Proving the "Student" wrong....I hope!

I'm sorry, I have to get this off of my chest. There is someone on this web site that believes it is ok to "cry" or "scream" to the ref to get off of your back. I'm not stupid, I know it happens, but I would like to think it does not happen very often. I mean, is this acceptable in todays standard of wrestlers. If so I think it is time for me to quit and throw the towel in because the sport I have loved and adored for so many years has turned into a crock of sh**! I don't believe this to be true, I need some feedback. Please tell the last true sport on Earth hasn't become this CRAP!

i agree... I can't stand to see wrestlers cry off of their back, it is the most degrading thing that you could possibly do, why not man up and take your beatings...

Here we go again, this was over and you keep bringing it back up so who is doing the "crying"? I simply stated my opinion of the thing, and you stated yours, as well as others. It worked for him and it will continue to work for many others despite your opinion on the thing so you might want to go ahead and quit. I AM NOT SAYING TO TEACH THIS TO YOUR KIDS BUT IT HAS WORKED AND IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THE KID FROM "TRINITY I THINK" WAS HURT, CHOKING, STRATEGY, OR WHAT EVER.THE POINT IS HE GOT OFF HIS BACK AND BEAT THE OTHER KID, SO I THINK IF IT WAS STRATEGY THEN IT WAS A GOOD MOVE. Get off you soap box and dont let what other people say bother you so much. I hope this concludes our discussion.

I know of someone personally who did this many years ago back when refs were first told that if a kid is screaming or signaling that he is being choked, the ref MUST stop the match.  The kid who did this was ranked #1 at the time, was put on his back in the first or second round of state and panicked.  If he had to do it all over again, he would love to go back and "man up" and take his loss.  It is not one of the proudest moments in that wrestler's career for sure.  When I talked to him about it, he said 1) he was being choked a little bit...but could have survived 2) in the heat of the moment he panicked and that was the first thing that he thought to do....because he was absolutely stuck tight inthe middle of the mat...with a minute left in the period.  very little chance to survive.

A lot of people have made good points on these message boards about this.  Most refs are going to continue to break the match if a kid signals he is being choked or if he's screaming in pain.  BUT....there are some old school refs that this kid better watch out for.  I know of at least 2 that have told me if a kid tries that stuff and he's reffing, he will slap that mat quicker than you can blink your eyes and then get the kid some air.  If this kid gets a reputation of doing this repeatedly....it will burn him in the long run, right or wrong it will.  Both of these refs have been at the state tourney in the past, so anyone who's considering doing this....beware.  Coaches need to tell their kids this is NOT a valid way to fight off your back.  I doubt many if ANY coaches actually coach this tactic.  I beleive it's what a kid does when he hits that panic button.  I very seriously doubt that the kid in question ever had a coach tell him "everytime you go to your back, pretend you are choking".  Bridge, squirm, scoot out of bounds, anything but that.

Student - not to argue with you, but this is not a strategic move...it's cheating plain and simple.  It's taking advantage of a rule that was put in place to protect wrestlers in truly dangerous situations.  I know the kid i know that did this years ago...1 time....wishes he could go back in time and undo what he did and try to fight off his back for a period or take his loss.  It's a dishonorable thing to do really.  To act like it's a smart move or anything other than cheating is simply wrong.
