stacked regions at certain weight classes

Topic ID: 362 | 19 Posts

what region do you think has the most packed weight class? for example, ranked in region 5 at 130 is:

Malcolm Jackson (Fern Creek)

Tom Kusnir (North Oldham)

Paul Marks (Eastern)

Trey Morlatt (Oldham County)

Taso Theoatrous (South Oldham)

also at 125 in region 5 is:

Derek Scott (South Oldham)

Ben Warner (Oldham County)

Bobby Suell (Eastern)

Derek Branch (Fern Creek)

how many other regions have really stacked weight classes? kinda random, but i was just thinkin about it

If Deon Chaney was still at 215 Region 5 215 would be a very stacked one, it would be Taylor Scherer, Aaron Wise, Deon Chaney, and Josh Young all in the same region.

it seems like region is really strong at certain weightclasses and really weak at others...not very balanced across the board like region 6 and 7 is...or is it region 7 and 8??

regoin 6 - 145

Josh Cooper (Simon Kenton)

Rob Aylor (Ryle)

Brian Wilson (Campbell Co.)

These are going to be the top three finishers at state too.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.

And that is including Courtney.

Go get em region six.

dont forget about banks, he wrestled really tough at the 5 star classic beating wilson in the finals

You're crazy, Courtney will beat all three of them.

The next time that Courtney and Banks match up may possibly be at State Duals at the end of the month. Should make for a better matchup this go-around since the Oldham Duals' match didn't prove anything other than Courtney won on a stalling call against a terribly out of shape Banks who had maybe three days of practice after football. I'm not (like many do on here) making any excuses for Pat at all just stating a fact and he lost fair and square. Neither wrestler could score on the other that day and Courtney did indeed win the match but he did not by definition "beat" him. I believe Pat has faced much, much tougher competition since then as well...so it remains to be seen. BTW AA157 I believe we can officially classify you as a Woodford groupie now...do you have posters on your dorm room walls? Tell the truth now.

AllAmerican, i know you're all big on Courtney but look at the facts. Wilson wrestled Banks to a near draw, some might argue that takedown call was not a takedown ... but i wasn't there so i'll shut up about that now. Just using such a close match with Banks that Wilson showed he can hang with Courtney in the context of Courntey beating Banks in a massacre of 1-0 ... on a stalling call in OT. Cooper beat Wilson and Aylor, and then Aylor pins one guy Cooper beats by 4 and another one that beat Cooper (same tourney). So your fluke theory on Aylor pinning the Paris Graham pin kind of discintegrates looking at that. The way i see it is there are 4 guys more than capable of beating Courtney.

I hate to break it to you, Courtney winning is not a forgone conclusion. He very well may, but its not an outrage to think otherwise.

This years 145 wieght class is the most stacked i have ever seen one been. All of these guys are very good , and at state this will be the weight class to watch.

PS ( I was just bragging on region six before, any of these guys has an equal chance to win it).

Something that could play out here is Banks or Courtney having to face one of the three sixth region guys in the second round or you have a scenario play out where one of the three region six guys has a hiccup at regions and ends up placing fourth then has to face either of the two first mentioned in the first round of state. Or Banks or Courtney is upset at region and unds up being a two or three and one of the sixth region guys has to face them early in the state tournament. Grapplin fan, Banks had one takedown that was on the edge of the mat and the refs (first year guy who had no business calling this match) did not call it. Canter argued and the other officail (experienced) ruled a takedown. I assume Bankemper argued that call since the head official did not call the takedown it could not be one and he won the arguement. The takedown was better than the illustration in the rules book. No question that the escape by Banks and subsequent takedown with time running down was good. Score could have been 5-1 which does not diminish the fact that it was a great match as I expect all of matches with all five of these guys will be. I think the worst that could happen at state would be all five to be on the same side of the bracket.

So I'm a Woodford groupie now? How do you get that? From the fact that I've lived in Woodford County all my life, grew up in the Woodford system and have worked with all of the kids in that room extensively? Because I have faith in them by saying that they are going to win state every year? I guess I could be called a Woodford groupie if that's the definition of one. I'll tell you one thing though, I'd rather be a Woodford groupie than LaRue groupie.

