Indiana's Dual State tournament is almost a different animal that our individual state. The weight classes are 40-45-50-55-60-65-70-75-80-85-90-95-105-115-130-150-HWT. (175 max) They get a .9 allowance so 40.9 can wrestle the 40 lbs. class and so forth. And it is K-6th grade. So it favors those who have small kids for their age. I think ours has been going for about 6 years or so. They started with about 8 teams I think. They had 20 teams for the first time last year. Maybe put some huge trophies on the line? The "wild card" rule helps teams fill their empty spots too.
You are probably right in that the Madison block weights used for your individual tournaments may contribute to the lack of duals teams. Not all clubs in Indiana do team duals but that is changing. Many clubs start in November and are wrestling duals from the end of November-January 10th (Elem Team State). Then the individual tournaments start up heavy until individual Folkstyle state in March.
We have wrestled a few teams from Kentucky last year. Union County was a very good team that traveled about 3 1/2 hours for a dual. I'm surprised that you guys could only get four teams. You have to start somewhere though. On another note, Floyd Central (Floyds Knobs, IN) had a dual called Kentuckiana Duals. It was a lot of fun for everyone. They would like to see some competitive teams from Kentucky and Indiana wrestle one another.
I think the duals are great because it really brings the team aspect of wrestling to the forefront. Sometimes, a kid can lose but not get pinned and still help win the dual for the team. Also, seeing all of the kids lined up cheering for their teammates is a wonderful sight!
