Braves ready for new season

Advocate Staff Report [email protected]

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

The state champion wrestling team will kick off their 2008-09 season this Saturday, November 29th, at the Braves gym. They will be hosting their first holiday dual meet with teams from Tennessee, Illinois and Kentucky. The teams take to the mat at 11:00, and the crowd will witness some tough competition.

There will be a silent auction held during the day with craft items, baked goods, and a wide assortment of goodies offered to the highest bidders. The tickets will be $5.00 for students and adults to get into the gym. BBQ and other scrumptious food will be available at the concession stand during the day.

Coach Dennis Walls stated that his team will be tough again this year! With the return of the Ervin boys- Caleb, Luke and Isaac- as well as the Thomas brothers- Keaton and Isaac- a sixth consecutive regional championship is more of a sure thing than a possibility! Aaron Carr and Tim McKenney will supply some muscle in their weight classes. Another pair of brothers, junior Hunter Ratley and freshman Austin Ratley, will command control of the mat during the year Thomas Buckman will step up this year as an experienced 160 pounder who will replace graduate, Mitch Ervin.

Other wrestlers who Coach Walls feels will dominate this year are seniors Neal Reburn, Levi Griggs, Matt Young and Matt Burke. Tim McKenney will take control in the 189 lb weight class following in the footsteps of Diante Wright. Jimmy Jones will be tough at 171 lbs hoping to fill the shoes of graduate, Jarrod Burke.

Jakup Baker, Randy Minton, and Chris Abel are all capable of capturing multiple wins this year in their weight classes. The Union County team is fortunate to have two men deep in most of the 14 weight classes this year. It

Those weren't from my paper (other than the North Hardin results on the HS Results forum).

I just posted the ones I found.

Every LaRue County schedule I've seen has NO mention of the WCI or the 5-Star. Don't know what's up.

Grapplers open new season today

Published: Saturday, December 6, 2008 4:10 AM CST

The 2008-09 high school wrestling season gets under way today with several of the southern Pennyrile area teams taking part in the Hopkinsville High School Orange and Black Tournament at Tiger Gym.

First-year Hoptown coach Willie Ennels, a former state champion for the Tigers, feels his team is among the top eight in Region 1.

AAAAAAA OUR ARTICLE IS TERRIBLE

MY LIFE IS OVER

I hope the leaf chronicle and the fort campbell courier do an alot better job. And are at least slightly more accurate

So LaRue isn't going to WCI or the 5 Star Classic this year?

They are tired of getting beat at the real tournaments. Its ok though wrestling pudd teams will never get them a state title

Concerning LaRue County:

Young team, yep and not going to WCI or 5 Star.  I am not sure you could call who they are wrestling this December as pud teams, but I have been known to be wrong.  December schedule includes:  Seneca (#5 in duals in state) saw them at Oldham; this week at Ryle they face Trinity, Union Co; Campbell County, Ryle, and Grundy, VA; next week they have their regional duals in which they wrestle John Hardin (top 10 in state of KY) they wrestle two duals on Friday and five duals on Saturday then travel on Sunday to Pigeon Forge, TN where they were invited to attend their true Super Duals where they will wrestle the defending state champions from Georgia in 4A; the defending state champions from Alabama (4A); three of the top five private schools from TN.  They wrestle 5 duals on Monday and five duals on Tuesday.  So in five days they will wrestle a top 10 team from KY, three of the top five private schools from TN; the defending state champ from Georgia and Alabama.  In five days they will wrestle that competition in and rack up 17 duals.

They start two 8th graders, 6 freshmen, two juniors and four seniors.  Not sure their young guys could turn around and wrestle in WCI without a break.  Oh yea, then on January 3rd they will dual Trinity and Union.

Yea, I guess you could call that wrestling puds and this schedule will never get their young guys ready for a run in February.  Or, maybe Canter knows what he is doing.  I think he has been pretty successful in the past.  His challenge this year is getting his young guys ready for state duals and then regions and a state tournament.

I do know what he is thinking as I have talked to him once or twice in the past two months.  This schedule in his mind is pretty tough and will give his guys some decent competition against kids they don't have to see later in the year but still prepare them for a run.

