Alright in my opinion Kentucky wrestling doesn't get the respect we deserve. We are a fairly good state for wrestling but yet we do not get any recongnition. If you were to pick any wrestlers that should be or should've been nationally ranked who would they be?
National Rankings and Kentucky?????

103-Jarvis Elam
160-Mitch Ervin (102-0 in the big boys weight class)
Here we go again, you know and I know we should have some guys ranked. However, in order for this to happen one of two things needs to take place...
1. beat another nationally ranked kid
2. place and beat ranked kids at a National Caliper tournament, such as the Beast, Ironman, Powerade, Nationals, Fargo etc.
Pound for pound, Mitch, Peace, Reid are the top three seniors.
I would also consider Sullivan, although he didn't win state, but 112 is generally weak (depth) and he could do well at Nationals.
Don't forget that Courtney placed third at nationals last year
If Courtney places again, he will be in the senior rankings for next year.
I think Courtney will be top 10 before he graduates.
The rankings that really matter are the "All Class" rankings. I don't think there has ever been a KY wrestler make the top 20. Anyone know of any??
Another factor against KY kids making the "All Class" rankings are the relatively few number of college wretlers from KY especially at the D-1 level.
Your telling me Joe Carr Jr. and Isaac knable were not all class ranked...Wow...Thats a shock....I know Knable wrestled for IU, or so I have been told, and Carr wrestled in D-1...
If Mitch wants to wrestle in college, Im sure he would do really well.
I talked to an old wrestler who was doing some scouting for an NAIA school, and said that Mitch was good enough, probably too good for their school, and was not exceptionally thrilled with Reid.... But best of luck to all those kids who are representing KY well.
We need more D-1 wrestlers. Heard Michigan St. was looking at some top tier KY wrestlers. That is awesome.
I thought Jacob Murton was ranked pretty high right after his showing at the Beast his Senior year.
I dont remember how high but I seem to remember he was top 15, but not sure if it was of seniors or all class. Even if it was all seniors being ranked that high means he stood a good chance of being in the all class rankings.
I thought his record from Ohio followed him during his years in KY. I seem to remember scouting reports on him always referred more about him being a a placer as a freshman in OH more than anything he accomplished in KY. It kind of puts things in perspective!
KY kids have to get out and win whereever they go and they need to go alot!
It really hurts the state that we dont have an organized state team for summer duals for high school aged kids!
It would add alot of experience for the kids but also badly needed exposure for the state and the individuals.
If Courtney places again, he will be in the senior rankings for next year.
He was ranked in his class last year but I'm not sure how high he was ranked.
Found some "All Class" archives for the last 4 years and there have been a few KY wrestlers listed:
04-05 Kyle R. 15th on Intermat
05-06 Jacob Murton 17th on Intermat, 19th on Brute
05-06 Taylor Scherer 20th on Brute
06-07 No one on either Intermat or Brute
07-08 No one on either Intermat or Brute (End of season final rankings not posted yet)
Couldn't find any archives that went further back.
I think Mitch Ervin and Travis Sullivan can do well at senior nationals this year. I think Reid has the ability to do well also. He did do well at the Beast. I think Peace is a good/great wrestler but if his performance at the Beast is any indication, he wont do well at nationals. But maybe he was off that day?
we should see after nationals..does any one know of which state champs are going? Bailey i know for sure is. Should be interesting on how he does, what does everybody else think?
I think Bailey can do well also. He is big and athletic. If he keeps shooting those double legs then he will get some attention and make some noise!
As far as a National attention you obviously have to do well during the school season, but to get that national honor doing well at freestyle and greco nationals is probably the best way.

Bailey is athletic, but he will get dragged when he hits one of those Penn/ Iowa heavyweights with 8% bodyfat, the Jordan Whiting look alikes in better shape, with actual technique. He'll go 1-2 or 0-2.
i think jon voth is going to senior nationals.

I hope Baily proves you wrong. But have you seen collegiate heavyweights? They arent all Jordan Whitings. Bailey's physique compares favorable to 95% of the college heavyweights.

well mason is getting looked at by michigan state and other d-1 schools and he's the highest kentucky placer at the beast
go reid! show them what us ky wrestlers are about.
Wrestling USA magazine has Courtney ranked 18th in his class this month. I didn't see anyone else from KY though which surprised me not seeing Irvin and Reid in there.

What about David Lieberum :-D

I'm sure I spelled it correctly last time but...yeah I'm an idiot :-D
I don't have the archives of the rankings, but I know that Joe Carr Jr. was nationally ranked as a high school senior. In fact, he wrestled for team USA in the Dapper Dan Classic (USA vs. Pennsylvania). Unfortunately, Joe Heskett caught him late in the match in a head/arm and pinned Joe. Heskett went on to a solid, all-american college career and Carr went on to star at West Virginia.

