SEC Football

"yea i know, but it sucks to see the potential just leaving the state. yea and another thing, why didn't he go SEC?? soo much better at football. i don't care what ANYBODY (notice the anybody) says, the SEC is the best football conference in the nation short of the AFC and NFC. i mean every game Kentucky plays is like playing the Detroit Lions, every game except maybe Miss State, Vandy(most years, it will be like playing the Patriots next year) and SOME years Louisville, but thats not conference. thats why we have horrible records (sometimes) and we get awful bowl games. please i know this is Kentucky WRESTLING, but i really want to argue about this. haha"

I don't get it?

But I would say that every game that Kentucky plays in football is more like playing the Cleveland Browns as opposed to the Detroit Lions. Im not too sure that playing Vanderbilt is going to be like playing the Patriots next year either. But with one of the best recruiting classes we have had in years, including two top quarterbacks with contrasting styles, we should be good. In a year or two Kentucky will be running a two quarterback set, much like LSU did in their championship 07-08 season. Ryan Mossakowski being the strong arm, with Morgan Newton being the mobile type. I think that a mobile quarterback is just what Kentucky needs. Something that we have never had. I mean, go back and look at all the recent quarterbacks we have had; Couch, Lorenzen, and Woodson. Whats the common factor here? They are all good arms, but not mobile. In todays game you must have both, and Kentucky has that now. I know that Morgan Newton has been working alot with Peyton Manning, since he lives in Carmel Indiana, trying to improve his arm and not to become a one dimensional Pat White quarterback, because that just wont work in the SEC.

I agree with the part about the SEC being the best conference in America short of the AFC or NFC. Even the scrubs in the conference did good (08-09 season). The SEC had 8 teams playing in Bowl Games, compiling a 6-2 bowl record. Ole Miss beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl by 13 points, a Texas Tech team that alot of people felt should have been in the National Championship Game (they also beat Florida earlier in the year). Vanderbilt beat Boston College by 2 points for their first bowl game victory since 1955. LSU demolished Georgia Tech 38-3, one year removed from a National Championship. Unranked South Carolina lost to then ranked #21 Iowa. Georgia doubled up on Big 10 runner up Michigan State, winning 24-12. The best team in the world, UK beat an "upcoming giant killer" East Carolina University team that beat #17 Virginia Tech in the opening week, then #8 West Virginia the following week. Alabama spent most of the season undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation before losing in the SEC championship game to Florida and then in the BCS Sugar Bowl to undefeated Utah. And to wrap it all up Florida wins the National Championship game.

I will agree that the SEC is the best conference.  I will argue that I would still go to Ohio State way before any team in the SEC.  Florida is really the only team better than them, and tradition wise no one in the SEC is better.  Being at Ohio State you will probably be in a big bowl game every year.  This really lets you show off your talents on a big stage and that helps you get to that next level.  The SEC teams all beat up on each other and like Ky, you might be playing in the toilet bowl year after year.  I would say that the only better team then Ohio in the last 10-15 years would be USC.  As far as staying in state or going to Ohio Sate, thats a no brainer.

Lol. My college Algebra teacher is from Columbus Ohio and I have this same argument with her every single day. I agree that Ohio State does have the tradition that none of the teams in the SEC have, but the thing that I don't like about them is that it seems like they get break after break every year due to their tradition. Much like Oklahoma who is now on a five year BCS bowl game losing streak, I mean come on, there comes a time when they have to stop getting in these games. How do you put a team on a four year BCS bowl game losing streak in the National Championship game? But back  to the point. Two years in a row they were in the national championship game (they obviously deserved it going in undefeated against Florida, but it was a miracle/catastrophic upset loss by West Virginia that got them in the game in the 07-08 season) and in both of those two years they lost to an SEC team. They play in a recently dwindled Big 10 conference, with the only two good teams being Ohio State and Penn State, Michigan State on the fence and with Michigan having a down year and probably a few more to come. Ohio State's last bowl win was the 05 Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame and a young Brady Quinn. I think he threw 3 interceptions that game? Last season - Ohio State played a horribly weak regular season schedule playing only 4 ranked teams all year. They got devastated by #1 USC (35-3), squeaked by #18 Wisconsin (20-17), handled #20 Michigan State (45-7), and lost to #3 Penn State (13-6). It seems like year after year they take the Duke/Coach K approach and drill a bunch of cupcakes to get a good record and ranking, and don't do anything come postseason.

