RIP 1983 Heavyweight State Champ, Phil Shipp

Topic ID: 8013 | 6 Posts

1983 Heavyweight State Champ Phil Shipp has passed. If I remember correctly, he wrestled one year for J-town and was state champion.

Our thoughts and prayers will be with his family.

He was 5th the year before at 185. I didn't know him personally but I was wrestling at the same time.

He had a great partner in the wrestling room Larry Little.

He will be missed.

Thanks for the info GOO. I played football with Phil and Larry, but I didn't remember him wrestling before his senior year. I worked in the courthouse with Phil in the 90's. He was a Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff and was a great guy.

My prayers are with his family. I wrestled him my 2nd match at state very strong and quick and to win hvywt at only 192 pounds was a great acheivement. On the funny side of the tourney he carried me and my220 fai butt over his shoulder in the hotel after state to keep me from getting in trouble with law . Great guy

I went to J-town a few years after he graduated and I know Coach Haydock had nothing but great things to say about him and Larry Little. He always told how those two would go at each other and everyone would get out of the way because if you didnt you would get run over. He was only about 190# and wrestled heavyweight because he didn't want to take a spot away from Larry. I have met him a few times when I was in high school and he would come up to the room. He was an impressive character for sure. Sad to hear.
