For conversation's sake I am using the wrestler's weight class their senior year as their weight since most moved up as they grew older. I have listed more than one at some weight classes because I am undecided, if I have a favorite I have put it in bold.
1990's
103- Chris Valentine (not many seniors at this weight)
112- Shawn Smith
119- Josh Preece
125- Dean Williams, Tom Cibull (did not get to see Cibull wrestle)

135- Chris Dunn
140- Brian Selke
145- Joe Carr
152- Don Blevins

215- Josh Whitaker (weight class did not exist until 1995)
275- Livingston Merrit, Dion Washington (I know Washington never won it but I heard he was awesome just the same)
2000's (seniors only have been included for this year, except for Harrison Courtney)
103- Dan Trejo (not many seniors at this weight), Elliot Martin?
112- Billy Clark (only senior at this weight), Travis Sullivan?
119- Kyle Ruschell (if Sullivan is here this year it won't matter, Ruschell was better in every aspect)
125- Jason Daviaux, Derek Scott, Coty Lewis?
130- Ozzy Parker (not very many good choices here), Coty Lewis?
135- Brad Cooper, Jacob Murton (toss up, both excellent wrestlers, would love to see this match)
140- Scott Cooper Luke Metzker (even though Cooper won the match in the state finals Metzker was the better wrestler, he lost on a controversial call and destroyed him at state duals earlier that year), Bryan Peace?
145- Jairus Murton, Isaac Knable, Harrison Courtney?
152- Craig Cooper (not very many good choices here), Harrison Courtney, Mitch Ervin?
160- John Wolsiefer
171- Eric Slugantz
189- Richard Starks
215- Taylor Scherer
275- not many good choices here, I don't know who to pick

135 Jacob Murton

171 Eric Slugantz
189 Richard Starks
215 Taylor Shearer
HWT Mike Clark
I won't bother with this year, because I think the rankings basically show that. Just based on guys I actually saw wrestle and picking weights just to make it interesting and fit them in the lineup:
103 Kyle Ruschell (as a junior; I think he was better than Trejo)
112 Pat White (shouldn't be legal to be that big, strong, and quick as a 112 pounder)
119 Pat Martz
125 Joe Carr
130 Brad Cooper
135 Jacob Murton
140 Isaac Knable
145 Chris Hagen
152 Horn - split the difference on his weights (although Trice may get the spot)
160 One of the deepest weight classes in KY history - Wiard (my favorite), Zinga, Ennels, Holbrook, Wolseifer, Auston Cooper - pick one
171 Tendai Charasika
189 Richard Starks
215 Taylor Scherer
275 Bruce Stepp (I didn't see him at heavy, but I made a spot for Starks)
If I tried to do this it would take me all day.
The biggest problem for me (Since I'm so old) is that many of the wt. classes no longer exist.
98
105 (could be 103)
126 (could be 125)
132 (either 130 or 135)
138 (could be 140)
155 (could be 152)
167 (either 160 or 171)
Then we had the year where we had the 100 wt. class and 106. (I can't remember all the classes that year)
I Think what may be even more interesting would be to make a region all star team.
8 all stare teams and then we could match them up. (maybe even have back ups just in case someone gets hurt :-D) Kind of like an all time regional dual team.
A few guys that I think should be on the list somewhere, but not sure where.
119 - Rick Barker, 3X Ky state champ....not many know, but this man was raised in the Austrailian outback by a pack of dingos from birth til the age of 10. In dingo language, dingos sometimes say "Did Rick Barker eat your baby?" The answer is usually yes. Some habbits are hard to break, to this day, the man still eats babies.
138-145 - Robby Clarkston. 4X Ky state champ.
145-155 - Troy Cole. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Troy Cole IS the boogey man! He sleeps under your bed.
HWT - Frank Wolnitzek. 2X undefeated Ky state champ, H.S. all-american. Enough said.
103 - Dan Trejo
112 - Travis Sullivan
119 - Kyle Ruschell
125 - Tyler Voth
130 - Joey Sanders
135 - Jacob Murton
140 - Brian Peace