Call his schedule wrestling puds if you want.  Not sure I would, but like I said, I have been wrong in the past and could be now.

Yea alright we'll see how many of those state champ schools they actually wrestle, you can schedule all the teams in the nation, but its only going to matter when you do something. Ok big coach prove me wrong, schedule your teams, wrestle the heck out of them good luck.

Tough field gives Ryle early test on road to state

Ryle Raider Rumble

By Kevin Goheen

Enquirer contributor

The final round of his team's own wrestling tournament reminded Tim Ruschell of the final day of February's state tournament. It's not a memory the Ryle head coach wanted to relive, but it is one he will be able to use.

The Raiders were in second place of the Ryle Raider Rumble on Saturday, trailing only eventual champion Grundy (Va.), as the final place matches were to begin. Instead of holding on to that lead, however, Ryle was overcome by Louisville Trinity, the state's top-ranked team, and had to settle for third place in the 16-team tournament.

Grundy won the tournament for the second straight year after finishing third in 2006 in its first trip to Ryle. The Golden Wave had six champions as part of their total of 338.5 points. Trinity finished with 279.5 points, and Ryle had 275. Campbell County was fourth with 222.5 points.

Trinity had three champions, while Ryle's Jake Bradford was the only Northern Kentucky wrestler to win a title, at 189 pounds.

Of the 11 Ryle wrestlers who took part in a final match, only three won and earned points for the Raiders. Trinity, by contrast, had seven wrestlers win final matches, providing enough points for the Shamrocks to overtake Ryle.

"We got to see what we have to work on," said Ruschell. "It's all a learning experience. I try to tell these kids that it's all practice, that the medals here don't mean a thing compared to when you're at the state tournament. We're going to be all right. They're all going to learn."

Six of the teams ranked in the state's top seven, according to Kentuckywrestling.com, competed in the tournament. Trinity was ranked No. 1, with Union County No. 2, Ryle third and Campbell County No. 4.

Ryle finished as the runner-up to Union County at last season's state tournament. That performance has the Raiders believing they can win the title this season.

The depth of quality in Saturday's tournament showed itself in the 125-pound division. Ryle junior Austin Palmer, who finished second in the state last season at 103 pounds and came into this tournament ranked No. 3 in the state with an 8-0 record, lost to Tyler Clark of South Dearborn 7-6 in the round-robin portion of the tournament, relegating him to the consolation rounds. Clark went on to reach the finals before losing to Derek Anderson of Grundy.

Ryle Junior Michael Osborne, ranked No. 2 in the state, beat No. 1-ranked and two-time defending state champion Matt Zarth of Lexington Henry Clay in the 119-pound semifinals. Osborne got a two-point takedown with 27.5 seconds left in the first one-minute overtime period to defeat Zarth, 10-8. Osborne finished fourth in the state at 112 pounds last season.

"I've been wrestling for six years, and I've never had a win like that," said Osborne. "It's my biggest win by far, but I can't dwell on that. It just as easily could have gone the other way. I'm going to see him again."

Osborne hurt his right ankle during the semifinal match, an injury that affected him in the championship match, a 9-1 loss to Jeremy Hurley of Grundy.

Hurley lost to Zarth in the 119-pound finals of last year's Ryle tournament and finished second at last season's Virginia state tournament in the 112-pound division. Hurley was one of six returning wrestlers for Grundy who finished in the top seven at the Virginia state meet.

Jaguars off to solid start on the mats

By James Weber

[email protected]

UNION - The wrestling team at Cooper High School has some of the most accomplished athletes of any program at the new school.

But there is plenty of new blood, too, so head coach Dave Barnes expects the Jaguars to have the same growing pains as every other team there.

There haven't been many so far as the Jaguars won three of their first four dual matches through Dec. 10.

After beating Scott and Conner to open the season, Cooper lost to Cincinnati St. Xavier's "B" team, then beat Boone County 48-36 in a battle of fledgling programs.

