Region 6 had many other upsets. I just listed those that will not be at the big dance.
What about ross frazier beating coty lewis that was a big one.
Dan Smith from Trinity getting caught and pinned by manual, he ended up taking third
nathan speck isnt going to state lost to TC in the semi conso and philips from franklin co isnt either those were the 2 big ones from region 7 other than ross beating zarth of HC and then beating lewis in the finals

looks like not only philips but his coach may not be going either since they were both kicked out of the tourny, along with a henry clay fan. In my 8 years being in this great sport i have never seen 3 people kicked from a tourny. a coach, a fan, and a wrestler.
Why did they get kicked out?
Did Phillips get beat or was he DQ'd?
he got caught on what was a questionable call, granted he was the one on the matt, but his coach got kicked out speaking his mind about the call that really kept him out of state...as far as the fan he came out of the stands and went to a ref and questioned a call, a big no-no, dont approach a ref thats what coaches are for...

i heard that the franklin county coach might be able to coach at state because he got thrown out without a warning
The Franklin Co coach has to seat out the first day. Phillips got kicked out because he chest bumped the offical and said something to him. Just remember wrestlers that locking in the crotch, locked around a leg or trying to switch someone does not stop a takedown. Rule states that a takedown is awarded when the top wrestler has the opponent off the base and is hip to hip.
what was the score of the martinko wise match
Phillip got cheated on two calls in his semi finals matches, he got kicked out for trying to reason with an unreasonable ref and the coach was merely defending his wrestler those are the facts plain and simple
I was at the region 7 tourny and i can tell that there were some questionable calls by the officials. Most were made by a young, first year (i believe), referee that clearly shouldn't have been doing a regional tournament. Anyways, i saw several wrestlers lose close matches with questionable calls. Jones(FC 140) was a wrestler capable of placing in state that was a victim of several bad calls. Strangely, the same young referee was on the mat for both of his questionable matches.
I agree there were some officials on the mat this past weekend that shouldn't have been. But the only way to fix that is to get more qualified officials around this state. Think about it. We had 7 regional tournaments going on Saturday (I think region 3 was on Friday?) each needing 3 maybe 4 officials. Unfortunately, we just don't have 30 really good officials. Plus, there are some guys who can't do it for one reason or another and some who don't want to because of all of the politics and pressure. If you are unhappy with the guys in stripes, the only way to fix it is to encourage your former wrestlers to get involved by becoming an official.
Also, I think we need to find some way to do some training for officials. I know I have been one and have done regional tournaments before. Basically, you pass your take home test and walk on the mat. It seems like we could get together for a few scrimmages or early season meets and let the experienced guys train the new and less experienced officials.
Ranger;
There are several reasons for what has happened to the officials in the state of KY.
1. Many have retired or quit after long service.
2. The coaches were encouraging their coaches to start or help other teams so that there were more qualified coaches on wrestling teams.
3. Coaches have gotten out of control.
The last is the most disturbing to me.
Many of the coaches have been intimidating the newer officials. I understand trying to do what is best for your wrestler. I now firsthand how intense it can get on the mat with an official.
I believe that some areas have weekly or bi-weekly meetings for officials.
This is the only way to improve the official. For those who are thinking or are new officials the one bit of advise I would give you is be decisive in your decisions. Make the calls with all the confidence you can muster. This will go far with many of the coaches.
If a coach can cause you to question your calls then they will continue to do so.
I think that our coaches and officails need to experiece how the officials in Ohio handle their mats.
Ohio officials do not but up with "working the official". Whenever a coach directs his remarks to the official from the corner of the mat the officials will warn the coach about misconduct. Ohio officials will not discuss a situation with the coach unless it is at the scorers table.
ancient one - great post...i couldn't agree with you more that coaches should not be "working the refs" like they have been. I blame the coaches for this, but also the officials. The officials need to regain control and start telling coaches that they will not tolerate a barrage of screaming and insults from the corner. they need to be consistent with their calls, and not let coaches sway their judgement.
If your a true champion you wont leave the match up to the official to decide who wins or loses, Nobody's perfect the officials see what they see, Just Dominate.
If your a true champion you wont leave the match up to the official to decide who wins or loses' date=' Nobody's perfect the officials see what they see, Just Dominate.[/quote']You're joking right? This philosphy applies to at most 14 people in all of high school wrestling. True champion would have to mean someone that no one else could possibly beat. Try dominating someone every bit as good as you who is up by 1 point in the 3rd period with a ref that won't make the stalling call.
sure thats fine and well to gripe about if u had wrestled a perfect match but very few of us can wrestle a perfect match and lose by a point but blame it on the ref if u hadnt made that one mistake then it wouldnt have come down to the ref making the call what he is trying to say is dont leave it up to the refs to decide the match be up by 3 pts so u dont have to have the stalling call to win or lose the match
And how do you magically get up by 3 points? Just by wanting it to happen? As good as you are, there's always someone better. Look at Jarius Murton vs. Brad Cooper. I've seen too many matches where a wrestler has spent the enitre 3rd period chasing his opponent around the mat only to have the official call stalling in the last 10 seconds. At that point, why make a call at all? What if that same ref had made a bad call earlier in the match and given points to your opponent that he shouldn't have. Isn't your opponent also trying to dominate? The idea that you shoul always dominate and that the official never has an influence on the results is just silly.
Honestly, it's silly to say just dominate and u don't have to worry about it. Two wrestlers/teams of equal skill/strength/technique can be so equal that one bad call by the official can change everything. I've been involved in sports for over 30 years, referees can decide matches and games, it happens all the time. The more experience a referee has the less likely it is to happen, the more likely they are to make the correct call. Kentucky's referees need more experience and more training, as ranger has stated. No first year referee should have the responsibility of dealing with a regional tournament. Unfortunatly, bad calls will continue to decide matches, i'm sure we will see it happen this weekend.
