JV State Eligibility

Topic ID: 3224 | 7 Posts

Has the criteria for JV State eligibility been finalized?

These are my suggestions.

1. Eighth graders must be a current member of a Varsity Team. I.E.- Joe Rupp (Tournament should not be flooded with Middle School wrestlers)

2. All freshman will be eligible, regardless of Varsity status or record.

3. Sophomores and Juniors will only be eligible if they were not State qualifiers in the previous season.

Have less than a fifty percent win record in Varsity matches(including exhibition).

4. No Seniors

When I wrestled in Tennessee, JV tournaments were open to Freshman and Sophomores only, no Junior or Senior were allowed.  I believe That Juniors should only be allowed if they are first year wrestlers and have a losing record.

i like everything about this except one thing wat if the kid is a jv and has wrestled only 1 or 2 varsity matches because your coach sent the jv team instead of varsity. He should still b allow to wrestle, but if hes wrestled a good 6 or 7 then thats understandable.

No, that thread does not definitively answer the question.

I still see a lot of speculation, leaving eligibility to the arbitrary interpretation of each coach or region.

There is no mention of middle school wrestlers who compete at the Varsity level, among many other unanswered questions.

Who has ultimate authority?  Who's calling the shots?  How can Ranger, who I know has no authority, say that all participants must qualifiy in a regional qualifier.

I have been asked to help run this tournament, but still can not get a definitive answer on anything.

we said 9-11 only. No middle school wrestlers at all allowed.

Also, if you qualified for state the previous year then you cannot participate.

Everyone else is welcome but yes its a coaches call. Someone may send someone who shouldn't be there. Some JV wrestlers are just a few points from filling the varsity spot on their team. If the kid is 9-11, didn't go to state last year but has placed in qrite a few tournaments this year then of course he doesn't belong in JV state.

I mean I got some kids that are wrestling varsity only because we have no one else. A few kids that have not won a single match. They are on the varsity team but there level of skill is JV.

Coaches know who should and shouldn't be allowed.

Also I think I've sent out plenty of emails to the coach serve list explaining the eligibility. If you are not a part of this email list you need to sign-up if you are a coach.

Coaches know who should and shouldn't be allowed.

I disagree, at the beginning of the season we had a rookie middle school tournament for first year wrestlers only , when I got there, I recognized half the kids from the previous year.

Same situation here, when participation guidelines are left to individual coaches, the rules will be stretched and manipulated.

Maybe we should have required no more then a certain number of Varsity matches or a win percentage less then --%. This is the first year. I just wanted to get it up and running. Very few coaches have actually given me any input. We will work on improving it after this year and hopefully more coaches will chime in. However some regions have already had their JV regionals so we can't change anything for this year.
