Wrestling "Games"

Topic ID: 7 | 6 Posts

We all know that wrestling is a serious sport, but for youth wrestlers, it is very important to try to include games into each session.

What are some games you and your team play? Please give us a good explanation so we can try it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bulldog: get 4 or 5 coaches/wrestlers in the middle of the mat, have the kids line up on the other side on all fours, they must charge across the mat and get to the other side, while the coaches have to turn them to their backs. Once you've been turned, you are now in the center of the mat being the bulldog.

King of the mat: everyone has this one....start with the lightest 2 guys, wrestle for a take down, winner moves up to the next biggest guy, etc...

Capture the flag (sort of) - take 2 t-shirts, have 2 wrestlers loosely wear them down the back of their shorts (sort of like a tail), the object of the game is to capture your opponent's t-shirt.

A game we've played that we don't really have names for:

1) divide the room into 2 groups (team a & B), assign all wrestlers a number...with a #1 on team a & #1 on team b.... take a t-shirt, place it in the center of the mat....when a number is called out, the wrestlers from each team race to the center, and try to bring the t-shirt back to their team's side. Keep a total team score. -Plee

King Pin, divide into two teams, w/ each team having a so called king. All players are on all fours and try to pin each other once you've been pinned your out, but if either member pins your king then the team who pinned him is the winner. Each king is kept only to the team members. -ashbrook119

The shoelace game is one I like. It's an individual game you can play in a tournament format. Two wrestlers face off and each is trying to touch the other wrestler's shoelaces. You can make it best 2 out of 3 to advance or just once. -AllAmricn157

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We play the shoelace game a little different we have an "every man for himself" format. if ur shoes get tagged ur out and then when gets down to 2 people they face off. this is a bit more challenging because you have to look out for more than 1 person and it is also less time consuming as a tournament. -MrCleanJR2

Another I like that I don't have a name for is where two wrestlers square off and the object is to get a lock around something first. You can lock around anything except a single arm. Ways to win are locking around the head and arm, or around the leg. You can also lock around the body if you want. We set this one up the same way as the shoelace game, in a tournament within the team. -AllAmricn157

We played games like KingPin and Shoelace when I was in high school but I think we called the differnt names. In college we played Wall Ball. After practice was over and the room usually thinned out, we would split up into groups of 4 or 5. We had an old deflated football that we used to throw around during warm-up so any ball would do. If anyone has ever playe ultimate frisbee then just follow the same concept. Throw the ball back and forth between teammates but do not let the other team knock it down or intercept. You are only allowed to take two steps after catch then you must maintain your position. Everyone else is running around like mad trying to get open to catch a pass. If your team is good enough you stay out the whole time until defeated. To score you had to touch the ball against the opposing players wall (just like scoring a touchdown).

I would normally lose around 4 to 5 lbs. a practice and then an extra 2 or 3 from wall ball in about an hour. It was fun and really exhausting if you had to stay out for awhile. The key is to keep moving and running to where your opponents down. - CoachWoodring

we play a game called slap back at wrestling camp

1.) every one takes there shirt off for the exception of girls

2.) every one finds a partner to lay beside

3.) each pair lays beside each other and makes a big circle of the pairs

4.) you have two guys jumping over the pairs one trying to slap the other guys back

5.) if he slaps his back the role reverses and the other guy trys to slap his back

6.) the person who is being chased has to go two laps around the circle before he lays beside a pair

7.) if he lays on the in side of a pair the outside person has to run

if he lays on the outside of the pair the inside guy runs

8.) if a guy slaps a persons back when laying down that person gets one smack on the back my a coach

in this game you dont want to win , the winner is the person with the most messed up back ...all in alll its a really fun game if your not chicken!!!! -christiancounty125

This post is a year old... only I am allowed to bump such old posts  :-o

I want to hear some more.

Circle game: Put two piece of mat tape going down the center of the mat in one straight line but leaving the center circle untaped. (hard to describe). This divides the circle into two half moons with the middle circle in between. Two teams. The object of the game is to get the members of the other team out. You do this by either getting ALL of their body in your "half moon" or by making them touch ANY body part--even a finger-- out of bounds. The inside circle and outer mat is considered "free space" and any one may walk freely on this part. Usually examples are needed to be shown to explain better, but hopefully you get the jest.

Some may be repeats but I have 4 articles of Games.

Wall Ball:

M<y scool (campbell county) plays it here are the instructions:

first tape to squares on opposie sides of the wrestling room

then you use the practice squares on the mat as boundaries (you have to stay in side the circles no matter whatr and you can get pushed out or you are out.,

The objective is to jump from circle to circle rolling the ball to eachother and putting it in the square on the opposing wall but others can push you out of tyhe cicles to eliminate you.

Imaginary Football- you divide the kids into 2 teams and you pick someone from each team to have the ball you go and tell your coaches who has the ball on your team and then your team goes to its end of the mat you get on your knees and when  your coach says go  both teams let loose whichever person carrying the ball makes it to their end of the mat first wins the losing team has to do  15 pushups good game for all ages
