Region 6

"Frankfort, Ky- Northern Kentucky produced just two finalsits at Saturday's state wrestling championships (Brian Peace and Mason Reid from Ryle). It was the lowest area representation since at least 1995, when KHSAA started retaining finalist records."

"Aside from Peace and Reid, the only other area wrester to place in the top three was Scott 145-pounder Daniel Thuenerman..."

This is from the Cincinnati Enquirer today, and it blows my mind that Region 6 which in my opinion has been consistently the toughest region in the state only had TWO finalist and one other going for 3rd. Overall there was 12 state placers, the lowest total for the region since they started the 32 man brackets. I know a lot of it has to do with young lineups, but with the development of new programs and old programs getting better and better it shocks me to see this region struggle like they did this year. Anyone got any thoughts on this??

I'm unsure to the size of region six, but it seems as though the schools within it are dwindling. While SK, Ryle and Campbell usually have solid teams, teams like Dixie, Holmes and Scott have been loosing numbers of the past decade. This is primarily because these schools have absolutely no feeder program. Newport and Conner each have middle school programs that show promise along with the Grey, Twenhofel and Campbell Co. programs.

I think that this has lead to a lack of competition throughout NKY wrestling

region 6 has been struggling for a few years now but in the next couple of years they should be the toughest region in the state campbell and simon kenton also connor have some very good freshmen and sophomores like shotwell, vaughn ozborne, bates , wilson, bradford, brown, Lee, hogben, frietsch, neal, norberry, schnider, pue from connor and dixie has a pretty tough 171 pounder who is a freshman what i am saying is that the reason region  has been week for the last cople of years is because they are very young.

Lee, Bates and Shotwell are freshman.

And the two that were in the finals should be back next year too

Two years ago region 6 was hands down the toughest region in the state. Ryle finished second that year, Campbell fifth, Conner tie for nineth and Simon Kenton right behind that. That year thou was filled with upper classmen. Conner alone had 9 that year. So from that stand point i do believe region 6 is  young region and has a lot and i mean a lot of good young talent that has a bunch of potential. If i'm not mistaking region 6 in 2005 had 8 finalist ( Ruschell, Aylor, Wilson, A. Cooper, N.Cooper, Nolan, Stone, Orth) and a ton in the medal rounds...(Egan, Brown, Goodmen, Schuerer, Thuenerman, Rust, Peace, Goldsby, J. Cooper, Lageman, D. Stone...just to name the ones off the top of my head) So i think it has to do with a. the popularity of the sport in Kenton County schools is decreasing (Scott, Dixie) and b. a young set of teams, i know first hand that conner is graduating 2, and from the paper today ryle is returning its highest 6 point scores in the state this year. So age is a factor

Also CAmpbell has only one senoir who didnt even make it to state and has some pretty solid bigger guys coming in this next season

I agree...

Over the next three or four years region six should be working its way back on top.

I think we will see a huge improvement in region 6 next season.

i agree especially with all the determination

2 of region's 6 young guys came into the state tourney banged up.  Brown had a pulled hamstring and broken collarbone.  Shotwell had something wrong with his hip and a busted rib and didnt wrestle for a few weeks before regions.  There was a SK/CC duel the week before region and they couldn't wrestle each other cause they were beaten up.  Both guys will be tough next year.  They pulled off an awesome region finals! :-D

You've got Scheuer, Brewer, both older Supes, Norberry (with dedication), Ozzie, Fuller, both Vaughns, Frietsch (with dedication), Brownsfield, Brown (with dedication), Shotwell, Belew (mis-spell) Talon,  just to name a few, the feeder program from SK is just now seeing results, Gray is already seeing it. I think in two years there will be some very tough Seniors. Sorry if I left anyone out, there are many up and coming good wrestlers from 6 that will draw some attention, hopefully we won't lose kids like Chitwood's caliber we lost this year, the coaches have their work cut out for them to keep these kids involved, glad it is not my job to do that!

I'm pretty sure that Scheuer graduated