152 - Mitch Ervin
160 - John Wolsifier
171 - Will Starks
189 - Richard Starks

more realistically, if lexington (fayette co.) had their own team like many other counties, theyd b unstoppable
it would be race between Fayette county and Jefferson county(Louisville)
125- Dean Williams Jr
160- Ian Horn was beat than Wolsefier
it would be race between Fayette county and Jefferson county(Louisville)
tru that. louisville does have a lot of solid wrestling teams.
a lot of em private schools.
so ya it would b a crazy rivalry between lexington and louisville
it would be race between Fayette county and Jefferson county(Louisville)
I think a lot of counties could make that arguement.
In Nky Campbell would be (Campbell, Newport, old Newport Catholic)
Boone Co. Would be (Ryle, Boone, Conner)
Kenton Co. would be (Simon kenton, Scott, Dixie, Holmes)
An all oldham county team would be pretty tough. Especially when Scott, Muerner, Scherer, Warner, Young, both Zeppas, Morlatt, Houchens, Kusnir, were all wrestling at the same time.
I got bored so I looked at 2006 and came up with a line up
103 Andre Zeppa NO
112 Antonio Zeppa NO
119 Daniel Muerner SO
125 Derek Scott SO

Wow Coach thats an amazing line-up with some awesome wrestlers. I hate being in the same region with Oldham County which will only keep improving with the outstanding middle school development that continues to occur.

I would definitely have to throw Harrison Courtney in there at 152 over Willie Ennels. Also, I think that Livingston Merritt should be at 275 right here, to make room for Taylor Scherer.
This year.

I do see your point, but Livingston acctually took 1 loss his senior year at 275. Where at 215 he was so dominant his 10th and 11th grade years. but I do see that you would have to make room in other weights.
more realistically, if lexington (fayette co.) had their own team like many other counties, theyd b unstoppable
i always wondered what a team like that would b from wrestling to football to bball but since this is a wrestling website who do u think the starting line up would be 4 a if fayette co. had thier own team?
I think jpizar83 hit on nose for sure. There handfull of wrestlers better than murton to fill that spot and most recently Cooper, did you all for about Metzger and in my opinion got robbed his senior year. Cooper, Metzger, Dunn, Dean all in front of Murton hands down, never wrestled anybody worth ever mentioning again or anybody that had any credentials to speak of and his college career, well don't know much on that one but if he was doing something at all we would of heard about him like Cooper, Ruschell or Starks and I know Copper is NAIA but he did very well. Oh yeah Will won it twice, but when he wrestled his weight class wasn't that strong I am feel pretty strong sayn that Eric Slugantz, who is also a Woodford boy and a two timmer who I know would eat Will for dinner. Eric was pretty cold. Hvywt, I think is wrong, the best match I ever saw for that weight class was a kid from North Hardin and Cambellsville, both huge, not fat, but huge fast strong wrestlers and it was a battle till the end.
takedownartist;
That was Dill from North Hardin and Ramsey from Campbell Co.
Was a match for the ages. Like to titans going at it.
I don't think anyone has even mentioned Mike Migliatchio(sp.) at 152 from TC, I remember him taking it to Willie in the finals. That guy was a beast and also had a solid D1 college carrier.
103 should be John Fahy