"We have growing pains, but we're doing OK," Barnes said. "We're starting to come together as a team. They're coming from other schools, and that's what we're focusing on, getting everybody on the same page. We're going to try to get some wins and get kids recruiting for us."

Cooper won six of the eight matches contested against the Rebels, with all eight decided by pin.

The Jaguars trailed by 18 early, but claimed the last five matches of the meet, from the 130 through 152 weight classes.

The last was a first-period pin by Andy Gilliland at 152, which clinched the team win. He's been in the final match in each meet so far.

"It was a pretty good feeling because it feels like the whole gym's got your back," said Gilliland, a Ryle product. "It was a good feeling, at the same time I was kind of nervous."

Two grappling veterans paved the way for the Jaguars' late comeback. TJ Bates (130) and Matt Brewer (145) both won by fall. Brewer's win gave Cooper a 42-36 lead.

Both wrestlers have state meet experience competing for Conner.

"We've been doing pretty well as a first-year school," Brewer said. "We have a lot of first-year wrestlers but we're doing pretty good overall... I teach them what I know and help them however I can."

"No doubt, TJ and Matt are going to be leaders but there's also room for growth," Barnes said. "We're all starting from scratch."

Barnes, a Ryle assistant before taking the Cooper job, said eighth-grader Lane Jones will win a state title in his career. Jones pulled out a tough win over Boone's Jordan Bernard at 135 with a late pin.

The Jaguars enjoyed the late rally, and were happy to win for teammate Matt Lay, who was injured in the fourth match of the night and taken to a hospital.

It turned out to be an upper back strain, and Lay was expected to be back on the mat this week.

At the time, it was a potential neck injury and the match was delayed 25 minutes as a trainer kept Lay's head still as a precaution.

"It's upsetting, but he'll push through it and it gets us pumped up to fire back at them," Brewer said.

Cooper had six top-eight medalists at the Ryle Rumble Dec. 13, which had the top five teams in Kentucky and the Virginia state champs.

Bates finished third at 130. Lane Jones, Logan Jones, Jake Penick, Gilliland and Christian Caddell also medalled.

Cooper will be in the NKAC championships Dec. 19-20.

"I'd like to be in the top four," said Barnes "It will take a group effort and strategy on our end. We have holes in our lineup."

Trinity coach grapples with expectations | In 1st year, Brown has No. 1 team

By Jason Frakes | [email protected]

Richard Brown feels as if he's in a no-win situation -- not that he's complaining.

But the wrestling coach at Trinity High School knows the predicament of a first-year coach taking over a program that is ranked No. 1 in the state.

"If we lose this year, it's because I wasn't good enough to win," Brown said. "If we win, 'Oh, well. They were supposed to win.' It's a double-edged sword for me, but I understand the position I'm in as a first-year coach. And I know I'm blessed to be in the position I'm in."

Trinity is one of two Jefferson County schools -- joining No. 7 Seneca -- ranked among the top 10 in the state according to Kentuckywrestling.com. (The Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association's rankings have been discontinued.)

The Shamrocks, who finished fourth in last year's State Meet, have a loaded squad with four wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their weight divisions -- freshman John Fahy (103), junior Myron Bradbury (112), junior Brad Hitchings (171) and senior Jordan Whiting (heavyweight).

Junior Grant Ohlmann (140 or 145), junior Josh Lewis (189) and senior Brock Messina (215) also are considered top contenders for state titles. Whiting and Messina have not yet joined the team after helping Trinity's football squad win the Class 6-A championship last week.

Brown, trying to lead Trinity to its first state title since 1989, replaced Ed Rudolph during the offseason.

"I think we have the potential to achieve great things," Brown said. "I'm still nervous because the stars have to align and we have to keep our grades and avoid injuries and all that. But, yeah, we're on track right now."

Brown said No. 2 Union County, No. 3 Ryle and No. 4 Campbell County should be considered Trinity's top competition for a team championship. Union County is the two-time defending state champion. Campbell County won the last of its three state titles in 2004.

A brief look at other top teams from the Louisville area:

Seneca lost former state champion Elliott Martin to graduation but should be strong again at the lightweight classes behind Jeff Warra (112), Rayontez Harper (125), Alex Henderson (130) and Ricky Wright (140).

