Matt Neal from SK DQ'd from regional

Topic ID: 3456 | 79 Posts

2nd round of Regional, Matt Neal lost a close match to Brownfield of Campbell Co, and said to the ref "Don't you have the balls to call stalling?" and was DQ'd from tournament.  Just a warning to everybody, to watch your mouth and let your coach handle the ref.  Ranked 3rd in state, and not going down because of something he said.

That is ridiculous!    Certain refs just think the sport is about them , If a wrestler just lost a close  match in regions sometimes u need to say a thing or two !

No. The wrestler needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and not say anything to the ref.

That's just like if someone said something to a ref in a basketball game and they were T'd up...

Don't say anything and let your coaches talk to the ref.

Wow!!!!!

If you believe this and you are a wrestler yourself I see a few DQ's headed your way.

There are few reasons for a wrestler to ever speak to an official.  And never should they speak to an official in this manner.  If the official did not do anything in this case I would hope that their coach would have done something.  I know I would be upset if my son did this and was not punished in some way.  (Of course he would when he got home) if he had the gut to come home after doing something that disrespectful.

i'll say what it is needed to be said. i saw the match and brownfield was stalling unbelievably bad..

3 cheers to the referee.  This seems to happen way too often.  The ref did the right thing.

I was there, and Brownfield should have been called for stalling.  But so what?  How many takedowns are never called?  How many reversals are controversial?  Quick pins?  Out of bounds?  If everyone argued every single "iffy" call, then we could never have a winner in a wrestling match.  I do feel sorry for Neal, but he brought this on himself.

I just hope it wasn't a certain Ref, I wasn't there, somebody mail me

I do not agree what Neal did was right, I think he might feel as though he was slighted, AGAIN. If you know everything, sir, and watched all of his effort and hard work, his trials and tests, you might see things differently.

That's all I have to say

Sounds like shades of Jacob Watson all over again from last year.

If you do not know what is goin' on, don't be playin' on    I Love Matt Neal!!!

Neal made a reference to the size of the ref's manhood. The DQ was more than justified!

I agree to respectfully disagree.  It is my understanding that Mr. Neal's situation is not the best, however, when he stepped out on the mat the playing field is level.  I was not familiar with any of the referees at the tournament today and I don't think they were handed an explanation of all the extrenuating circustances of any and all wrestlers that were entered into the event.  I have watched Neal for the past several years.  Next year he should let his performance and not his mouth do the talking for him.

I agree, completely, Ryledad

Read this though:

What goes around,,,,, comes around! Remember that at your next church meeting, sir!

Don't just attend something if you are really just there for looks! :-)

I say: Karma to ryledad

Huh?

No matter what the ref says to me all I can say is yes sir and no sir...

This is a good short comment.

This shows good caracter, and good coaching.

You and your coach get a pat on the back from me.  :-D

Its not exactly the coaches..

some people you can't control some people are just well mannered..

all your coach can do is punish you.. that doesn't change someone

matt neal's attitude really needs to change he's been doing stuff like this since freshman year but not as serious i think it was a good reality check for him

I was there.  It was a match where both wrestler worked hard but not a lot of points were scored.  It looked like a college match; very even.  Staying in good position and not losing points is all a part of it.  Circle, wrestle hard and don't give up any stupid points.  Keep your daggone mouth shut.  I wrestled for Boone when we won the state championship in 79.  Bob Warnick, our coach, told us don't never lose a match due to a bad call or no call from a referee.  I still remember opening my big mouth in a match and losing a point because I questioned a refs call.  I ran for miles that next week. If you need (a refs call) that to win a match you didn't deserve to win.

I want it to be understood that I have no ill will towards Matt Neal.  It is the behavior that needs to be corrected.  I have been told by other individuals that he is a pleasant young man.  I wish him well and hopefully next year will be his finest.

The ref was right to DQ Neal! Not only did Neal's behavior show disrespect to the ref but for his opponent and everyone in the tournament as well.

There's never a time when it's appropriate for a wrestler to call out the ref for his calls. One rule of any sport is there are going to be some bad calls. Athletes should take their lumps and rise to the level that a bad calls won't cost them a loss. I hope Matt Neal will learn from this and come back next year a better man!

I just hope it wasn't a certain Ref, I wasn't there, somebody mail me

This is a moot point.  It shouldn't/doesn't matter who the ref was.  Wrestlers need to be accountable for their actions, and unfortunately this one was costly for Neal.  Costly to his team too.  Hopefully the sum of his experiences this year make him a more disciplined wrestler next year.......otherwise his talent will be wasted.

Matt Neal is the wind beneath my wings.

Well said!

