Drew Newberry and Omar jarvis will be 8th graders next year. Also the guy that beat Newberry at middle school state was Trent Hardy from Ashland. They have it wrong on the middle school website

I heard Elliot Martin was going 112 or 119 so he could get his college rep up.

Schneider and Weckbach are pretty set on flip flopping the way u have it

Elliot Martin will not be 103 next year :D

so is it true that the khsaa will be going by these rankings or by the kentuckywrestling.org rankings? just wanted to know

No so far, KWCA preseason rankings are posted also on there site.

I know the preparaion for a state title in 2008 started at February 18, but I thought I would at least wait until March to start talking about next season.  I have received a little feedback on guesses where kids may end up next season and I have made a few of my own just based on what I perceived of how easy or difficult it was for someone to make weight this year.  I'm sure I am wrong on a few, but I thought this post would at least stir the pot a little and get everyone talking.

Much like last pre-season there are a lot of surprises team-wise.  Let me say this before the Larue folks have a cow and start screaming at me.  I really don't believe you will finish that low.  But with all of the senior losses I have no idea how your lineup will look next year so you are not scoring highly right now.  South Oldham started out the same last year and once I knew who was in the lineup and they showed their stuff they moved up the ranks.  Another big question mark will be the impact of the middle school studs.  As has been discussed we have 2 interesting phenomenons heading into next season.  A dominany senior class and some really good up-and-coming middle schoolers.  It will be interesting to see where the sophomores and juniors fit into the mix.

Hey, that's a good sign.  I don't think I have ever seen the pre-season rankings before September from the coaches.  I think the interest of the fans (like so many on this site) is being voiced to the coaches and they are responding with more timely information.  Thumbs up to them.

I know there are a lot of guys that don't plan on going up in weight, but there is another 7 months until the season starts and almost 10 months until competition is underway.  Plus, a lot of these guys are young and still growing.  There will be a lot of surprises with weight gain over the off season.

ranger just wondering but why do you have saintX so low i mean they have steadily improved since last year and made a good showing at state finishing 18th also a lot of their varsity team will be returning along with some very good wrestlers moving up from JV

The big reason is they lost 17 of their 24 individual wins (6 seniors) from the state tournament.  I'm sure their coach won't let the drop off, but I think the guys that are stepping up to varsity have something to prove still.

Good Rankings as always keep em comin Ranger

Ranger - is there anything you DONT know? How many fingers am I holding up?

Ranger - is there anything you DONT know? How many fingers am I holding up?

2?

Unfortunately, there is much that I DON'T know.  I do spend a lot of time trying to keep up with all of the results and stats that I can get my hands on, but I'm not as young as I used to be, so I probably forget some of the info.  But you guys usually keep me on my toes and make sure I know it when I goof up.

I bet you Mrs. Ranger would say that there is plenty he doesn't know :-D

especially how to read her mind.  :-o

Eaglewrestler, it wasn't the Ashland kid who beat Newberry at state, unless the kid wore a Henderson County Singlet and wrestled in Region 1 (LaRue's Region).

And kywildman, will Joey be able to make 103 next year???

Union County will be hard to beat next year.  Both Duals and State should go to them.  Good rankings.

My bad i dont know what i was thinking. So Newberry beat him at regions and then lost at state?

yes, i think his name was Jimmy Jones (?) the only reason i know this is because Drew is my little brother's best friend, and is always making fun of me because he is larger than me!!

yes hes the only one at 103 who didnt have to drop wait the most he has gained was 105

I just wanted to state that Im gonna be going 140 again....i mean i might grow but i doubt it, seeing that i dropped weight from the year before last.

LaRue's in Region 2 not region 1

Ryan Harlow will be a 171 this year.

Moore's 112 Zack Micheal is moving up to 119, and there 119 Shawn Cook is going down to 112

LaRue's in Region 2 not region 1

They are region 1 in middle school

i'm going either 189 or 171 next year lol :-D

Ranger,

I agree with some of your rankings, but I don't understand how you could rank Ryan Kelly above Mark Jones. Jones has beaten him two years in a row at state. Even this year before the stoppage, Jones would have been out front. I agree Kelly had a better showing during the match, but that fact(principle) remains, as you mentioned in another post regarding Courtney and Theunamen; that Jones won. If you look at the match, Jones scored a takedown on Kelly, when Kelly screamed out the first time, which would have been 2, and another takedown taking Kelly right to his back right before the dislocation, which would have been 5. Given that the wrestler screamed out, the match had to be stop, thus no points awarded. At this juncture with 30 seconds left Jones would have been up 11 to 8.

Still all of that means nothing, but in the end Jones won, so what constitutes a second place ranking? I think his style of wrestling hurts him when it comes to certain polls, but in others the standards are definitive. Victory is victory. So often this is the case when one wrestlers wins because of injury during a match, he is awarded the victory and the ranking in your polls, does this principle not work in reverse?