AA157, You take things WAAAAAYYYYYY too serious, not to worry tho' you will grow out of it when you come to the realization there are way more important things in life than high school wrestling. I meant nothin buy that at all just trying to have some fun with you and you sure don't have to defend your zeal for WC with me. But sometimes you act like everybody is attacking you when we mostly just express opinions and say things in jest...so LIGHTEN UP!!!!

I don't think I take things too seriously. I am passionate about wrestling and because of the time I have invested with these kids I defend them. I realize that there are more important things in life than high school wrestling, like the kids themselves and helping them succeed in life. I just don't like people attacking me personally, or the kids, that's all.

The guy that wins region 6 is in an advantageous position i'd say. That would put both the 2nd and 3rd place guy in the other half of the bracket. The likelihood he'd then draw both Courtney and Banks in the upper half is small. Don't they put the 1st and 2nd guys in a region in opposite halves of the bracket, or am i wrong about that ? I hope thats the case, i'd hate to see all them guys on the same side.

Pappy, i didn't see it. One of the kids told me about the match (not Wilson, he aint like that) .. so thats all i have to go off of. Although what you mention was left out of the version i got ! Banks is prime ... but legitimate takedown or not he didn't walk on Wilson. My only reason for bringing all that up is if Banks and Courtney were that close Courtney wouldn't walk on Wilson either. No complaints about the call, if you have to complain about a ref costing you a win you probably didn't deserve to win the match. :)

You're completely right about those scenarios. I can't wait to see how that class plays out.

Grapplin, I think you are right on being opposite sides of the bracket for region finishes (oversight on my part by playing the devil's advocate). You are also right about Wilson and Banks being a war. I was trying to give you my bird's eye instant replay of the events and was mainly stressing more about the two great coacjes reactions to the takedown (or not) call. IMHO who ever survives (and I do mean survives) this 145 class EARNS MOW at State.

AA157... I GIVE UP!!! Gee, You're more sensitive than my wife!!!

Yep, Murton is the best wrestler but the guy who wins 145 will have done far more than he that weekend to win the title.

I think that Harrison Courtney has 2 negatives going against him. Don't get me wrong I think he is an outstanding wrestler. But he has two things against him

1. His youth, it is very difficult for someone to win a state title as a freshman let alone in a stacked weigh class like this. Have to give the senior the edge here both Aylor and Wilson have been under the lights (big advantage)

2. Woodford does not have as strong a schedule as Ryle, Campbell, and Simon Kenton. There is a reason why These three schools do not have many undefeated state champs (I don't think any of the Cooper clan was an udefeated state champ, If any it would have been Brad). These three schools constantly seek out schools/tournaments that they can not win. This puts these wrestlers in state tournament competition every week.

Dont get me wrong Courney has some advantages.

1. Been to the state tournament 2 years

2. placed in the state tournament 2 years

3. Being coached by one of the best coaching staffs in the state

4. Has a team behind him that will keep him up for the matches

Once again just my opinion, and my wife tells me my opinion doesn't count anyway.

Another advantage, this kind of goes against both banks and Courtney. The winner of region 6 has an advantage that he stays away from the 2nd and 3rd place guys in that region at state. So, were Aylor to win region(just a random name, not a prediction) he couldn't meet Cooper or Wilson until the finals. Of course that does him little good if he draws both Banks and Courtney up in his half. But, odds would have it he'd only get one of them. So, he only would have one brutal match before the finals leaving the other 3 to slug it out. But if he got them both its great to have lost at the region 6 tourney, you become the number one seed from that region that way. Either way, someone from region 6 is going to get a break over the other guys. If the winner draws Banks and Courtney, the runner up and 3rd guy from region 6 are hooked up. Otherwise, the winner is hooked up.

Of course, it would be really lousy if 4 of those 5 guys ended up on one end of the bracket.