There was that one ref there that was horrible.. i saw at least 4 pins that the ref didn't get down quick enough for..

bogus stalling calls, no stalling calls.

petersons not be accounted for. takedowns not being counted for..

all from one ref

I does no good to complain about the refs. If the coaches think a ref does an overall decent job he will continue being used. I heard there is one ref that was at state last year that isn't invited this year. IF that's true then there is some accountability that makes refs try to do a good job. I think they have a tough job since they have to be alert all day with only short breaks.

If wrestlers watch enough matches they will know what refs make certain calls and adjust their style to compensate.

And this has what to do with Matt Neal's conduct?

it was also his ref lol

i didn't wrestle, i just don't like seeing a poor job being done by the refs especially at region.

i haven't seen any of the refs before.

I understand it is hard, but some seem to not try very hard. just an observation

That official wouldn't happen to be a very large African-American gentleman by chance would it?

I thought this thread was about Matt Neal!

The thread for bad refs isn't supposed to be for another week.

Every year right after state the complaining about refs thread is started, usually by 1:30PM.

no.. some little fella with a tight tee shirt. loved to run around lol

It is, but since this thread like almost every other thread on this website strays off course, I just thought I would ask.  You are free to go back to discussing Matt Neal.

Okay thanks.  I was just curious.  Now back on topic for Mr. Clean.

It's okay Jo Momma, my comment was intended to be light hearted!

No offense taken.

All the criticism about refs doing a bad job is bogus. I used to blast referrees while I was wrestling, but then I started reffing this year. If you think the reffing is bad, then do something about it. I'm sick of all these people who criticize refs but when they are done with wrestling, they don't go back and ref, they just keep criticizing. If you want reffing to improve in the state, become a ref and be a good one. In time, your reputation will spread as being a good ref, and you will be assigned more often and to the more prestigious tournaments. I received good reviews this year from almost all coaches, and it paid off for me. I came in late, so I didn't get a lot scheduled, but a little bit into it, coaches started talking me up and I was called to do a lot more tournaments.

i'm only 16 still in high school.. so i can't

I was going to ref, but they told me that my I.Q. was too high. Ouch!

Burn

Tell your step-brother about that one Pride!

Josh or Jason

Either!

They should be at state, if i remember ill say something because that was quite hilarious

Thank you. If you don't remember, I'll remind you.

I mean I forget stuff all the time, by the way congrats on your upperweights...

Thanks, it felt really good to have the big boys on top again. Hopefully all of them can place Sat. I wish Greg could have at least gotten fourth, but three champs, I'll take that!

Yea, Old Gregs flying headlock didnt come through. But dominating 171-215 is great...Levi has a shot, i havnt seen the 171 bracket

I can't wait! Are you going to party with Jagger for his birthday!

When is the party? They booked the party room at the Holiday Inn this weekend I know that. wasnt his birthday party during regions last year?

The 15th is his birthday. Last year we moved his party back a weekend so I wouldn't miss it because of State. This year they are going, so his party will be The Party after State!

See you guys at state, I found out everything I needed to know through mails

Hopefully we will be celebrating a repeat along with Jaggers Bday...GO BRAVES!!!

Speaking of reffing, I had to referee the Cincinnati Youth Wrestling tournament today.  I am not an official ref, just a dad and coach of a high school and youth wrestler.  Every team in the Cincinnati/Northern KY area has to run a table for the Citywide tournament.  These kids are 9 and 10 years old, but you would think that the way some people act, that it was the high school state finals.

I do not envy the refs at all.  It is a thankless job.  Referees aren't perfect.  They are going to miss some calls.  They do not have the benefit of instant replay.  A lot of wrestling scoring is judgment calls.  Some refs call it different than other refs.  That's the breaks.

If you have a call that could go either way, then some team is going to gripe.  I had 2 matches today that I was verbally abused.  Until you actually ref a match, you don't know how difficult it is.  This is my 4th year of reffing at Citywide, and I will continue to do it until my youngest son is in middle school.

The next time you want to argue a call, put yourself in the refs position.

Sound familiar nkydad? I feel sorry for you, I wouldn't want to be a ref.

Its not exactly the coaches..

I know not to talk to the ref, even if I'm mad, but my coach enforces that.. Its good coaching and manners.

