What would you give to have these state finals?

I watched that match last night, amazing! The match, the crowd, the atmosphere was out of this world.
Indiana pulls out the stops every year for finals, I wish ours was on different weekend missing going to them. you can watch them all from faceoff to final match at ihsaatv.org
Though on a much smaller scale, the Civic Center had this type of environment during the finals. Much of the set-up during those years was modeled after the IHSAA format.
yep this was similar to the finals in Frankfort. Not as many people but the lighting, mat placement and excitment was identical.
IN KY you would get Booed for running of the mat and jumping on the wall before shaking your opponents hands ,of course in KY coaches can get away with not shaking a kids hands so it's hard to say .
I WOULD NOT WANT THAT KIND OF FINALS AT ALL.
LOL THIS THREAD MAKES NO SENSE THAT'S A BIG ARENA LIKE ALL TECH NOT SOME RINKY DINK HIGH SCHOOL GYM ,That's Chad Red not your ordinary state champ .If you want a finals like that you have to be in an Arena like that with lights and numbers there watching and have a wrestler on that level with that much hype and that may be impossible lol,Has nothing to do with KY wrestling whatsoever or the state wrestling championships situation .
I thought we had finals like that in Frankfort , with lights out and single mat lit up .
I'd say all Nicks matches this year where leading up to state , not sure he wrestled a match during the season .
I agree with Wrist Control, 8798, and Wky. It has been a complete letdown when it switched to the Barn. The Dungeon had this similar feeling, lighting, introductions, one mat and cheering NOT muffled by dirt.
385 were you referring to the way the finals were held or to this match?
2 hours ago, PinAndWin said:Red is good but Nick Lee is equally good. Had him on the ropes but couldn't hold on.
Nick is a class act too . I'd be surprised if he acted any different had he won . I've also seen him get the best of Red in a practice room . Nothing to loose there but still did it.
Did they not wrestle at the Mater Dei Holiday Classic? I think Keegan Duncan lost to Red in the finals.

Well both really. The whole video was impressive. The way the finals were held in the video was awesome (single mat, center stage, spotlight, crowd, intensity)
But it's true that kind of intensity doesn't come from a match other than a top national level match. I'm just saying imagine if we in Ky had another 220 last year that was also top 10 nationally and undefeated and had a real chance to beat Austin Myers. That would be amazing for all parties included. Before I get flamed; I only use Austin's name because he was the best in the nation last year and from our state, like Chad Red in the video.

No. Lee was injured all year and did not wrestle before the state series started except for 3 matches at the state duels tournament