No. 12 Oldham County has a star at 215 in Ichiro Chiba, who is coming off a football season during which he earned All-State honors as a linebacker.

No. 16 St. Xavier took a major hit from graduation but has the fifth-ranked wrestler at 135 in sophomore John Lampe.

Rayshawn Graham (135), Antwan Fields (145) and Alex Meads (171) lead the way for No. 18 Iroquois.

No. 20 South Oldham will be led by senior Ryan Houchens, who is ranked No. 1 at 189 after finishing as the state runner-up last year.

No. 21 Eastern features senior Justin Davis, who is ranked No. 1 at 140 after winning the state title at 135 last year.

Junior Dan Thomson, ranked No. 6 at 140, paces No. 22 North Oldham.

No. 25 Pleasure Ridge Park lost a defending state champion when senior Dakoda Choate (152) moved to Indiana. Senior Dusty Stengel is ranked No. 3 at 152.

No. 28 Bullitt Central has the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 160 in Jeremiah Walls.

Steve Willbanks is ranked No. 5 at 145, leading the way for No. 31 Moore.

No. 32 Central has a top heavyweight in Mister Cobble, who has committed to play football at the University of Kentucky.

Second to None

By TOMMY DILLARD | Sports Writer

Ever since Dickie Walls launched the Calloway County wrestling program six years ago, it's been one first after another for the Laker grapplers.

From his team's first varsity match in 2005 to its first state competitor in 2006 to sending three wrestlers to state last season, Walls has watched his program ascend from fledgling to region competitor.

But for all the exciting firsts the coach has come to expect with the start of practice each fall, this one was surprisingly bittersweet.

Campbell Co. tops familiar foe | Well-acquainted Camels, Pioneers both go to state

By Marc Hardin | Enquirer contributor

Familiar foes faced off in the final wrestling match to decide the championship of Saturday's marathon, nine-hour Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference duals.

In the end, Campbell County wound up on top at the 11-team, round-robin meet, topping Simon Kenton 51-20 at Holmes.

The Camels, coached by Mike Bankemper, won 10 of 14 matches to subdue the Pioneers, coached by former Campbell County wrestler and Camels assistant coach Jim Wilbers, who wrestled and coached at Campbell under Bankemper.

Wilbers and Bankemper have remained friends and their teams wrestle each other often.

"These teams know each other very well. The kids know each other. So, no, there are no secrets, just good wrestling," said Bankemper.

His Camels finished 4-0 Saturday and improved to 13-1 in dual meets while earning an automatic berth in January's state dual-meet championships.

Simon Kenton, 4-1 on Saturday, also won a state dual-meet berth with its NKAC runner-up finish. The Pioneers improved to 8-5 in dual meets.

"Second place is good. It's a morale booster," said Wilbers, who earned his 98th career dual-meet victory Saturday in this his fifth season as Simon Kenton head coach. "This is good inspiration heading into the Christmas break."

Among the winners in the final match were Campbell County 145-pound junior Korey Shotwell, a state meet finalist last season, and 152-pound senior Dusty Brown, a third-place finisher at last season's state meet.

Brown, who transferred from Simon Kenton to Campbell County after his sophomore year, won all three of his matches Saturday and remained unbeaten on the season after defeating an old friend in the final match.

Brown, 4-0 after missing three weeks with an injured shoulder, defeated Simon Kenton junior Michael Beers.

"We've been friends since the sixth grade. I played youth football with him, so I know he's a pretty good athlete," said Brown, who needs to regularly ice his shoulder and take anti-inflammatory medicine. "I thought I did pretty good. My shoulder was sore after each match. But I'm going to wrestle through it, and it's going to be a good recovery."

Also winning for the Camels on Saturday were freshman Garth Yenter (103 pounds), senior Caleb Schneider (125), junior John Hale (130), junior Daniel Zink, sophomore Nick Meirose (171), junior Colin Friedly (189) and senior Jacob Ilig (215).

Schneider improved his record to 11-3.

