Who do you think were some of the most impressive wrestlers at state?
Most Impressive at state

I think Josh Johnson did a great job. As an 8th grader he came back to beat Carman and Bradbury to take Region 2. Then he worked his way thru the state brackets to reach the finals. Of course Coty totally dominated him, but I see him in many more finals to come.
My picks would be Daniel Murner, Joe Powers, and Josh Johnson for stepping it up at state. Coty Lewis really bounced back after a disappointing regional finish. And some fo the champs were pretty awesome, Derek Scott, Murton, Richard Starks, Scherer. It is tough to pick one.
Harrison Courtney from Woodford

You can make a real good case for Derek Scott. I heard them introduce Warner in the finals as 60-3 ... and after state final is 60-4. All 4 of those losses Scott is responsible for. Do you know how hard it is to beat someone like that 4 times straight ?
I agree that Scott was impressive at state and every time I saw him this season and I saw him alot. I always tried to make a point of watching him because he is a good example to use for younger wrestlers. His style isnt fancy but he is always attacking his opponent, he seems to never stop coming head on with good solid moves, without getting into trouble. I taped a few of his matches against Warner just for kids to study his style.
Congrat to Derek Scott on a great high school career and good luck in college!
O.P. McCubbins
First-year heavyweight from a first-year program (Nelson County) and medals.
Either that's:
A) Pretty dang impressive, or
The heavyweight class sucks so bad that it is actually possible for someone to pull that off.
I vote for A.
or op mcCubbie was a really good wrestler for a frist year he beat good people
Harrison Courtney, first of all he's a freshman. He also had the toughest weight class by far this year. He also came back from a big loss at state duals where I heard he got dominated. He might be the best ever from Kentucky when it's all said and done.
If all this talk about this being Powers' first year is true, he gets my vote.
I thought we were talking about most impressive. For anyone who watched the match with Powers. He did win the match but his actual wrestling ability was lacking. He has poor technique and mostly outmuscled his opponents.
I think what got him through was the fact that he was determined and went all out to win. Some of the others in his wt. class did not do this. They seemed to be tentitive (Thuenerman, Mines). I do tip my hat to him, he defeated the top 2 to win it.
As for most impressive I would have to go with Coty Lewis, He defeated those he needed to. (The tougher side of the bracket) He is no doubt the best in his wt. class. He did this after there was doubt wether he would even win the 1st round.
i dont think coty lewis was most impressive at all. everyone knew he was prolly gonna win it. the only person that gave him a good match was Jaoquin Luna at state duals and state
I think he was very impressive. He had arguably the toughest draw of the tournament and came through. I also disagree with everyone knowing that he was going to win it anyway; I remember debating with many people on here about that very subject. Many thought that he didn't have to gas to last six minutes and it would come back to haunt him. I'm very happy for him and glad he finally got the monkey off his back.
The subject is most impresive. It's not that impresive that guy wins state at 112 after hes been wrestling as long as coty.
Now on the other hand it's very impressive that a guy thats only been wrestlin about a year wins state at 140 who also had a rather tough draw
Eagle;
One paper Powers may look more impresive because he defeated the #1 and #2 ranked kids in his wt. class.
When I look at most impressive I take it as who looked good wrestling. Of cource Murton looked good but not impresive. Coty Lewis' wrestling was outstanding. He defeated his opponents by outwrestling them. That's impresive. Defeating your opponents by outmuscling them is not, but that is just my take on this thread.
Outmuscling or outwrestling is irrelevant as far as i'm concerned. If a guy stinks at technical wrestling but still wins, its impressive because his strength must be ridiculous.
In short, who cares how a guy wins so long as he beats guys. Thuneman is supposed to be the technician type of guy, so i'm guessing the technician doesn't always beat the muscle head considering Powers beating Thuneman (which i never saw coming i might add).

Technicians win most of the time 3 out of 4 times as Thuenerman did throughout the season.
I say congrats to all the champs! They got it done one way or the other in the face of alot of pressure of a state meet and that is how wrestling matches are decided, on the mat.
Strength vs Technical Skills, I think that technical skills are the difference in the early matchups and strength becomes more of a deciding factor the more times they meet. Its hard to defeat good strong wrestlers over and over during the course of a season.
Impressive means whatever you want it to be. Some are impressed by shows of strength, others by detail. What's impressive to me is when anyone puts it all together at the right time, no matter how they do it. I do know one thing, it's a hard thing to do, that's for sure. All the kids who achieved their goals or didn't but truly gave it their all; those are the ones that impress me, too bad we can't identify them all.

Exactly.
Daniel Murner... i dont think anyone picked him to win...but he is a true athlete...to win state in two sports is crazy. especialy when it is cross-county, and wrestling...
I know what you mean completely about Murner. Although i'm assuming he probably got to practice every single day with Scott, and that surely helped his cause !!
yeah they were partners all year, but that takes nothing away from what he accomplished...he really worked hard, evey second he was on the mat, plus he started wrestling as a sophmore...to beat some of the kids that he did...wow...he couldnt have done better! voth had beat him earlier in the season too...way to go murner!
Yeah. What i always thought was great is when he'd be standing there between periods he wouldn't be breathing hard. I guess that stands to reason with his running background.
The way i always saw it, is you'd have to beat him early because you sure as heck aren't going to outlast the kid when it comes to conditioning.