The SEC teams just beat each other out of the National Championship race. If I had the choice between Ohio State, Florida, or USC, im taking Florida. Probably just because I like their spread offense  :-D

The SEC has sent 8 to 9 teams out of the twelve, combining both east/west, to a bowl game for the past couple of years. The last 3 years an SEC team has won it. Kentucky isn't even a football school and they've won their last 2 bowl games. I think the SEC has earned their spot at the to division.

Kentucky has won their last 3 bowl games. Gaylor Hotels Music City Bowl 07, 08; Autozone Liberty Bowl 09.

Did you watch that last bowl game with them and East Carolina? Man that was a good game esp. towards the end.

yea next year we should be good, even though i went to the blue white game and they looked a lil shady, but i mean who is to judge its spring. but i will say hartline has improved greatly.

That was a great game. Haha, I was at Texas Roadhouse acting a fool.

Spring games often don't show the true talent of teams. I will agree that Hartline has improved greatly, and even with the acquisition of two top 10 quarterbacks, the starting position is still his to lose.

why not alternate. they're going to do it with two QBs regardless, why not throw all three in there. i bet come sep when we open in cinci, then when we come home to play louisville, we see alot of all three of our QBS, Alfonso Smith, and Aaron Boyd. and a last note how about M. Pryor  to the patriots? that is great.

I just don't see the point in using all three of them, unless Mossakowski can't adapt to SEC football, Mossakowski does everything better than Hartline. Hartline has one season under his belt though, and he showed his experience in the Liberty Bowl against ECU. This being the reason I say that the starting job is his to lose.

Another name that we haven't mentioned at all; Ryan Cobb. He showed me alot when he was taking snaps behind center. When he threw the late interception against Georgia, which ultimately lost the game, he was heartbroken. And I like that in a QB how many times did Hartline throw a pick and just walk off the field like it doesn't even matter, or he doesn't care? Ryan Cobb is a great athlete, and with the acquisition of the 2 new QBs and with Hartline maturing, Cobb will likely be our #1 or #2 receiver.

The future is very bright for Kentucky football, and I can't wait until September, and a couple of years to see how everything pans out.

Congratulations to Myron Pryor! Another great defensive lineman, Corey Peters. Was he a Junior or a Senior this year? Just reminding everyone, great HWT wrestler from Central High School. 5th in the state in 06.

Ohio State is 0-9 vs SEC teams in bowl games.

Your right. Haha, theres a kid at my high school that plays kind of the same role as him named Ryan Cobb. A little bit of QB, a little bit of WR.

Ohio State is 0-9 vs SEC teams in bowl games.

My point exactly.

Yea, its just different types of football. i mean it seems like in the Big 10, there are so many big plays, 50 yard receptions, its in the defence (i think) that makes SEC better . now keep in mind I'm a wrestler, no expertice  here except peewee, middle school, and Freshman year football, but i have been chanting C-A-T-S cats cats cats since i was about 5. Yea I can't wait till September, Miami is going to get hammered, Louisville will be tough but we can do it for what the 3rd or 4th time in a row? then those following weeks will tell us just how good our cats are, Florida, Alabama at home, then we have to put up with ole Steve in South Carolina at his house, then Auburn at auburn. we have a tough schedule thats what I'm trying to say.

I think the SEC should disband until they have wrestling.

Kentucky has, year in and year out, one of the hardest schedules in the nation. But we should be able to manage a winning record this year, beating all the teams we should and knocking off some of the teams we probably shouldn't.

Ohh yea, i know its crazy sounding and people are prolly gonna say something but i see us sending the Crimson Tide down! its gonna be at home, its gonna be crunk, i just think were going to do it.

Well it's very possible look what KY did to LSU two years back.