"We like beating Simon Kenton. A lot of guys know each other and their coach used to help coach us," Schneider said. "Plus, this gives us a good chance to look at the competition from the region and get to know how they wrestle."

Among Simon Kenton winners in Saturday's final match were heavyweight Colin Patrick, 112-pounder Jared Yocum and Steven Norbury, who improved to 14-1 at 135 pounds.

Campbell County, Simon Kenton and Ryle, which did not travel with a full team, were Saturday's pool winners.

The Raiders, missing wrestlers competing at the Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches' Association Holiday Classic at Oak Hills, lost to the Camels and Pioneers in Saturday's second round, and finished the day 3-2.

First-year Cooper, drawing strength from wrestlers with previous experience at Conner and Ryle, was the top second-place team coming out of pool play and finished fourth at the duals with a record of 4-1.

Dixie Heights finished fifth, followed by Conner, Scott, Boone County, Newport, first-year Brossart and host Holmes.

Holmes wrestler Mark Jones, a returning state qualifier, improved to 11-0 at 189 pounds.

RYLE: Senior Will Hogben won the 171-pound championship as Ryle placed third in the Division I grouping at the Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association Glenn Sample Classic tournament at Oak Hills High School.

Seven Raiders placed in the 28-team event. Senior Jack Bradford nearly gave the Raiders a second individual champion but lost a 6-5 decision in the 189-pound title match against Andrew Tumlin of Harrison. Tumlin is a three-time state qualifier in Ohio, including finishing third at last season's Ohio's Division I state tournament.

Harrison won the Division I team title with 138 points. Ryle's 124 points left it three behind runner-up Princeton.

WHHS has sights set on breakout season

By Chase Sewell

December 20, 2008

The Western Hills wrestling team rested on the shoulders of two dedicated grapplers last season. By the time the Region 7 tournament came around, those two were the only ones competing.

This season the Wolverines are 14 strong and looking to rebuild a program that looked to be on the brink of collapse.

The two that WERE the team last year are still around and now senior Josh Bell and junior Mark Davis lead the team as captains. And under head coach Derek Nesselrode " who has been co-head coach since 2002 " the Wolverines are looking toward a breakout season.

"We're bigger than we've ever been before," Nesselrode said. "We have almost all the weight classes filled which is a new thing for us. We have a lot of tough kids that we expect to make some noise and get a few to state this year."

Though most of the team is made up of first-year wrestlers, Nesselrode and his coaching staff are excited about the youth they have and the future ahead. His assistants Adam Bowser and Sean Wilkinson have been key in getting the kids out for the team and teaching them the fundamentals.

"We've had a lot of help from coach Wilkinson who is an assistant with the football team," Nesselrode said. "He's been an instrumental part in recruiting and getting a lot of the football players out. That has really gotten our numbers up. The kids that he's bringing out are all freshmen we expect them all to be here for four years and do really good things for us."

Those football players that have joined the team are freshman Christian Wilkins, junior Ryan Richardson, sophomore Kenny Holbrook and freshman Joshua Slone.

"We're happy to have these numbers out here," he added. "We have a new coach in Adam Bowser. He's offering a lot of insight and helping a lot getting the kids ready."

Bell and Davis are the Wolverines' best chance at getting state qualifiers this year. Both finished fifth in the regional tournament last season, just shy of qualifying. Bell went to the state tournament at 160 his sophomore year finishing 0-2.

According to the latest KentuckyWrestling.com rankings, Davis is No. 23 in the 171-pound weight class while Bell sits at No. 19 in 189.

"We don't pay a lot of attention to those rankings," Nesselrode said. "We just come out here and do what we do. The whole team has really gotten off to a really strong start. Josh is undefeated and Mark has lost only one match.

"They've set their own expectations," he added. "Both of them want to go to state and both have set goals to win the region."

Another standout for the Wolverines this season should be freshman heavyweight Christian Wilkins.

"He wrestled (at Elkhorn Middle) with the Franklin County program, so he came in with a lot of experience," Nesselrode said. "We're working with him and trying to build his strength up so he can deal with the bigger guys out there. He's doing very well and I expect good things from him."

