Awesome coverage!

Has Nky received any print yet this year?

I know they use to have a pre-season team summary, but I don't remember seeing it last year or this year.

SHEPHERDSVILLE - Success breeds success.

That is definitely on the mind of Bullitt Central wrestling coach Josh Durham as his Cougar team goes after an unprecedented third straight regional wrestling championship this season.

A year ago, the Cougars accomplished the feat with wrestlers in just 12 of the 14 weight classes. Now, Durham has 29 wrestlers out for the team and he certainly expects to fill each weight class this winter.

Not all of the weight classes will be filled by veterans, but there are eight wrestlers back in the program who competed in the regional last year.

"I'm thrilled," Durham said of the increased participation this winter. "I think part of it is word of mouth. Some just wanted to give it a try. I think the success has helped also. The prospect to come out and compete for a team that could win a regional title is important."

Bullitt Central had a few more wrestlers when the season started a year ago, but lost some for various reasons over the four-month season. To keep more wrestlers out this year, Durham will put some of the younger wrestlers in a regional junior-varsity meet as well as a JV state meet.

There will be a few wrestlers that will thin themselves out, but the numbers are encouraging for the long-term success of the program which is entering its fifth-season of existence and the third under Durham.

"I hope to have 20, solid, dedicated wrestlers," the coach said.

Obviously, Bullitt Central is thinking three-peat with the return of some of their top wrestlers as well as having a full squad.

"It is the goal," Durham said with an emphasis on "the". "The problem is that I have a lot of new wrestlers in the varsity line-up.

"My seniors want it and will work for it," the coach added. "It won't be as easy as the last two years and it wasn't easy the last two years. We'll have to step it up."

Bullitt Central could well be the site of the regional meet this year. Western is next in the rotation to host that meet, but there is a question if they will even field a team this year. If not, the meet would fall to Bullitt Central which is scheduled to host it next year.

Heading into the first week of the season, which will be highlighted by the first annual Bullitt Tooth Tournament on Saturday at Bullitt Central, Durham has a number of different options in most of the weight classes.

The top returner in the lower classes is senior James Badgett who finished seventh in the 103-pound division a year ago, a spot higher than he finished as a sophomore. At this point, Badgett will start the season at 112-pounds, but he could still get back down to 103 pounds.

"He wants to be better than last year in state," Durham said. "I'm not real sure where he is aiming. He wants better than seventh."

Badgett started last year up a class before moving back to 103 in the middle of the season.

"He's still eligible for 103," his coach said. "He's 109 right now. I think he'll do fine at 112. He won't have to cut weight and he'll be stronger and healthier. It's his senior year. I'll let him make that decision.

"He's working a lot harder," Durham added. "He knows this is his last year."

If Badgett stays at 112, then Durham will insert sophomore Preston Glass into the 103-pound class. Unlike a year ago, when the Cougars didn't have many small wrestlers, Durham has four wrestlers who could compete in the two smallest groups.

Moving up the ladder, first-year senior Justin Clark is penciled in at 119-pounds while freshmen Randall Daniel, another new wrestler, will compete at 125-pounds.

Bullitt Central has experience at 130-pounds with the return of Tony Tinnell who competed in the regional last year and should contend for a title. Another inexperienced wrestler is junior Patrick Underwood who will compete at 135-pounds.

One of the six football players who will compete for the wrestling team this winter will be junior Akeem Bennett at 140-pounds. Bennett wrestled a year ago, but there was a log-jam at his weight level and he could not fit into the team's regional plans. Still, Durham is expecting big things from Bennett this winter.

Senior Michael Chaney will be a strong wrestler at 145-pounds as he has been to the state meet each of the past two years.

Move up two weight classes could be senior Justin Walls who will go at 152-pounds this season. He started at Bullitt Central at 112-pounds and then was at 135-pounds for the next two seasons. He could wrestle at 152- or 145-pounds this season.

The middle weight classes also include junior Dylan Rutledge at 160-pounds. He wrestled dome at the JV level a year ago.

One of the area's best wrestlers is junior Jeremiah Walls who will compete at 171-pounds to start the season. He has been to the state meet each of the past two seasons and just missed medaling a year ago. He could drop down to 160-pounds.

In the bigger classes, Corey Allen, a senior, returns at 189-pounds while sophomore Dalton Hook, another football player, will wrestle at 215-pounds.

The heavyweight will be sophomore Larry Brown who advanced to the state meet a year ago.

Durham will also be looking at some point this season to get some action for Eric Abbott at 135- or 140-pounds as well as for Jarett Jetter at 215-pounds.

"For a lot of the new guys, there are people underneath them who could step up and take their varsity spot," Durham noted.

While wrestling is important for most of the team, it is really a four-month sport for most of them. There is no AAU summer circuit like for basketball players.

"We work on the theory that it's not the time you work, but the time you put into that work," Durham said. "I will say they have been very serious about working hard every day."