We were 3 points off of beating them in Tuscaloosa when they were ranked #1 in the nation. So imagine what we can do at home.

true that. this fall is gonna be great. but i am really surprised no Louisville fans have gotten on here and trashed talked.

Yeah. Really. Me living in Louisville, almost every single one of my friends are Louisville friends. And they always talk trash about UK. Im a UK fan and I don't trash UofL, why do they have to? Lol its all good though.

i wish we could just chill. i mean we are both good ball clubs, representing kentucky, and we both do a good job at doing it. idk, i just hate getting into it with cards

They're always like, "lets talk basketball" when I mention football, then im like ok lets talk basketball, no school in the world has more wins than UK and only one school has more championships. Then they'll be like what have you all done lately? And i'll say what have you all done? They're quick to reply with a final four in 05. They live in the past. They're so ecstatic about they're orange bowl victory like 3 years ago.

Definitely. I cant wait to see how the next 4 years play out for UK basketball. Coach Cal should be great.

Then I guess there was one more class that was better recruited than they were.  :-P Kentucky has always had tradition of picking up some of the best college basketball players, especially during the Petino era. Smith also had some very good recruits. I think Coach Cal will carry on that tradition and not only take control of the SEC again but the nation as well.

Please don't try to have this discussion with me. They made it to the championship game, and Chris Webber blew it hardcore. Thats the difference between UK basketball and Michigan basketball. At UK our players are taught poise, and game control.

BTW; Nobody minds that this subject has switched from football to basketball do they? This subject being in General Discussion I assume not, but just to make sure.

I am a UK fan but can you seriously be taught the poise of if you dont do well one game or another that you may become public enemy #1.. Seriously i may dislike michael porter as the other guy but did he deserved to get booed off the court in like the last home game because he had a bad season... i think that only time will tell and Kentucky needs these "off" yrs to get back on top.

Michael Porter deserved much worse than to get booed off the court. I hope he gets hit by an airplane or something. Seriously, he can't shoot, he can't dribble, he can't drive, he can't manage the game, he has no basketball intelligence. He is awful. Im soooo glad that he isn't coming back next year. That helps UK with the scholarship situation. UK will be back on top very soon. I can almost guarantee it. Recruits just flock to Calipari.

I bought a new T-Shirt today in the mall; it says "Envy our Past, Fear our Future, The John Calipari Era Is Here!" in UK Blue. Pretty bad.

Well just saying i bet he has more talent and athleticism than you could ever wish for, he declined a scholarship to play QB at USC. (enough said) but he turned it down to suck it up at UK... so maybe he should try pullin a Greg Paulus..

and after a year they all flock to the NBA and how much poise and game managment can they learn in one year especially when they are all stars in high school and dont have to share the ball with anyone else and now they have to lose the ego and get in a team philosphy

Get the facts straight. He turned down a scolarship to play DB at USC, not QB. And just because you get a scholarship doesn't mean that you will even play. He could have rode the bench his whole career at USC. So he preferred to go play ball.

Something will be done very soon about the NBA. With High School juniors dropping out of school to go play in Europe, there will be something done very soon.

But at UK, the players there are usually there to do one thing, win championships. And they usually don't go pro until they do that, or graduate. We have quite a few good big men, and they usually have to stay 3 or 4 years, to work on their footwork, post moves, etc.

What's going to be done about the NBA?  They already have an age limit & a rule that you can't play in the nba until after your high school class graduates.  What more do you want?  If the NBA becomes more strict on this it will just help out the European teams.  If a kid just wants to play basketball for a living and doesn't want to fool with college let it be.

My bad i heard wrong from a game a while back but i looked it up and i couldnt even find his football recruiting so i guess basketball is the 2nd sport he had to quit b/c his talent.... and "ball" can be interpreted many different ways... but calipari will bring good recruits but managing them to stay i doubt b/c "money talks" and good players want to leave to get the millions from the NBA

Where does it say that we have the number one recruiting class in the nation? I have heard this by a ton of people, but according to ESPN and Rivals, North Carolina has the #1 recruiting class.

