Fern Creek High School, with unbeatens Caleb Wood grabbing an individual title for the third straight year and John Wolsiefer taking a second straight crown, ruled the Jefferson County Tournament of Champions wrestling meet last night at Valley.
The Tigers piled up 2511/2 points to 229 for runner-up Trinity -- getting victories from Wood (16-0) at 119 pounds, Ben Barger (29-3) by forfeit at 145, Wolsiefer (30-0) at 152 and Dean Chaney (26-5) at 189. Seneca was third in the 23-school field with 185 points.
"It's awesome," Wolsiefer said about the team title. "I knew it would be tough, but I thought we could pull it off."
Wolsiefer, voted by coaches as the Most Valuable Wrestler, pinned Shandon Hooper of Seneca in 2:49 in the 152 final after winning at 145 last year. Wood is a junior. Barger, Wolsiefer and Chaney are sophomores.
"We'll be real tough the next couple of years," said Wolsiefer, who has 25 pins this season.
Added coach Jeff Hall: "We had our sights set on this after we finished second last year. I knew we had an opportunity. I just hoped the kids would respond, and they did. To a man, everybody did a great job."
Wood, the state champion at 112 last year, won this meet at 103 as a freshman and 112 in 2005. Will he move up to 125 next year?
"I'll see how my weight is," said Wood, who is ranked No. 1 in the state and defeated Seneca's Jon Chiu 8-2 in the 119 final.
Chaney, after seeing Trinity's Grant Laswell rally from a 4-2 deficit to tie it 4-4, scored on an escape in the final seconds for a 5-4 victory.
"Hard work in practice paid off at the end," Chaney said. "I had an idea he had tied it up because my coach was yelling at me. I knew I could get it. I felt confident."
Trinity and Eastern each won three weight classes.
The Shamrocks won with Dan Smith (29-3) at 103, Mike Bowlds (28-7) at 130 and Ben Case (30-4) at 135. Senior Mike Clark (12-0), the two-time defending heavyweight champion and last year's state champion, did not compete. He suffered an injury to his left knee in practice Monday, and it swelled up on him. He was on crutches yesterday but expects to return for the Big East meet Saturday at Eastern.
Jason Hardin (16-0) of Pleasure Ridge Park won the 275 crown, pinning Central's All-State defensive tackle Corey Peters in 57 seconds.
Bowlds pinned Keiman Maguire of DeSales in 3:37 for his title.
"I hadn't had a point scored on me all tournament," Bowlds said. "I wanted to go out there, give it my all and get it over with."
Eastern got wins from Joaquin Luna (24-2) at 112, Ben Rupp (24-3) at 171 and Aaron Wise (20-3) at 215.
Aubrey Hayes (18-3) of Jeffersontown pulled an upset in pinning Joe Powers of Southern in 5:31 for the 140 title. Powers (21-4) is ranked No. 4 in the state. Hayes is unranked.
"I wrestled him before this season, and he beat me by five points," Hayes said. "I wrestled better this time. He had a slight ankle injury, but I came in better prepared."