Bullitt Central has a busy schedule this year, but once again there is very little action at home. The only matches in the Cougars gym will be the Bullitt Tooth Tourney this Saturday. The only other home match is set for Jan. 30 when Pleasure Ridge Park, Meade County and Southern will be at Bullitt Central.

The regional tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 with the state championships the next week in Frankfort.

Mat Hawks must overcome inexperience in region meet

This season for the LaRue County Mat Hawks promises to be quite different than any season experienced by head coach Gary Canter. Previous teams have sported wrestlers who were older and experienced to inexperienced, but older in age. Never before has he started a season with a knowledgeable, but inexperienced and young team like this year.

Plenty of contenders

SK, Campbell offer challenge to Ryle

By Terry Boehmker

Post staff reporter

Ryle's three-year reign as 6th Region wrestling champion could be in jeopardy this season, according to coach Tim Ruschell.

Even though his team was voted No. 1 in a preseason poll of local coaches, Ruschell expects the regional tournament to be "a dogfight" because Simon Kenton and Campbell County also have talented lineups.

"This will be a very interesting regional," Ruschell said, "because the top three teams are all in the hunt for the title."

The regional tournament is two months away, but local teams will get an early idea of how they stack up at the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Duals Tournament on Dec. 14-15 at Dixie Heights.

Ryle won last year's conference tournament with a 7-0 record in dual matches and went on to win the regional tournament, but the Raiders lost seven of the 14 starters on that team to graduation.

Ryle's top returning seniors are defending state champions Bryan Peace at 140 pounds and Mason Reid at 171 pounds.

Peace was voted Wrestler of the Year by local coaches after finishing the season with a 51-1 record. Reid was close behind at 46-2.

Ryle's other returning state qualifiers are sophomores Michael Osborne (112) and Zack Rowland (130), juniors Will Hogben (189) and Jacob Bradford (215) and senior Will Gilliland (145).

It will be up to them and the seven newcomers in the starting lineup to extend the Raiders' string of regional titles.

"Don't count the Ryle wrestlers out," Ruschell said. "We've got some kids who have worked hard in the off-season that could make some noise."

Here's a look at the other wrestling teams in Northern Kentucky listed according to the voting points they received in the pre-season coaches poll:

2. SIMON KENTON - The Pioneers have the potential to be one of the top teams in the state with eight returning starters leading the way.

Juniors Robbie Vaughn and Stephen Norbury won regional weight class titles last year and three of their teammates - Ben Winkler, Matt Neal and Jordan Wilson - were second-place finishers.

The other Pioneers looking for a return trip to the state tournament are Korey Belew, Ryan Vaughn and Tony Turner.

"If the (vacant) weight classes get filled with the right wrestlers, we will match up with any team in the state," said coach Jim Wilbers.

3. CAMPBELL COUNTY - All five of the Campbell County wrestlers who won regional championships last season are back in the lineup.

The winner's list includes seniors Talor Deinlein, Thomas Brownfield, Kyle Griffith and Billy Fuller and sophomore Korey Shotwell.

The other returning state qualifier on coach Mike Bankemper's roster is junior Caleb Schneider.

4. SCOTT - The Eagles have five returning state qualifiers on the roster with seniors Gabe Supe and Justin Miley heading the list.

"Both of them have been in exceptional weight classes and competed against some of the best in the state," said coach Clinton Bell. "With that experience they should be able to cap off their careers with a state placing."

The coach also expects senior Gary Robbins, junior Evan Holten and sophomore Stephen Supe to make it back to the state tournament in February.

5. CONNER - Wayne Badida enters his 38th season as head coach of the Cougars with experienced wrestlers in eight weight classes.

The returning state qualifiers are seniors Ryan Dillon and Matt O'Bryan, who have been on the varsity roster since they were freshmen.

The other Conner wrestlers who placed in last year's regional tournament are senior Wil Cole and sophomore T.J. Bates.

6. NEWPORT - With more than 30 wrestlers on the roster, coach Jeff Middleton expects to put a full team on the mats this season.

The team leader is junior Jake Ilg, who is moving up to the 215 weight class after posting a 38-6 record and earning a berth in the state tournament at 189 last season.

Sophomores Josh Hale and Nathan Ilg are the Wildcats' other returning state qualifiers.

7. DIXIE HEIGHTS - The Colonels' only returning state qualifiers - Stephen Benson and Tony Heber - are switching weight classes this season.

Benson is moving up to 215 pounds and Heber is dropping to 189, but the seniors still give coach Ken Simmons a good back-to-back scoring combination.

Dixie's other varsity veterans are senior Dylan Curl and junior Joe Gronefeld. The rest are newcomers in the lineup, including four freshmen.

8. HOLMES - Coach Ken Bachman doesn't have enough wrestlers to fill every weight class, but he expects four varsity letter-winners to score points for the Bulldogs.

The veterans are junior D.J. Cooper and sophomores J.J. Thompson, Brandon Wren and Alex Dailey.

Bachman is glad to see Wren back in the lineup. He was sidelined by a neck injury last season after placing fifth in the 2006 regional tournament.

