KY Collegiate Wrestling!

Topic ID: 597 | 14 Posts

Rumors are that UL is looking at a wrestling program.

Anyone have anything to add to that rumor

or any input about other KY Schools considering adding the sport?

Eville:

I wouldn't hold out for this. There have been rumers for years about some of the larger schools picking up wrestling. I think Northern Kentucky Un. may have been the last to have a team before Cumberland and Campbellsville.

Every time a team is rumored to possibly exist the problem seems to be (I know this is a bad word for the wrestling community) Title IX. This is why NKU will not get a team back. It has been tried several times in the last 25 years and always shot down because of this "Foul word".

I understand your pessimism, but Title IX could actually work in the favor of wrestling. As more womens sports are added as is a current trend mens sports have to be added to stay in compliance. So when you hear about the new womens sports being added it creates an opportunity for a mens sport to be added. If the alumni at a school want it and the money comes in to support it, a school will find a way!

I like to be a little more optimistic. I understand its a long shot but so were a lot of things, it has to start somewhere.

What can be done to help this happen in a state school in KY?

Does anyone have an update on the effort to get more KY colleges on the wrestling mat?

Just thought of a way to beat the Title IX issue, add mens and womens wrestling!

Eville;

Doesn't Title IX depend on participants and not number of sports per team? Otherwise a school could "SAY" they have a girls team and have no participants.

I may be wrong, (My wife tells me I'm always wrong), but I think they count the number of athletes per women and men, not the number of sports they offer.

What would help is if the coaches around the area would help build the team, look for prospects (Many of which would have to come outside of the state), along with those inside the state. If some wrestling alumni that have become successful (meaning have lots of money) or very influential would petition the school then that would go a long way.

It would be just like Franky James at Campbellsville, First they hire the coach and then he or she recuites the wrestlers. The numbers wouldn't be a problem.

I see that people in Ky are wanting another college program and it looks like Northern Kentucky University would be the best option. Something that would get the schools attention may be to have prospective student athletes let the school know that they would like to wrestle at NKU. Here is a link to the Northern website that ask for prospective student athletes input. If they had a ton of High school kids filling this out asking for wrestling at NKU that would get there attention. Good Luck!

About Campbellsville Wrestling: We are right on schedule and working our way to the top of the NAIA. We are ranked # 13 in the latest polls and we finished only 12 points behind # 3 ranked University of the Cumberlands at the East Regional tournament. While Cumbeland and the other teams ranked ahead of us will lose several top wrestlers , we will return our entire varsity line up next year and they will be joined by new recruits Jacob Murton at 133 and several other impressive recruits. Campbellsville Wrestling 2007 will be hard to beat!

cumberland might loses some top competitors but they will be filled with some talented kids that will make up for the lose....

I am a assistan coach at University of the Cumberlands and I talked to a few wrestlers at the state tournament and I just wanted to lend out an invitation for any KY wrestlers to contact me if you are interested in wrestling in college. We are currently ranked #3 in the NAIA polls and plan to have a great showing next week at Nationals. Coaches please send me some info on your wrestlers who want to wrestle for our program. You can also call me on my cell.

I'm not sure if Janie Meyers is still the Atletic Director there, but if she is then I know first hand that she will not allow wrestling to happen at NKU.

From her mouth to my ears "As long as I'm here wrestling will not come back to NKU"

There have been several attempts to re-start the program at NKU. All of them have failed. I am one who will not go down that road again. I do however wish others to continue to push and maybe someday it will happen.

It's to bad someone like that can be so closed minded!!!!!!!

Subject: Athletic offerings

Ms. Meier and Staff,

With the sport of wrestling continuing to grow in Kentucky and a current resolution that was passed by the House of Representatives encouraging Colleges and Universities to include wrestling in there athletic offerings. I was wondering if you might consider the idea of a wrestling program at your college.

I am currently the KY USA Wrestling Director and a High School wrestling coach and we are experiencing a tremendous amount of growth with the number of kids involved with wrestling (K thru 12) As a coach I am seeking to have more athletic offerings for students to entice them to further there education. Wrestling is one of those options. Currently Kentucky has two private colleges that offer wrestling, This would be a win-win situation for the public colleges and universities by attracting more students to there campuses. Please consider this proposal in a positive light. We need to find ways to motivate our kids and this is another avenue for consideration. If you would like to discuss this exciting venture further, please contact me.

Title IX is the problem. This caused two collegiate teams I was on to fold in the late 70's - early 80's. Until Title IX is amended don't expect UL or UK to start a wrestling team.