The NBA is sick of having stupid people be the ones that the whole world sees. The Kobe Bryant's, Dwight Howard's, and Amare Stoudemire's. Are they great players? Yes. Would playing in College have benefited them? Greatly. It would make their game better, and make USA smarter.

The NBA should make it a rule that players must have two years in college before they are eligible for the NBA draft. With the 1 year rule now, kids go for the basketball season, and drop out after the season. Not very attractive. And I also think that they should request that the Europe League doesn't take any high school kids. Jeremy Tyler, a high school junior commited to UofL, has decided to not attend UofL, drop out of high school after his junior year, and go play in the European League. That is insanely ridiculous.

There aint no cure for stupid, these guys are just born that way.  1, 2, or 6 years of college won't fix that for some.  The NBA used to have a rule that you had to go to college for 4 years.  This rule has been fought over in the courts a couple of times.  Besides that, the Europe league loves to get their hands on top recruits before they go to college.  If the nba becomes more strict on this you will see more guys who are nba ready H.S. seniors like Greg Oden go straight to Europe.

Its funny you should bring up Greg Oden, because I think that he still is not NBA ready. This should be his Junior year in College. How much has he produced in the NBA? With a 7 foot 280 pound body, you should be the MVP. But he is too soft, too injury prone. I can't stand Greg Oden.

Ok, your right I see it. But I usually go by ESPNU standards and they are saying UNC.

Greg Oden will be a star in the NBA very soon, another year or 2 in college wasn't going to benefit him as much as getting nba experience.  Another couple of years of dominating college competition would have been like JJ Jude wrestling a few more years of middle school competition.  He's where he needs to be in my opinion.

No. He can't stay healthy, only time will tell though. He is so soft, and it makes me mad. He will go down as one of the biggest busts ever in my opinion. Plus I hate Ohio State.

Finally something you and I can agree on.  I hate Ohio State as well.  But I do think Oden will be a force.  He sat out 1 year with an injury so he was a little rusty.  He didn't do all that bad either, something like 8 pts a game and 8 rebounds I think.  No he's not Kobe or Shaq yet, but he'll be good.

8.9 ppg and 7.0 rpg in 61 career games, 39 career starts. Averaging 21.9 Minutes per game, to me 7 feet tall, 285 pounds, that is a bust for a #1 overall draft pick. I can't stand Greg Oden.

Really? Im glad you know where I have lived my whole life. I guess Sheperd's Square isn't the hood? Ok. Enough said. I don't know where some Woodford Co. kid gets off telling me where im from.

yea shepards square isn't "the hood" nowhere in ky is the hood, if thats the hood than Simmons St is east chicago. and why is that something to be preoud of ??? yea im from the hood i rob and kill in drivebys. i pimp the hoes and keep the drugs on the low. if your from the hood than im OG Mack(creator of the Eastcoast bloods) himselfcall me my name not wofo kid.

Let me start this by saying, I am in no way upset or trying to claim things that I am not a part of right now. But:

I get mad when people disagree with me about my background. I can almost guarantee that you have never been to Sheperd's Square. Its not something to be proud of. Why would I be proud of seeing my father abuse my mother, and blow all of our family's money on drugs, therefore our only option of living being a housing project. In my post where I said "Im from the hood" it merely to try to help people understand where I got some of my terminology from.

So I apologize for getting upset before, and it doesn't even matter to me now. My past is irrelevant, nobody really cares about it. Everyone has some kind of bad upbringing now a days it seems like.

To get somewhat back on topic; while checking out ESPNU today, I noticed that John Wall (#1 PG in the Nation) has changed his list of schools from #1.Duke #2.Baylor #3.UK to #1.UK #2.Miami.

With the the possible acquisition of the #1 PG in the nation we would definitely be even more of a force to deal with next year.

ohh well im sorry for assuming, but like i said theres like 100 sheaperd's square. theres two in louisville though? i could of sworn that it was the same place, cuz this place would fit the profile of "hood" from the perspective of a kentucky boy. haha

Its all good. I checked out the pre-season top 25 in football earlier today. Ole Miss is ranked #7 in the nation. WOW. Is all I can say, its well deserved, but I don't think that they will live up to the spot.