9. BOONE COUNTY - The Rebels return to varsity competition this season with a roster full of newcomers to the sport.

"They have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but very little experience," said coach Mick Raney.

Raney said the ones who have shown the most promise are senior Bobby Seilhammer, juniors Jordan and Justin Bernard and freshman Tyler Gies.

LaRue County Mat Hawks headed into Oldham County, the team realized they had something to prove to the rest of the state. In the end, the youthful Mat Hawks left Oldham County with the 2007 Super Dual title leaving fifth-ranked Woodford, eighth-ranked Seneca, and ninth-ranked Simon Kenton fighting for second through fourth places.

Something to prove, this was the cry of the team the week before the super duals. Each day after practice seniors Lucas Carman and Matt Miller would gather the team in the locker room and one would holler,

After a two-year absence, Bullitt Central was back hosting a major wrestling tournament as 16-teams converged on the school on Saturday for the Bullitt Tooth Wrestling Tournament.

(For two seasons when the program was getting off the ground, the school hosted the Sharkbait Tournament, but after a coaching change didn't have an event for two years.)

The final count showed Bullitt Central with three individual titles as senior Justin Walls won at 152 pounds while junior Jeremiah Walls was the victor at 171-pounds. Senior James Badgett was the champion at 112-pounds.

Raider twosome ready to rumble

State champions Peace, Reid win divisions, helping Ryle finish third

BY ADAM BAUM | [email protected]

There were whispers throughout the crowd in Ryle's gymnasium Saturday night because Mason Reid and Bryan Peace were putting on a show.

Ryle's two defending state champions didn't disappoint at the Raider Rumble. Peace (140 pounds) and Reid (171) won their divisions, helping Ryle to a third-place finish as a team.

Grundy took first place, followed by defending state champion Union County. Ten Ryle wrestlers placed either first or second.

Peace pinned three of his opponents and won major decisions in his first match and in the championship match, beating Matt Miller of LaRue County (19-10).

Peace is considerably calm before his matches, probably because he's been in the hierarchy of Kentucky wrestling since he was in the eighth grade. Peace placed sixth in state as an eighth-grader, fourth as a freshman, second as a sophomore and first as a junior.

"I don't try and pump myself up before a match," said Peace.

"I try to remain calm and relaxed, but at the same time build some intensity and just focus on what I need to do."

Reid managed to pin all five of his opponents, but none more exciting than his championship match.

Around 40 seconds into the match, Reid lifted Louisville Trinity's Brad Hitchings into the air and slammed him on the mat.

Reid secured Hitchings for the pin just 50 seconds into the match.

"I try not to think about the pressure of being the reigning state champ," said Reid. "I just go out there and wrestle each match as if I were unranked."

Reid has a somewhat different approach than Peace before the match. he can be seen listening to music and jumping around to get ready for his match.

"I don't think too much about the match before I go out there. I just relax and go with the flow," Reid said.

Peace's "quiet intensity" makes for an entertaining match.

"Reid and Peace are at a different level than most of the guys that wrestle," said Ryle coach Tim Ruschell. "If everything stays the same, I don't see anybody beating them in state."

Peace and Reid will wrestle next weekend in a national tournament with the area's best wrestlers.

Neither wrestler has committed to a college yet, but they are hoping to attract some schools with solid performances, Peace said.

Ryle senior Will Hogben suffered a tough loss in his championship match to Ryan Houchens of South Oldham. Hogben placed seventh at state last season.

Overall, Ruschell was pleased with his team's performance.

"Grundy is a tough team and so is Union County, but we will continue to get better," he said.

"The big thing is staying busy. We want a lot of mat time so we have that experience at the end of the season."

Lakota West's Mike Baurtook home first place in the 285-pound division, beating Shaun Smith from Winton Woods.

Winton Woods' Joe Booker won the 152-pound division by pinning Conner Coyle of Ryle at the 1:37 mark.

Harrison wrestlers compete in Tates Creek Duals

By Joey Lewis, sports writer

The Harrison County Thorobred wrestling team traveled last Saturday to compete in its first match of the season, the Tates Creek Duals. The Breds, working with a roster that is incomplete due to the long play-off run by the football team, had a long, difficult day.

?We made a very poor showing and there?s really no blame on anyone but myself,? said Coach Russ Riegel. ?This tournament was a little early for us, overlapping football, and we were just plain not ready mentally or physically. We don?t have a full team without our football players, but some of our new kids did very well and some of our veterans had a terrible day. We just couldn?t get on track and let it get away from us.?

The Breds were able to win their first match against Lawrence County with a score of 48-24. After that, they fell in four consecutive matches

to Campbell County 51-21,

Connor 41-33,

Union County (ranked pre-season No. 1 in the state) 76-0,

and North Hardin 45-33.

?We could have and should have come away 4-1 and maybe lost to Union,? said Riegel.

