Can anyone confirm this?

I have heard it will be in Pikeville but do not understand why they would not have it more centrally located. I have several kids that are looking forward to attending but if it is in Pikeville we won't be going. That is more than a 5 hour drive from where we are. Disappointing to say the least.
Sounds to me that there needs to be regional meetings so that all can attend. Many youth an middle school programs are coached by volunteers, usually parents. When they are asked to attend meetings hours away many will not attend.
Would it be so hard to have a regional meeting then take votes at these meetings then a representative from each region attend a state meeting for the final tally? Then have another regional meeting to discuss the outcome of the state meeting. and so on.
Yeah yeah yeah I know "if you want your voice heard and your team to be heard attend the meeting". But as I said most are volunteer parents who ultimately only care about the program until their kid is in high school. You can't expect the high school coaches to do it all, which is who is really most interested in improving the program.

I cant find anywhere on the link where it states the State Tournament will be in Pikeville and haven't seen any emails sent via the email group. Am I missing it somewhere?

I can make it there from my house in Maryland quicker than @DrBaker can from Ervinland. That is unfortunate. Guess we should have HS state in Murray to counteract this.
The funny part about all of this is that no matter where they have it, someone will complain, They (the board) who actually keep the middle school/ youth going in this state, searched for weeks for places that actually had a date open and a facility big enough to do the two day event . This is what they found. They post and gave ample time for teams/state to know. Do you know how hard it is too find a facility in this state during quote “basketball season” to give up a whole weekend for wrestling. One, I would be thankful they found a place to have the state tournament during wrestling season. Options in this state for arenas in February are really sparse. Do a search yourself and you’ll see

This place isn’t the best to share information especially during the summer. I don’t think it was made clear on this thread where to find the state tournament venue.
It’s tough to find a venue... it’s tough to get people to meetings. It’s tough to make everyone happy. But what do you expect? Nobody to not say anything? I just hope this is a one year deal, and we can find a better location for years to come.
Unfortunately due to travel expenses I foresee teams not attending. ESP at the youth level. I pray that it’s not the case, but just being realistic.

This forum isn’t the forum for most information, www.kentuckyusawrestling.com , is where anyone that’s involved with coaching/running any youth/middle school organization. And as far as travel expenses go, that’s what fundraisers are for. Any organization at this level has to have that in order to pretty much go to any event in this state that is worthwhile. Unfortunately you’re correct in this “basketball state”, wrestling is a bottom tier sport. I coached for five years at this level and had too raise money throughout the year to be able to go to tournaments throughout the year across the state. Yes we didn’t make it to all of them. But we planned/funded most of the money to go to the state tournament wherever it was held.

Trust me I know... I don’t have an issue finding or being aware of where it find information. The forums is where most people get their information or through the emails (which gets overlooked). I agree and understand that’s what fundraisers are for, but just throwing out reasons why teams will say they can’t make it. We will do our part to get our guys to state.
Let’s be honest here... not every MS/Youth coach keeps their ears to what’s going on until about this time of the year. When it’s too late and now it just sounds like complaints after complaints. We’ve have to figure out a better way to get more coaches involved, information passed out to others better.
I appreciate the board and what they do. Can only imagine the time and energy spent.
I understand how this is not ideal for teams west of Louisville. We have a hard time getting kids to commit to youth state in Louisville every year because of the distance. I am appreciative to the Pikeville expo center for allowing us to use their facility. Free of charge I believe as well. I’m glad we didn’t get stuck in some high school some where trying to figure out how to run it.
In the big scheme of things its just a couple more hours of driving. Most everything else is the same. We should just embrace a money savings and roll with it.

You like Ervinland? You'll be moving back. HS state couldn't be in Murray. It's a basketball school. I'd bet they have games.
All this will be discussed at the coaches meeting Next month. It will not be debated here. We urge every Program to send a coach to this meeting. I will post the time and Venue for the meeting on the Google coaches group within the next week once arrangements are verified.

Can you post it here also? Or provide some instructions on the Google Coaches group? We are between coaches on the middle school team and would like more information. Thanks

I’m not sure I understand the reluctance (or refusal) to post that information here. There are likely more than a few coaches who have no idea about the coaches group, how to join, etc. as a former coach looking in from the outside, it feels like everything is now less transparent and secretive. Even the new site doesn’t directly state where the State Tourney is...you have to click on a link to find out the location. Why not just post it? Again, it feels secretive, and almost like this whole process wants to be kept quiet.
Like it or not, this is still the place where most come to get their information. Not using this site as a communication vehicle is wasting a resource to communicate and release information and is driving a wedge between the Board and the general wrestling community.
Rick they were asking about Coaches meeting which is only open for Coaches or team representative not the general public. The coaches meeting information will be sent out via Google Coaches Group and list serv no later than Tuesday 08/20..
All general information is on our KFWC webpage https://www.kentuckyusawrestling.org/page/show/1031369-middle-school-elementary-

I am a current assistant coach and this is where I get my info or ask Jon Carr. I have never heard of the google coaches group. I am not bitching, I just want to help the sport grow. This seems like a good outlet to share info.
Doc,
The googlre coaches group was set up by the prvious biard as Listserv was supposed to be going obsolete. I still use list serv as well as the google page. for all coaching and board issues everything else we send thru https://www.kentuckyusawrestling.org/page/show/1031369-middle-school-elementary- which is OUR KFWC Official website.