I know I'm picking hairs but he couldn't have wrestled Joe Heskett in the USA vs Pennsylvania dual because Heskett went to Walsh Jesuit in Ohio. Also Carr Jr wrestled 145 his senior year while Heskett was at 160. The reason I know is there used to be a picture in the Woodford wrestling room of the Dream Team members from Joe's senior year. Names like Joe Heskett, Cael Sanderson, Jamarr Billman, and a few other big names if I could remember them. Nevertheless Joe was ranked first in the country his senior year and was on the Dream Team like you said. He sort of lived up to his ranking by finishing second in both Junior (freestyle in Fargo, ND) and Senior (folkstyle in Cleveland, OH) Nationals.
I believe that is the same team one of my old buddies, Mike Zadick, was on.
That sounds about right, I think Mike Zadick was on the poster too. How do/did you know him? He's obviously done very well, definitely in the thick of things to go to the Olympics (already a 2x World Team Member and World Silver Medalist).
Im from Montana. He was in the same grade as me from a different school but we of course were around each other quite a bit between high school and freestyle during the spring and summer.
I know Zadick too. I met him at an Iowa camp. He is a really cool guy and great wrestler.
Joe Jr. was beaten by Brian Burrows from Pennsylvania. Burrows signed with Oklahoma State out of high school, but never wrestled for them because he got into some trouble.

I'm routing for you, i'm sure you will do well.
Is Zach Poulton really going 152 at nationals or is that a typo on the website?
i think bailey is goint to be a froce to be reckoned with.
I would be interesting to see a whiting-like heavy with good technique. Bailey has a nice blast double and could use it on anyone.
Some perspective. Ervin wrestled and beat Tanner Wedding from Indiana a couple times this season, all by 1 point. Wedding was handled the first round of state here in In, 11-6 by Atwood. Atwood went on to take 4th. The kid who won, Andrew Howe, who is ranked nationally top 3/4 in every major pole teched/pinnned every single wrestler he's faced in the past two years except for the finals this year where he only won 22-9.
Oh, and Atwood (the guy who easily handled Wedding, who was pretty much dead even with Ervin) was teched by Howe 23-5, with Howe not breaking a sweat.
Don't get me wrong I think Bailey has huge potential and could be very good on the college level if he learns a little more technique, all he needs are a couple moves that he can hit on anyone because of his strength. However at this years nationals I don't think he'll place. He'll beat a couple kids on his strength but that won't be enough on someone who can weather the storm and beat him when he gets tired.
It isn't a good comparison of how bad Ervin beat Wedding. They are first cousins and probably train together in the offseason. This allows each to learn how the other wrestles. Both are great wrestlers though.
Im not sure how accurate that perspective is either.
I saw Ervin and Wedding wrestle a close match at Mater Dei. It was close but I thought the reason was because they know each other so well from wrestling each other so much. I think Mitch wins 10 out of 10 bouts and I dont mean that to slight the Wedding kid, I thought he looked good too! I'm not saying Mitch could beat Howe, the kids legitimate top 5 in the country, but I think he could have wrestled into the night at IN state!
Howe is the best wrestler in Indiana, all weights! He deserves the recognition because he attends and does well at nationals year in and year out.
Howe is a beast, teched fall Cooper Samuels in the second period last year

Wow, that's unreal. Haha, Samuels is a beast.

They weren't in the same weight class last year.
Where did this happen?
Earlier in the year, Thats why Cooper went up to 160.

Are you serious, as long as baileys double blast keeps hittin and he stays agressive I easily see him placing. I know theres not that many have weights out there with the speed and strength of bailey.

...back by popular demand. Dig it. Dig it real hard.
Howe and Samuels never wrestled during the season last year, and neither were really challenged.
They wrestled last summer at freestyle state and Howe did in fact tech him, 6-0, 6-0.

The key words in your post are "as long as". I agree if he can continue hitting his blast double he will beat some kids, but what happens when he wrestles someone who looks like Jordan Whiting but can wrestle like Mitch Ervin? After the first match people are going to figure him out. I hope Bailey places at nationals, I really do, but since people were talking about it on here I thought I'd give my opinion.

I was pretty sure they didn't wrestle in folkstyle.

I stand corrected, you guys are good, and right that Joe was caught and pinned at the Dapper Dan by Burrows, not Heskett. (Getting old and the memory is slipping). What I do know is that Joe was nationally ranked and wrestled for team USA that year.