Individual Harrison County scores by class were:

103 lbs. none;

112 lbs. Andy Lenz 3-2;

119 lbs. none;

125 lbs. none;

130 lbs. Cody Ward 4-1;

135 lbs. Trevor Maxwell 1-0;

135 lbs. Caleb Berry 4-1;

140 lbs. Chris Brunker 2-3;

145 lbs. Beau Sanders 4-1;

152 lbs. Seth Coy 1-3;

160 lbs. Bob Barkley 0-3; Charles Ammerman 1-0;

171 lbs. Brandon Barnett 1-0;

189 lbs. Brett Williams 1-2;

215 lbs. Itai Bear 2-3;

285 lbs. (heavyweight) Dan Kiskaden 2-0.

?This was just a tough day,? said Riegel. ?But the question is did we learn anything? And you can bet that we did. When we become a team and get our full team assembled, we?ll be ok!?

The Breds? wrestlers were scheduled to be in action again last night hosting Dixie Heights on the Hilltop.

Their next action will be on Saturday as they travel to the Nelson County Duals.

Mat Hawks face battle to retain region dominance

It has been a decade since the LaRue County Mat Hawks have lost a regional dual. It has been a decade since the Hawks have not been a #1 seed for the Dual State Championships. It has been a decade since the Hawks have not been the favorites heading into the season to capture a regional championship. All that has changed this year for the Hawks and this Friday the Hawks are the underdogs as they host John Hardin at 7:30 p.m. for a regional dual.

Diante Wright attempts to pin a Calloway wrestler before time ran out on Thursday night's rumble

Braves charged on without three starters

Jerritt Hovey / Advocate Sports Editor

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Union County Braves defeated Calloway County last Thursday night with a victory of 78-0. Pinning ten out of their 14 weight divisions, the Braves made sure that they walked away with the win.

The following Saturday, the Braves traveled to Ryle High School in Boone County for their Ryle Raider Rumble. There were 15 teams from the Tri-State area and while missing three key wrestlers, Jake Wempe, Diante Wright and Levi Griggs, to ACT testing, the Braves were still able to come in second at the tournament. First place went to Grundy with a score of 288.5. Union's score was 277, while Ryle's was 242 and South Dearborn was 224.

Union County's individual scores were Neal Reburn (103) in seventh, Jarvis Elam (112) second, Aaron Carr (119) fifth, Matt Young (125) third, Caleb Ervin (130) second, Luke Ervin (135) second, Isaac Ervin (145) first, Josh Willet (152) fourth, Mitch Ervin (160) first, Jarrod Burke (171) fourth, Isaac Thomas (112) seventh and Tim McKenney (189) placing eighth.

During the Raider Rumble, there were three really key matches that stood out to Coach Walls. The first match was that of Mitch Ervin. Ervin was able to pin Josh McCowen, a wrestler from Grundy, and placed first. Another key match was between Caleb Ervin and Louisville Trinity student, Grant Ohlmann. Ohlmann is the Power Lifter Champion at Louisville Trinity.

The last key match that Coach Walls was impressed with was not a winner but was still a good match nonetheless. It was between Aaron Carr and Jeremy Hurley. Hurley, another student from Grundy, is ranked number one in Virginia as an All-American wrestler.

"Being down three starters and still coming in second is not bad," Coach Walls said. "Once we get those starters back, we'll be a force to reckon with. I like to tell the boys that it's not a sprint, it's a marathon."

The Braves will travel to Harrison this Friday and Saturday for the 10-Team Duals. Teams hosted at the Dual will be Forest Park, Southridge, South Spencer, Heritage Hills, Reitz, Tell City, Memorial, Harrison, Louisville Trinity and Union County. The Duals will begin at 5 p.m. Friday night and 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Mat Cats win at Bourbon, struggle at Nelson duals

By Staff Reports

The Anderson County Bearcat wrestling team recorded a nice win at Bourbon County last Wednesday but were overmatched in four of five matches Saturday at the Nelson County duals.

Wednesday, Anderson defeated Bourbon County 57-24 despite not having any wrestlers in the 103- and 130-pound weight classes. Not having a competitor in a weight class hurts in team scoring as the match is recorded as a fall, or six points for the opponent.

Anderson's Ben Joseph (119 pounds), Tom McNaughton (171) Marcus White (189) and Zach Cotton (285) all recorded pins.

Saturday, the Bearcats fell to four very strong programs but managed a tie against Bullitt Central, a program that is a defending regional champion.

Christian County defeated the Bearcats 56-24 and Harrison County, ranked 13th in the state coaches' poll, notched a 55-24 win over the Bearcats before the Bullitt Central match, which ended in a 42-42 tie. Louisville St. Xavier put up a 60-24 win over the Bearcats while North Oldham, one of the budding programs statewide, defeated the Bearcats 54-27.

Individually, Joseph and White had an outstanding day on the mat, garnering 5 victories in 5 tries. White pinned 2 opponents, while Joseph had one fall. Cotton also had a very good day, picking up 4 wins with 2 pins. Corey Vincent (125), Devin Jett (135) and McNaughton all had 3 wins with 2 pins. Other Anderson wrestlers with at least one pin on the day were Hunter Lilly at 112 pounds and Ricky Kaelin at 140.

