what match do you think was the most exciting?
Wow. I don't know that I could pick just one. I'd say one of the most exciting was Choate-Ashbrooke. Also, several matches went quadruple overtime. I actually don't remember right now who was in any of them except that Mikal McNealy from Eastern was in one.
The most exciting for me was the 135 final with Justin Davis and Matt Miller. Since I'm from Eastern I know I was prejudiced on that one cheering for Davis all the way. I'm sure it had my excitement level up.
If I had to choose one I was neutral on I'd say Mason Reid against Brad Hitchings. A couple of times I thought Reid was in trouble. But he kept working hard to get his win. Reid fools you not really looking that much like a wrestler, but on the mat he is all business!
hands down Choate-Ashbrooke
I liked the finals at 189, Jones and Houchens!
Jones looks like a beast, but Houchens kept coming at him.
During the match it appeared that Jones was getting winded while Houchens was still attacking.
It went into overtime and Jones regrouped and scored two to win, very good from both sides!
Congrats to both wrestlers!

I agree -- Jones-Houchens was an exciting match. I had expected Jones to win but began to believe Houchens could pull it out. Great effort by both.
hands down Choate-Ashbrooke
you have got to be joking this was by far the most boring match of the finals.
but congrats to choate but it still was highly uneventful

What are you talking about? Choate didn't wrestle Ashbrook in the finals.
Every match was pretty exciting especially the choate- down.
Issacs right?
Issacs right?
Yes. That wasn't a real exciting match, and I expected Choate to win it. But the Choate-Ashbrook match was thrilling, partially because of who was wrestling. Ashbrook was undefeated by any Kentucky wrestler.
I thought the HWT match between Whiting and Payne (the iroqouis kid) was the most entertaining with all the antics going on.
My favorite match was the exhibition match between Lee and Pickett.......on the deuce!!

yea the payne was a great match but he was robbed he slam whiting 5 times and was hit for stalling
Bradbury vs Elam

check the rule book before you make that claim, that IS stalling.
Choate should have won MOW. What seed was he and he was the only Ky guy to beat ashbrook(the shoe in) this year. He is awsome. I have never seen anything like him.

cOULD BE THE FIRST 2XER FOR THE RIDGE since James simpson back in th 80s. Da oy good.
Next year should be interesting.
davis and miller final was the best. The action was non stop. Davis kept miller in the middle and did not let him play the edge where miller usually does his work.
I didn't think it was very exciting, Davis dominated and Miller was just extremely gassed. Best match I thought was Houchens and Jones even though there were a ton of timeouts.

How about Nate Ilg of newport (160) beating jake lee of campbell county in overtime to place. He ended up placing 8th, jacob ilg (215) placed 7th, and John Hale (119) was one match away from placing.
How about Choate beating ashbrooke and Issacs. Excitement is an understatement. WOWe wow wow. !52 lb state champ. Thats awsome. Region three just keeps producing state champs more and more every year. Coaching has stepped it up big time. The athletes were always there just interested in other sports. Look out Ky. Look for one of those underdogs every year to be nippin at those heels. Wait until they get a fedder system going. It will be like fern creeks everywhere.
Mason Reid & Cody Lasseigne was a good one!!!
Anybody catch Travis Sullivans semi finals match?
Gotta be careful with that so they don't end up going to other schools and hurt yours instead of helping it.

By all means, keep talking. lol. PRP is the place to go. :-D

I think what CoachK is trying to say, is that if region 3 isn't careful, the good wrestlers they are building or will build in their feeder programs will be recruited to GREENer pastures. Remember the FORK in the Fern

I seen some very good matches, I was hoping for different outcomes on some, I seen a couple of matches that I wish I was at the room with my peanut butter and Pringles though, still hate that tap-out crap! Sullivan match was the most shocking though

If they hadn't of taken so much time cleaning up blood I think Houchens would have gotten him. Jones was gased. That break allowed him to regroup. Conditioning is one of the biggest parts of wrestling.
My boy Ryan will be back at 189 next season and nobody will touch him. He looked amazing in the finals with Jones and was capable of beating him. Next season there will do no doubt who is number one.

Agree. Jones looked almost unbeatable at the beginning, but Houchens wore him down.

Houchens had a lot of heart. That was a great match, and I think you're right.
Elam vs Bradbury was one of the fastest matches I have ever seen.

