Regional Alternates?

Topic ID: 3512 | 15 Posts

Does any team bring their alternates with them?  I think it was last year, when some heavyweight was messing around on the fountain outside on the plaza, and sprained his ankle and couldn't wrestle.  Also, Cooper at 152lbs (ranked #1 in the state at the time) hurt his knee regional weekend and couldn't wrestle at the state tournament.  Did the alternates get to wrestle in these cases?  What's the point of having alternates if they never get to wrestle?  What if a state qualifier gets sick or hurt?  Does the coach of that team have to notify the coach of the alternate before the state meet?  Have alternates ever made the tournament and had any kind of impact?  Just a topic of discussion for some of the alternates out there.  If you're lucky, you may get  to wrestle!

Yes.  Back in 2001, Steven Murray of Waggener was a fifth place alternate from the old Region 3.  He took the place of Brian Jurich of Ballard in the State Tournamnent.  Steven made it to the semi-finals and went home with a 6th place finish.

That's awesome.  Nice to hear about someone taking advantage of an opportunity given to them, and doing their best with it.

Yes, like thegreatgatsby said, the alternates do go.  The HWT you were referring to from last year was Adam Burdin from Ohio County.

Zack Pearson of Henderson Co. was the Region 1 HWT alternate that would have gotten to wrestle in Adam's place, but he didn't make the trip to the tournament.

Since the Region 1 alternate at HWT wasn't there, the Manual HWT was drawn into the tournament.  Priority always goes to the 5th place finisher for a region where one of the kids in a given weight class don't compete for a given reason.  If that region's alternate is not available to compete, then they have a drawn in system to complete the field.  It rotates by region & last year Region 4 had the 1st slot.  This year, Region 3 has the 1st drawn in alternate if a given region's alternate is not available to compete.

John Dials of Sheldon Clark finished 5th at region and placed at the state tournament several years ago at 215.  He was in Region 4 (Region 7 and 8) today.

Also happened to the kid from Franklin Co. who ended his senior year at Woodford.  But his junior year I think he got 5th in Regions and 5th in state.  It was the late 90's

yeah i remember that.

mike hunt from larue was another one. he placed like 5-6 early to mid 90's

Where is Mike Hunt now? Has anyone seen Mike Hunt lately.

I think Cooper's alternate kid was who I wrestled. That is, if Ryle is in the same region as Simon Kenton.
