Job Description for Assistant Wrestling Coach
Responsible to: Head Wrestling Coach, Athletic Director and Principal
Responsible for: Help with Implementation of the Wrestling Program. This responsibility includes all High School, Middle School and Youth Programs.
Subordinates: Student Athletes
Responsibilities:
A. On Going
- Give direction to and be accountable for the total school district’s wrestling program.
- Keep accurate records and be aware of trends in wrestling by attending clinics, workshops or subscribe to periodicals related to wrestling.
- Be aware of all rule changes adopted by the Kentucky High School Athletics Association. Have a working knowledge of the KHSAA Handbook.
- Be a member of the Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association.
- Be available to meet with community groups to promote North Hardin Wrestling and Student Athletics.
- Be a visible member of your booster club by attending meetings and maintaining an open line of communication with parents.
- Provide input to the Hoquiam Athletic Handbook yearly, including letter award requirements and individual team rules.
- Maintain and promote a fair and consistent discipline code to North Hardin athletes.
- Communicate with other Coaches regarding program development and the sharing of athletes.
- Work and maintain a positive relationship with your players during the off-season.
B. Pre-Season
- Arrange to attend rules clinic (mandatory for all Coaches).
- Arrange for Middle School Coaches and practice facility.
- Have available schedules (including all tournaments), list of rules and other pertinent information at a pre-season parent meeting.
- Pre-season Booster meeting to evaluate fund raising needs. Share needs for Sub or District tourney if we are hosting.
- To help with inventory on all in-coming equipment. Maintain accurate records and communicate with the Head coach and Athletic Director on equipment needs.
- To attend meetings with your Head coach to discuss coaching assignments.
- Be responsible for verifying that you a have current First Aid cards and current coaching standards.
- Review schedules and provide input regarding departure times.
- Discuss facility needs prior to the start of the season with the Head Coach. Do a walk through “risk management” evaluation of your practice facility and communicate with the AD any special needs.
- Turn in a list of interested participants to the AD prior to beginning of season for eligibility checks.
- Check on First Aid needs.
C. During the Season
- Help organize and schedule practice sessions on a regular basis with the concept of developing the athlete’s greatest potential.
- Establish a fair and consistent means of selecting and evaluating participants. Have a thorough knowledge of all players, their strengths and their weaknesses, to help individual players understand their placement on the team.
- Organize and maximize your skills.
- Emphasize safety precautions; be aware of proper conditioning training and injury procedures. Keep accurate reports on all injuries. Any injury needing medical assistance must be reported and an accident report completed and turned into the Athletic Director.
- If players miss practices or meets due to injury, make sure you have a “Return to Play” form completed prior to the player returning to participation.
- Teach fundamental skills and to teach skills appropriate to the skill level of each athlete.
- Maintain proper supervision at all times. DO NOT LEAVE THE WRESTLING ROOM WITHOUT COACHING SUPERVISION. DO NOT LOAN YOUR KEYS OUT TO ANYONE WANTING TO USE THE FACILITY. A COACH MUST BE PRESENT AT ALL TIMES IF THE FACILITY IS OPEN.
- Be responsible when having post high school volunteers come in to help (i.e. During vacation breaks) with your practice. Avoid having them directly wrestle high school participants. They are free to show moves and help evaluate technique, but avoid direct contact when demonstrating moves.
- Establish and maintain a good working relationship with the press and keep in mind “the press has the pen last.”
- Maintain a neat and orderly practice facility. It is crucial that your facility maintains the highest hygiene standards.
- Report immediately any form of communicable disease that may have been spread through contact with the wrestling mats.
- Make sure coaches and participants have access to phones.
- Be a positive, motivating and enthusiastic member of our coaching staff and present yourself in a professional manner when dealing with parents and students.
- Coaches shall be directly responsible for their behavior and that of their team and assistant coaches at all practices and matches. Keep a positive image and always look sharp. The image you portray is a direct reflection on the school and the coaching staff.
- Prepare team rosters and programs for home matches. Notify opposing coaches of the number of JV contests you expect prior to each match.
- Other duties as assigned.
D. Post Season
- Conduct a post season meeting with your Head Coach relating to equipment “turn in” procedures, awards and banquet information.
- Meet with the Head Coach regarding evaluation.

<LI>Prepare a record keeping system that kept on file all practice plans and injury reports.WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:
Must be able to perform the physical requirements of job. Must be able to read directions, write instructions and follow safety instructions. Capable of hearing and communicating with staff and students. Capable of presenting information in a clear and concise manner that is organized during training programs and inservice sessions. Must have good visual application to operate equipment in order to perform job responsibilities in a safe and professional manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must be capable of standing/walking without restrictions.
- Must have the ability to reach, grasp, handle and grip without difficulty on a continuous basis.
- Stooping/bending or squatting is required on a frequent basis ranging from slight forward bending to floor level.
- Must be able to lift and carry objects on a constant to frequent basis weighing 0-24 pounds; 25-50 pound periodically.
- Occasional to continuous pushing and pulling depending on work assignment.
- Must have the ability to get along with students, staff and public.
- Possess the ability to train and provide inservice sessions for other coaching staff.
- Maintain records and certification requirements.
1) High school graduate or GED equivalent 2) Wrestling experience preferred
3) Valid Kentucky State driver’s license
4) Proof of citizenship
5) Supervisory experience
6) First Aid and CPR certification.
