In Path of Exile 2, Exalted Orbs are a cornerstone of rare-item crafting. They permanently add a new random modifier to a rare item without affecting the existing rolls, making them one of the most powerful tools for finalising endgame gear.

An Exalted Orb works exclusively on rare items, adding one new affix drawn from the item’s full pool. All other properties—sockets, links, implicit modifiers, and existing stats—remain unchanged. This makes it ideal for “topping off” items that already have strong stats but are missing one or two crucial mods, such as additional resistances, life, or skill-specific damage boosts. The outcome is random, so careful planning is essential: applying an Exalted to the wrong item can feel like a wasted investment.

Timing is critical. Use Exalted Orbs only after an item has a solid foundation. Cheap or newly acquired rares are best enhanced with other currencies first—Alchemy, Chaos, or Regal Orbs—before committing an Exalt. Once the item has a few desirable stats, the Exalted Orb can provide a missing piece that pushes it to a higher tier of usefulness or trade value. Endgame weapons, amulets, and rings typically see the most benefit, while low-tier items are usually better sold or left untouched.

Crafting strategy also matters. Think in layers: first optimise base types and affix pools, then lock in quality and sockets. Only after these steps should you use Exalted Orbs to fill gaps in the modifiers. If an item already has six strong rolls, it is often smarter to trade it than risk adding a random mod that may not enhance its value. Many players also craft and flip high-demand rares, using Exalts to create sellable items with optimal stats, effectively turning crafting into both an upgrade and a trading opportunity.

To maximise returns, apply Exalted Orbs in high-tier content where rare items are of better quality and tradeable value is higher. Over time, combining strategic crafting, selective Exalted use, and trading can significantly enhance both your gear and your currency pool.
