ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Michaela Hutchinson became the first girl in the nation to win a state high school wrestling title while competing against boys.

Hutchison won the final of the 103-pound weight class during Alaska's big school wrestling championships. The Skyview High sophomore entered the state tournament ranked No. 1 in her weight class.

Amid chants of ``C'mon Michaela'' and ``Girl Power,'' Hutchison earned a 1-0 victory Saturday over Colony High School's Aaron Boss.

She scored an escape with 16 seconds left to beat Boss for the second time in as many weeks. Family and friends mobbed Hutchison as she walked away from the mat with a bloody nose, while the crowd rose in a standing ovation.

``They were helping me,'' Hutchison told the Anchorage Daily News.

She finished the season with a 45-4 record that included 33 pins, one shy of the state single-season record. Hutchison is the third in her family of 10 children to win a state title, joining brothers Zeb and Eli.

very impressive, not only impressive for a girl but impressive for ANYONE

true that true that! CONGRADULATIONS!

but does anyone know the competition level in alaska, cuz i mean if its very competitive then thats extremely impressive, when i say competitive i mean like more so then kentucky not the level of ohio of course but pretty competitive, but lets think about if its not that competitive that would probably mean most of the people she went against were probably middle schoolers, and her being a sophmore kinda gives her a major edge, still impressive but that kinda takes away from it

yea good point. but i guess it's just like everywhere else, you go onto the mat with ur best people in each weight & hope for the best! :)

RHCP - takes away from it? Why don't you walk out after the state finals and let the winners know that they only won a KY state championship; it's not like they won in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Or better yet, those guys that didn't even walk away with a medal. Or let your friend (I say that because I think you're from Ryle) Kyle Ruschell know that his state titles don't really count because they were in KY.

Come on. Give the girl her credit.

I have given her credit, i give it where credit is due, but dont you think its time to start giving girls more credit in the sport? my point was not of being sexest in any manner, it was saying that girls are becoming alot more competitive in the sport, i think now that she has won it that more girls might come out for the sport, maybe make it a bigger thing? you never know? before you accuse me of not giving credit, when i have obviously given her credit cuz its still an accomplishment, i mean she could very well be all over the news as soon as they get around to a wrestling thing like on 20/20 or something on that level...

i know this is a big thing since its the first time it has happened, but once this thing goes over and its moved on i think more females could very well possibly do the same thing, i think this will very well grow the sport of wrestling in every state not just KY, and what i was saying is that the level in Ohio and Penn for that matter is as you know much more challenging and only because they have more wrestling programs over there (obvious but still will say it) i was only using KY as a example as a in my eyes average state and maybe comparable to alaska? cuz i havnt wrestled there and i knwo no one that has, so i wouldnt know personally, but maybe one day a girl will wrestle and win state in Ohio, you can never tell what they will produce next?

but i see your point, i understand what you are saying exactly, you made your point, and i think i made a valid point as well

btw it doesnt matter what school i wrestled for, thats irrelavent to the subject

My point was why even go there? Why even propose the idea that maybe she only won because Alaska may be below average in wrestling talent. That goes against the idea of promoting girls in the sport by saying it could happen in a weak state but don't waste the time in a "real" state.

Here's the point, the chick won state & she's the only one to do it. she could be good or bad but what matters is that she won! 8)