Some schools are not allowed to have fundraisers.
Holy moly. I just googled Pikeville and then mapped it. Talk about remote! Unbelievable.
Why not have the tourney, you know, where 90% of the participants actually live? That’s Louisville, NKY, and Lexington. Tons of facilities available inside of that triangle.
What a sad thing for the sport.

Because someone didn’t renew broadbent arena and it got booked. Then the rest of the state couldn’t produce a facility big enough. The Pikeville expo center said they would host it free of charge. So that’s what we have.
I know Union, Ft Campbell, and Christian will make the trip, but the Union youth group will probably be cut in half. We will see. I'd bet Paducah will.

This is where you are incorrect. There are not tons of facilities. In fact, there are few facilities in the whole state ghat can accommodate this kind of tournament. People do not realize the floor space for the mats, then combine seating, parking, cost. There are only a hand full of places that will work
I can remember a few years back researching it all to find a new home for state duals, the buildings just arent there. Its a tough situation, but I also see the need for a big facility a positive because of growth.
I suppose you could always make the tournaments smaller and it would be more easy to find a central location, but think it would hurt our growth
The simple truth about The Pikeville Expo Center as the host for the State Tournament. When it was discovered that we no longer had Broadbent as a venue(spring meeting) board members began the search for a venue that lasted 2-3 weeks with no venue anywhere in Lexington, Louisville, northern Ky. Or anywhere else in Ky that was big enough to host the number of kids that we traditionally serve or was available for any of the dates that we needed. Expo Center had offered up the site fully sponsored. These places don’t stay available long so a decision had to be made fairly quick. After two more weeks of searching it was cancel the tournament or host in Pikeville. Is it the best venue location? No it is not. But it was a better option than canceling. That is the simple truth.

So if I read this correctly, a vote was made (and passed) last fall to change the dates of the MS and Youth tournaments, without there being a venue contract/proposal in place for said new dates?

I would call that a fair assumption but what is more important here is the understanding that we as a whole need to make the most of the situation because it beats the alternative. Like I said before, it beats canceling.

That’s absurd. Of course if you don’t book an arena before hand it probably won’t be available. To say the only option is in a far away town in the edge of the most remote part of the state is just making excuses. People screw up. No big deal. Just own it.
If they are giving it to us for free, hopefully that means better awards, right?? Compared to Ohio who gets singlets and eagle trophies, we can step it up a notch if we aren't having to spend thousands on a venue.

I haven't been in a couple of years, but in the 6 or 7 years I attended (2011-2017) the medals were always nice (much nicer than high school in fact), finalists got singlets, and winners got brackets. Is that no longer the case?

Last year the medals were tiny. Like I had to squint to see them on the table (okay maybe an exaggeration but you get the point). For being a state champion, I feel like the kids deserve more. My kid has been going to state since 2015 and I have never seen them give out singlets to the finalists. In fact, she WAS a finalist in 2015 and didnt receive anything other than a medal. In youth, the kids could get a printed copy of the bracket but not a bracket board or anything special like that. I am hoping they will use the venue funds to put towards the (very well deserved) awards for the kids.
On 8/23/2019 at 11:58 PM, Nkawtg said:Pikeville is closer to Charleston, SC than it is a third of the state of Ky.
I believe you’ve missed the fact that it’s the only facility suitable for the number of kids that we serve, given the time restraints of trying to find this kind of venue in a short timeframe. For instance NKU has a program coming up and we really wanted to go there, bad news was that there arena is booked for 4 years in the window of time we need. There is no argument that the location is out there, but it’s a venue and it’s sponsored. Not to mention that it is located in region 4 which is the largest in the state if you want to use your Charleston South Carolina argument.
I stand by my previous post, it beats canceling. We need to pull together and make the best of what we have, division only hurts kids and the sport.

Middle School Had the 5.5 inch medals, singlets, bracket boards. Youth had the 3 inch medals and got to keep the bracket paper from the table.
All those contracts with vendors were voided when KSWA was dissolved and the new group was created.

