Being the history and statistical nerd that I am I thought that it would be interesting to research some wrestling family history. 

I started with the Ervin's This is what I found. 

*16 Ervins have participated in the Ky state tourney. 

*14 Ervins have placed in the Ky state tourney.

*12 Ervins were state finalists. 

* 12 Ervins were Ky state Champions. 

*Placements: (1) 8th, (3) 7th, (3) 6th, (1) 5th, (1) 4th, (8) 3rd, (4) 2nd,

*With a staggering 13 different state champions. 

* That makes 34 placements by Ervin's 

*23 State Championships in All. 

* (3) 2X state champions

*(2) 3X state champions

* With one 5X state champion. 

*All with Union Co. (unless I missed one)

The first Ervin I found was in 1975 (There were 2 but I don' t know their first names. 

What other families would be next to research. 

Other interesting info. 

Since 1975 (45) years. There has been at least one Ervin at the state tourney in all but 16 of those years.  (78,79),(83,84),(86,87,88,89),(95,96,97,98,99,00,01,02) 

In 08 there were 4 Ervins at the state Tourney. all 4 placing (1st,3rd,7th,2nd)

The numbers get even wilder when you throw in a few more grandkids. Cole Sherman and Connor Sherman are the only ones I can think of right now.

Weddings in Indiana

I don’t know of any family dynasties that are as prolific as the Ervin’s but there is the Walls family of Union and Caldwell and all of the Christian County families such as the Leavell’s 

I've thought about the Merritts of Hoptown, the Stepps of Sheldon Clark and the Coopers of Simon Kenton.

I think  family dynasty would have to span at least into a 2nd generation or participate in 3 different decades(ie 80,90,10), and have at least 4 members. 

The Walls dynasty fits this criteria. 

There were 9 different Walls qualifying for the state tourney.

Coopers of SK don't qualify missed it by one year (from 00-13), but have 7 different qualifiers and 11 state titles. And 22 placements. 

Gary Ervin was first Ervin in 75. Father to Luke and Gabe.

Tim Ervin was his younger brother.

Anthony Harris State Runner-up 73, State Champion 74, is their Uncle. 

Anthony Smith and Damien Leavel are cousins and Anthony Smith and Grady Peterson are brothers so those placements and championships could be added as well.

You could include the Herrings/Ennels/Pinner family from Hopkinville. All are brothers or cousins.

Definitely the Carr family. 

I’m pretty sure the Coopers qualify regardless of the criteria .....

Yeah I knew I would get something like this.  Your making my head spin. LOL

I think you would have to have a direct relationship to the family in question to be added. So I am not sure if Peterson can be added to the Leavel through Smith. 

Harris may not have a direct bloodline link.

There are 2 different sets of Carr's in Union that have been champs. Neither is related to the Carr's of Woodford.

Woodford Carr's only have 2

Union Carr's Aaron and Adam are related.  Not to Jayce.  Payne not sure which. Regardless would not meet criteria.

looked at the bracket unless it is wrong he was 3rd in 73. lost in quarters to state runner up.

Woodford

There are only 2 Carr's from Woodford in KY history.

Jr's nephew is wrestling for Frederick Douglass,  Maurice Murphy. Be interesting to see how he does. Think he was a freshman this year.

I mention this every so often.

I am in the process of gathering all the state information from 1964 to present. I have complete brackets from 1971 to present.  I have partial brackets of 64-70. 

I have cataloged all state qualifiers and their placement by team.  If you have partial or complete brackets in those that I don't have complete I would be grateful for a copy.  If any coach would like their teams history I can send it to you.  

I have all that KHSAA has and gave all my info to Julian about 10 years ago.  I'm not confident that they are keeping it up to date so I am taking it on myself to do so.
