pay for any state finals event, if not less.  Same with concessions.  I get it, it's not cheap, and it's not gourmet food, but you are going to pay those types of prices with the same quality regardless of the venue.
