I'm not too sure if Dan Thomson will be able to go 135...
I'm not too sure if Dan Thomson will be able to go 135...
Yeah I've heard from a teammate he barely makes 140
Based on what I've seen, TJ Schuyler - OC, should be in the mix at 103. Also, you need to check the alpha master reports - Jo Rupp can't go 103.

I hope he is able, he has already beat the #2 rank and has a good chance at placing very high. Not that he can't do similar at 140, but it is quite stacked.

I haven't been a coach for a few years, so I do not have access to the alpha master reports. However, an Eastern wrestler already told me to move him back up to 112. Last week I had TJ ranked and will probably put him back on there. Thank you for the info.

ok, sorry for the stupid question here. but is the alpha master report absolute and final? what if a kid just can't keep the weight on? for example, you have a kid who starts the season in November at 200 lbs and his body fat test says his lowest weight class he can go is 189. But come January, he finds himself weighing like 175. can the test be adjusted or re-taken? are waivers possible? Just curious. in particular, i was wondering about Danger's case, where i think he posted on here that he was weighing much lighter than the fat test would allow him to go, essentially forcing him to wrestle up. This seems like a potential problem with the fat test.
Any coaches got some insight on this?
Good question. It seems to me that most of the body fat tests that are used are not very accurate at all. I have seen schools get certified using one of those fat tests that you step on. Anyone who has used one of these knows that they are very inaccurate. By the way, Danger is definitely not weighing lighter then it says he should.

Oh my bad. I thought i seen him post something saying he was wrestling like 171 although he weighed like in the 150's because of his decent plan. I think it said he would weigh like 159.
The accuracy of these tests is a whole nother story. I read an interesting article on how to cheat er...."fool" the hydration part of the test. I won't post a link, but let's just say there are ways to fool that. The body fat tests should be done in a very standardized fashion. How hard or costly would it be for the KHSAA to have all the teams meet up for the body fat test at 1 location, and have them administered by 1 person....all the same way? You could do it by region.
yeah i've used one of the things you just squeeze and it said im 17.8% (more like 7.8% or mayb 8.8)
we use the caliper for ours... just weigh, pinch 3 areas and we're all good, theyre the most accurate without paying a ton of money.
Eaglewrestler12- He's not having a whole lot of trouble getting down to 140 but if he tried to go lower i dont know how safe it would be.
and i agree with you, Dinubus, he would destroy at 135 but at 140 he still has a good chance. I can see him winning it, but he definitely will have a very challenging road ahead.

This is a good idea. What about the new wrestlers and football players that come in after this initial fat test? I am happy with the steps that are being taken to keep kids safe, I just think like everything else it needs to be tweaked here and there to make it better.
Another thing is at 119 Rusch beat Bisenius at the Scrimmage earlier this season. I think it was by pinfall, but i'm not positive.

Yea, i thought about that too. Don't have an answer there other than allow the test to be done after football playoffs or something. Or just for those few exceptions where kids come out really late, they have to have the test done by a designated person. I don't know.

A scrimmage isn't a real match. Don't get me wrong, Rusch is looking great from what I have seen, but I believe Bisenius beat Rusch like 2 or three times last year and the year before. So, until they have their actual match, I have to give it to Bisenius.

Well in that case, Russell Nyitrai beat Bisenius last year at regionals. not that it matters. Russ will be staying at 125 and has beaten Taylor and Richardson.

Richardson and Bisenius Wrestled all 3 times NO and SO met. Connor, Bisenius by fall, Regional Duals Bisenius by fall again, and Regionals where it was for 5th and 6th place, Bisenius by Deciscion I think it was 8-2 or 8-4

It is my understanding that you are just out of luck if that happens. I've wondered about the case where a kid gets very sick and drops say 10 to 15 pounds over the course of a week. I assume some of that would come right back on when healthy, but maybe not all of it immediately.

And to prevent further... favoritism? The person issuing the test would be from a different region or better yet not affiliated with Kentucky High School Wrestling in any way.

I know, I know. I'll do all of the testing.
Hmm. Well you might be able to do that so your rankings are dead accurate.... Maybe bump some kids up to the next weight class so you can guarantee your top 8 predictions at each weight?

