From this mornings Cincinnati Enquirer:
Camels pin down win over Pioneers
Campbell Co. takes 10 of 14 matches
BY MARC HARDIN | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR
When James Wilbers wrestled for Campbell County coach Mike Bankemper in the 1980s, the match the Camel wrestlers circled on their schedule was Simon Kenton.
"When I was at Campbell, the big dual you always looked forward to was Simon. Even the parents went nuts," said Wilbers, who was an assistant under Bankemper for 12 years before his current stint as Simon Kenton head coach. "Those matches were very competitive. But the rivalry hasn't been that competitive since I got here, except for last year when we finally beat them."
Campbell County, ranked No. 2 in the Northern Kentucky coaches' poll and winner of three state championships, earned a convincing dual-meet home victory over No. 3 Simon Kenton on Wednesday.
Campbell County, which beat its longtime rival 15 years in a row until last season, improved to 43-2 in duals by outpointing the one-time state champion Pioneers 54-16.
The Camels won 10 of 14 matches, six via pin.
Senior heavyweight Billy Fuller capped the win and improved to 50-1 on the season by pinning Tony Turner at the 1:32 mark. Fuller, fifth at the state meet last season, gave up more than 50 pounds to Turner, but won with superior quickness.
"It helps seeing guys who are a lot bigger. But really, I'm not concerned about the weight because I like to move fast," said Fuller, who is wrestling 15 pounds lighter than last season. "I lift a lot, so I'm just as strong, if not stronger, than the bigger guys. But my endurance is better."
Zack Fryer (103 pounds), Talon Deinlein (130), Korey Shotwell (140), Jake Lee (160) and Ross Risner (215) also won by pin for the Camels.
There was one upset, according to the two coaches. Matt Neal (31-2) of Simon Kenton (22-10) won by decision over Thomas Brownfield (47-5) by a score of 3-1 at 171 pounds.
In the lone match featuring dueling state-qualifiers from last season, Campbell County's Kyle Griffith, who placed sixth in 2007, decisioned Ben Winkler, seventh at state last season, 4-0.
"When we circled up after the match, I told our guys they never stopped. They just kept pounding us," Wilbers said. "Now it's up to us to decide what to do next practice. Are we going half-speed, or are we going all out then go work out on our own after practice?"