Harrison wrestlers sweep their competition

20071212-113048-081-081006.jpg

Photo by Donald Richie -- Mike Cordray tries to get in a good position against his Western Hills opponent last Wednesday in the Wrestling Breds home opener. Leading8-2 with just over three minutes in the match, Cordray secured the win by a fall.

By Joey Lewis, sports writer

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, the Harrison County Thorobred wrestlers hosted their first home meet of the young wrestling season and their first tri-meet in eight years in the Southside Elementary gym.

The Breds came away from the evening with two wins, defeating both Dixie Heights and Western Hills.

?That?s a good way to start the season, two wins in one night,? said Breds? Coach Russ Riegel.

In the first match, Dixie Heights defeated Western Hills by a score of 36-24.

The second match of the meet was a 46-24 win over Dixie Heights for the Breds.

Senior co-captain Josh Ashbrook, who was in the Breds? line-up for the first time this year due to the extended football season, performed very well in his first match.

Ashbrook scored two take-downs and a near fall for a 6-1 lead in the first period against Dixie Heights. A take-down by Ashbrook in the second period increased the lead to 8-1 heading into the third period. He scored five more points for a 13-3 major decision worth four team points.

In the fourth period, the Breds? took the lead and the match was never in doubt.

To end the match Itai Bear, wrestling in the 215 lbs. division, lost by a fall in 0:19. Dan Kiskaden, weighing-in at 200 lbs. but wrestling in the heavy-weight division against the 230 lbs. 15th-ranked wrestler in the state, lost by a fall in 1:16.

The second match for the Breds was an important match. It served as the preliminary round match for the Region 7 Super Duals to be held at Dunbar High School on Dec. 20 and 21.

Harrison County came away with a big 77-24 victory over Western Hills.

In the first period, Harrison?s Mike Cordray, who was in the line-up for the first time, won a hard-fought match by a fall in 3:21. Cordray was leading 8-2 at the time with four points coming just before the fall.

In the second period, Breds? freshman Brandon Barnett defeated KHSAA ranked wrestler Josh Bell by a fall in 5:05 in his second match of the year.

?Brandon should be one of our studs during the next three years,? said Riegel.

In the third period, the Breds? Kiskaden again found himself facing a larger heavy-weight wrestler in Western Hills? 265 lbs. Jacob Bowles. This time Kiskaden pinned Bowles for the win in 3:49.

On Saturday, the Breds were on the road for the Nelson County Duals, where they came away with a 5-0 record on the day.

In their first match, the Breds? defeated Bullitt County by a 46-24 score.

Harrison?s Andy Lenz faced the No. 7 ranked James Badgett in the match. Lenz started off slow but got two take-downs in the first period and put his opponent on his back in the second. In the third period, Lenz again put Badgett on his back, earning a major decision and a 13-4 lead.

Ashbrook was called on in the match to defeat a fourth-ranked wrestler in Bullitt?s Jeremy Walls. He did just that in what proved to be a very good match for spectators, scoring two near falls in the third period for a 4-0 lead.

Barnett won for the Breds in both the 171 lbs and 189 lbs spots.

?This match was a great morale builder for the next four,? said Riegel.

In the second match of the day, the Breds? beat Anderson County by a score of 50-30.

The highlight of the match was a win by a fall for Ashbrook in 0:29 that proved to be the fastest fall of the meet.

The Breds? third match was a 40-27 win over Christian County.

Harrison gave up one forfeit in the 285 lbs. class to lose six points and lost one decision in overtime and lost another by a fall on the mat.

Senior co-captain Beau Sanders got the meet?s fastest fall with a time of 0:32.

Barnett moved up to 189 lbs. class to win with a fall in 1:44.

In the fourth match of the day, the Breds came away with another win, this time a 61-18 margin over Franklin County.

Barnett picked up another win in a close 5-2 match against Franklin.

In the fifth and final match-up for the Breds, they defeated hosts Nelson County by a 40-30 score.

Harrison County was put at a disadvantage by giving up 18 points in forfeits while Franklin County did not have to forfeit in the match.

The team showed up to big in the first period, however, five falls recorded by Lenz, Trevor Maxwell, Chris Brunker, Seth Coy and Bob Barkley for 30 Harrison County points.

Ashbrook and Sanders both overcame fatigue to win their decisions. Ashbrook won 5-0 and Sanders won 7-4, both taking the full six minutes to get their victories.

?They both have to work to be the best,? said Riegel. ?They both realize what it will take to be the champion.?

Harrison County?s Lenz was named the school?s Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Sanders has led the team so far this season, putting up an 11-1 record. Lenz is close with a 10-2 mark on the season. Caleb Berry has posted a 9-3 record for the Breds and Ashbrook and Barnett are both 7-0 on the season.

Harrison County?s current season record is 8-4.

The Breds were scheduled to return to the mats last night as they traveled to meet Covington Holmes and Simon Kenton.

