Yes -- it was ugly. I'm glad Cody came back at him by beating him instead of retaliating with a swing.
And speaking of random occurences, what was up with the Whiting-Bullock match? I was watching some other bouts and just knew there was some big controversy.

I just remembered another random thing. Joe Cattan arguing with another ref, who's name I don't know, about awarding Travis Sullivan an escape point. That was crazy. I mean, he started down, and he got out of it. How hard is that to figure out?
DC Evans had a freak out. He slammed his headgear, his coach came to talk to him and then he pushed his coach away and walked across the mat where Zeppa and Johnson were wrestling.

the bullock-whiting match was insane. whiting threw bullock to his back and bullock rolled threw to whitings back. had him pinned deader then a door nail then what happened?????? what do u think? this crying off ur back bull*&$@ that we talked about earlier in the year. then whiting illegally slammed bullock and nothing was called. there u have another poorly officiated match. no pin, no illegal slam, bad referee.
I do think there were fewer instances of poor behavior this year than years past. I know of one wrestler whose coach took him out of the tournament because he acted up in a match -- refused to walk back to the center and shake his opponent's hand after losing. Only reason I know about it is because his next opponent was from my team, and the coach told the official he was forfeiting because he had withdrawn the wrestler from the tournament. Maybe other things like that happened, and I just didn't hear about it. I'm also not aware of anyone who didn't make weight the second and third days. Again, maybe I didn't know about it.

I'm sure you can adopt some of the juniors, sophmores and freshman on the team. Thats allowed!
Throwing this out there. Catan is GARBAGE!
I hope he never finds out who you are! That is if you plan on wrestling next year. If he's as bad as you say he is you'll pay for that!

Yep, he has my vote for "Most Incompetent Official of the Year." Mr. Cattan, somersault on up here and claim your award.

Its not a somersault; its a Cataan role!

he also kicked his opponent in the face when they went out of bounds on a shot

Ford is just as bad if not worse than Cattan.
mat mama, you obviously have a personal problem and what are you smoking. You should address matches he actually officiates with the whistle rather than the assistant ones if you can. I watched the entire state tournament, did you. The refs did a great job considering the task they take on. Three days of hard work with a double in the middle.

Sorry if I offended you, but I have a right to my opinion. Yes, I watched the entire tournament. I do think the refs have a tough job, but that doesn't mean we're supposed to give them a pass if they do it poorly. I think highly of Jimmy Shaw and Dave Barnett. Some of the other officials I think are OK. But I happen to think Cattan and Ford make some bad calls and are very inconsistent.

Also, Rocky did a VERY good job at this tourney. I didn't see any bad calls on his part. He was very consistent and didn't cost anyone matches. Good job.
Mat Mama, I think you should be an official. You seem to have all the right calls. You seem to know 4 refs only. Do you know the others and how many times each has been at state. I have seen them all at tournaments all year and they are the best. They are called back for a reason. Lots of people want jobs but can not do them. Maybe, they can add your name to the job list next year.

No need to be sarcastic dude. People are just having a little fun here.
It's also because they are the ones who are able to afford to take off work for 2-3 days or can even get off work. For what they get paid to do it it is hard/not possible for some refs to go.

I'm not sure why you're fixated on my opinion, since many others have complained about the refs on this board. Last year after State, as a matter of fact, someone, not me, started a thread that went on for weeks about the bad calls. Numerous people weighed in with examples. Anyway as I said before, I have a right to my opinion, and you have a right to yours, too. I never said I could officiate. That doesn't mean I can't recognize a good job or a poor one. I can't paint, but I know a good painting when I see one. I can't sew a dress, but I can tell when one is well-made. I could go on, but what would be the point? You've just decided to berate me no matter what I say.
Papi did good
Mat mama I am not trying to belittle you, but you and others on this site have made comments about officials. I am a spectator and participate in a number of sports and officiating is a job with few thanks. Calls are made on a split second decision. From my vision point the guys should be given praze for there efforts and not belittled.

ulgrad,
If you had posted here much you would know this thread is kind of a tradition. Every year after the state tournament, people all get together and talk a little trash. The official start date for complaining about refs is the day after state tournament. There's talk about who stalled, who tapped out and who would win pound for pound between Trinity's 103 and Woodford's heavyweight. Don't get to worked up over the ref posts, it's just a tradition that isn't going to change anything! Nothing real serious is going to happen here just a little fun! Most of it will be forgotten by next season and we'll all start a new season of seeing who we like!
It's also because they are the ones who are able to afford to take off work for 2-3 days or can even get off work. For what they get paid to do it it is hard/not possible for some refs to go.
Coach, that isn't accurate so don't perpetuate lies and crap. Having talked to most of the officials in the state, I haven't found a single one who has turned down the request to work when the state called. Not a single one. Now are some not officiating AT ALL during the season due to conflicts, probably so. But to imply that there are better officials who somehow turned down the state because of work, just isn't true.