I agree with you on what Chad did, should of shaked Nicks hand first, but like you said hes not your ordinary state champ, 3rd person to finish Undefeated in Indiana, Lee was a huge match on a National scale, not state. #1 .vs #7 in the nation. The school support at the finals is nuts, I think Mater Dei bring the whole west side of Evansville to Indy.
But honestly what do you not like about the finals of that Caliber?
You are correct its held in a big arena that has all the lighting you want that costs big money. Sponsors are big help in Indiana wrestling. That is what we need, KHSAA to ask company's to help. Why cant we secure Rupp or Yum center? It don't cost more than Conseco Fieldhouse.
Its not just Indiana that has a big finals setup, Washington state has there finals in the Tacoma Dome.
I think a finals like this brings the fans (as you can see), gives the youth wrestlers to something to strive for. Build it and they will come!
Wrestling is second to Soccer in youth participation and we need to capitalize on that. There is no wrestling in South Central Kentucky, how huge of a boost for the sport if you got Bowling Green, Warren Central, Warren East, Greenwood, South Warren on board? Those are huge School systems in one County not to mention pick up Glasgow area schools.
Our biggest goal should be to spread the interest in this great sport so it grows in Ky, then you should have no problem getting the finals these kids deserve.
MY POINT WAS ,People are talking about having the state tournament in a smaller High School venue like back when , My point for the last few years is exactly what this post is trying to say KY should have a big venue like at All Tech that is the type of arena showed in This video at least size wise ,As for lighting and championship matches that can all be arranged whereever it is held as long as it's big and modern .NOT SOME HIGH SCHOOL GYM nicknamed the dungeon .Like I said in another post if I'm a college recruiter I want to see a match with a lot of fans and hype like Reds match in a facility like that one ,NOT a High School gym!
NOT MANY KIDS GET THE HYPE RED GETS A BIT MORE TO IT THAN EVEN BEING RANKED HE HIS COACHES AND USUALLY EVERYTHING TO DO WITH HIM GET UBER HYPE GOOD AND BAD ,RED IS A GOOD KID BUT THOSE AROUND HIM USUALLY DRAW AS MUCH HYPE GOOD AND BAD ,THE THINGS HIS COACH?DOES IN INDIANA WOULD BE TOLERATED BY FEW IN ANY STATE LOL JUDGE GOOD FROM THE VIDEO AND I DO NOT KNOW LEE AT ALL ,AND WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING IT WAS PRO BABY LIKE HAVING AN ANGEL VASQUEZ AND AN AJ BINDNER MATCH ONLY WITH 2 TOP TEN NATIONAL GUYS .
As for shaking hands and being state 3rd or 1st undefeated you should still be held to the same standards and not bea self promoting disrespectful showboat "I like Red and so does my son by the way so I'm not totally knocking him his thing is his thing and works for them and people enjoy it's good for the sport"
Brock was this states first 5 X Champ Austin the state and Countrys first 4 X and or undefeated 220 .Neither would have or did act that way both shook their opponents hands and celebrated but not to the point of degrading their opponent or breaking rules on their big win day .IF there were the same numbers as in that video in all tech with the same mat and light set up like there could be at All tech you would have a similar match with 2 high level high profile wrestlers ,I have never seem the dungeon but I assume it's a high school room maybe similar to am iron man feel that's nothing like how a state championship venue should be .
Lights out ,single mat , it doesn't have to be the #1 kid in the. country to make the atmosphere . Frankfort Convention Center .
I agree no high school gym. Altech is fine, they need to request to put up center mat lights and spots lights, could be utilized in the equine events. Altech is rough, we just need to polish the diamond in the rough.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you just didn't know about the Civic Center. It is not a high school gym. And we are certainly not at a place where we can replicate the finals of Indiana with over ten thousand spectators watching. And the match in this thread was certainly hyped. I think that what most people are saying is that this kind of setup is what was used back when the finals were in Frankfort, as I mentioned earlier, on a much smaller scale. People were talking about the pageantry of the finals in Frankfort, not necessarily wanting to go back to that venue. It can be replicated in a larger arena, but as many have said in other threads, we took a step backwards this year with the setup.
So everyone pretty much agrees whether it's at all tech or not it has to be a big modern nice facility and the set /Lighting and championship finals needs to be done up right ,
NO HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL GYM.

yes nature boy doesn't know what he's talking about he's never been to the Civic Center and has no idea what the layout, the finals setup and the intensity of that arena was like. but that's not gonna stop him from telling everyone how wrong they are.
WKY i was aware of Nick's injuries. Sucks hes been struggling the last few years. Hope it doesn't carry into his college career. They don't come any better than the Lee's. Great family.
Been told by a few in town that the layout in the Civic Center has changed and would not facilitate us anymore. I have never been to Civic Center, so I couldn't tell you if we could still use it or what it use to be.
Regardless the sport needs sponsors like Ky Farm Bureau and such to help us grow.

Let's get something straight ,I never said anything about any civic center ,I have only spoken about not having it in a High School gym and I'm always the first to say what I know about or do not know about as far as having a tournament like Indys or the finals in the video you need 2 top kids a ton of fans a nice light set up and a build up to that finals match .NONE OF WICH YOU HAVE IN KY NOR COULD YOU HAVE HAD THIS YEAR SO THE VIDEO AND POST ARE POINTLESS.
Unlike you "and this is a fact "who has no where near the experience I do in promotions or putting on or being in large scale events !! I do not post what people know or do not know unless I'm FAIRLY sure of their knowledge ,My kids have wrestled in that arena in the video and In a lot of gyms arena across the nation , I have worked at and been in arenas in events and shows of all sorts and it doesn't take a genius to know there are not any high school gums IN the state worthy of a state championship .And obviously no one smart enough to solve the problem of putting on a decent tournament in an actually decent Arena that you already have minus the dirt or dust .A bunch of idiots cannot have decent medals decent lighting or even put on a normal finals procedure that 100s of tournaments have each year across the country .The problem isn't the arena it's a bunch of Dumb$@B running it and it gets old reading about some other dumb $@bs cackle about it or the good old days every year .
for history's sake, Atherton is a high school in Louisville, where state was held every year in the 70's.even though Atherton had no wrestling team at all! The Civic Center in Frankfort ( also called the Dungeon) is a larger venue with a lot more atmosphere than the high school. I do not know what year they switched from Atherton to Frankfort, but Frankfort became too small when they went to the 32 man brackets from the 16.

