Does anyone know what the process is like, and what it takes to become a offical in Kentucky, i have just graduated and want to still be involved in this wonderful sport?

If some of you High School Wrestlers or alumni in KY would like to make some extra money over the spring/summer with USA Wrestling as officials. Please fill out the attached form. KY USAW will pay the $25 membership fee. In return we ask them to help officiate at least 2 to 3 tournaments. They will be paid $50, USAW referee shirt and free concessions.

All the tournaments will be folkstyle format. Our State qualifier for Fargo will be Freestyle/Greco

How to Become a Licensed Official

The KHSAA is ALWAYS looking for men and women who want to return something to their school and community by becoming a licensed athletic official. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, a high school graduate, in good physical condition, and able to make decisions on their feet and stick to them.

We currently license officials in 11 different sports: baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, soccer, softball (fast and slow pitch), swimming and diving, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.

To become an official, you'll need to fill out an application, pay a licensing fee, and take an open-book rules test. Once you are licensed, you'll need to attend annual rules meeting that will introduce you to the latest rule changes and interpretations and become an active member of a local officials' association.

If you like what you have read, and are

ready to license,

Guidebook on the KHSAA web site,

Just to be clear, we don't have to send the $25 dues fee with the application? Also, after we send the application, will we receive the complete rulebook? Finally, do you have a schedule for summer tournaments?

Just the application. With your license you will recieve the rule book or read it here.  http://www.themat.com/forms/2008Rulebook.pdf

Thanks for the information! However, you said the tournaments would be folkstyle and the rulebook you linked to is for freestyle/GR wrestling. Where could I find a folkstyle rulebook so I can familiarize myself with all the technicalities?

USA Wrestling follows NFHS Folkstyle Rules with some modifications. 1.) No 45 min rule in effect. 2.) Weight classes vary. Other then that, it is High School Folkstyle rules. Your coach should have last years KHSAA wrestling rule book.