I'm sorry, but I don't think any of those guys are better than Murton. Cooper is the only one who could be mentioned in the same sentence as him, and I would still take Murton any day of the week. Murton got 3rd in the NAIA nationals his freshman year. In high school he wrestled a couple of big names, including Jordan Burroughs, whom Murton defeated rather handily. Burroughs might be worth mentioning considering that he only went on to win senior nationals that year, and is currently the #1 ranked 157 pounder in Division 1.
When did Murton wrestle Burroughs?
When did Murton wrestle Burroughs?
2005 Beast of the East. They met in the quarter finals with Murton winning 13-8.
There will be much debate on this topic and many wrestlers can be left out due to people not being lucky enough to watch them at their peak or just plain bias towards WKY or NKY. Overall KY has put out some monster wrestlers and not all chose to take it to the next level or chose to play soccer or football at the next level ( Ian Horn, Miguel Merritt) or got injured along the way.
I would definitely have to throw Harrison Courtney in there at 152 over Willie Ennels. Also, I think that Livingston Merritt should be at 275 right here, to make room for Taylor Scherer.
I would agree with Livingston, however I would still take Willie over Harrison.
I agree and please dont say that im being bias... Its just one ...well 2 mans opinion
It gets tough when you have to pick between Bruce Stepp and Livingston Merritt...
Yeah but I say Put one at 215 and the other at Heavy.
and I wont be a homer and say Livingston is the better.. Hell, Bruce Stepp beat 2 really good wrestlers in the Grubbs brothers
Didnt know that about Murton in NAIA, Cooper still would of won just like Metzger and Dunn and Dean. Any of those guys, take your pick Name one person he beat in high school worth talking about, that had any record or big names that had done something. Hell id take Ruschell over Murton also.

His sophmore year he had some alright competetition. Jordan Lewis(State Champ) , Ben Hines and Carlos Rodriguez to name a few. After that it seemed like everyone tryed to avoid him like the plague. Hes the best I have seen come through Kentucky in the last 8 years in my opinion. I think he would have been an AA if he had chose to go D1.

Name one guy on the national level that Metzger beat or Cooper? Murton beat the Senior National Champion that year! You can't get any better than that!

Not to be nit-picky, but wouldn't fargo Junior nationals be better than that? I agree with your point though. Murton was better in h.s. than those guys. Maybe someone could argue Brad Cooper...but not the other guys. I'd say placing in the Beast of the East as he did, beating this Burroughs guy would put him higher on the list.

Well of course Fargo would be as tough or tougher. But then again, Fargo is freestyle/greco, and senior nationals is folkstyle. I have seen some wrestlers win fargo and not win senior nationals, and vice versa.
Cooper, in my opinion, is the only one out of those listed by takedownartist who could be mentioned in the same breath as Murton. Murton didn't lose a single match to Kentucky opponents, and I am pretty sure Cooper didn't lose to in-state competition either during his sophomore, junior, and senior campaigns. We all know that Metzger lost to in state opponents a few times. As for Dean (Williams I assume), give me a break, he was only a one time champ. Dunn has an argument I guess, but he was right before my time, and I just know he was a 3 timer. Maybe someone could help me out with his other accolades?
Dean Williams? Give me a break... I wrestled him personaly and he isnt anywhere in the area of this list,,,
Murton also beat Jordan Burroughs ( starter at 157? for nebraska right now) at the Beast of The East

Dunn won state three times and placed third as a freshman. His freshman year (96) was the first year they disallowed 8th graders to compete in high school until they recently changed it back. I'm not sure of the Woodford line-up his 8th grade year but he very well could have started and maybe placed at state.
I also don't know the exact details of Metzker's career but I only know of four losses throughout his career, he probably had one or two more. However his senior year he was beating Cooper in the finals in a close match (after destroying him 10-1 at state duals earlier in the year) and the ref called a reversal when I don't know if there was even a loss of control. To be fair the loss of control should have been called to send the match into overtime to let the wrestlers decide the winner but the 2 was called which ended the match. 2x champ (9 and 11) 2nd (12) and a 3rd (10); quite the career if you ask me.
Dunn's 8th grade year was the year we had the different weight classes - 100, 106, 112, 119, 126 ect..... I think he would've started and place that year as well.
Bye the way, he also beat Shawn Smith & Grady Petterson his freshman year. Both 2x ers and both seniors that year.

To be fair the loss of control should have been called to send the match into overtime to let the wrestlers decide the winner but the 2 was called which ended the match. 2x champ (9 and 11) 2nd (12) and a 3rd (10); quite the career if you ask me.
Oh, it was an incredible career, no doubt about it.
jpizar83 - not trying to knock metzker at all, but didn't Brad Cooper beat him and the other cooper pretty handily at state duals that year? Or at some point in that season? I mention it because even though metzker was awesome, Brad was better that year.
Burroughs might be worth mentioning considering that he only went on to win senior nationals that year, and is currently the #1 ranked 157 pounder in Division 1.
yeah he got third at naia nationals, but if im not mistake and please let me know if i am, but wasn't that behind cooper and didnt cooper tech or major dec. murton in C.U. vs. U.C. dual?

