There were about 35 teams in attendance this weekend at the WSAZ Wrestling Tournament held in Huntington West Virginia. Representing Kentucky was Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central High School. This was one of the biggest high school wrestling tournaments I'd ever been to. This tournament was wrestled on 10 mats and the competition was great! Sheldon Clark place winners include Matt Slone, Ryan Kelly, Adam Dials, and Eric Musick. Johnson Central Place winners include Corey Spencer, and Tyler Grimm.
Sheldon Clark
Matt Slone placed 3rd posting a record of 5-1 with his only loss coming in the semifinals to Shawn Sexton of Independence High School.
Ryan Kelly placed third posting a record of 5-1 with his only loss coming in the semifinals to returning state champ Morgan Murphy from East Fairmont High School. Kelly defeated Huntington High School's Rob Hensley who is currently ranked 6 in WV.
Eric Musick place 5th posting a record of 5-2. His two losses were to Eric Veith of Point Pleasant High and Eric Morris of East Fairmont who is currently ranked 4th in WV at 140.
Adam Dials placed 2nd with his only loss on his 4-1 record coming in the finals to Ryan Fell of Oak Hill. Adam defeated East Fairmont's #1 ranked 215 in the state of WV in the semifinals.
Johnson Central
Corey Spencer placed 3rd posting a 5-1 record with his only loss being to Chuck Wents of Fairland Ohio. This match was horrible. Spencer was taking him down at will so he decided to go optional start. He cut the guy and stepped back about 3 steps. The Fairland kid rose up to his knees and stayed there, he refused to get up and kept his back turned to Spencer. Spencer then jumped back on top of Wents and the referee stopped the match and awarded Wents 1 point for unnessarry roughness. After Wents realized he didn't have to get up to win the match he just layed there and took the win by forfiet. The call was horrible and it was a tough break for Spencer but he did a great job by wrestling back to third.
Tyler Grimm placed 5th posting a record of 5-2 with his two losses being to the same opponent, Jay Turner, from Cabell Midland who is currently ranked 7th in state of West Virginia.
Kentucky was represented very well at this huge tournament which had of West Virginia's top ranked wrestlers. Congrats to all the KY guys that competed and placed.
