Open Mats, Jefferson & Oldham Co.

Topic ID: 5323 | 15 Posts

It seems silly to me that across Jefferson and Oldham Counties we have 6 different open mats happenning on the same days.  What we need is some open mats allowing for diverse competition from the season.  I assume all of the open mats works off from the premise that the kids have a USAW card for insurance purposes.

My proposition:

1.  4 - 5 locations each pick one day (less work for the coaches) to run the practice, but the day has to be different from all other locations.

2.  At each location, the wrestlers will have to sign in with their USAW card number and thier name on the first practice at each location.  Then that location's coach can put their name and card number into a spreadsheet to print out each practice afterward in which the wrestler just checkmarks in.

3.  Have a slightly longer shift allowing for multiple ages / weights.  My suggestion would be:  4:00 - 6:00 = 100 lbs and up, 6:00 - 8:00 = less than 100 lbs. (not that we would check weight as they walk in the door, this would just be a guideline so noone gets hurt)

So far I have noticed Open Mats in the following locations:  PRP, Fern Creek, Iroquois, North Oldham.  So, why not have them on the following days:

Mondays:  North Oldham

Tuesdays:  Iroquois

Wednesdays:  Fern Creek

Thursdays:  PRP

Fridays:  Volunteers?

Coaches of these open Mats, please post back so I can get a yeh or a neh on this, possibly change some things around and get this rolling.  I truly believe we can get a much bigger group at each of our locations this way which will produce better wrestlers for all of us.

Also, I have a schedule of events close to Louisville area that I plan on coaching my boys at.  There are other tournaments around as well, so don't be shy in lookin here (kywrestling) or on www.themat.com for more tournament locations.

Same here we only had one other person show from outside the team so we've been traveling mon & thurs at iroquois and wends at our place and if no one shows we walk to Fern Creek

Jtown

Mondays:  North Oldham

Tuesdays:  Iroquois

Wednesdays:  Fern Creek

Thursdays:  PRP

Fridays:  J-Town

Does this work for everyone else, It seems North Oldham and J-Town are in agreement, I would like to hear from the Iroquois, Fern Creek, and PRP coaches.

North Oldham & J-Town, are you all willing to start holding it at the day prescribed above from 4-6 for 100+ lbs and 6-8 for those under 100 lbs?  If so, the rest of us can all start coming to your places at that time following this next week spring break.  Hopefully by then, we have the other three teams as well.

4-8 basically?  I am good till about 530.  I'd need an assistant to step up if possible.

Dinubus, I'm curious why you chose Evansville, IN instead of Franklin, IN on April 18? Is the Franklin tournament not folkstyle? Maybe I didn't look at it right.

Is the iroquois open matt anygood, like is there any 103s, or 112s there?

JTown Will go tuesday from 5-7 from here on out only and travel mon thurs to Iroquois and NOldham or fern creek on wensdays

If you can stay till 6:00, I could cover for you till 8:00 on Monday nights.

Let me know.

No real reason, both are good.  I typically go more for freestyle with my boys right now, but with Meter Dei, I was hoping for good competition at Evansville as well.

Frankly, this is not fitting the reason for this whole concept.  The 4-8 plan will allow for two practice sessions of two very diverse weight groupings.  Since I am trying to coordinate this because I have two little guys (a 40 and a 45 lb wrestler), the 5-7 plan will definitely not work for me.  If I cannot get this coordinated, I will just stick with working out with my boys at home on the carpet and going up to Fern Creek who took them in for elementary school wrestling.  This takes much less time for me, and they are doing well so far, I was just hoping to get something better started.  Basically I will give up on this idea if I don

Thank you for the post about the upcoming tournaments.  Are the tournaments open for youth wrestling, or are they just for the high school kids?  Also, I would like to know a schedule for certain of the open mats around the area.  I would bring wrstlers.

The tournaments I posted allow for all age groups.  All of them except the Kentucky tournaments actually offer a Pee-Wee age group for 5-6 year old wrestlers.  Kentucky, sadly, only offers down to a Bantam age group (7-8), but they allow younger kids to wrestle in that age group.

I'm trying to get a scheudle together to take some wrestlers to open mats.  Does anyone have open mats on Monday and Friday lasting until 7 or 8 o'clock?  Also, does anyone have the contact information for the Fern Creek and Bryan Station folk style tournaments coming up?
