Can someone explain what is defined as a regular contest for me? Is a tournament a regular contest or a dual? Any help is appreciated.
Lewis Mendez
I'm not sure, it might be better to contact the KHSAA about your question. However, I would think it means that you are allowed to attend 17 different tournaments and dual meets together. I think 1 tri-meet would count as one regular contest and even a two day tournament should be 1 contest... but then again I'm not a coach and I don't know the rules.
Anyone else know?
Seventeen Varsity weigh In's. Dual, Bi, Tri, Tournament all count as one weigh In.
Isn't there a limitation of how many scrimages you are allowed to have also?
So if my team attends a two day tournament and has to make weight for the second day, does that count as 2 regular contests or just 1 still?

Most all Coaches will not have a weigh In on the second day for that reason.

Yes, you are allowed 2 pre-season Scrimages, whether it is a dual, team duals, or Tournament
So 2 day tournaments dont require making weight on the second day? What about states? Is that the same way also?

This rule is for regular season only. State you will have daily weigh In's increased by 1 lb per day. Max 3 lbs. allowance
The limitation is 17 events. (A dual, Tri, Quad, or five way all is one event, A one day or two day tourney is also one event.)
you may also have 2 scrimages

When does the 2pound weight allowance start?Isnt it like january 2nd or sumthing like that??
Our 2 lbs allowance may change to an earlier date this year as discussed at the coaches meting at State last year. Noy sure of what day will be the new date. After Christmas was discussed.
That will be great if we get the two pound weight allowance after christmas.More people can enjoy their christmas dinner(or two more pounds of it anyhow)...Our 2 lbs allowance may change to an earlier date this year as discussed at the coaches meting at State last year. Do we even have the authority to do this? This is a national high school rule. How would that affect wrestling out of state during that time period?

This was discussed in the coaches meeting at the state tourney last year. The reason this was brought up was because other states have different dates on wt. allowance. This is because of the starting dates in each state. I think (but I may be wrong), that there is a window of time when the 2lb allowance may be given. I believe the concensus at the meeting was to change the date to after Christmas or Jan. 1st.

Modification of the date for the 2lb rule is up to the state.

That is true...How whould this work???
When you go to another state you must go by there rules on wt. allowance. Nky use to have trouble with this back in my day when Ohio used the 175 lb weight class and Ky did not.
I believe we need to go by what the national rule is. I have been to states where they break the national rule and make their own rule it only hurts the state. In trying to get wrestling to grow, you have to follow a standard that is above your own. The National Federation makes the rules and on weight classes so that all states have an even playing field, so that when they come together to compete at tournaments like Reno TOC, Ironman, Beast of the East, no one state is at a disadvantage or advantage. It would do alot of damage to border schools in my opinion. In the two or three weeks between where the national rule is and where Kentucky is wanting to amend it in their favor, we will have kids going up and down just to stay in one weight class. For example, if the weight gets changed at Christmas, you will have a kid making 127 in Kentucky, then after the break, say a school goes to a tournament in Ohio, now they have to make 125, then the next week there is a dual and a tournament in Kentucky so now they can make 127, then the following week they have to make 125 again. I think this idea, though it may be in the best interest of the kids in Kentucky, it is not in the best interest of the sport growing in Kentucky. If we do this, what is to keep us a coaches, from breaking the Body Fat/Water weight program that is mandatory nationwide starting this season? What is to keep us from readjusting all the weights so we can fill teams that are not the same as other states? I think this could have a snowball effect of looking out for whats easiest for us in Kentucky. Just my thoughts though.

The rule change would be in accordance with NFSHSA. Because our season starts earlier, we are able to adjust the date. KHSAA will be the one to approve the date change. NFSHSA rule is (if I read it right) that there must be at least a seven week window before an increase in weight is allowed, and kentucky has been the leader with the body fat analysis. we have been doing it for years.
Kentucky wrestling will never go against the National Federation rules. The date will difer because of when Ky starts thier season.
I believe the reason for the change was in response to teams that went to other states that had a different date for weight allowance.
Ok I understand now. I was not aware that the season began earlier in Kentucky than everywhere else. I just dont want to be in a state that goes against the rules. I have experienced it in another state I lived in and it made for the state to be worse off since they were not willing to wrestle out of state from what I understood (they were having a dual on wednesday, a dual on thursday and a two day tournament during the certification time and getting an extra pound allowance for each day of competition and then saying they made the official weight and were using rubber suits and this was just a couple years ago).
I thought the argument was to move the allowance date up the same number of weeks as the beginning of the season. So when the beginning of the season was moved to 2 weeks earlier (I think thats correct but not sure) it was argued that the allowance should be given two weeks earlier to maintain the same number of weeks the wrestlers were required to make base weight.
I think most states have different dates but it seems like they are all around the first of the year, give or take a few weeks. Teams just need to know in advance if traveling out of state what weights are expected.
Does the regular season start earlier or just practice? From what I have seen about regular matches, which is when the wrestlers first actually have to make weight, it is the same as every other state. Matches start at the end of November, beginning of Decemeber.
Our 1st week of actual competition is week #21 (11/20)
KHSAA Official Calendar for wrestling

Is that first week of competition for scrimmages or official matches?
Official matches, Scrimmages are done Between Oct 15 and Nov 19
A few clarifications:
The date of the two pound allowance is not a National rule. It is decided in each State. Ky, Ind, and Ohio have different dates right now. This really creates problems for teams that are going to a tournament out of State.
A two day tournament is still classified as a single event - even if there are weigh-ins each day.
Have any tournaments set dates yet? And if so, where can they be located?

So when EXACTLY will we have the two pound weight allounce this year????