I also noticed that wrestlers that have never beaten certain opponents are ranked above others in your polls due to their finish at state. We both know, that rankings are just what they are and meant to be nothing more, and they are not indicative of what happens in the matches. I just hope there is no bias involved.

Just my opinion. Thanks for listening.

i agree with this...its who wrestles the whole match!

Definitely no bias against Jones or North Hardin.  Coach Smith is a good guy and I have only seen good things from the wrestlers and fans.  I must have missed something during the Kelly-Jones match.  Plus, I'm sure a few Sheldon Clark fans will chime in.  The last I saw it was 8-4 Kelly.  The next thing I know Kelly goes down.  I admit I didn't see the entire match, but it looked as if Kelly had the match before his injury.  That is my basis for the ranking.

Overall, yes you are right state does weigh heavily in my ranking.  That's because that tournament is THE measuring stick.  If someone steps it up and advances farther than others then it means something.  If you have particular concerns or issues please send me a pm and we can discuss.  As others can attest, I am more than welcome to share my thoughts on any individual ranking.

Ranger,

No need sir, I am just one who examines things in a different light, and wondered about that choice. The match was indeed 8-4 , and with the final takedown and exposure that resulted in Kelly's injury, Jones would have pulled ahead by one. Kelly is a fine young man, and so is Jones, I can't wait to see them match up again. Jones wrestled the wrong match against Kelly. I know these are just preliminary rankings, so no harm no foul.

Continue doing what you do, and I'll enjoy analyzing from a different perspective.

Thanks for the response.

not to sure at vaughn being 112. he is looking really heavy he looks round 135ish

why isn't Preston Shoopman ranked at 152 he has beaten alot of those guys i know for a fact that he beat the guy that is ranked number 11 like 5 times.

what no numbers...  :-(

the guy that preston beat is ranked 11

From what I was watching of that match it actually looked like the sheldon clark kids was handling north hardin pretty good and in my opinion was going to win....it's hard to guess about the last takedown that ended the match because if the injury hadn't occured he may not have gotten any back points or even the takedown for that matter if he was able to scramble out of it.

hahahah you better because 285 belongs to bailey!

hahahah you better because 285 belongs to bailey!

ok bailey i kno your weekness and ill tell every one lol but yes i think it is to but im going to try my hardest to not make it your year but good luck next year

I know Bailey's weakness too.  Just before the tie up, ask him to spell any word with more than one syllable.  As he's thinking, and this will take a long time, shoot a side single for the takedown.  You can go for back points but if he escapes, repeat the process mentioned above, :-D  Just kidding Bailey.  He' the man at HWT.  There's no disputing that.  But, as we've seen before, one error or mistake and you can lose to anyone.

what no numbers...   :-(

Oh, you got me.  I will fix them.

In 285 Nathan Gray from TC he went undefeated against Tony Turner from SK and 2-1 against Evan bullock from laf and 1-0 against pc cobble from cen

He also lost to Mayes of Franklin County at region by decision (no lucky pin).  Did he get injured at region or what, because he didn't perform very well there finishing 6th.  That's what dropped him off the board, although he is actually #21 on my list.

I agree that the Kelly was winning the match, but my questions went back to the basics. A wrestling match is 6 minutes, not 5 1/2. Don't misconstrue my questioning of the ranking against Kelly, because like I said he's a fine wrestler, but a victory in my eyes is a victory. Jones pinned him in 06, and won by injury default in 07. He is 2-0 against Kelly, so my questions was, what merited a 2nd place ranking to Kelly. Thirty seconds is a long time left, anyone who wrestled know matches can be won and lost in that amount of time. Take Wolsifer-Wheeler, Sullivan-Evans, just to name a few. If you say kelly dominated on 07, then Jones dominated in 06, that leaves us square. Lets use more notables, if Cortney loses to Theunamen by injury default do you rank him above Cortney? Just a thought. I think Kelly has to complete the match and win convinsingly as he would have, but he didn't for whatever reason. To predict what could of happened in that final 30 seconds is impossible, but the outcome is what is recorded.

no he was just overlooking some of the guys that he was going to wrestle and the beat him.

i spoke to Tates creek head coach and he said that gray had the flu the week of regions

Yes gray did and both people he lost to bullock and mayes he had beaten during the season everytime

:|come on now #21 thats an insult

:|come on now #21 thats an insult

how is 21 an insult thers what 70 HWTS in the state???? 21 isnt bad

I've had the opportunity to role with Kevin Snyder from Desales alot lately. I definately think he should be ranked at 52. Maybe even top 15. I know that you have to have more than just my word but I asure you he'll be a tough guy come this next season.

i watched preston shoopman almost tech fall that kidd from desales at the capital city classic

i like your use of words its almost like you making fun of some posters above

I don't usually chime on these things but Evan Bullock (LAF) suffered from learning he had diabetes and had to adjust his diet and life to the disease. He came on at the end of the year and is working this summer to get a grip on what he has. If he works hard, he will match or do better than Rangers predictions.

yeh bullock will he looked really dizzy in his matches and passed out in some.