The Wolverines, though young, are still competing in a few tough tournaments this season.

"We're in the WCI (Woodford County Invitational) and a couple of the other tougher tournaments this year," Nesselrode said. "That is kind of the benchmark on how the guys will do against statewide competition. We've already been up against LaRue (County) and some of the other tougher programs in the state. The more experienced guys have held their own."

Greenwave wrestlers take another dual meet at home

By Bill Rosacker | Messenger Staff

Even though the weather was icy enough to close school, the Meade County Greenwave wrestlers were red hot in the dual meet against Central Hardin and Fort Knox Dec. 17.

In the opening match, the Greenwaves simply overpowered the Central Hardin Bruins 51-29. Of 14 different weight classes, the Greenwaves lost only five matches.

Early in the season, Coach Bob Davis has melded together a powerful squad consisting of seasoned warriors and new talent into a force to be reckoned with in Region 3. Ably assisted by Eli Dix and Josh Trotter, the coaching staff has taught the new wrestlers how to win, and more importantly, how to improve week to week.

Wrestlers winning against Central were Astin Curtis, 112 lbs., by pin; James Childress 119 lbs., by pin; Brandon Scott, 125 lbs., by pin; Joey Carter, 135 lbs., by pin; Ethan Medley, 145 lbs., by pin; Zack Uhlig, 152 lbs., 7-6; Junior Mason, 171 lbs., by pin; Brandon Simota, 184 lbs., by pin; and Tyler Crow, 215 lbs., by pin.

In the second half of the dual meet, Meade County squared off against Fort Knox. While the final team score favored the Greenwaves, it should be noted the Eagles did not have a full squad and had to forfeit five of the 14 matches because they had no wrestlers available in the five weight classes. Of the nine weight classes that wrestled, Meade won four and Fort Knox won five.

Meade County wrestlers who won against Fort Knox were Brandon Scott, 125 lbs., 7-0; Garrett Kenealy, 132 lbs., by pin; Joey Carter, 135 lbs., by pin; and Zack Uhlig, 152 lbs.. Ethan Medley, Junior Mason, Brandon Simota, Tyler Crow and Chas Nevitt all won by forfeit because they had no opponents.

The varsity was not the only squad with success. The junior varsity also wrestled during this meet and many of their wrestlers were successful. Every sports program has to have a feeder program and wrestling is no exception. Wrestling is a little different in that 7th- and 8th-grade boys, if their skill level is appropriate, wrestle on the JV squad.

Flyers, Wolverines send five to finals

By Chase Sewell

State Journal Sports Writer

It was a banner day for local wrestling as Franklin County sent four to the finals and Western Hills sent another in the Capital City Classic at Franklin County Saturday.

The Flyers came away with the only local championship from Josh Bruning at 160-pounds.

"It feels pretty good, you know, a home tournamentI'm not going to get beat on my home turf," Bruning said. "I came out and did what I said I was going to do. I beat all those kids that I wrestled today, but they always give me close matches and I stepped up today and did something I had never done beforeI took shots, I usually wrestle defensive."

Oldham County took the team title among the 20 teams in attendance with 194.5 points. Henry Clay was second with 150 while Harrison County came in third with 140. Franklin County was fifth overall with 131.5 points while Western Hills was 13th with 42.5 points.

Bruning took on Najee Calderon from Bryan Station in the 160-pound finals. Both grapplers were even in the first period, ending tied at 0-0. In the second period, Bruning started in the bottom position and got an escape to take a 1-0 lead into the final period. Bruning padded his lead in the third with a pair of near-fall points.

"He wrestled phenomenally," FCHS coach Zac Donnelly said. "He has been more offensive-minded and he has been drilling more offensive moves. It's showing out on the mat. He has impressed me a lot with his work ethic. Getting beat a couple of weeks ago kind of inspired him to start working hard in the mat room."

Bruning went 4-0 on the day.

"My biggest match was probably the semifinal match because it would have gone into overtime," Bruning said about his match against Harrison County's Seth Coy, "but in those last two seconds I swept his leg and tripped him back."