They will again be in action Saturday, taking to the road to participate in the Johnson Central Duals.

Campbell County wins NKAC duals: Camels pay back Ryle, which also advances

BY ADAM BAUM | [email protected]

Campbell County won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference duals Saturday, beating Ryle in the finals 49-21.

The two-day tournament was hosted by Dixie Heights and crowned Campbell County as the top-team in the NKAC.

It also means that Campbell County and Ryle will represent the NKAC in the state tournament duals.

The Camels had seven wrestlers finish first and five others finish in the top four.

Fans present for the final match between Ryle and Campbell County described it as, "The loudest and most exciting match of the tournament," and they were right.

Both teams went back and forth early on, trading victories, but soon enough Campbell County took control.

Possibly the most exciting match was between Campbell County senior Talon Deinlein and Ryle's Matt Aylor in the 130-pound weight class. The match was close throughout, but Aylor took the lead in the third period 4-3. With around ten seconds left, and the score still 4-3, Deinlein threw Aylor onto his back and recorded five points of back-exposure to win the decision 8-4.

Deinlein injured his ribs earlier in the day, but fought through the pain for his teammates

"I just pulled out a throw and thought whatever happens, happens," said Deinlein. "That was a risk I was willing to take."

Deinlein placed third in his weight class.

Campbell County and Ryle wrestled head-to-head three weeks ago, and Ryle came away with the victory.

"They thumped us pretty good," said Campbell County coach Mike Bankemper. "The fact that we came back after getting beat and made those improvements is important to our success as a team."

Aylor and Deinlein wrestled in that match three weeks ago and Aylor won a close decision. "You have to want it, and you can't be afraid to lose," said Deinlein. "Just keep your head up, don't get down on yourself and keep at it no matter what."

The standout wrestler for Ryle was junior Will Hogben.

Hogben, eighth at state as a sophomore last season, finished second in the 189-pound weight class Saturday, winning seven of his eight matches.

"We wanted to win our conference," said Hogben. "I have some great competitors in my weight class, and that helps me get ready for the state tournament."

The Campbell County first-place finishers had their way with the field, winning 50 matches and only losing one.

Those finishing first were: seniors Jeff Weckbach (125), Toby Liang (145), Thomas Brownfield (171) and Billy Fuller (285), with junior Caleb Schneider (119) and sophomores Korey Shotwell (140) and Jacob Lee (160).

Scott and Simon Kenton both wrestled well.

Scott wrestled eight matches and won six of them, while Simon Kenton won five of its eight matches. Scott beat Simon Kenton 36-35 to finish third out of the nine teams.

Sanders becomes member of elite Harrison wrestlers' Bi-Centennial Club

Coming into the 2007-2008 wrestling season, Harrison County senior and wrestling co-captain Beau Sanders was only 16 wins shy of taking his place in the 200-win club of HCHS wrestling.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, in the third round of the Johnson Central Duals, Sanders defeated his Sheldon Clark opponent with a fall in 0:35 to grab victory number 16 on the season and number 200 for his career.

Sanders started his wrestling career in the sixth grade, posting a 9-2 record in middle school matches.

In seventh grade, weighing in at 103 lbs, Sanders posted a 16-14 varsity record and competed in regionals. In eighth grade, Sanders went to state competition for the first time after a 39-12 season.

In high school, Sanders was 38-9 as a freshman, 40-9 as a sophomore, and an amazing 51-5 as a junior.

Sanders has returned to represent the Breds in state competition every season, placing fourth as a sophomore and second as a junior.

After the victory on Saturday, the meet was paused and an announcement was made. Sanders received a plaque acknowledging his outstanding achievement.

Sanders joins fellow 2007-2008 co-captain and senior Josh Ashbrook in the Bi-Centennial Club.

Breds' grapplers picking up wins and confidence

By Joey Lewis, sports writer

On Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Harrison County wrestling team traveled to Covington Holmes to participate in a tri-match with Holmes and Simon Kenton.

The Breds were hurt by forfeits in their first match of the evening against Simon Kenton, giving up 30 points before the round began. The match ended with 30 points for Harrison County and 42 points for Simon Kenton.

Harrison freshman Brandon Barnett, weighing in at 164 lbs, was bumped up to wrestle in the 189 lbs weight class.

In the first period, Barnett jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a take down.

The Simon Kenton wrestler scored a reversal to tie the match at 2-2. Barnett then scored a two-point near fall, but had a penalty point assessed on the pinning combination, for a 4-3 advantage.

With only eight seconds remaining in the second period, the Simon Kenton wrestler scored a reversal for a 5-4 lead. Barnett then took the bottom position to attempt to get his two-point reversal, but was pinned 48 seconds into the third period.

?There was no question in my mind that Brandon got the fall in the second,? said Breds? coach Russ Riegel. ?But it was not to be. I was proud of the job our kids did on the mat, and I really couldn?t ask for more.?