94-95 season was the last at Atherton
Oddly enough it was a weird yr that they changed weight classes and only used them 1 yr
With Union Winning it at Altech this year only Campbell and Union has won it at Atherton, Civic Center and Alltech.
Only other team to win at 3 sites would be North Hardin. Westport 1968, Trinity 1969, and Atherton 1978,1981
To put it into some perspective..Not that it matters, because it's not happening.
Only picture I could find from "The Dungeon" that shows a wrestling setup. Only space for four mats.
I think we might still be there wrestling now from last week if we only had four mats.
That's certainly better than most if not any High School gym But not as big as all tech or the Arena or most states have their championships in .Four mats would stink but in that arena 1 mat put in the center for finals would be cool .
There was always a packed house at the Civic Center(Dungeon). It was full of life and it didn't matter it you had nationally ranked kids wrestling or not. Everyone picked some one and cheered for them. I have to say one of the most exciting matches wrestled there was when Travis Sullivan lost the finals his senior year. That place went wild. Nature Boy only has Alltech to compare state tournaments with. There has to be some way to make finals as special as they use to be. I don't think they have a spotlight to use at Alltech at all. Maybe someone can remember from the first year at the Horse Park if they tired to use one or not.

Fern Creek won 3 titles. 1975, 1984 and 2015
Never mind. it would help if I actually read your comment.

"NATURE BOY ONLY HAS ALLTECH TO COMPARE STATE TOURNAMENTS WITH"
Kind of funny considering the whole thread is based on an Indiana finals match in comparison to Kentucky and my son's won youth and Jr high state titles in 3 organizations in Ohio youth titles in ky and my oldest came in 3rd as a fresh at the SCHOTT in Ohio in a class tougher than any ever in indy or ky and then Won in the SCHOTT as soph going undefeated all year .
I been to a few tournaments in my day lol.
IF THE NATURE BOY WAS IN CHARGE THIS IS WHERE THE TOURNAMENT WOULD BE .
NO DOUBT ABOUT IT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER ,THE LOCATION THE HISTORY AND THE NAME ,I WOULD BRING IN SPECIAL REFS FOR FINALS TO WORK WITH KYS OWN REFS .like THE STEINER BROS ,lights smoke music fireworks ,No tournament in the country at any level would touch it .Real medals Real brackets ,As for parking and tickets no one could complain because you get what you pay for .
I would make Vince McMahon look like some grade school girl selling lemonade on the sidewalk .
Every Team would be able to step it up like Woodford as far as pep and the tournament would become the talk of the state sport wise ?participation would double in short time and The Nature Boy would bring in Guests from the sporting world with ties to Wrestling to speak with fans and wrestlets and commentate along with former ky coaches ,sponsors would pour in .
This is fun ,But I'm serious as a heart attack .I could put on the best tournament in the country at AllTech with a little support .Few people ever think outside the box and when so limited you often settle for less and less.
I sent a kid on a tour of the country last yr few and none last yr anywhere came close to doing as far as wrestling goes because he and I were not afraid to try .
Most of the problems with the tournament is people are scared and too lazy to try and change anything .
I liked the tournament it wasn't so bad till the party poopers came and it went backwards this year a few steps .I would be sure some people got canned for not filming the tournament that's simply insane .
I was at the game this week. I was sitting there thinking "what a great place to have a state tournament"
Yep that's where it should be no doubt about it no matter what .
We could probably even get the cheerleaders for the fans !!!
Woodford County is only about 20 miles from the Horse Park. Those kids could come over Friday right after school, sleep in their own beds and get up at a normal time on Saturday. They did not start their travels already an hour behind like the Western part of the State. Also not all towns have nice 4 lane or more roads, and many parents do not want their inexperienced kids driving that far. Considering to make it by first match on Saturday some kids would have had to have left at 430 a.m. c.s.t. And I know that there are parents that did not want their kids traveling home after finals were over. Maybe one of the reasons Rupp has been out is that yes UK Men's Basketball is priority. Yet maybe if Our State Finals could rotate between other big (DIRTLESS) arenas, say Louisville Convention Center, WKU Arena. That way maybe more kids and schools could come when the travel distance is more manageable. Just an idea.
I am and always will be die hard Big Blue Nation. But guys, Rupp ain't got nothing on the Yum.
Seriously I give a school props for pep and someone tries to down their efforts ,that's sad ,
Did you not notice the BLONDE on most of Em it's more than being close to the horse park !A lot of schools are close Newsflash it's state , people should plan on it from the first whistle I was told about Woodfords rowdy fans way before I ever saw them at State .Union has a great support fan base as well but if I'm in a trench I would like Woodfords style of cheering me on , a lot of schools have good fans but not the same rowdiness.
here is how the powers that be do the basketball finals at Rupp. If they can do this for basketball, why can't they figure out how to make wrestling a memorable experience.