This would be a statement that Ranger or Dutch could field better in detail but I remember 2013-2018 my son qualifying those years and their being brackets , finalist gear and huge medals that John Roth, Jason and Brandon designed. My son has one of those brackets on his wall and the gear and 4 MS medals to show for it. The only girl I can recall was Miracle at 92 lbs back when we were in Montgomery county in 2014-15 and she was a beast!! BUT I do agree that the last couple years the awards have changed and the excitement towards the finals were lack luster. Not fitting for kids that work hard all year for 4:30 of spotlight!!

Didn't realize things had changed. I guess the last time I really paid attention was 2016 (the year before the tourney moved to Broadbent), when one of the kids I coached made the finals, and I know for a fact that he did get a singlet (he wore it in the finals match). Back then, large medals, bracket boards, and singlets were standard practice. I can't really speak for the last 3 years.

These are all discussind that should be had between the coaches at the coaches meetings not in a forum setting like this. It undermines what the real reason we are all here for and that is the wrestlers themselves.

You are correct. I remember John and Brandon and I always saying our goal was to make these kids disappointed when they got to HS State by making the MS state an awesome experience. We tried really hard and Adam sometimes had to reign us in because we wanted to go too big. And as you mentioned through 2018 that trend continued.
New medals were ordered noone knows why. the previus medals were fine. The plans for this yaers tournament are set and will be all the the wrestlers. Ranger you are invited to come relax and enjoy. Our announcer will have fun time this yaer, Gameface knows him personally.

When the last board dissolved the KSWA to form whatever it is called now under KYUSA Wrestling they told me to cancel all the vendor contracts for singlets, medals, bracket boards.

I have to disagree with you here Bulldog ole buddy. This is exactly where all the people that love this sport can come and give their insight. It’s just that, an insight or opinion, thought or feeling. This exact forum is where we came to the realization we needed to start with 3 different divisions for youth to allow small, middle and big schools all have a chance to win team championships. Matt Lee and I had the pleasure to start that years ago and it seems to be a success. Same thing with the 16 man brackets and the weight classes vs 10% rule. Everyone on this sight loves this sport and Kentucky wrestling specifically. The previous admin did a great job with a lot of things for this sport just like the admins before them. We all did it for the same pay!!! The same as your collecting now!! It’s for the love of these kids and sport!!

Agreed. In order to continue to grow the sport, it’s important to hear the opinions from the non coaches/parents/fans. Doesn’t mean you have to do everything that group wants, but it’s certainly important to know what they are thinking, especially if there are issues that the board doesn’t know about. How can you look out for the best interests of your constituents if you don’t know how they feel?

There are 100's of people that read these posts and want to know whats going on and some are more than willing to help. Only a handful are on that coaching email list. I think that for every 1 person that bitches and moans, there are 5 that will help fix the problem.

100% agreed. We all love this sport so much that we would love to see it grow and these kids receive the same recognition as other neighboring states. But our numbers are what they are for the moment so we should focus on quality wherever it’s at. No reason at all with a free venue we can’t have large cardboard brackets, singlets for finals, large medals, spot lights, music and excitement!!! As far as the youth state, put a large thoroughbred trophy out there like any Way does with the Eagle trophy and they will drive the distance to win. Parents want value and something to show for it. Also I’ve always believed that we should find a way to financially support the champions to be able to travel and represent Kentucky on the National Dual Teams. With a free venue maybe this could help!!
It’s a lot easier to have finalist singlets in states such as WV and Ohio. They have a true state champion. They know exactly how many state finalist they will have. Ky might have 3-4 brackets for one age and weight class.

This is only done for the middle school. The youth we focus on more participation and quality metals for them. Unlike the OAC Where are you need to qualify for state and youth, Kentucky is open to any participants that Weighs in for regionals. Our numbers have never exceeded 1200 youth in one year. That number is comparable to what Cincinnati has alone. Our numbers have never exceeded 1200 youth in one year. That number is comparable to what Cincinnati has alone
Reschedule it for a place that isn’t so far removed from 95% of the participants who won’t go to Pikeville. Cincy is a better option. Indianapolis is a better option.
This is a very bad thing for the sport in Kentucky and everyone knows it.

An even worse thing would be to not have youth/ms state at all.
It's set and done for this year, we all just need to get behind it. Frankly, the contenders are going to travel no matter where its at because they usually travel much further for tournaments anyway. Don't kids and parents travel all over the place for baseball, basketball, football, etc. etc.
Take a look at the arena, this place is very nice https://www.appalachianwirelessarena.com/highlights. I was never a fan of nasty Broadbent anyway: can't come and go, no food options, filthy. From a facility perspective this place is much better.

I just looked and there are rooms available at the Landmark Inn and the Brookshire Inn and Suites. Also Pburg is only 25 min away and is a super easy drive. Paintsville is 35 min away. There is a super nice Ramada in Paintsville.
