Were the bye's not random? It seems the #1 and #2 got all the bye's.

That's the way most tournaments work. I know in tennis especially, if there are 8-man seeded brackets and only six competitors, than the 1 and 2 seeds get first-round byes.
I hate random byes. Could you imagine in other sports, say the SEC men's basketball tournament, if Kentucky was the top seed in the conference and had to play in the first round, but fifth-seeded Vanderbilt got a bye? That wouldn't make much sense at all.

but the top notch kids getting byes pervents their team from getting points that others get in the first round
In wrestling I know that the bye's are almost always random.
As Fuller said, bye's take possible team points away from those 1st and 2nd seeded wrestlers.
If you dfid the byes at random wouldn't you do the whole draw at random and that could cause problems with the number 1 and 2 seeded wrestlers wrestling before they are suppose to

No, you seed the top 4 or 5 wrestlers. Then randomly draw in the other kids and byes.
I thought tennis and wrestling were the same: If a kid with a bye wins his first match (i.e. second round), then he gets advancement points for BOTH rounds. However, if a kid receives a first-round bye and then LOSES in the second round, he doesn't get advancement points since he didn't technically advance on his own. As long as the kid wins like he should, why is this a hindrance?

When you recieve a bye in the 1st round you must win your next match to get the advancement points in the 1st round. (2 points advancement)
However you lose the opportunity to pin your opponent and recieve an extra 2 points.
This may not seem very many points, but if you have 4 or 5 1st seeds that is 8-10 points lost and I have seen many District/Regional tourneys lost by less than 10 points.

You should expect most #1s to get the bonus points in the opening round of a regional tournament. Also, it can be big for the #2 as well if the #3 is just as good or pulls the upset in the semis then your #2 doesn't get any points from that first round bye.
A couple years ago in the Region 5 seeding meeting Coach Hall from Fern Creek blew a gasket because his top seeded kids kept drawing the bye even though we were using a randon draw. He knew it was important points being given up.
Ranger, You are correct. But sometimes its just making sure your rival has as many or more than you do. So, no points are gained, but none are lost.
