What all goes into the decision makin' process when it comes to chosing the MVW at state. Could someone who upset someone like Johnny Wolsiefer during the tourny get the award simply because he upset such a dominant opponent?

Yes it can and has happened.
Dickey Casselman won the MVW award in 1991 for upsetting Craig Burtleson when there were several others that could have won it that year. In 1990 Mike Migliaccio won it because of an upset over Willie Ennells (I however didn't see it as an upset).
I don't agree with this philosophy, but it happens.
Is it not just an accumulation of votes cast by the head coaches participating in the state tournament? Anyone could win.
I think there should be two different awards. The MVW goes the the most outstanding wrestler for the tournament. In this case I think that a wrestlers who has the most outstanding performance should win. Such as an upset champion. In my opinion an award for the most outstanding wrestler for the year should be created. We could have a Mr. Wrestling award just like the other sports do. Obviously this would go the wrestler who dominated start to finish.

That's a great idea...i think that's been discussed on here...perhaps this could be sponsored by the coaches association or www.kentuckywrestling.com.
