Rebel Rankings - 2006/2007 Preseason #1

Topic ID: 603 | 62 Posts

OK, some of you asked for it so here it is. I haven't had adequate time to look at the details as much as I would like, but it's a first shot. We have months to refine it. I didn't get to see every wrestler step on the scale (nor do I want to), so I have made some wild guesses about moving weights. I hate the old "take out the seniors" approach. But I have been given some insight on where some guys plan to be next season. Of course we're 9 months away from a body fat test, so many plans will change. I also added a few middle school kids, but didn't see many this year. So here are my top 8 individuals and top 20 teams.

Holy Cow...Matt Byrd was only a Junior! That's amazing! He's going to be awesome next year.

btw - I believe Brent Hitchings is only going to be a 7th grader next year, speaking of awesome. I could see that kid being a 5Xer if he keeps progressing like he is....he mauls people!

im pretty sure cory spencer will not be at 112 next year.

Why would Spencer not be at 112? Wasn't he at 103 part of this season?

pioneer - I have Brad Hitchings ranked. He is the older of the two.

So who are the top 20 teams?

pre season are usually done with what is returning at the weight they wrestled at state. no one knows now who is going up a weight. wrestlers come in next year are not figured in at this piont. pre season is based on what is returning.

That's why these arn't the official ranking

I would make a couple of comments on the Nky boys.

Kyle Griffith I beileve will at least stay 130 (if not lower, I think Rust kept him from going lower)

Ryan Dillon Will probably stay at 135

Daniel Thuenerman will be 140 (he would have went lower if Dr. would let him this year)

John Golsby will be 140 (Lower if he decides to lose weight next year, since he didn't this year)

Josh Cooper 160 (May be higher, he lost tons of weight this year)

Tom Brownfield 145/152 (I think he was just stuck between Wilson and Hildrith)

I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the 1st time.

Ranger123...you also have the younger hitchings (Brent) ranked at 103. You have him listed as a 9th grader....he's going to be a 7th grader next year i believe....maybe a 6th grader.

edit

if matt byrd gose to hwt he will be a beast

OOPS! Forgot the teams. These are really preliminary based only on the top 8 above, so much will change when we get more info.

1 Fern Creek

3 Larue County

4 Union County

5 North Hardin

16 Johnson Central

17 Scott

18 John Hardin

19 Campbell County

20 Henry Clay

OK. Take off Brent. My mistake.

I don't like to just leave everyone at this past season's weight. I think that is worse than guessing. At least there are some kids I know that will be moving up a class or two.

Thanks grappler. Not sure Golsby will get back to 140. I don't think he will want to cut it. But I can't disagree on the rest. You are probably pretty close.

i think matt zarth will be a 119 and cliff told me at the state tournament if he didnt grow that much over the summer is was going to go 112 big if there

how is eastern 14th if they were 12th at state? we only lost 1 senior tht placed

I'm not suggesting take Brent Hitchings off...i'm just saying he's a 7th grader...if you feel he'll be ranked that, I'm not arguing...i'm just saying show him as a 7th grader. He is tough as nails.

the reason cpry spencer may not go 12 is because he had to cut A LOT of weight to make 103, and still some to make 12. with him growing and hitting the weights he may be at 119, and could be tough there

Alex Allman finished 5th at 130 from Lafayette. He should be ranked somewhere right.

back off cardinal. do your own if you are that upset with them. ranger is only adding his opinion. he has never come on here acting like he is the ultimate in wrestling rankings. just the opposite, he is always respectful of the coaches rankings and apoligizes for mistakes ahead of posting. while i think he is wrong on some of the weight classes here , he at least deserves respect and thanks for the hard work. he is giving us something to talk about 7 months away from the season opening. you have no right attacking him on a personal level. grow up.

bad mouth me that is fine. coomes rankings were very close in his last rankings. check them over the years they have always been close at the end of the year, if not correct. he will not list a kid untill he sees him or talks to a coach that has saw him. as for mccreary beating sheldon i dont see that.

I agree the KWCA rankings were close at the end of the year, but most of us who follow the sport could have gotten them close at the end of the year.

I appreciate Rebel's work, its just rankings, no reason for personal attacks!