No matter how gased i was i still won my coach told me to keep moving. When i came down i had the gas to score to two. Ryan is a good wrestler but i had more to prove. But i wish him good luck and he should run through state and should be mow next year.
my favorite was poor Bill getting thrown into a chiar

yea the tap-out rule is really dumb. but i dont think the Sullivan match was too surprising, i mean he barely won it last year and after the close match that him and Spencer had at regionals i was pretty sure he would win going into that match.
i thought that the 140 and 145 finals were both exciting when Sanders got first take down on Courtney i didnt know what to think
Sanders' glory didn't last too long
Without a doubt it was the third and fourth match between Whiting and Payne, if there had been one more minute left on the clock they would have started swinging. Why is slamming your opponent stalling?

i would have to say the 130 finals of johnson and ervin was a very good match came down to 2 points at the wire... Very Exciting

I don't know about that. If Hitchings continues to grow he may will be someone who challenges at 189.
Strength-wise Houchens always seems to be overmatched, but he more than makes ups for it with technique and heart. He will be the one to beat at 189 next year, but I agree if Hitchings continues to grow and goes 189, he would probably give him a run for his money. Ryan Kelly will also be in the hunt.
Yeah, there was a post about that last year after he was injured at state. Some people were saying he was going to be aged out & some were saying he wasn't. Unless he turns 19 prior to August 1st, he will be eligible.
I wish the goofy score keepers could have gotten the overtime clock set quickly in the Houchens/Kelly match. Kelly looked alot more fatigued then Houchens at the end of regulation. I believe the outcome could have been different if not for the long break allowing Kelly to refuel.

Have you ever seen Kelly when he wasnt tired and breathin heavy?
Most people don't know that Kelly had only been on the Mat 6 weeks before state. His 1st day of practice was 12/26. He suffered a torn MCL from football and was doubtful he would even get to wrestle this season. He has spent a total of 6 months in rehab since the state last year. 3 months rehab for his elbow and another 3 on his knee.
And he will not be aged out. He will be 18 his senior year.
most exciting, the parents of lee and picket

i agree, them ryle mom's can scrap!! they were just walking the halls looking for a fight.
pictures will be posted online soon. :-D :-D
Please God no!!!!!
3/4 nelson, do you mean Houchens/Jones? Houchens didn't wrestle Kelly at state this year.
In 2005 he was 14 yrs old. I don't think they are giving driving permits at that age.
How about the heavy weight 3rd and 4th place match when James payne form Irq. picked up Jordan Whiting from trinty over his head. That was crazy he was completly vertical in the air.
payne is a strong wrestler
branch/poulton
miller/branch

I've come to accept the fact that the coaches will not allow a region 3 kid to win MOW. Thats all there is to that one.

yeah he won state but every match was close......no one beat sullivan either and corey spencer didn't get MOW....it's for teh most outstanding wrestler at state and courtney pinned or teched everyone so he won it rightfully