Andy Lenz won by a fall in 0:59, Trevor Maxwell won by a fall in 3:10, Caleb Berry won by decision 12-6, Beau Sanders won by decision 6-2, Josh Ashbrook won by a fall in 0:48, and Bobby Barkley won by a fall in 0:51.

The second match of the evening was a lopsided victory for the Breds over a Holmes team badly hampered by injury and illness. The score was Harrison County 67 and Holmes 18.

The Breds? Lenz was moved up to the 119 lbs weight class to face Holmes? best man, who was ranked 17th at the time.

Lenz got a two-point take down and a two-point near fall for a 4-0 lead after the first period. Lenz remained on his game in the second round, battling to keep the 4-0 lead going into the third period.

From the standing neutral position, Lenz scored a take down in the third and ended the match 6-0.

The Breds? Ashbrook remained undefeated, getting a first round fall in 1:24.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, the Breds took a long bus ride to eastern Kentucky to wrestle in a round robin team tournament hosted by Johnson Central. Tates Creek, Powell Valley (Virginia), Sheldon Clark, Lawrence County, Perry Central and Johnson Central joined the Breds in the contest.

Tates Creek emerged with the tournament victory, although they did not face the Breds. The two teams did not meet due to a prior agreement to not meet head to head prior to upcoming Region 7 duals next weekend.

Harrison County had a bye in the first round, and picked up a big 60-24 win over Perry Central in the second round.

Lenz won the 112 lbs weight class by a fall in 0:58, in the middle of two Harrison County forfeits.

Ward, Maxwell, Berry, Chris Brunker, Sanders, Ashbrook, Mike Cordray, Barnett and Barkley came up with seven falls and two forfeits to lead the Breds to the win. Berry scored the tournament?s fastest fall in this match, beating his opponent in 0:18.

Johnson Central defeated the Breds by a score of 50-27 in the Breds? second match of the day, bumping up their two best wrestlers to beat Harrison?s Ward and Maxwell.

Ashbrook won by a 7-2 decision and Cordray followed with a fall in 0:42 to give the Breds? hope. Johnson Central proved to be too much, however.

In the day?s third match, the Breds defeated a highly ranked team from Sheldon Clark by a final score of 49-21. Going into the match, Harrison County was ranked 13th and Sheldon Clark was ranked 14th according to KHSAA tournament scoring.

The Breds? forfeited four matches, but won one back when Sheldon Clark was forced to forfeit the heavy-weight match.

Harrison County?s fourth match of the day was a 60 to 24 win over the team from Virginia, Powell Valley.

Lenz, Ward, Caleb and Coty Berry, Sanders, Ashbrook, Cordray, Eric Kiskaden and Barnett all took wins in the match.

The final contest of the day for the Breds was a rematch with Lawrence County. The Breds defeated Lawrence two weeks ago in the Tates Creek Duals by a score of 42-24.

This time around the addition of football players Coty Berry, Ashbrook, and Barnett to the line-up helped Harrison to a 66-18 win.

?I still have three football players who gave me their word they are coming out for wrestling,? said Riegel. ?You can see that could very easily mean the difference between and outstanding season versus a good season.?

The Breds came away from the day with several awards and medals.

The Fastest Fall trophy was awarded to Caleb Berry for a fall in 0:18.

First place medals were awarded to Sanders (5-0), Ashbrook (5-0), and Cordray (5-0).

Second place medals were awarded to Lenz (5-0), Maxwell (3-1), and Barnett (4-1).

A third place medal was awarded to Cody Ward (4-1) and a fourth place medal was awarded to Brunker (1-1).

Exhibition matches were wrestled between rounds and the Breds did very well in those. Casey Hill was 1-1, Kiskaden was 1-1, Coty Berry was 1-0, Seth Coy was 1-0, Brett Williams was 0-2, Justin Williams was 0-1, and Vince Whitt was 1-1.

The Breds will take to the mat next in the Region 7 Super Duals over the weekend of Dec. 21 and 22 at Dunbar High School. The teams that emerge in first and second place will represent Region 7 at the State Duals on Jan. 26, 2008.

Harrison County will face Woodford County in the first match beginning at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow night.

Isaacs perfect at regional duals

By News Staff Reports

Anderson County's wrestlers found where they stand with Region 2 Friday and Saturday at LaRue County High School. The Bearcats placed fifth among the eight regional teams competing in a dual meet. As expected, the Hardin County schools and the host school supplied the power of the region. Individually, however, Anderson got outstanding performances from Sammy Isaacs and Zach Cotton.

Isaacs, ranked third in the state at 145 pounds by Kentuckywrestling.com, was perfect in seven matches. Isaacs recorded four pins.

Cotton, a freshman, finished with five victories, all by pin, in seven bouts.

The Bearcats are without wrestlers in the 103- and 130-pound classes, meaning those bouts are automatically recorded as pins for the opposing team.

During the meet, John Hardin defeated LaRue County, handing the host school its first defeat by a regional foe in over 10 years.