Joaquin Luna will stay at 112 next year we already talked about it.

I think the rankings are pretty good, i look forward to them next season. Keep up the good work.

If I am correct wasnt byrd put on his back at regionals in the quater finals and at quaters in the state tourny bye the same unranked kid! he might want to stay at 215. Also from what i saw i am pretty sure he was stuck at state

how bad was byrds injury to his arm? from wat i saw it looked bad..

harrison courtney might still be at 145 next season he only weighed 50-55 last off season and dont look for much to change

What about Matt Slone. He will be a freshman next year. Won Middle School state at 117 and MOW. He will probley win state.

Chip Condon stx 145 or atleast thats what hes telling me

Well said sandman :D

I heard randal stevens from mccreary co might go 145 this year if he dont weigh too much and cardinal fan you should wake up and realize sheldon clark isnt as good as you think the are mccreary had 2 missing weigh classes and 3 middle school wrestlers that will be a threat next year

Well Chinta06.... I give props to Byrd for even wrestling this year. The doctor told him surgery as soon as he was in the accident but Matt wanted to finish out football and wrestle... Just think about it, he had to changed how he wrestled so he wouldnt do anymore damage to his arm. Matt Byrd will be a heavyweight state Champ... No questions.

Why should Eastern place 14th at State next year when we were 12th this season? Also, Joaquin Luna is planning on stayin at 112 for next season.. he didnt hve to cut a whole lot of weight so he plans on staying at 112. Paul Marks will also probably remain at 130 for next season, but thats not a sure thing as of yet.

they will drop because they lost seniors, well the only senior i know of is wise.

First, regarding Eastern. Yes, you have Luna, Rupp, Marks, and Kraft back. But I don't see those guys improving their finishing position by much. You lose Wise which balances out that improvement. Yes, other guys could step up, but I don't see those guys yet. As far as losing a few spots, I think teams like McCreary Central will be much improved with lots of returning talent and adding some kids from a good middle school program.

slideby - I have Matt Slone #6 at 119.

Not to toot my own horn, but just defending myself, my final predictions had about 90% of the medalists in the top 10. I don't think anyone matched that. Four weight classes I had at least 7 of the top 8 predicted in the top 8. Much of the credit goes to the input received on this forum.

Alex Allman finished 5th at 130 from Lafayette. He should be ranked somewhere right.

Not necessarily. I do think he was one of the most improved wrestlers I saw this season, but he benefited from a very favorable draw at state. If he can proved himself early in the season he will move up quickly.

Hey Ranger JJ Jude from Johnson Central will be in the 7th grade next year not 9th. Thanks for the rankings I always enjoy them.

what about bobby neal at 215 i was talking to a woodford guy at state and he said that he was pretty good

Is Matt Byrd really going HWT next year?

The reason I ask is because there truely have not been that many 215 that were successful when they moved up to Hwt.

Hwt. is a different type of wrestling. A few that come to mind that did succeed are Bruce Stepp, and Jason Hardin.

I agree that Byrd is a great wrestler, but I will wait and see just how successful he will be at this weight.

I know this doesn't mean a lot, but the Bluegrass games results show that he finished ahead of Hardin and Goodrich at HWY last summer. Maybe he will cut back to 215, but without Goodrich I think the chances are lower. Plus, with so many graduates I think 275 is wide open for next season.

Ranger123 if what you said above is true about Alex Allmen why is Bryan Wasson from harrison co ranked? Alex Allmen beat the kid from Anderson co. that beat Wasson first round.....Also Wassons record at state was 1-2 Allmens record was 6-2 that is a more than hard road he had to wrestle i belive he should be ranked...especially if you are ranking Wasson

Not a good example to choose. I know they have wrestled head to head quite a number of times over the last few years. And the only match Allmen can hang his hat on is a tournament at Bourbon Co last summer when Wasson was way out of shape. Prior to the bad match against Carey, Wasson's only losses all year were close matches to Eric Bryant, Ben Rust (who he also beat), Steven Butler (who he also beat) and a loss to Parker. Try again. Plus, Allmen will have the opportunity to prove me wrong all year.

