Union County took its highest finish ever in the state duals on Saturday in Lexington, taking second to Louisville Trinity during the head-to-head format.
The Braves took a one-point loss to Trinity in the finals. Along the way, Union County defeated Louisville Southern (56-13), South Oldham (65-14) and Johnson Central (60-12) before downing Campbell County (46-27) in the semifinals.
Top-ranked Jarvis Elam defeated second-ranked Myron Bradbury 5-3 at 103 pounds. Jake Wempe remained undefeated at 125 pounds. Josh Willett avenged an earlier loss to Trinity at 152.
Aaron Carr at 119 and Mitch Ervin at 160 pinned all of their opponents on the day. Carr has pinned 36 of his 39 opponents this year, while Ervin is 87-0 on the season.
The Braves were without state-ranked 189-pounder Diante Wright because of injury. Freshman Timothy McKenney filled in, but Wright is expected back in time for regionals on Feb. 9.
Henderson County made its first trip to the state duals as it took the region's other bid. Though the Colonels lost all four of their matches, they gained valuable experience as a five-year-old program. Henderson County dropped matches to eventual champion Trinity, traditional powerhouse Woodford County, Larue County and Meade County.
"Even though there weren't a whole lot of wins up there for us, we gave everybody fits," Henderson County coach J.R. Bryant said. "It was a great experience for us. It showed us what we need to do when we see these teams again at state."
Union County travels to Caldwell County on Thursday, and both teams will compete in the Union County Duals on Satuday beginning at 9 a.m.....
This article is wrong just in the fact that mitch isn't 87-0 this season. No one has wrestled 87 matches 2 weeks before regionals!!!
