Random Draw

Just a simple question.. are you for it or against it..  Shouldnt you at least try to keep the top guys as far away from each other as you can, so that it makes for a great finals not a great semi-finals.  Ive seen a few less than great wrestlers make it to the finals in my day because of an easy part of the bracket and a real tough second part.  Just a simple question guys.

im against it. i think they should do it like they do the ncaa basketball bracketts. it would make for a much better tourny

Thats what I was thinking as well

by state the top 4 in each weight class should pretty much be known so i think seed atleast the top 4 and work from there.

I think the 8 region champs make it very simple and straightforward as to where the cutoff is.

This would be the best, seeding criteria will have to be set up though. Then have a committee set the top 8 seeds. Coaches send in all the information on their wrestlers for seeding criteria and the committee sets the top 8. Coaches will have to keep track of results for all their wrestlers, there are computer programs out there. The KHSAA could even mandate one program for the whole state and put it online, like the  NWCA optimal performance calculator. I even think there is a place on the site to keep track of records :-o.

I actually like the random draw. Yes, you will not ALWAYS have the best finals match, however the cream will rise to the top and everyone has the same fair chance to get a good or bad draw.

Seeding criteria will always leave it up to some type of judgment call. If it is not the coaches judgment on scheduling or avoiding certain wrestlers to have better records, etc, then it is an advisory board that has never even seen the boys wrestle.

I agree mathound.  The random draw always allows for the underdog to make a run for the title.

Many times in the long history of wrestling the best wrestler does not win the title.  Sometimes the champion comes from a wrestler who had a somewhat easier way to the finals.  But he still defeated the best from the other half.

The random draw allows for a little drama at the state tourney.  If you seed the wrestlers we all know that the top seed gets the easier draw (or at least it is viewed that way).

Keep the random draw, keep the suspense.  As you said the cream almost always rises to the top.  If you really want to seed the tourney then have another tourney after regions then you will only have 4 champions. But remember we already tried the (District, Region, Semi state, State) model and it was a failure.  This gave you two Semi-state champions who were on the opposite side of the bracket and the 2nd place wrestlers opposite each other and the one who won their region.

Yes, I will go along with the cream rising to the top theory.  But there is also another theory that the team championship is determined in wrestlebacks.  If you have 14 state finals matches taking place in the quarters or semis then that can play havoc with the consolation brackets.  In a tight race it could really mess some things up.

I can see the team scoring argument. It would be hard for me to determine how many points a match is worth to determine the tournament champions. However, it's still random, so if it were close - all teams still had the same odds of getting the better draws.

Yes, everyone has the same odds of getting the bad draw, but why leave it up to luck?  Everyone always brings up the St X team that won without a champion.  Great story.  Was it luck?  I didn't see it so I don't know if they benefited from a lot of nice draws or if they had to really work for that title.  I hate to use basketball as a reference, but it makes sense.  What is the most popular tournament in the country.  The NCAA basketball tournament gets the attention of almost every person with a heartbeat.  And they go to all of the trouble to bracket it fairly.

Hey Ranger, they bracket the tournament because there is some kind of consensus on who the best teams in the country are. They have several different rankings to go by and a committe brought in to seed unbiasely. Now wrestling in kentucky, only has one outstanding ranker and we all know who that is, and another subsequent ranking. Now if there was a total commitment by the coaches throughout the state to rank all the wrestlers then I could see a legitimate way to rank these kids at the tourney. Not saying that it would be right but it could pose better championship matches. The big overwhelming point is that kids are kids and upsets will happen whether you seed them or not. You know as well as I do anything can happen at any given match and thats what makes this so fun. :-D

Coomes?  J/K

The best way would possibly be to take the 8 region champions then seed them on a points system. Something similar to the way Walsh does the Ironman. That way a wrestler gets credit for wrestling better competition. Takes subjective opinion away.