Four Flyers made the finals in their weight class and all except Bruning fell in their championship matches. Bryan Thompson (130), Tyler Wright (189) and Aaron Mayes (heavyweight) all earned second place. Daniel Mauser was a third-place finisher at 125.

"Overall, we wrestled pretty well, putting four guys into the finals and one champ," Donnelly said. "We would have placed as a team had we had our full lineup with Wood (Smith, 135) and (Kyle) Marston (103). They both are recovering from injuries.

WHHS' lone finalist, Josh Bell at 171, was pinned by Brandon Barnett of Harrison County to place second.

"I guess the guys did OK," WHHS coach Derek Nesselrode said. "The lower weight classes had some trouble and made some pretty early exits. As a whole, I am pretty pleased with them.

"We have a lot of work to do and a long way to go before regionals."

It was a short day for most of Western Hills' wrestlers with all but Bell, Mark Davis, Ken Holbrook, Christian Wilkins and Hawk Mangan going winless on the day.

Wilkins (HWT) and Mangan (125) both went 1-2 on the day.

Bell was the standout for the Wolverines with a 3-1 record that included wins over FCHS' Jeremy Gardner " ranked No. 9 in the state " and seventh-ranked Nick Leddy from Dunbar.

One of the biggest matches of the day was against Gardner. The two had not met this season. Bell jumped ahead in the first period, 2-0, with a takedown. In the second, Gardner got a reversal for two points to tie it up. The third period began with Bell getting an escape point. Then he was called for stalling to send the match to overtime. In overtime, Bell got a takedown to win in sudden death and leaped to his feet in celebration.

"It was good," Nesselrode said. "It was one of those matches that gives coaches heart attacks. Those two guys match up very well.

"It was mentally more important than anything," he added. "Heading into region with the win over Gardner and a win over Leddy, that was very important. It kind of removed any of those doubts that he had in his mind. It gives him a lot of momentum going into the region."

Both coaches agreed that 171 was by far the toughest weight class in the tournament and in Region 7.

"That was the toughest weight class here at the tournament," Donnelly said. "When the returning region champ (Gardner) is a six seed, it's just a stacked weight class."

Davis was 2-2 at 189 and made it all the way to the semifinals where he lost to Franklin County's Tyler Wright by decision, 9-7.

First-year wrestler Holbrook went 3-2 at 215 for the Wolverines.

"He's coming around," Nesselrode said. "He's still making some mistakes. We have to work the bumps out but I think he'll be ready for regionals. It's his first year out and we still have three more years with him. He's going to have a great career here."

For Franklin County, Thompson cruised through his first two matches but hit a wall in Steven Norbury from Simon Kenton who is ranked third in the state. Norbury shot out to a 5-2 lead in the first period and it proved too much to overcome for Thompson as Norbury was cruising, ahead 13-2, before pinning Thompson with seven seconds left in the third.

"We knew Norbury was going to be tough," Donnelly said. "He is ranked in the top three or four. That's the level Bryan wants to be at. He's got some work to do in the next couple of weeks."

Mayes (3-1) also eased into the finals at heavyweight to take on a familiar foe in Nathan Grey from Tates Creek. Most of the match was posturing until Mayes got an escape point in the second period. Mayes was trying to hold onto his slim lead when the referee called him for unnecessary roughness, tying the match. Grey then got an escape for the 2-1 win.

"Mayes did really well. He beat the Henry Clay kid (Jake Cooper)," Donnelly said. "He's always in close matches with him. And then the one-point match in the finals that comes down to a pair of questionable calls(the referee) calls him for stalling and then the cross-face for being unnecessarily rough. That could have gone either way. I think you should warn them first before you pop them for a point."

Wright was a surprise finalist for the Flyers. He was 3-1 with a close win over Davis and a pair of pins.

"One-eighty-nine was an awfully tough weight class," Donnelly said. "I think it was the first time he had been in the finals this year. If he keeps turning it up I expect him to go to the state tournament, place in the top four in the region. I would like to see him push himself a little harder in practice."
