2018-19 KYWCA Girls State Championship

Topic ID: 14619 | 57 Posts

We at the KYWCA are proud to announce that this season we will have the first ever in season girls state championship!

This event will be held February 2nd at Tates Creek High School in Lexington.

More details will follow, but here are so details.

• Grades 7-12 Female

• 14 weight classes (same as hs)

• 4,8,16 bracket as needed

• top 4 medal

• top 2 team trophies

* all entries must be weight assessed and trackwrestling weigh in sheet will be required, same as any hs event.

This is such a great thing. A very big step from last year to this. So many coaches that embraced this great occurrence. I can't even put it all in words. You guys that were a part of this, I salute all of you!. Thank you all!!!

Thanks to all the coaches for working hard for this. We are blessed with amazing support here in Kentucky. From our amazing USA wrestling backing (and we are excited for that triple crown award!) getting us to Tulsa and Fargo to the coaches hosting the first state event during high school season, we have an awesome foundation.

For all of the new parents and coaches head on over to Kentucky Female Wrestling on Facebook and join the conversation!

Much love and gratitude to you all.

Awesome news. I hope it is freestyle, since this is the style these young athlete's move on to wrestle in college.

This will sadly be a very small and quick  tournament.

Sanctioning body?

This is a KHSAA in season event sponsored by the coaches association.

It follows all rules as a high school event.

We are working with KHSAA and hopeful that after a couple years and size grows, they will takeover , with womens wrestling becoming it's own sanctioned sport.

High school girls wrestling is folkstyle across the nation.  That is the optimal solution for growth and development at this time (even though everyone including the top people would love to see freestyle be the actual style)

Starting small is how things start.  Baby steps until you can walk, then you can run.  I'm grateful and excited about the progress we are making and I'm grateful to those who are working so hard to be positive and make things happen.  Increasing opportunities for women is never a bad thing.

Most of these girls are going to be coached by high school boys coaches. I think the only way girls wrestling would be freestyle is if high school boys change also. I don't see this happening anytime soon.

That is one of the biggest reasons for staying folkstyle at this time during development :) another is that it is already sanctioned under NFHS so no new paperwork is needed for that part of it.  In my experience the girls transition easily enough so its less of an issue than it seems like it might be

I've had some questions,  so wanted to make sure I let people know a few things.

This is considered a regular season high school khsaa event. Because of this, all wrestlers MUST be weight assessed and on high school roster for the school they attend or the m.s. that feeds that high school.

As an example,  if you have an 8th grade girl who lives in one county, but wrestles in a different county for a m.s. club, that wrestler is not eligible for this event.

I'll use my team as an example.  My wrestlers will have to be from southern Ms, tates creek Ms, or tates creek high school. If I have a girl from another school on my m.s. club, she will not be able to be on my h.s. roster, therefore is not eligible to wrestle in a khsaa event.

Can Taylor County host a girls tournament concurrently with a boys tournament? We are interested in hosting a girls tournament prior to them going to the state tournament.

I am taking my girls to Rossview (TN) tourney on Monday Jan. 21st. They have a JV/girls tourney. It would have to be used as a varsity date since it is in TN and girls is sanctioned. If you want info PM me.

Any idea on an increase in women's numbers across the state?  Any schools having luck recruiting?

From what I hear there are several teams with multiple girls out which is super exciting!  I can't wait until the body fat test numbers come in :)

Can you email me a flyer so I can post it on the KY girls facebook page? [email protected] :)

I'm curious how the girls tournament will work in regards to KHSAA rules? Who will it be open to?

All khsaa hs rules. Oprn to 7th-12th grade girls who are on high school roster and have been weight assessed,  just like any other hs tournament.

TCHS will be hosting an individual tournament for boys and girls that will run concurrently. The boys tournament is full at this point. I have attached the flyer. My best guess right now (which is still fairly early), we will have approximately 20 girls coming to compete. Hopefully more. We will have 5 mats and depending on the girls participation, we will have 3 mats for the boys and 2 mats for the girls. That’s the goal, anyway. This tournament will double as a food drive for our local food bank to help them replenish after the holiday season. Hope to see you all there!

We are attempting to add female only brackets to the Harrison Co Invitational on 12/1/18.  We currently have some girls practicing with us and would like to be able to get them some matches against other girls.  We will do whatever we can to get them as many matches as possible on 12/1.  Could be robin round or bracket.  There won’t be an entry fee for girls, and if we don’t have enough for a girls only bracket we can do exhibition against boys or put them in the boys brackets if they want.

Thanks,

Not to be a party pooper but isn't that the same date as Middle school state and JV state?

It may make it difficult for some schools to come up with 3 coaches going 3 different places. And I would hate to guess which would be left out if so.

We will have 1 coach at each event. It is what it is. Not ideal, but a good issue to have.

I really hope it all works out, but I'm sure there are a few schools out there that will not have 3 coaches to send to 3 different events, possibly 4 if they are at state duals.

But I understand there has to be small steps.

state duals are the week prior of girls, middle school and JV state.

Sorry I'm old and get that sometimers disease at times lol.

lol all good.

This decision alone, was enough to get my daughter excited about wrestling again! I have already noticed the female numbers are up in Middle School... I really Belive this is a good thing.. Glad we did it. Thanks for doing this.  #AWESOME #KENTUCKY #WRESTLING...

Are we requiring the ladies to still have a combination of four weigh ins/matches before the girls state tournament?

