PREP WRESTLING: LaRue County earns 7-of-14 top seeds in region tourney
By NATHANIEL BRYAN
RADCLIFF — The LaRue County High School wrestling team could have a “us against them” mentality heading into Saturday’s 2nd Region Tournament and it would be easy to where the second-ranked Hawks are coming from.
LaRue County, which has won the event seven consecutive times, received seven No. 1 seeds in the 14-weight class tournament at John Hardin.
“I’d say it probably seems that way. It’s everyone against us,” said longtime LaRue County coach Gary Canter, who led his team to its third state duals championship less than a month ago in Lexington. “That’s good for competition, but it probably pits a crowd against you as well when you’ve had the success that we’ve had.”
LaRue County earned five No. 2 seeds, one third seed and one fourth seed, meaning all of its grapplers are seeded.
“There were a couple (of weight classes) that we couldn’t fight for, but I’m pretty pleased,” Canter said. “Realistically, we can win a couple of those that we’re not seeded No. 1.”
North Hardin and Anderson County each have nine grapplers seeded, while Central Hardin and John Hardin both have eight. Fort Knox has six seeded wrestlers and Danville and Nelson County n a first-year program coached by former LaRue County All-American Jason Detre n each have one seeded grappler.
LaRue County’s top seeds came from Darwin Perez (119 pounds), Ozzy Parker (130), Matt Miller (135), Evan Smith (140), Pat Banks (145), Bryant Barnhill (160) and Joe Embree (215). Central Hardin’s Mason Bradbury (112), Joe Collin (152) and Terry Turner (189) also earned No. 1 seeds, as did North Hardin’s Mark Jones (171) and Matt Ballinger (275), John Hardin’s Cassidy Veach (125) and Fort Knox’s Aurthur Ohmes (103).
Weigh-ins will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with competition slated to start 90 minutes later. The finals are tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Feb. 16-18 at the Frankfort Convention Center.