This is a good point. I worry about the inaccurate fat tests for the same reason. It says a brand new wrestler that he has a very low body fat % and only can lose so much. When that kids gets working hard and eating right for wrestling he may just end up losing more then it says and he is now screwed.

to be honest the weight loss plan was a good idea, but doesnt work. there are plenty of ways to get around it, and kids and coaches alike are doing them. its just an extra hassel that was not needed. all it does is cause kids to cut down to different weight classes the same way, but take longer to do it. i cut weight for my body fat test, so i was allowed to wrestle the weight i wanted to wrestle much earlier in the year. i weigh the same ive weighed all year, 132. that weight is not going to change. if i wanted to drop to 119 i would just cut from 132 every week, to 123, then 121, then 119. all im going to do is take 3 weeks to cut to 19, instead of 1, causing me to wrestle up two weeks. there needs to be a better way to stop kids from cutting too much weight. personnally i dont know what the solution would be, but the weight loss plans arent it. all the weight loss plans did for tates creeks program was cause us to cut out wednesday matches because it was too tough for kids to make weight twice a week. and if you were too heavy, you couldnt wrestle the correct weight the following saturday.

Theres never going to be a perfect way to do this... Think of governments, someones always going to do something wrong and theres always going to be that one person who doesn't agree. I read a while ago about some idea of having guys weigh in before they wrestled each match but that wouldn't work at all because kids would possibly miss weight and that would be chaos... Weighing in at 119 then 130 wouldn't be fun at all...
Weight classes are all wrong. Too many assumptions with dropping classes.

Like threequarter said, it's not perfect. But it's a step in the right direction. Something had to be done from the old school days. When I coached m.s. wrestling a few years back, I had parents so worried that I was going to make their kids starve and lose 5 lbs they didn't want to let their kids go out for wrestling. That was based on the perception of wrestling from back in their high school days. The weight management program has made that better even if it's not perfect.
My point of asking about this i guess is I think kids have different metabolisms and that a kid takes the test at the beginning of the season and gets pigeon holed into a spot. But by the end of the season, he's way down close to the weight class below where the fat test said he could be at without trying. I've seen a couple of cases of this happening, 1 with a kid that made the finals last year. I would think in cases like that, there could be a re-assessment or something. Doesn't sound like there is.
3/4, I will make the correction. I thought it was Rusch rather than Richardson.
Eagle, is that the only time Richardson and Nyitrai and Bisneius wrestled? Who won the most matches?
Oh I was just messin' cuz Nyitrai is stayin at 125 anyway, but I believe Nyitrai and Bisenius have split matches with Nyitrai winning the most recent, and Nyitrai has beaten Richardson everytime they've wrestled the most recent by a tech
Nyitrai should be seeded 1st at 125, he has beaten Richardson by fall at the Dragon Invitational (1st period i think) and teched at regionals.

You are not restricted by your body fat testing technically. You can get a doctor's note saying you are healthy to wrestle at whatever your weight is, even if it is below the minimum weight allowed by alpha testing. So if you think you are healthy enough to go below the weight it says, get a doctor's note. Simple as that.

If your body fat is below 7% you are required to get a physician clearance. However, you are prohibited from dropping to any weight class below your alpha weight at the time of testing. Even if a doctor says you are healthy enough to drop further, you cannot.
question. Is it better to wrestle at your natural weight or cut weight to get to a lower weight class? I would think a kid at his natural weight would have a strength and energy advantage over a kid that has to drop 8 pounds every week. New to wrestling so just curious about this.

it depends on your body, and who is at what weight. if you are used to cutting the weight, then it doesnt affect you as much as it would affect someone new to cutting. but there is also no reason to cut down to a lower weight, if that weight has more depth than the one you are currently at. many wrestlers have a lot of success not cutting weight, and many have a lot of success when they cut weight, it just all depends.

My opinion is that it's better to be fairly lean in this sport. But dropping 8 lbs each week will take it's toll and usually at the worst possible time - end of season/state. There is a great book out there that talks all about this stuff called The grapplers guide to sports nutrition.
In that book, the author says that being at 7% body fat is not necessarily a kid's idea weight for peak performance. (something like that). The book is pretty technical really about what to eat and all that stuff but it's really informative.
ive been cutting 7 punds every week for three years...guess thats why i have gotten sick at regionals and state the last three years...

maybe you should try wrestling your natural weight this year? really, its usually beneficial for kids to do this.

i tried wrestling 130 my sophmore year, and wasnt nearly strong enough, thats when i decided to make the jump to 25. i feel i could be strong enough this year, but my team needs me at 125. besides ive already made the commitment to wrestling 125, ill finish there. i seem to be doing better this year than previously.

well if it wasn't your senior year, then i would tell you to hit the weights, and hard. but i'll say it anyways so that younger kids reading this can understand. HIT THE WEIGHTS, AND HARD! lol

i hit the weights for a year straight, and yeah it made a difference, but to be honest. i saw the biggest difference when i started doing pullups, dips, and pushups. you would be amazed at how much it helps you, especially how much more it helps you than bench, squats, and curls.
You both have been right. Cutting a weight class (8 lbs) is not an issue. However, cutting 8 lbs each week is bad. You need to eat right and lose the 8 lbs by eating salads and drinking plenty of water. Then you can pick up a few more carbs prior to wrestling after your weight is down. This will give you the energy to compete in practice and at meets.

