Zeppa wins at Mustang Invitational
By Mickey Patterson
GOSHEN - Antonio Zeppa and Bryan Ford carried the banner for local wrestlers Saturday as they won individual titles at the North Oldham High School Mustang Classic wrestling tourney.
Zeppa, from NOHS, won the 112-pound title with a 12-4 win over Steve Vaughn of SOHS. Ford, from SOHS, took the 145-pound championship with a 21-13 win over Eddric Beasley of Louisville Central.
Seneca took the team title with 184.5 points, just ahead of Harrison County with 179.5 points. SOHS, which gave its three top wrestlers — Daniel Murner, Derek Scott and Taylor Scherer — the day off, was fourth with 133.5 points while NOHS was sixth with 99.5 points.
“It went pretty good,” NOHS coach Kip Connin said. “We didn’t have a bad day at all as a team and had some kids really do well. Our parents just did a great job of putting the tournament on. I think most of the coaches and the wrestlers left happy with how it went. We expect it to keep on growing.”
NOHS had two other wrestlers take second as Antonio Zeppa fell to Elliott Martin of Seneca 5-2 in a hotly contested 103-pound final. Tom Kusnir fell to Zach Poulton of Seneca 8-1 in the 135-pound title match.
The Mustangs also got a strong day from Jerry Wassell at 103 as he beat Pat Wimbleduff of Caldwell County 13-6 to win third.
NOHS’ Davis Dudley was fourth at 119, falling to Billy Cahill of Doss by pin in the consolation finals.
In addition to Ford, SOHS had several wrestlers place led by Vaughn in second at 112. Ben Greco and Logan Butler both won third for the Dragons.
Greco beat John Thomas of Central 11-9 in the 152 consolation finals while Butler beat Austin Murdock of Harrison County 8-3 to win third in the heavyweight division.
Taking fourth for the Dragons were Shawn Ford, as he fell to Daniel Fuller of Seneca by pin at 125, and Cody Hall, who lost a tough 5-4 match in the 135 consolation finals to Darren Jennings of Seneca.
At 140, Brian Knight fell to Jerry Ledford of North Hardin and at 171, Ryan Houchens fell 9-5 to Curt Martin of Caldwell County.
Both SOHS and NOHS will move on to the regional meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ballard.
SOHS, ranked No. 3 in the state, will chase its fifth straight regional crown and will battle with Oldham County, Seneca, Eastern and Fern Creek for the team title.
“We think it will be a strong regional and we think we have a chance to do well,” Connin said. “We’re going into it with some kids situated pretty strong and looking to do well. We’re hoping to move five on to the state and maybe more this year.”