JOHN WALL IS A WILDCAT.

JOHN WALL IS A WILDCAT.

I just found that out on scout.com!!

this has to be one of the best recruiting classes kentucky has ever had.

its a pretty bold statment and a little early but kentucky could be in the running for a national title next year.

yea to hell with duke and miami,  he's a cat now, its over.

It's not even 12 hours since the original John Wall-to-Kentucky story broke, and already we have a new consensus favorite to win the 2009-10 national title: the Kentucky Wildcats.

Wall is that good. He tips the scales that much. But, in the words of the dude on "Reading Rainbow," you don't have to take my word for it. Pretty much everyone seems to agree, starting with Fox Sports' Jeff Goodman, who did a quick re-boot of his early preseason Top 25 rankings so as to include Kentucky at the top:

Just think about this: Two fringe McDonald's All-Americans -- Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe -- will be role players who probably won't see the floor with the game on the line. Wall and Meeks in the backcourt with a big man trio of Patterson and heralded freshmen bigs DeMarcus Cousins and Orton make this group the deepest and most talented in the nation.

Dan Shanoff, noted Florida fan, is also jumping on the bandwagon:

Why? Because UK reportedly just got super-prospect John Wall, who instantly becomes the best player in college basketball. Wall isn't just a lock as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2010 NBA Draft -- he could have been in the mix for the No. 1 pick THIS year. But it's not just Wall. It's the return of Patrick Patterson, the best post player in the country. It's the collection of a recruiting class that was arguably No. 1 in the country BEFORE Wall joined.

It goes on. Rush the Court says "with all due respect ... that looks like the No. 1 lineup to us."

Chris Littman at The Sporting Blog headlines: "UK Adds John Wall; NCAA Cancels Season." FanHouse says "expectations go up to 11." And I agree. How could you not? Most of the aforementioned quotes hedge on Jodie Meeks' return, but even if Meeks stays home, Calipari just added the No. 1 overall recruit -- a player capable of this -- to what was already the country's best recruiting class. Throw that in with Patrick Patterson's return, and even if Meeks decides to stay in the draft, Kentucky is a top five team, easily. Those recruits are that good. And if we've learned anything in the one-and-done era, it's that inexperience doesn't matter as much as we might think. Truly special players are special at any age.

You might say that Kentucky's biggest prospective weakness is also its architect: Calipari. The challenge now involves working all this talent -- the dynamic between Bledsoe and Wall will be especially interesting -- into team that won't only dominate its conference rivals but that is built for the postseason, too. Calipari's put this monstrosity of a team together. Now he has to actually coach it. I believe you can put that in the "good problems" file.

I haven't gotten this excited about UK basketball since Tayshaun Prince played for them.  :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Those 5 3's against NC are still engraved in my head, and they said he wouldn't do well in the NBA hahaha

Sorry for my inactivity on here the last couple of days. But;

Kentucky is going to be SICK. I can't even express how stoked I am for the upcoming season. I knew John Wall was going to come to UK, but you just don't understand how it feels to see your team land 3 of the best players in the nation until it happens. This is amazing.

yea too bad i never really follow the basketball that much cuz it runs along wrestling season, but im sure that i'll be tuned in this year

Everyone in the nation is going to be following UK's season. We have a legitimate shot at going from NIT losers to National Champions. This is remarkable.

All SEC DE Jeremy Jarmon, 3rd All Time in sacks at UK, Ruled ineligible for testing positive for a banned substance, Jarmon says it was an over the counter substance used for weight loss. AD Mitch Barnhart appealed the decision, but the appeal was denied. Video of the press conference is available on www.catspause.com this is very sad.

Jodie Meeks is staying in the NBA Draft. I think that this is a good move on his behalf. Next years draft class is stacked, and if he would have returned, he would have been the 4th best draft prospect on his own team; behind Wall, Patterson, and Orton. Its a blow to UK, but it will be interesting to see where he goes, and how he fares in the NBA.