Hey Ranger JJ Jude from Johnson Central will be in the 7th grade next year not 9th. Thanks for the rankings I always enjoy them.

Are you sure on that? I thought JJ Jude was a 6th grader last year, and a 7th grader this year?

There are two Dixie Heights wrestlers that are missing in your rankings.

At 152/160 Brad Denham (12). He only lost 2 matches going into Regionals. His losses at Regionals were to Brownfield of Campbell Co. on a 4-point move with :10 seconds to go to win by one point and Valdez of Ryle by a one point. His 2 losses during the season were to Cooper of Simon Kenton and Wheeler of Larue. He says he is going 152 next year but will probably be going 160. He also pinned Ryan Ross of Harrison Co.

At 189 Steven Benson (11). He only weighed 177 all season and will definately be going 189 next season. He lost to Watson and Turner at state. He beat Guiler at state. He also beat Green early in the season.

Both should be in the top Eight.

you really dont see south oldham as a top 20 team?

you really dont see south oldham as a top 20 team?

South Oldham lost 9 seniors.

I agree with 152 and think they will rebuild very quickly. I understand how they may not be top 20 preseason having lost so many seniors, but they will develop quickly. I think by Christmas will have proven they deserve to be ranked at least top 20.

Positive. He will be a 7th grader next year.

Good catch. I completely forgot about Denham. He should be top 4 at 160. I had Benson #9, but will re-evaluate.

you really dont see south oldham as a top 20 team?

It's not so much that I don't think they will be top 20, but they lost 9 seniors (from the state qualifiers) and I don't know who will fill those slots. Once we see who they reload with I'm sure they will crack the top 20, but not sure how high they will go.

Hey where is Billy Fuller from Campbell County at 215! He stuck tanen roe form mcreay county and he beat a few others at his weight class that are ranked on this rankings! He only lost to Reinhole leicht of Desales and Dale stone from conner which both were placers in the state tournament!

Fuller is #9 on my list. He didn't stick Roe at state. Must have been another meet as I never saw that result.

1 Fern Creek

2 Woodford County

3 Larue County

4 Union County

5 North Hardin

Are you telling me that nobody out there has a problem with Fern Creek being ranked #1??? I find it hard to believe that nobody has a problem with that.

shouldnt malcolm jackson be 1st? he beat peace at state duals. but then again he didnt make weight at regionals so we dont no how he wouldve done at state

I would have a problem with Fern Creek being ranked ahead of Woodford but I think they are based on returning points. We lost a lot this year (Richard Starks, Smith, Goodrich, Fyffe). All of those guys were very good, Smith didn't perform as well as he should have. That's a lot of team points we don't have returning, even more if you throw in Rusty Parks. Once we figure out who's going what weight I think we will be fine. At least another top three performance.

Matt Slone beat Luna his 1st 8th grade year.

Matt Slone beat Luna his 1st 8th grade year.

The only reason this happened was because of horrible stalling calls by the ref. The score ended up being 1-2 and all of the points were stalling points

shouldnt malcolm jackson be 1st? he beat peace at state duals. but then again he didnt make weight at regionals so we dont no how he wouldve done at state

Jackson is very good, but i view that Peace match as an anomaly ... i was shocked at the way Jackson handled Peace at first. But here's why Peace should be ranked over him.

Jackson was getting beat and outwrestled by Bowlds at the duels (same day), and then rolled Bowlds for a pin i believe. That same day Peace stomped Bowlds pretty bad and beat Howard. Jackson also lost to Butler at another tourney, who Peace also beat at state.

A rematch would be a great match to see and the best way to see who's got what !!

You also have to remember that sometimes wrestlers just have a hard time with another wrestler for one reason or another. Sometimes this is a mental thing and sometimes its just a conflict of styles that causes the match to be close.

When this happens the better wrestler usually is able to defeat handedly other wrestlers that the other one has problems with.

South Oldham should be a top 10 and possibly top 5 team next year, if things go as they should. Several starters sat out because of injuries this year, plus there are incoming freshmen that will make an impact.

south oldham will be in at least top 10 they have good wrestling tradtion and younger foundation. they will always be a tough competeing team