I think that was Jairus Murton, not Jacob, that Cooper beat.
I think it is Jacob got 3rd at Nats, and Jarius got schooled by Cooper. I always felt Jacob was a lot better then Jarius. Both were great wrestlers though.
sorry wrong murton...

i have to agree....both were great but i think jacob was alittle better all around. cant see what he does in naia in a year or two..
Does anyone know why Jacob didn't wrestle D-1? I remember him my eigth grade year he was a stud in a half I'm sure he could have been quite successful on that level.
From what I have been hearing his wrestling days may be over completely. I know he didnt wrestle the 1st half of this year with a injury I believe. I havn't been seeing him in any of there results. Someone posted the Murtons are helping out with Lawrence County now. Anyone know for sure?
yeah i know for sure they are helping out with the team, but i dont know for what reasons. and i know nothing about his injuries.

I don't know if Brad Cooper and Metzker ever wrestled, it would have been on hell of a match, the two best wrestlers one weight class apart. I agree with you I think Brad was a little better though. I know for sure that Metzker beat Scott Cooper from LaRue at state duals pretty bad their senior years and then Scott won in the state finals.
So what did Murton place at the beast and senior nationals. It might have already been posted, but I couldn't find it thanks.

Check your records again. They didn't wrestle at duals that year. The match where Metzker beat Scott was in early december that year. Scott's loss at state duals was against Simon Kenton's Brad Cooper.
Well he still beat him pretty good, something like 10-1. If they had wrestled ten times I would bet Metzker would win eight, definitely the better wrestler.

Yeah, but who walked away from the podium with the gold. In the end, that is what counts.
I'm not denying that, Cooper won when it counted. Metzker was just the better wrestler.

Every year there is a wrestler who wins state that isn't the "best". He is just the best that day.
We can argue all day about who the better wrestler was. For that matter, I can claim I was the best wrestler in the state at my weight class at least my last two seasons, if not 3. But that opinion doesn't do much for me. What counts and gets recorded in the books is the guy who gets his hand raised in Frankfort.
I try to tell myself that as well. I think it helps me sleep better at night. :-DWe can argue all day about who the better wrestler was. He wasn't good enough!
Hear is a trivia question for you. Who beat Brad Cooper and Luke Metzger in 2002?

I am going to guess here.... Josh Boggs?

I would have to disagree.

ME from the depths of the unknown the only wrestler to ever represent his school as the only wrestler on the team period. Thats gotta be good for something. Wrestling and trainning by your self for two months and getting top 5 in state...that dosent happen too often. When I say the only wrestler for the school I literally mean I had not one teamate. Thats fun trainning.LOL :-P

Not sure if you are him, doubt you are..but in 1987 a wrestler named Paul Brewer was the only wrestler for his team - Oneida Baptist that year. He was pretty good...not sure where he placed. But he didn't have a team mate. That had to suck. That is impressive though.
A HWT everyone is forgetting about is Ryan Putoff (sp?) from Conner. That kid was a terror in the mid 90's at HWT. Fast for his size, stronger then anyone in his weight class maybe pound for pound in the state, and was pretty technical for a HWT. His Jr. year he came down w/ mono and could not wrestle in the state tournament, and his sr. year well he walked through the tournament. Just throwing it out there im sure some one can vouch for me.

When did the state tournament move from Atherton to Frankfort?
Yeah, I was for sure Gene Polka of Ft Knox was gonna win it that year.
1995? :?
The only person who beat Metzger in 02, at least in state, was Boggs (state duals in OT, btw Metzger won in OT in the state semis) so it would have to be him. But when did Boggs and Cooper wrestle? dual, NKy tourney, off-season tourney?
Dave Barnes has to be mention on this team somewhere.
He was 1988 State Champ and MOW. He also was an NCAA D1 All-American, placing 8th at the 1992 NCAAs.