There can NEVER be anything like that in All-Tech. It is a facility for Horses, not people. Wasn't there a kid last year that could not compete at State due to Horse Allergies. Correct me if I am wrong but they do use spotlights on the Horses? We had pageantry at Frankfort, tried to continue some traditions at All-Tech but those got Knifed. It seems instead of adding to the finals more things keep getting taken away. Only thing constant is the DIRT in the stands and air.
Nothing wrong with a kid having fun probably should have shook Lee's hand first if you don't like the celebration stop it from happening "Don't lose"

HALL WON WITH CLASS ,
NOT MUCH ANYONE CAN SAY ABOUT YOUR QUOTE OTHER THAN I DONT KNOW YOU AND CAN TELL YOU ,You never lived up to your own standards .Neither did Red or few others .
I will have to agree with Nature Boy. Brock Ervin won with class. Austin Myers is kentucky's Mark Hall and he went out with class as well.

The Civic Center has been redone. There is no way you can get 4 mats in there now.

No matter what the kids deserve to know that being in the State Finals is a special moment and are given the respect other Winter Sports are.

"If you dont like what i do when i score.. Dont let me score "
Most of america loves cam newton. He is great with children and an inspiration to many. (my favorite) he has a dance after every touch down. But at the end of the day is a good dude. If i celebrate its for 1 of 2 reasons. 1 it was a big win and i respect the opponent that i have beaten by showing my excitement. Or 2. You pissed me off in someway and im going to let you know where that got you. If cam newton dabs after a touchdown, i damn sure can dab after a big match
What do you call that Dance he did in the backfield when The Denver D Was Sacking him .
Manning didn't dance he just smiled and let those around him enjoy.
See now I'm confused how can you say you loved the way AJ took the bad boy role this year with swagger yet say a little celebration is bad. I think as long as you are respectful to your opponent and shake hands there is nothing wrong with having fun. I also think there is nothing wrong with going out and taking it to a kid when the entire arena just booed your brother and cheered him being upset in the state finals.
Not at all one of my best friends played for them Shane Curry,He was one of their best ever but very humble a great Human Being .
Point with Newton he came out looking scared at super bowl he was disgraceful ,he played without any confidence yet hoped around and show boated when he was on top in other games .
If you talk the talk walk the walk ,
I was always quiet like my son's for the most part when I competed but inside I was f t w I train my but off no time to showboat focus and win that's where it's at .I'm a gd lion and I'm going to eat .and if you get in my way or my son's way we will devour you lol.
.MY FRIEND PLAYED FOR THE CANES BROKE HIS HEART WHEN NOTRE DAME BROKE THEIR STREAK HE TOLD ME ALL SUMMER THAT YEAR WATCH US PLAY ND I'm going to get those sobs and he did .His father was a Deacon we worked together every summer he made ND look stupid that next yr they couldn't stop him I was very proud of him but more so because he was the most humble person I ever met even being surrounded by the Miami mob mentality .
The showboating is completely unnecessary. My biggest problem with Cam is how he acted afterwards. He should have paid attention to his own commercial and found a Band-Aid for his feelings instead of pouting at press conferences and taking subtle jabs at a QB that had a career 10X better than he will have. If you crave attention, you don't get to be surprised that there will be plenty of negative attention to go with it. Just own it afterwards like Conor Mcgregor. I have no issue with that. Everyone is different and show emotion differently, but when it disrespects the game and the opponent you went too far. My favorite athlete of all time never once spiked the ball or danced or celebrated in any way. Barry Sanders just handed the ball back to the ref because he always wanted to act like he'd been in the endzone before, just like in this case where Redd could've acted like his hand had been raised before.
All the talk and hype before and after are part of it for some not others .My son's never talked any smack at all about their opponents or what they were going to do ,If you asked them could they beat someone they would say yes ,never no no matter who it was not a big I'm gonna destroy them or I'm this and that ,if it was someone way out of their league they would probably look at you dumb or something if they were someone they couldn't beat or didn't know they would say they will beat Em .
They left the bs smack talk up to the dummies on forums like me and the goofs I argue with .