Congrats to Justin and Dakota. It is always good to see local boys on top.
I think highly of Jimmy Shaw and Dave Barnett.
Shaw??? The Joe Neely want-a-be. Mr. arrogant himself? To me he puts to much emphasis on himself and not enough on the wrestling.
Barnett and Shumate two of the best all around.
Who was the guy in the long johns
Who was the guy in the long johns
That was me. I hope that lives on forever. Excuse my use of slang [i use it very often] but I was BALLIN' in my long johns and old school singlet. My leg was swollen and looked like it had elephantitis but I thought that maybe the sweet singlet would have scared Mitch into submission. :-D
Haha, that is one clown I highly doubt anyone would be scared of though.

It was pretty funny. I had the trip set of perfect but I didn't take it because I thought we were going out of bounds. The second I looked at the ref Mitch tripped me. lol. I was laughing before I even hit the ground. I'll admit to not wrestling to win. I was wrestling to spare my leg. Still lasted longer than some other people. :-D

I was going to say something about the singlet but decided not to. I thought that was what was given to you, never would have guessed you wore it voluntarily :-D
Also who thought the playing of "My Old Kentucky Home" could be so boring?
Yes, it was. And could we not get a decent copy of it? I love the song -- it represents Kentucky, but it belongs at the Derby, not an indoor wrestling championship in the wintertime. Oh, well. I give the KHSAA credit for trying.

Uh oh, UL, you had better get over on the High School Wrestling discussion board and tell them to stop complaining about the refs!

I agree, the place was electric and then you play My old KY home and it's a downer.
mat mamma is complaining in nearly every thread. very annoying. its obvious you never wrestled.
I like Barnett which he is hands downt he best. Cole is another very good ref. I just think Catan does not belong there. Half the time he is to lazy to get in a decent position to count bank points... I mean come on if you are really to lazy to get your butt on the ground and count you dont belong there!
We will miss you leaning over the rail when he wrestled :-)
LOL I WILL MISS EVERYTHING I ENJOY WRESTLING SO MUCH!!!
WOW, lies and crap? I know for sure of one ref that couldn't do it this year because of work issues...which is the reason I said that. And i know a few years ago Barnett couldn't do it because it fell on his national guard duty and couldn't get out of it...so I know it happens and it is true. Chris Shaw was listed as a ref for the state tournament originally anyone know why he didn't do it? I saw him there on Friday for a little while.

Chris was never listed as a ref for this year's tournament because he didn't officiate this year while finishing his masters. And one of the West Virginia guys who does a heck of a job had already said he had Air Force duties that weekend, but he supposedly told KHSAA that information early in the school year. I do have the good fortune of talking to all of the referees who are worth a dime and no one that I talked to turned it down.

I have talked to all who were offered the chance to work. No one turned it down.

Liza Crap,
A girl I went out with in college.
I was just wondering about Chris because he is listed in the handbook that all coaches get in their packets as being a ref for the 2008 tournament so i was wondering about that as I never saw him officiate this year like I have in years past. The masters would explain that I guess.

Catan Rules and Shumate is the best of all. Barnet is not too shabby but shumate hands down is the best ref in our state. He is always fair and consistent and I challenge one person on here to point out one bad call he made. He is always working hard on the mat and trying to make sure the best wrestler wins. But you gotta love catan. Shown\manship alone places hin\m top three.

LOL That's a good one, Kiss.
during the Whiting v. Payne match after Whiting threw him out of bounds Payne did a crazy hand stand donkey kick thing...it was sweet.
mat mamma is complaining in nearly every thread. very annoying. its obvious you never wrestled.
KYg, I'm really sorry I've annoyed you. I don't start threads but just respond to others, either agreeing or disagreeing. In the last post before you made this comment, I was agreeing with what several other people had said about "My Old Kentucky Home." Obviously you haven't read many of my posts.
And, yes, I'd say with a screen name like MatMama, it's obvious I never wrestled. Dang, you caught me.

I have turned down post season officiating due to conflicts and I have to believe that a number of others have done the same. I also know of a couple others (very good refs) who just don't want to get into the politics and headaches of the post season.
That was the wildest thing I saw all weekend.during the Whiting v. Payne match after Whiting threw him out of bounds Payne did a crazy hand stand donkey kick thing...it was sweet.
yeah after that handstand the crowd went crazy
Whenever Payne loses a big match he always does some crazy, over-animated convulsion. lol. It's pretty fun to watch.
And, yes, I'd say with a screen name like MatMama, it's obvious I never wrestled. Dang, you caught me.
I was thinking the same thing!
Caught ya red handed!

Politics of postseason? Do tell.