I definately agree with this he deserved the mow without a doubt. but last year derek nickel didnt allow a single offensive point the whole tournament and teched pinned or majored all the way up to the finals. he was also the lowest ranked kid to ever win state and he just didnt get it. the coaches wont let it happen. region discrimination.
i think the reason they hate region 3 is cause we have not as good teams like ryle and union or even trinity but we have good or decent individuals but notice how all the MOW's are from big wrestling schoolsI definately agree with this he deserved the mow without a doubt. but last year derek nickel didnt allow a single offensive point the whole tournament and teched pinned or majored all the way up to the finals. he was also the lowest ranked kid to ever win state and he just didnt get it. the coaches wont let it happen. region discrimination.
2008: harrison courtney
2007: mitch ervin
2006 jacob murton
2005: kyle ruschell
I dont think Lawrence County(Jacob Murton) is a big wrestling school. lol
Most coaches go into a tournament with an idea of at least a few wrestlers whom they would vote as MOW. The state tournament is no exception. Sure there were some people who stepped up to the task, but I know I was particularly looking at Peace, Reid, Ervin or Courtney. With no disrespect to any other wrestler like, they were the four I considered to be Kentucky's best this year. It has nothing to do with what region they were from only with the talent they display on the mat. I don't think coaches are discriminatory towards any one region. I personally believed that of the four, Courtney was the most dominant so I voted for him. I looked back through the brackets and saw where up to the finals, Ervin and Courtney were equally dominant in their weight classes. Since Courtney pinned his opponent and Ervin won by decision, that is why I voted for Courtney. Honestly, if Wolseifer would have wrestled this year, the winner of the Ervin/Wolseifer match, regardless if it was in the quartefinals, semifinals or finals would have probably received my vote. I'm sure many of the other coaches would have been the same way. Besides, the award is most outstanding, not most surprising. Although Spencer and Choate did earn their titles and no matter how much people want to knock them, they are state champions, they weren't the most outstanding for the tournament. I think if coaches are discriminatory about anything, it's weight class, not region. I'm not for sure, but has a wrestler in the 103, 112 or HWT weight classes ever won the MOW at state? Kyle Ruschell was mentioned as an MOW in an earlier post. He is a perfect example of this. In 2004, he pinned his way through state at 103 and didn't win MOW. I'm pretty sure he was the only one to pin through state that year. In 2005, he moved up to 119 and had pins in the first 2 rounds and tech falls in the last 3 rounds and wins MOW. It was another dominating performance, but not necessarily any more dominant than the previous year. I know some people still talk about Derek Nickel from last year and I'm proud of him for what he accomplished, but I'm pretty sure Zarth and Martin didn't allow any offensive points in 2007 either and Zarth was in a much tougher weight class that year. IMO if anyone other than Ervin should have won MOW last year it should have been Zarth.
Not to change the topic too much but yes there have been two 112 MOW and one HWT.
1994: Bruce Stepp, Sheldon Clark High School, 275 lbs
1986: David Richey, Caldwell County, 112 lbs
1981: Robbie Clarkston, Conner High School, Senior / Robert Ervin (UC) 112
yeah i know that one but they produce some pretty good wrestlersI dont think Lawrence County(Jacob Murton) is a big wrestling school. lol

Hacker, Gator roll. Do you have an inferiority complex or something? There has been no-one deserving of the MOW from Region 3 yet. Nickle was in no way the best wrestler at the state tourney last year. He was however the best at his wt. class last year.
Big wresting schools. Duh of course most of your MOW are going to come from big wrestling schools, they produce the best wrestlers through cometition at practice. In Nky there is a reason why Holmes kids don't win state (with the exception of one). Take Golsby a few years back. How in the world did he become as good as he was. They had what 3-4 kids on the team? Who did he practice with? Who pushed him every day? I'm sure his coach didn't wrestle him he is over 200 lbs.
Your agrument however is not completely accurate. lets look at the the MOW from the 90's and 00's which can be found on this site.
2006: Jacob Murton, Lawrence County High School, Senior, 135
2005: Kyle Ruschell (Ryle) 119
2004: Jacob Murton, Lawrence County High School, Sophmore, 125 lbs
2003: Scott Cooper, Larue County High School, Senior, 140 lbs
2002: Isaac Knable, St. Xavier High School, Senior, 145 lbs
2001: Isaac Knable, St. Xavier High School, Junior, 140 lbs
2000: George King (Union) 171
1999: Josh Stepp, Sheldon Clark High School, Senior, 152 lbs
1998: Ian Horn, Woodford County High School, Senior, 160 lbs
1997: Joe Carr, Woodford County High School, Senior 145
1996: Jason Talbott (Old) 119
1995: Miguell Merritt (Hop) 185
1994: Bruce Stepp, Sheldon Clark High School, 275 lbs
1993: Don Blevins, Fern Creek, 152 lbs
1992: Willie Ennels (Hop) 160
1991: Dickey Casstleman(Dan) 130
1990: Mike Migliaccio (TC) 152
We have 17 MOW's here. 6 of which were from small wrestling schools.
Migliaccio (TC) great wrestler upset Willie Ennels (MOW should have been Curt Zinga from Camp that year) but Tates Creek was not known for wrestling, still are not a power team
Dickey Casstleman (Dan) Upset craig Burtleson Danville still not known for wreslting.
Don Blevins (Fern Creek) Moved into the district won state twice and I believe was the only representative of Fern
Creek those two years. Fern Creek has built their program since.
Jason Talbon (Old Co) Phenomenal wrestler but once again Oldham was barely on the map at this time.
Jacob Murton 2X (Lawrence Co.) If not for him and his brother moving into the district they may never have even had wrestling at Lawrence Co.
You may even be able to make an argument obout George King from Union. at this time Union was not a powerhouse. They had some down years in the 90's.
Quit whinning about Region 3 being the ugly sister of wrestling and continue to improve the surrounding programs. A program developes a MOW not an individual.
