Impressive for both Quentin Wright and MAson Reid.

a good friend of mine was out there who is originally from KY.  In short, he said Peace had a tough 1st round match and got beat in the 3rd period, the kid finished 8th.  Reid wrestled good all the way through, even against the stud from PA, the match was better than the score.

On a side note, he said that there were at least 20-30 college coaches there, most from Division 1, and some had interest in them there Ky boys for 2 reasons, 1. they were good, 2. their grades were top notch. "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son"

Oh! he also said that you guys should get out of your little KY snowglobe of wrestling and start making a name for yourself, spend your time training instead of gossiping on this forum, and that your not as good as you think you are.

One last thing, he made a comment that the Officials of KY should spend a little time out here watching good officials make correct calls and that if KY officials were doing the Beast, they would still be wrestling today because of all the cautions, stupid stalling calls, and 12 second pin counts.

Don't take this personal, I am just the messenger.  He calls it the way he sees it.

sound like a challenge to me??

Sounds more like a good dose of reality for us.  Thanks for passing on the message.  I have to say that KY wrestling has come a long way but we have a ways to go.

I'm not sure what this means.  Are you trying to say that Ky officials call stalling to much?  And that KY takes to long on pin calls?

As a KY official I will agree a little and disagree more.  I'm not sure what the caution thing is about.  I would say that most KY officials don't call half of the cautions that are in the book, especially on bad starting positions.  I may agree a little on the pin calls.  I will speak for myself and say that when I am the one calling the pins, I will not slap the mat unless I really see the pin.  I don't assume that both shoulders are on the mat, I have to see it.  And I am not going to punish someone because I am too lazy to get into position and see the pin.  Bottom line, if I slap the mat you were stuck.  I think we are getting much better on stalling.  I admit I'm not the best at it, but I don't officiate every week, more like twice a year.  But I think overall we are starting to get kids off the hips and to stop clamming up on bottom.  Of course we have a long way to go, but I have seen a lot of improvement over the last couple of years.

I figured Kentucky officials didn't call stalling enough.

Hear is what he is saying and I agree.  Stalling gets called at the wrong times, inconsistent and the official ends up being the one determining the match.

cautions:  Ranger, they don't waste time with a 30 point Valvoline inspection before they blow the whistle in a referee position.  bottom man set, top mount, whistle.  sometimes before the top is actually set.

I don't think stalling is called at the right times.  In other words, consistency varies within the match itself, by official and at state the big boys are pressuring officials to call it more, which also takes them out of their element.

Congrats to Brian and Mason on attending and representing KY well at the Beast!

Congrats also go out to the whole Ryle program especially their coaches for helping their kids get to these type events.

Just getting to these caliber tournaments is an accomplishment for KY kids and to consistently attend "National Scale" events and perform well is a testament to the program and coaching at Ryle.

The state could use more coaches or programs to enable kids to attend big out of state events.

Who will be the first KY team to attend the Beast, Ironman, Woodford, Union, Ryle, Trinity? Are any of the coaches out there thinking on that level?

I agreee and disagree about the refereeing in KY compared to other states. I have seen good and bad all over, Im sure the refs at the Beast were some of the best in the area. Its hard to argue that theres not room for improvement, but I have a hard time knocking the refs because of the dedication they show towards the sport.

Your right eville dad, I seen both in and out of KY.

Given we have so few referee's, I'm surprised we don't have more ex-wrestlers trying to get experience, the money isn't that bad.

You either wrestle, coach or referee, but to complain and not be any of the three is wrong.

All those experienced dad's that argue from the slide line, that know all the rules and how and when top apply them are all welcome to get a card and sign up for the opportunity to make a change for the better. :-o

Mom are encouraged as-well. :-D

I could not agree more with this.  To me (not a referee at all) but it seems like refs in our state call stalling on the bottom man in cases where he's not really stalling, he's just being dominated.  In a lot of these cases it seems like a stale mate would be more appropriate.  I could be completely wrong here, but it seems like refs lean towards stalling on the bottom guy when it should be a stale mate.

Then refs allow kids on their feet to simply block off for an entire period before hitting a kid with a warning.  If a wrestler is just tying up and hanging on the head for more than 20-30 seconds...give him a warning at least and be consistent, 1st, 2nd, 3rd period...it shouldn't matter.

About the valvoline 30 pt inspection....that's a good one.  I agree with Ranger that the refs could be more strict on this, but really why would they want to?  I understand it's the rules...but it's not what should be emphasized.  I've noticed in college wrestling, those refs are very loose on that stuff.  It's more like what grapplehed is talking about...as soon as the top guy is close to position, blow the whistle.  It seems like those refs are not emphasizing small technicalities on starting positions.  They emphasize constant action.

I would love to take Woodford County to at least the Ironman, maybe even other top high school tournaments.  After all it can only make us better.  Other schools should be trying to get out of Kentucky, even if for only one or two tournaments.

Congrats to Mason Reid!!  He finished fifth after receiving a forfeit in his place match.

At least? What's this? A freshman won the 171 pound weight class from Monroeville OH. and beat three kids ranked in the top ten in the country. Ironman was a much tougher tournament!!!

Other schools should be trying to get out of Kentucky, even if for only one or two tournaments.

I have the answer as to why more KY schools do not.  $ $ $ $ $ $ $ and more $ $ $ $ $

grapplhed and plee - I think we have 2 very different situations here.  At the collegiate level or top high school level you shouldn't have to worry about those things.  Wrestlers in college or at the Ironman are well beyond having trouble lining up.  Although, I don't think it should just be ignored and allow someone to get an advantage.  On the other hand, as grappler mentioned before, we often have 1st year kids around the state that are competing on the varsity level.  And they line up in a variety of weird ways.  They need to be taught the proper way to line up.  And we can't assume the coaches will get the job done.  Besides, where do you draw the line.  Not enforcing the rules can be a slippery slope.  And the next thing you know a kid lines up with a leg in!  :-o
