Recruting wrestlers for the team.

How does your school recruit new wrestlers for your team?

I know many of the teams recruit by having a Jr. high team.

What other ways do teams recruit, especially those that don't have Jr. high teams.

usually look for smaller people to fill in the smaller weight classes first because they are usually the hardest to fill, thats how i got coaxed into wrestling, by the promise that i would start varsity at 103 by a certain Mister Derek Nickel. Look for freshman so that there not just hopelessly wrestling their senior year and they learn all the basics then and dont have an opportunity to cmoe back next season. Also, look at your football team to find muscular guys who have a lot of strength. Thats the only things that come to my mind.

Start a youth program to get the kids and parents interested early.  Then allow word of mouth to spread and watch your program grow.

How do other teams get the high school kids interested.  We can't seem to get more than 5-7 kids interested.

A youth program just is not going to happen here.  We have had a youth program for 5 years but not during the school year, we do not have a practice site.  We do have a youth program March/April till the end of the year, but none of these kids stay interested when they get to high school.

the new wrestlers @ caldwell this year just heard about joining from wrestlers that knew were we need kids at. or coach walls just talks to kids at football games

Regrettable our football program discourages wrestling, ignorance.

Hope is all works out, you have to start with the youth to develop a team.

Southern has many ways..

Our coach says:

* "If you wrestle for me,ill tear up this referral and noone will know about it"..

or

  * "Hay...this is random but how much do you weigh?? 113...no no no you look like a 103. Wanna wrestle?!, you could be a champ!!"

or

*"Wrestling will help you tackle better"(LOL YES JOE POWERS:"I dunno coach i dont like the spandex it makes me feel femonin")

*We know kids that know kids that wanna wrestle

Our coaches actually discourage wrestlers from playing football due to the fact that two years ago our Senior 189 was decent but underachieved all year drastically due to an ankle injury he had from playing football.

I think you can be successfully in both.

Wrestling programs need football players more than football needs wrestlers.

Wrestling will always teach the bigger guys "good technique - good hand fighting" and make them better football players!

I think its wrong for any coach to discourage kids from playing multi sports unless your a "blue chip" ready to go professional. then I can understand focusing on one sport.

How many good baseball players got hurt during wrestling and weren't successful?

Injuries are a part of all athletics,

for those that have problems with football coaches- show them the article that was in the C-J on 5/14/07 about the Jets inviting wrestlers to camp.  these guys have not played football since middle school.

So are they going to play for the jets or are they just training at the mini camp with them??

Thats pretty Intresting..

yea it is interesting

Something I have done the last couple of years is have the P.E. teacher do a unit about wrestling.  We take each class down and show them the wrestling room, give an overview of weight classes and some general rules(scoring, out of bounds, etc.).  Then we demonstrate a few moves and show some matches.  I usually record the NCAA finals each year and show some of those matches.  The P.E. teacher gives a test after the unit.  I have picked up a few kids from this and it definitely raises the awareness of the sport in our school.

Wow. That really sounds like it would work. Maybe we should try to employ these types of recrutment tactics at my school.

In our PE class at southern, we usually wrestle around a bit.. those who know how do anyway. Some kids just tackle eachother on the mat and roll around..lol