I WAS AT THE TOURNEY, FOR AS THE REFS QUALITY OF CALLS I THOUGHT THEY WERE AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN MOST I'VE SEEN. AS FOR THE NEAL MATCH, I BELIEVE CACO KID WAS STALLING BUT EVEN IF REF CALLED IT NEAL WOULD'VE GOTTEN 1 PT. WAS DOWN 2 MAKE NO CALL MEANINGLESS. AS FOR THE PERSON WHO SAID HE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SAY SOMETHING AFTER LOSING[i DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD] HE DID, WAS WARNED TEAM POINT TAKEN AWAY. HE KEPT TALKING SO HE UNFORTUNATLY SAID TO MUCH

WHY ARE WE YELLING?

lol

i know what he said.. isn't enough to get dq'd

enough for a team point thats for sure but i've heard much worse being said during matches and to the ref

i think the ref got scared for his health or something.. cause he for sure ran away i got a little giggle from that

yeah i said giggle

It absolutely, positively, without a shadow of doubt DOES NOT matter what was said. You absolutely, positively, without a shadow of doubt DO NOT argue with the ref at all.

You let your coaches handle that and you keep your emotions in check.

And you would've seen a lot more DQs if you'd heard worse things said during a match and to a ref...

YOU DON'T HAVE TO TYPE LIKE THIS!!!

He can't help it. He has that condition that the Will Ferrell character had where you can't control the volume of your voice.

By the way. I would like everyone to show their support by signing my giant "I HEART MATT NEAL" sign that i'm makin'. You'll see me. I'll be the white trash in camo holdin' the four foot poster board. Thanks. :-D

I talk to the refs..

i've seen people argue.. some refs are fine with it and actually talk to you about it.. some refs go crazy and blow things out of proportion...

i was there i know what was said. it was blown out of proportion by a ref that should have not been there.

Why shouldn't he have been there?

poor calls.. not giving takedowns.. not giving petersons.. calling stalling when its not.. not calling stalling

i talked to everyone about this ref.. they agreed.

I THINK WHAT HE SAID TO GET DQ'D BY ITSELF PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH, BUT SINCE ALREADY HAD 1 PT. TAKEN AWAY LEFT THE REF WITH NO OTHER RECOURSE. IF HE WAS SUCH A BAD REF YOU DON'T GIVE ANOTHER WAY TO BEAT YOU DOWN

poor calls.. not giving takedowns.. not giving petersons.. calling stalling when its not.. not calling stalling

i talked to everyone about this ref.. they agreed.

All I can say to that is you're going to have good refs and bad. You just have to learn to deal with both ends of the spectrum.

i talked to everyone about this ref.. they agreed.

C'mon they had to be better than the region 6 refs last year.  :-D

And only a parent was kicked out last year, and maybe a coach.

Ha Ha i remember that gary robins dad that was the funniest thing i ever saw

I don't understand why there's even an argument here. Wrestlers are supposed to keep their mouths shut, hence the coach sitting in the corner. Leave policy to the coaching staff. It is impossible to justify a wrestler spitting profanity at an official at any venue. Matt Neal was out of line, and he deserves the punishment which has been handed down to him. Some of you may be friends with Matt, but try to empathize ( see things from another's perspective). Surely none of you would appreciate a wrestler challenging your manhood in front of a crowd like that. So take a deep breath and come to terms with the fact that what Neal did was disrespectful and unsportsmanlike.

I know i'm restating what's already been said a million times in this thread....but true pioneer, if you think about it...you may not like Matt getting dq'ed...no one wants to see that.  But if he had said NOTHING, like I'm sure his coach and many others have told him to do in the past,

1) he'd still be wrestling at state this weekend

2) he'd be on the opposite side of Reid

It did him absolutely no good to say what he did.  Maybe it made him feel better for 2 seconds.  But if he cares about wrestling or his team, it should make him feel bad for a lonnng time that he got DQed.  The ref doesn't care, nor should he have to tolerate that.  Hopefully someone close to Matt will make him see that he shouldn't have done what he did.  You're his team mate, perhaps you should try to not make a joke out of it and tell him he was right.  Tell him "dude...you messed up, quit screwing up!!!"

Thankyou. I would have DQed him also, we are told to throw a wrestler out if he cusses at you or insults you, and the same goes for coaches or fans.

Emotions run high, but you sure as heck shouldn't say that on the mat.  he got what he deserved.  Hope he learns next year.

Here is what I know as a fat guy, when competing things happen that you never planned on, you are full of adrenelin, your pumped, you are trained to keep your mouth shut, your working hard to WIN, you feel like you are getting ROBBED, you REACT. I have lost my cool too, it is just hard sometimes to tolerate what you think as people not putting in as much work or effort as you just did for the last year! You wonder why I got this guy, or girl, in any sport. Sometimes, what you are thinking should stay in your head. I have stunk it up as a competitor too. I wish I could take some things back! :-)

Wrestling teaches many lessons, the least important is how to wrestle. After one is 18, if they lose their cool or fall to the pressure of an intense situation, they get fired from their job or arrested and placed in jail. Getting kicked out of a wrestling tournament seems pretty mild comparatively and demonstrates to minors they are also responsible for their actions.
