state fundrasier

earlier in the year there was a post on this site about some kind of fundraiser or at state some kind of breakfast does any body know anything about this?

Yes, it didn't work out.  I was working with the Capital Plaza hotel to try and get a reasonably priced lunch of some sort at their hotel, in between morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday.  I asked them to shoot for a target price between $10-$15.  Their response was that they could not put this together for that price and make it profitable for us.  The general manager at that hotel seemed genuinely interested in helping out, but the catering manager did not seem interested at all in making this work.  I really thought it would have been doable from their end, but the catering manager claimed it was not.

well i think it is a great idea plee and i maybe next

I felt so too.  Do you think if we could get something worked out for $20 per person, would it be successful?  Would coaches/fans/wrestlers pay $15-$20 for lunch in a banquet hall down there at the Capital plaza if $5 went towards funding for Team Kentucky?  This I think they (capital plaza catering) would do.  But I think that price is too high.  The other problem is, you can absolutely not bring in outside food or drink to their banquet halls so they completely dictate the price.  However, you could do this in a private room.  I.e. you could get a suite down there, and have a lunch of some sort...but then no where to sit.

Oh yea, the other thing is....the KHSAA couldn't be involved directly because I was doing this for youth & middle school wrestling as well as H.s. wrestling.  They can't be affiliated with anything other than h.s. sports.  I spoke to Julian Tacket & Butch Cope about this...they would announce our fund raiser...that we could run outside the building, but that's as close as they could be to it.

I think a very profitable, and great fund raiser at state would be a potluck lunch.  But I don't know where it could be held at.  Do any of the coaches know if there's a room or office within the convention center that might be able to be rented?  If so, that may be a great way to go.  If it could be ran in the convention center, you could maybe do it for just high school wretlers....have a sign up sheet on this website for people to sign up to bring food.  Then sell admission for like $5-$10.  The only problem I could think of with this would be you'd probably have to get a vendors license with the KHSAA??

Anyhow, some sort of a fund raiser would be great at the h.s. state tournament.  It's the biggest gathering of wrestling fans in this state.  It would be very nice to raise some money down there to sponsor a Team Kentucky at all levels.  I tried, I just keep running into red tape.  If anyone has any pool with the officials down there (khsaa, convention center, capital plaza) and can get something approved, i can help with the grunt work (with the help of others).

both the potluck and the catering ideas are great but is the food going to be worth $20 because that is a big factor but i don't know if the food is worth yes it will be successful and if it is explained that $5 is going towards team Kentucky

yes, very true....that was the stopper for me on the catered luch.  it was going to be cold cuts and soup & chips.  and they said they could not do it for $10-$15 dollars and make it profitable for us.  for a potluck, IF one of the coaches such as Keith Smith could get a room in the convention center where we could set stuff up....and get permission, we could charge like $7-10 per person....and have all the food donated.  that could be really big.  it would be a lot of work, and I'm sure somewhere, someone will say no.  but if someone could just get the permission to do something like this, i and others would be willing to get the food & drinks down there.  it would be fun for the wrestlers/coaches....and we could raise a lot of money to help sponsor a national team.

i've got tons of crazy ideas like this if anyone else would like to discuss fund raisers for sponsoring national teams...pm me.  i'm going to be talking to mark hitchings this weekend to start gathering ideas for Team Kentucky middle school and possibly helping out with the high school team kentucky.  if anyone out there is experienced with this sort of thing for other sports, please step on up!!