I would think that it is still considered a regular season event since it is not a KHSAA sponsered post season event. Therefore the 4 match rule does not apply, but the body fat test would be needed, just like a regular event.

I am. Even if they do not need it. It helps keep them consistent with the guys IMO.

Correct!

With numbers exploding,  we may have to look at a qualifier in the future and if/when khsaa takes over, i would say there will be a minimum

There was confusion on my part with the vote on the 4 match/weigh in qualification.  It is NOT required and all girls that are weight assessed and in trackwrestling will be eligible to wrestle at girls state. Sorry for any confusion and here is an updated flyer.

Again, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Some questions have been asked if this will be high school girls only. Does anyone know the age groups for the girls side?

Yes. We will have girls’ and boys tournaments running concurrently.

I hope the people  behind this were smart enough to make girls state an OPEN tournament.  Even OHIO has made their girls state open. Great opportunity for ky girls who can step up to the challenge.

The "people" behind this are the KYWCA. That's the wrestling coaches association if you are not familiar with it. I assure you that they are "smart enough" to do the correct things and make this an event to showcase our female wrestlers and help build wrestling as a whole.

As far as "open" , do you mean to open to other states? This is the "Kentucky" girls championships.  This tournament is to promote growth in our state(which it has, we have went from 50 girls to 150 in 1 year) and award our girls for their achievements.

If you are meaning "open" as far as open to any girl to be able to participate,  that's not an option. This is a regular season high school tournament that must follow the rules of any other khsaa event. That is why it is 7th-12th grades and girls must be on hs roster, weight assessed, and weigh in using the proper trackwrestling form. We are mirroring our boys and following all khsaa rules with the hopes that it will make it a smooth transition with growth and the end results of khsaa sanctioned girls division.

KYWCA . Ok that's awesome. I'm sure you are correct they are smart enough.  My concerns are why hold this event the same day as MS state? Why make the best girls in the state choose which event to participate in.  Why not open this event to all states to really grow the numbers and competition level.  This could be a great opportunity for girls wrestling.

So this date was chosen because more than half of the high school teams in the state do not compete on this date. It gives the high school coaches the opportunity to focus on their girls and take them to this event. While m.s. girls are eligible,  the event is a high school tournament.  While this date makes m.s. girls choose,  it is the best date for the majority of our female wrestlers.

As far as out of state wrestlers,  we are wanting to promote and show case KY Girls. We are trying to build our girls and by bringing in ones from out of state, it could be discouraging to the ones here working hard to be the best in their state. There are opportunities for them to travel nationally and compete against other states, but this is their time to shine against their peers from Kentucky.

Think about it this way, this event is much like state duals. The KYWCA runs it and it is considered a state title. But would we let teams from ohio come compete in our state duals?

Hope this helps clarify issues and best of luck in the rest of the season.

10-4

Can the girls have more than 1 from a team in a weight class? I noticed Central has 4 at 195.

yes. 1 point scorer. That's been my understanding.

Multiple girls allowed per weight, but 1 scorer. I will update flyer to reflect this info

Bracket Boards have been ordered, so Champion at each weight will receive that along with their medal!

That's fantastic!  Good job to all the coaches and wrestlers!!

Always nice to see our sport grow!

I just want to say what a great tournament this was, especially for the first time. Other than what I thought were unnecessary breaks/delays it was ran pretty good. But what really made it a great tournament was those young women wrestled like dogs!!! There were more competitive matches than I expected and everyone who participated and took the time to make sure these ladies were able to compete should be very proud. There was a man standing outside when I stepped out to get some fresh air and he had a big grin and said "this is the best tournament I've been to in quite some time, man are these girls fun to watch" ... I couldn't agree more. My experience might be helped by the fact that I got to see my daughter become a State champ and you couldn't tell her that it wasnt legit. Just like the boys getting ready to compete in less than 2 weeks, these young women trained hard and battled like they deserved to be there and I hope the next step is for KHSAA to step in and make this an official State tournament. While I think it's fine they wrestle on the Varsity or JV teams with the boys during the season, my daughter held her own against them too, this is a great thing to reward and let them showcase how hard they work and get ready for the next level, college, Olympics,  etc.. keep bringing it Kentucky!!

Glad you had a good experience.  As far as the breaks, they were necessary.  The breaks we took were for the 45 min rules and the last was to break down the 2nd mat for the finals. Normally i can push the 45 min rule a bit, but if we had not took a break one time, girls wrestling would have only had 20 mins between matches. I hope this helps the understanding of the breaks.

I understood the meaning behind the breaks. I felt only the one was close and necessary but not sure about the others, either way, it did not ruin it for me and we had a great time. I just know how my wrestlers are and long breaks between wrestling can have just as much negative effect as not enough time. Again, thank you for doing it and putting in the work. Overall I thought you guys did great, please dont take my criticism as a "slam", it was my only little thought and not too big a deal. I've been to waaaaay worse. Ridiculously worse. I give you guys an A grade ;)

Didnt take it as a slam, just wanted to explain. Thanks and congratulations to Savannah. Great showing by all the girls!

Funny thing i noticed about Saturday.  Female wrestlers dont bug you nearly as bad as boys about what mat they will be on! They must listen better than boys.

I can't thank Shirley Stephens enough for her help and getting the Cumberland Womens team to help. They do an excellent job on the tables

Great job Teater! Looking forward to seeing the growth from year 1 to year 2! I am rly looking forward to it!