If a guy got dirty or was a punk they would return the kindness that's how they were taught and raised .they never once ran off the mat before shaking hands and rarely over celebrated .Or flashed some signs like some kids.always shook hands even though I saw some coaches at state get away without shaking Stephens hand one year in ky after a match and no one make a fuss .I saw Austin rub it in the face of a hostile crowd like no one in HS I have ever seen and get amped after beating a 3 X national champ avenging his only real loss in Folk style High School wrestling saw him pin a kid in 9 seconds and help him up and pat him on the back turn to his fans and make that get up gesture because one of his teammates just lost and it doomed his teams chances yet he wanted them to remain positive .
There are all kinds of situations .
I Saw AJ win a state title shake hands like he should and we'll he could have flipped of a booing crowd but didn't .Also saw him get pinned in the year before he shook hands the same way and prepared and went at it the same way.Thats not how Cam Newton acted Nor Red but Red acts the same all the time it's what he does if he wrestles someone good he still goes for it .
A wrestler shouldn't pay attention to any hype or any crowd and should be true to his nature for the most part .And if you Talk the Talk walk the Walk .just show up do your best shake hands no need to be a punk or exclaim your great friendship for any comp because if your blowing kisses to each other like some of these guys do after a match one or both of you haven't worked hard enough .Human nature does not allow someone who has trained their whole life and suffered to be happy for the guy who just kicked their but and if you show boat or talk crap expect people to boo you because everyone is looking for Mr perfect and most strive to be that.
HONESTLY I think AJ got in a bunch of kids heads with all the hype and regardless of what he takes credit for or denies every single person who knows anything about the situation who has an inkling of competitive oneupsmanship knows it's what he wanted .Some times it works other times it doesn't I don't think it worked on Angel their match was to tight and Angel was an iceman it was a true great match between two studs who approach the sport differently .Another thing to think about is if a kid is not training his hardest and knows it he is more susceptible to falling prey to hype even if it's not aimed at him and most kids know they are not doing all they can do they are not 100 percent their minds are open to lose before they step on the mat.If I know I'm out training Everyone I have no fear whatsoever of losing or at least of smack talk I try to tell and instill that in all my family and friends it's the best advise .I have never seen a kid train as much as an Austin in all aspects of the sport some may have spent more time on a mat or wrestled harder in a room I doubt any anywhere spent the time all around training wrestling lifting jogging sprinting running bleachers eating his protein shakes and and the whole deal he was never scared of anyone loses hurt worse but the revenge win was always possible because work will pay off .
I know I drifted and rambled just enjoy the whole subject .
So I'm going to say some stuff that may make people mad of course I do not care lol .If Erdman had trained like he could have and should have no one would be talking about AJ over Angel or who should have gotten the OW it's true at least that's what I think .But you have to do the work and AJ Did and he won and he should have been OW .
On another note if Erdman trains in college like he did for state we will never hear his name again .And if AJ wants to hear his name again he better keep doing what he's doing and maybe more because now he will be a target .Everyone wants a shot at the champ but a champ in any state who isn't taking out champs from other states left and right will just be a less than average Joe outside of High School .
Can't forget best of luck to Angel I know I seem to ignore him but to his credit he was the man to beat.
I think so and I think you will do fine in college just keep at it and never settle for doing what everyone else is always do more and do more outside the box ,it's not just what your doing in the wrestling room or with the team at least half of it is up to you alone diet nutrition. Weight training extra stuff specialized training drilling ,If you want to win you can at any level at almost any weight .You have to love a challenge ,Sad and awesome at the same time I think of my son a 5 ,10 1/2 ,5.11,Heavyweight coming up from 220 to wrestle 6 foot plus guys at or close to 285 .That's a challenge and requires even more work and thought into being successful ,At least if your 197 or below you have a range or smaller range of size and styles of opponents .Anyway some kids will become complacent and fade some will face injuries and some may hit a wall as far as potential and ability goes either way I like to believe hard work will pay off no matter what and some level of accomplishment can be achieved by ANYONE.