Anderson County individual results (wins-losses-pins)

Q&A | Trinity's Brad Hitchings

Hitchings From Bob White

Wrestler Brad Hitchings compiled a 48-8 record as a freshman at Trinity, reaching the state tournament semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Pat Banks of LaRue County, then claiming third place. Having grown three inches and gained 20 pounds since last winter, according to coach Eddie Rudolph, the 6-foot Hitchings has moved up two weight classes to 171 pounds this season. He is one reason Trinity is considered a strong contender to win the 2008 state team title. Hitchings is 21-1 going into tomorrow's Central Hardin Tournament.. After that, he'll compete in the Mater Dei tourney in Evansville, Dec. 28-29 and in the Jefferson County tourney at Seneca the first weekend in January.

The Courier-Journal: How long have you been wrestling?

Brad Hitchings: I started in the third grade. I wrestled for Fern Creek Optimist and won the state in the eighth grade. That's the sole reason I'm that good today -- I started off so young. My dad started the Fern Creek Optimist program, and he started the Trinity Shamrock Wrestling Club.

The C-J: Why did you quit football, especially at a school that has won 18 state playoff titles?

Hitchings: I was a running back-linebacker at St. Gabriel and I played football as a freshman at Trinity, but it cut into a lot of the wrestling season. I feel really close to the guys on the wrestling team. That is my team.

The C-J: Did you surprise yourself with such an outstanding freshman season?

Hitchings: I kind of shocked myself. At State, I stepped it up and beat a guy who had beaten me during the regular season after I lost in the semifinals to Banks. I had to win one more match after that to put me in the battle for third and fourth place.

The C-J: What happened in the loss to Banks?

Hitchings: He was up by three points with only a few seconds left in the third period. I tried a desperation move, and I wound up on my back. He didn't pin me, though.

The C-J: You're No. 2 statewide at 171 pounds, ranking only behind defending state champion Mason Reid of Ryle, who pinned you in the first period this season. What was that match like?

Hitchings: I started off the match really good, but I put myself in a position where he really wanted me to be. I'll see him again at the state duals and at the state tournament.

The C-J: How did you fare in national competition during the offseason?

Hitchings: I finished second in the 16-and-younger class at the National AAU tournament at Charleston, W.Va.

The C-J: Has moving up two weight classes made it harder to win?

Hitchings: I put on a lot of weight, but that was the plan the whole summer. It's worked out well. I didn't want to fight my weight this year. I wanted to get a full growth spurt going.

The C-J: Trinity's team placed fifth at the 2006 state tourney and seventh at the '07 meet. Sophomore Myron Bradbury returns and is undefeated at 103, where he was the state runner-up to Seneca's Elliot Martin last season. What are the Shamrocks' chances to move up this winter?

Hitchings: We've got pretty much the same kids back. Myron is ranked No. 1 at 103 as Martin has moved up two weight classes, so we're better and we're ready.

Grapplers go 4-1 at Murray State

By TOBY BROWN, Times Sports Editor

In a 12-team field loaded with Kentucky schools, the lone Illinois and Indiana entries proved the creme of the crop at the Calloway County, Ky. Holiday Duals wrestling tournament over the weekend.

The event was held at Murray State University's Racer Arena Saturday. The 12 teams were divided into three pools. Coach Chris Courty's Carmi-White County Bulldogs went 3-0 to win Pool 1, while South Spencer, Ind. won Pool 2 and Caldwell County, Ky. took Pool 3.

The three top teams then met in a round-robin. CWC lost 49-27 to South Spencer, but defeated Caldwell County 45-31 to improve to 12-1 overall on the season.

In pool play, the Bulldogs downed Ft. Campbell, Ky. 60-22, trounced Hopkinsville, Ky. 65-15 and whipped University Heights Academy (located just north of Hopkinsville) 72-12.

Senior 112-pounder Paul Stanley went 5-0 on the day for Courty's team, as did senior Aaron Newman, who competed at 171 and 189 pounds. Senior Shane Sisco was 4-0 at 135.

In addition, Bulldog freshman 145-pounder Logan Rogers and senior Kevin Stucky (152/160) were each 4-1 in their respective weight classes, and juniors Wes Mick (125/130) and Jimmy Smith (152/160) each went 3-1.

Several of Courty's younger members got in some exhibition matches against varsity opponents. In the case of a forfeit, the grappler accepted the forfeit from the other team, then wrestled another opponent in an exhibition. In those scenarios, CWC's Trent Thompson was 2-2; Zach Templeton and Mason Siegel each 2-1; and Timmy Phillips, Patrick Holland and Koby Kisner each 1-2.

The Bulldogs were without sophomore 103-pounder Devin Wilson due to illness and senior Bobby Wolf recently suffered a broken leg and is out for the remainder of the season.

Other teams participating in Saturday's tournament were Paducah, Ky. Tilghman, Daviess County, Ky., Calloway County, Ky., Kenwood, Tenn., Henderson County, Ky. and Ohio County, Ky.

The Bulldog wrestlers will compete in the Herrin Duals on Friday (the tourney was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up a day).