when i first joined the navy, i was lifting weights 4 days a week, and they told me to just to a bunch of pushups, as many as i could do. and i really think that doin the pushups has been more beneficiary than the weights...
the real quandry is what about the kid that needs to put on weight for soccer football golf and baseball does he then try to take it off for wrestling. he is fighting against himself all year long

thats when you have to make a decision which sport your going to dedicate yourself to, and stick with that one sport.

you dont necasarily have to stick to one sport, but i would choose whats more imortant, football, or wrestling. if its wrestling, stay lean, if its football, pack on the pounds with protein.
oh btw, i dont know about anyone else, but ive never heard of anyone wanting to gain weight for golf...

golfers actually lift weights... tiger woods probably lifts weights more than most people in sports, but then again thats why hes the best golfer ever.
but i played football my freshman year as well as wrestled and baseball, and its really hard. in order to be good at wrestling, you have to go to camps and what not all over the summer and its kind of impossible to do this on top of baseball and football conditioning and weight lifting. i just feel like you have to commit to one sport, if your a wrestler that is. its easy to place basketball, and football, and baseball.
well thats why i said you have to choose which one you prefer. you can do all of them, but to excell you have to give more time to one or the other. so if its wrestling, give more time to that, and go to camps, and do baseball stuff, only in the baseball season. besides i highly doubt wrestling would get you out of shape for any sport. vice versa if your sport is baseball. make wrestling the thing that you do only during its season, and the other sports are the ones you spend your spare time going to camp for. i do understand what you are saying however, but it is manageable if doing more than one sport is your thing.
i aplaud anyone that wants to do more than one sport. maybe im biased because wrestling is the hardest sport out there, and so it makes me not want to do anything else ever cause im always so drained, but idk. i need the 8 months off we get to prepare for next season :-D

i just thought of one exception to this, Jordan Whiting. But the exceptions to these rules usually are at HWT, and they usually excel at football.

yeah, you are very right. i dont think jordan whiting has a problem watching his weight, when its aloud to be 285...
i was looking at the national rankings a couple days ago, and it shows what college they've committed to, and like 5 of the top 10 hwts committed to a school for football. its crazy. i guess the aspect of maybe going pro one day is just to much to handle. the truth is maybe 2 of these kids will go pro...

I've heard that John Fahey is an excellent golfer.
ive heard that too.
Golf is not a sport, it's a recreation. My 78 year old Grandmother plays golf three times a week but can't climb a flight of stairs. How can golf be called a sport when most of the participants, even at the pro level, lack the physical ability to get through 10 minutes of a wrestling practice.
I hate golf, maybe the fact that my Daughter's boyfriend is a golfer has something to do with it.

i absolutely can not stand people on this forum bashing other peoples sports. this is what kids in high schools are constantly going through. now im not going to get started on some soap box because i tend to do that and i just dont want to this time. just go out on a par 3 and play that same hole a million times, and tell me how many times you can get a par on it, or even a 4 for that matter.

Yeah, but that's like asking a kid to solve a rubik's cube or some complex math puzzle. Those are skills, not necessarily sports. We can argue all day about the walking aspect and this or that. And golf might meet the technical definition of a sport, but it is much closer to croquette and cornhole than wrestling, football, etc. I'm not taking anything away from the abilities of guys like Tiger Woods; he probably is a great athlete, but that doesn't make golf a great sport. And the amount of time he spends working out has nothing to do with the sport. I can work out like a mad man 24/7 and it really helps me be more efficient at taking out the garbage every week, but it is still just taking out the garbage.
Those of you that were talking about having to choose a sport because in wrestling you diet to become lean and in football or soccer you want to gain weight.
1. I have only heard of football coaches asking their athletes to gain weight
2. You are better off being lean than fat in any sort of running game.
3. If you hold your weight back for up to 5 months out of the year, you body will explode after you quit holding it back. The weight will not stay off, and typically if you want to bulk up with muscle, the time to do it is right after dieting!
Any football coach that argues this against wrestling is either an idiot, or has never had any experience with or around wrestling.

so how is golf not a sport but everyone is stoked about andy lenz dominating the ping pong board?

You may be right, if you just start a sport while in high school, and wish to be real good at it, then maybe you need to focus just on that sport. However, if you have played three sports since middle/elementary school, your body will be better off and you will have much more talent. Also, if you focus year around on a single sport, your body will start wearing down and you will have joint issues as well as a higher probability to break bones. Playing three sports allows your body to correctly heal and grow stronger as well as allows you to grow in areas such as spurt control, endurance handling, etc...

There you have it... thanks for putting those Masters Degrees to use Dinubus!