He's gotten alot better. He used to just work legs from top and stuff but he's really switching it up and workin' on his stand-up game. Trust me, he'll show he's more than he was last season.

Where is Brad Hitchings on these rankings?

2nd at 171

Is there any reason Hitchings is ranked at 171, 19 pounds higher than his weight this year?

Can't make 152 and doesn't want to run into John I suppose.

He is a growing boy and can still pack some muscle onto his frame.

penguin, I can't speak for Hitchings, but I know I don't want to run into John.

Haha, I don't either but I don't have a choice, during the season I wrestle with him like 3 times a week.

Nice use of the third person there Nathan! Keep up the good work in english class! :-D

haha what can i say

Can't make 152 and doesn't want to run into John I suppose.

good point, i never looked at it that way. Except now he has to deal with Mason Reid

You could throw pat milford in at 103 he gave me a deascent match at regionals.

I have him in the "insulting" 21-25 range at 152.

I think that William Northington, by the end of next season, will be in a place where he could place. He'll only be a freshman but at the rate he improves and learns I think he'll be bringin' home a medal.

I have him in the "insulting" 21-25 range at 152.

ranger can you put in the 21-25 rankings

I will get them in there at the next update which will be early April (I'm on a monthly schedule until pre-season).  Speaking of updates, when can we expect to see the results of the Gable tournament at Union?

I only know a couple of results from the Gable Classic. Winning first for Union were Jarvis Elam(112, beat Travis Girten of North Posey, Indiana in the the finals match. Girten finished 2nd at the Mater Dei Holiday Classic this year.) Mitch Ervin (160, beat cousin Tanner Wedding who placed 8th in Indiana at 160 this year.) Keaton Thomas (105, next year freshman) Isaac Thomas (105, defeated Henderson's Chris Meriweather(regional runner up at 103) in double-overtime to claim first, sophomore next year) Caleb Ervin (119, freshman next year) Luke Ervin (140, took a forfeit over Isaac Ervin in the finals of 140 match.) and Timothy McKenney(160, next year freshman.) Placing 2nd for Union were Joshua Willett(145) Steve Taylor(285) Tanner Wedding(160) Duncan Taylor(125, next year freshman) Isaac Ervin(140, didn't wrestle finals vs. Luke Ervin.) and Jakup Baker(152, cousin to Jeff Baker of Union who was a 2x regional champ and brother to a state 5th placer.) Union will be sending an All-Star team to the Dixie National Duals in Homewood, Alabama this weekend. 9 dual meets in 2 days.

who won heavy?

is weddin movin down to union county...or is he juss wrestling with them this summer

I think either a guy from Illinois or a guy from the No-Ox team(Hardin Schools) won at heavy, and no Jordan, I don't think Wedding is moving to Union Co. There are rumors of it but its highly unlikely he will. He just wrestles from Union in the offseason.

well thanx and who are you pridewrestler? guessin your from union? lol but thanx for the info.

Houchins is going to be hard to stop at 189.

I agree three Houchins is very tough and, mark my words will be a State Champ at least once before he graduates, he has the work ethic it takes to make a champ.

I agree with Mr. Granby about Houchens.  I know he and Nickel knock heads all off season long.  They are training partners.  They were last season and that was one reason for Nickel's improvement.  They both have extraordinary work ethics and I can reasonably assume Houchens will improve from his sophomore year to his junior year much the same as Nickel did his.

when are the new rankings comin out?

Yea. I can only read everypost over and over again every morning before first period so many times before Daniel Sauer thinks i'm obsessed. lol. I NEED YOUR NEW RANKINGS!!! They made me change my name because of you. The least you could do is update son.

I feel ya...

hey ranger its been a month and still no new rankings, come on now

I feel ya...

There's not really enough action to update the rankings so often in the off-season.

I can really only see the need for about 2 (Maybe 3) pre-season rankings during the summer. There just isn't going to be enough change to justify a new set of rankings  :|

Does any other state sites do summer rankings more often? Ohio?

I do have a number of changes that I have made based on some feedback I received.  But I really wanted to get the Border Wars and Gable (Union) info before putting out the update.  Maybe I'll do it anyway in the next couple days, but would really prefer that info to see how fat some guys are already this spring.

Preston Shoopman will be 152 for sure.
